    Brilliant presentation. Thanks from across the warming pond. Been to CIS school many years ago so this hands on display brings back to mind the operating principles. Non of this would be necessary is owners would just fill tanks before storing and add a fuel preservative. Thanks again.

    That "o-ring" that was installed in the bottom of the barrel onto the round slotted nut was actually a piston rest position seal. The nut depth should have been precisely measured and the round slotted nut marked in it's precise position before being removed. This nut sets the exact plunger rest position. The seal prevents the small amount of fuel that seeps past the plunger in the barrel from entering the intake manifold, causing a rich start condition.

    David i have the correct guide pins set for re-installing the two halves back together in exact alignment and an ultrasonic cleaner you could have borrowed from me for this video - haha but did not realise you were going to tackle this for a video clip. German engineering +30yrs ago with such fine tolerances is pretty impressive to say the least

      @@MMWA-DAVE Tbh, i gave in chasing a non start situation. My local bosch dealer diagnosed it and i rebuilt the distributor, they re fitted it and the car still didnt start so they said it was the ezl. i took the car back still not running and found fuel in the oil, about 1.5 ltres. Please can you tell me , is there an o ring on the outside, on the base, close to the shim? Thanks for your replies and your videos

    • @oldietolfree1632
      @oldietolfree1632 Před 4 lety

      mine is the same as yours m104.

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  Před 4 lety +1

      joseph o'dea Theres a large o ring that sits between the bottom of the fuel distributor and the air flow meter housing. If the ezl is blown you will have no ignition - it is important not to just test an ezl ignition car by watching for a spark from a disconnected lead to the block etc it must always have a spark plug connected as this alone can and does destroy them too.

    Was there a specific problem you were trying to solve by rebuilding this, or are you just staying in keeping with the rest of the rebuild?
    Either way, hats off to you for getting stuck in and not treating it like its the shroud of Turin!

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  Před 4 lety

      Matt Teee mainly because i know the whole fuel system on this cars been contaminated by the utterly terrible fuel tank that was in the car when i got it. The fuel was putrid. It definitely needed the clean out at the very least as it was all sticky and yellow brown inside so why not throw a modern diaphragm in there while its open 😄

    At 11:52, does the notch on the barrel line up with the other notch on the rim of the hole that the barrel inserts through? Looks like that if those two notches line up, then that tiny circular hole in the barrel, just above the black o-ring, would line up with the hole within the interior of the channel that the barrel slides through? However, then, when I position it thusly, the slitted channels of the barrel don't line up with the corresponding holes for each cylinder. I'm re-attempting my rebuild today, since I know now that I made a few mistakes. Looking over the whole assembly, I see that the slitted holes will line up properly if that notch in the barrel does indeed point to that region as you've specified. Also, on mine, looks like that the other notch on the rim is in a different place.

    You never know what can show up on Ytube. Wow, I'm a bit of a Benz nut, ... You are over thinking this. ... Take it apart, notes , pics. Clean and organization. Its not hard. The W124 is a great car. my 1991 300E 6 cyl. 3 litre, just keeps on running. Change all the fluids, everything, often, two oil and filter changes a year. Syn. Mobil One. Front pads every two years, they are not expensive. Even with 50 percent left, change them. Maybe you had a Idle issue, floating up and down or stalling. Too Low. Idle. ? ... It's vapor lock. I experience this on occasion. A Hot start after the car is parked for ten to twenty minutes, on a warm day. It can hit 38.C - 48.C here in Adelaide South Australia in the summer. I wired a switch, located it beside the console to turn on the fans, with the A.C. off. Great in Traffic, If left in the On position, they will run for about 15 minutes, after parking, car locked and blows the heat away. Remove the mechanical fan completely. Over 70 - 80 k.m you do not need any fan at all.

      @kevingreen9983 Před 4 lety

      MMWA thanks. That is looking like the only option. But at £350+ for a second hand one, looks like I’ve had a very expensive accident!!
      Seems crazy the parts aren’t available. Found a few firms that offer refurbished units so they must have access to the parts. Was also thinking about getting one scanned and 3D printed.

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  Před 4 lety

      Kevin Green as far as im aware they just scrap other units for spares. Im not aware of anyone making the individual parts other than whats in the rebuilding kit. I beleive bosch themselves have even stopped rebuilding fuel distributors and stopped making them new a long time ago.
