    How to divide and transplant your overgrown potted running bamboo!
    Over time, bamboo will fill out the pot it's planted in. When this happens, the bamboo will not have room to send up new shoots, and the existing growth will thin out and yellow. When bamboo is root-bound, it won't receive the necessary water and nutrients.
    Root-bound running bamboo can escape easily. Instead of letting it escape and grow into your neighbor's yard, divide and transplant it to give it space.
    In the Northern Hemisphere, the best time to divide bamboo is in the first quarter of the year, when it is dormant. Never divide the bamboo when it's shooting. Always water it in after dividing, and keep it in a sheltered environment until it establishes.
    The bamboo featured here is Pleioblastus linearis.

    What type of bamboo is that. I live in Adelaide, South Australia, and we have a mediterranean climate.( mild winters and long hot dry summers) I have tried growing alphonse karr, and oldhamii in very big pots. (1000mm or 40 inches across) with some dying, or very, very slow growth. But as soon as i put them in the ground they take of like a rocket. I also have running bamboo that grows very well in pots of any size.

      Bamboo does not propagate that way. You can make cane cuts, but there is an optimal time for this and it only works on clumpers for the most part. You also have to baby them.

    With regards to sizing, why not either reduce the root ball further for the pot size that you chose( since there is not much room in the pot used for the new planting) or use a bigger pot given the size of the root ball?

    • @maxgoldstein3483
      @maxgoldstein3483 Před 4 lety +1

      I just split my black bamboo without sawing, (Phyllostachys nigra). I had it growing in the same type of black 15 gallon pot they sawed in half. My bamboo wasn't as root bound so it wasn't hard to take out. I just tipped the pot over and stomped the sides and pulled it out. Then I used a spade shovel to split the plant. So it can be done without a saw but I wouldn't let it get to big and root bound before attempting to split it. Depending on your container type you made need to dig it out of there, could be very difficult, so you probably want to split it sooner rather than later.

    • @bamboosourcery
      @bamboosourcery  Před 4 lety

      We second Max. If needed, you can just saw down the middle and around the sides and then pull out the rootballs in chunks, in order to save your decorative pots.
