The "last colony" in Europe? | Growing up in Gibraltar

  • At the Southern tip of the Spanish peninsula is a piece of land measuring under 7 km2, whose GDP per capita is one of the highest in the world: it's Gibraltar.
Gibraltar is one of Britain's overseas territories, and according to its citizens, it's happy to be one. Commuting to Spain for groceries and restaurants, welcoming thousands of Spaniards coming in for work daily, the lives of those living under the Rock are an extraordinary mix of English and Spanish culture.
We went to the country that Spain defined "the last colony in Europe" to ask a young Spanish person and a young Gibraltarian what it means to grow up under the Rock.
    Chapters:
    00:00 - 00:56 Intro
    00:56 - 1:13 What is Gibraltar?
1:13 - 2:10 What Gibraltarian identity looks like
    2:10 - 2:58 Why is Gibraltar British?
    2:58 - 3:49 Spain or Britain
3:49 - 4:16 Between wealth and drug trafficking
4:16 - 6:19 Living in Spain, depending on Gibraltar
    6:19 - 7:11 More than business
7:11 - 8:01 Francisco Franco and closed borders

I visited Gibraltar just recently, and realised what a beautiful place it is. Britain in the sun, or so I thought. But it is much more than that. Gibraltarians are unique, both English and Spanish at the same time. I love that combination. It is a relationship made in heaven. I'm returning there next year. Just for a day to remind me of what a wonderful place it is.

Very good question, Only last night I met with my very old friends of 50 years, One is 100% english man married to a Gibraltarian lady, the other is 100% Scottish man also married to a Gibraltarian Lady who passed away recently, the next is a born Gibraltarian and his brother of Maltese descent, the next was born in Gibraltar of Spanish descent, the next was also born in Gibraltar of Genoese descent and I born in Gibraltar of Portuguese descent from 4 generations back in time, We all feel Gibraltarian even those that where not born here, We are all British and proud of it but we feel most proud to belong to this little community of ours which we will defend to the end, We have no problem with our neibours in fact I love their hospitality, culture and generosity, worked with them in Gibraltar for many years and there is not a bad word I can say about them, great people, One of my grandsons does not speak Spanish and I am trying to convince him to try, my other grandson is half Irish and half Gibraltarian, he also is finding it hard to speak Spanish and I try to teach him in my own way to speak andalucian Spanish which shows on my part that I have nothing against Spain, but when it comes to Madrid I will never trust them, they still carry franco's mentality and still don't understand democracy like we do. I could carry on but i could go on forever.

Never been to Gibraltar however I’ve spoken to a few Gibraltarians over the years through work, especially recently, a very friendly and chatty people. My only question is (sorry to be “that guy”), I was under the impression that when Gibraltar was ceded to Britain, many, if not most Gibraltarian families fled Gibraltar into Spain. Most Gibraltarians today (I believe), are descended from various immigrants who were brought in from various parts of Europe (I used to speak to one with a Portuguese surname!). If this is indeed the case, and without wishing to get all controversial, when parliament says, “the people of Gibraltar wish to remain British”, are these really ethnic Gibraltarians we’re talking about, or a population which was planted there by Britain in the first place?

    • @severinechantalou128

Maybe your looking at the situation with a strictly British eyes/conception. I'm from one of the French overseas in the Caribbean and from my over 20 years of experiencing social Life in Europe (French and UK I'm UK based now) Identity, Citizenship, Culture, Race are very confusing for mainland Europeans. For most people I know they mean exactly the same... For overseas territories all over the world, those concepts are perceived very or sometimes extremely differently. I'm black Caribbean coming from an eclectic ethnical background ( I look let's say black-asian because of my native mixity, I was born in Paris ( some people find me very French..) and I speak English with more of a American-like accent because I grew up in the Caribbean....) I confuse people so much in London, I don't even know where to start 😂😂😂😂 First thing first is sticking to History to understand us. If, you look at Gibraltar from a Mainland perspective, I've never been there but I believe you won't understand it. If you put on your "historian" glasses, things start to make sense. It is the same for a lot of Caribbean cultures, for philipinos, Mauritius, south Americans etc... Some people are confused by philipinos having Spanish names and enjoying South American music while eating Asian food, being Asians and living in Asia. If you know a bit about their History it's completely.... normal

Because of this closed down attitude Spain is no longer a wealthy country and doesn't win Nobel prizes. It's not innovative or influential. It's not even been democracy for very long. The border was deemed to be further in to Spain than it is so Spain needs to give back that extra land. That's the reality. Look at the treaty.

Jajajaja dude, what a ton of nonsense.
1-In the democracy Index, Spain is position ED even better than the US, Israel, South Korea or Italy with 8,07 points, should we consider all these countries non democratic?
2-Spain is among the 15% of the richest countries by gdp per capita and among the 7% richest by nominal gdp. And it's IHD is among the top 30. Almost the same as France's. (Also, Spain has a higher life expectancy than the UK and it's Healthcare is considered to be also better... How do they do that? Magic? ).
3-It is true that it is not at the same level as other western European countries in innovations and we have problems, but calling it as if it was a third World country is lying. Yet, Spain is the second in organ transplanting activity only behind the US for example. We can also talk about AVE (the second largest High speed network in the world), countries like Saudi Arabia or Malaysia hired Spanish companish to build their High speed networks. Spain is working with France and Germany in the developement of the SCAF, a 6th gen fighter. Australia hired Navantia to build Spanish-designe F-100 destroyers and their two LHDs. Wow, I thought there was no innovation in Spain XD. Does Zara, Inditex, Iberdrola, Ferrovial, Telefónica, IAG, CASA or Indra ring bells? Nah, definetely there is no innovation in Spain.
Last but not least, the fact that the UK has or has had so many disputes with many countries around the world (Gibraltar, Falklands, North Ireland, Chagos, everything that the british museum does not want to return, all the coups and invasions, even the steriotype of the drunken tourists... we can also add the idea of being incapable or too entitled to learn foreign languages) does not make you think that maybe you are doing something wrong? Or you are too entitled to recognize it?

@@littleshep5502 I’m not sure if you realise, but you have just accepted that Scotland is a colony.
The sovereign, independent country of Scotland entered into a supposedly ‘voluntary’ economic and political union with another country (there is nothing in the Treaty of Union that made it a territorial union) but you are now saying that Scotland cannot leave that ‘voluntary’ union other than with someone else’s permission. All that is required to leave a ‘voluntary’ union is to notify the other party that you are leaving. If you require anyone’s permission, it is no longer a ‘voluntary’ union and you have become a colony.
Of course England has a central government, it is called Westminster and if you don’t think it’s England’s government you can’t count. It pretty much admits to being such by the fact there is a Secretary of State for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland but no Secretary of State for England.
In 1706, Daniel Defoe (and English spy) said, ‘The Scots will be allowed to send to Westminster, a handful of men who will make no weight whatever. They will be allowed to sit there for form’s sake to be laughed at.’ And so it has proved to be.
It’s interesting you say, ‘Scotland cannot leave the UK without permission, with this being controlled by the UK gov’. The English Government defined the UK with the United Nations as ‘A Union of two countries, a principality, and a province’. Furthermore it said, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland were self-governing and could leave the UK anytime they wished. Of course they said this because they knew if they didn’t, under the United Nation’s decolonisation statutes, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would clearly be defined as colonies. But know you are telling me this was a lie and Scotland can only leave the 'union' with England’s permission.
Interestingly, there is a civil liberation movement in Scotland in the process of preparing to take a case to the United Nations to trigger their decolonisation statutes.
Put another way. Imagine you had a business that I wanted to take it over so I said, ‘How about we amalgamate our businesses?’ and you replied, ‘No, I don’t want to’. So I put a gun against your head, and say, ‘What about know?’ (Remember that at the time of the signing of the Treaty of Union the English had their Army amassed in Ulster and on the Scottish border and their Navy stationed in the Firth of Forth outside of Edinburgh and the English Chancellor of the day famously said, ‘It is union or war’).
So you sign up to the deal (so as not to lose your head) and in the new enterprise you get 45 shares and I get 486 (the split of representatives in the first parliament formed after the supposed union) then I put a proposal to the Board of Directors (which is you and me) that you can only leave with the Board of Directors’ permission (i.e. the equivalent of the constitution is reserved). We take a vote and lo and behold the proposal pass with 486 votes for and 45 against. Then many years from then you say, ‘This isn’t working for me, I want to leave’, to which I reply, ‘You can shut the F up and get back to your desk, I’ll tell you when you’re leaving and it ain’t going to be anytime soon!’
If you ever had any illusion you were in a partnership it has been dispelled and if you were a country you are what is commonly known as a colony.
