Decided to play something that no one ever requested.
Absolutely no one.
Ever.
Requested.
...
Ever.
FK YES LETS GOOOOOOO
Is this something I should have heard of?
YOOOO I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SERIES FOREVER, LET'S GOOO!
Oh damn ok! Hey I'm down, you got me into ace attorney, I'm down for this, let's go!
huh thats funny why would you play a game no one requested
Nico, this is very important: CHECK EVERY TREASURE CHEST TWICE
He will check every "chest" twice.
Both sides of the "chest".
Including the quest
Sounds fake imo
@@KaiserMazoku THIS
@@neonoah3353wait really? I started a few days ago myself 💀
NicoB, there's actually a bit of real world lore behind why the treasure chests have these weird quotes in them when you check them after looting them. When the game was being worked on by the localization team at XSEED, they found out that even though the chests have the same line in Japanese, "the chest is empty", each chest had its own text box instead of being one single instance that always pops up regardless of what chest it is. XSEED saw there was plenty of space in each text box, and decided it'd be funny if each treasure chest said something different and funny. It's a good part of the reason why the localization for this game stands out among other JRPGs, and shows how much the team loved this game as well.
"I'm sad there isn't any fluff dialogue" Nico is not ready for the sheer amount of fluff that exists in later games
It's in this game as well too tbh, so many npcs to talk to that update after every major event
Which is why the games takes so much time to be translated for international release. SO. MUCH. DIALOGUE.
@@RogerLaLoutre
Luckily they seem to be fixing that. Only 2 more games to translate and the 2nd one hasn’t even come out in Japan yet.
Yeah the fluff is almost exclusively within the NPCs
Yeah didnt this series almosy die due to fluff dialogue? I never got around to playing trails, but I played enough Ys to know how Falcom handles NPCs
Brief note: Scherezard (or Charizard, as most LPrs call her) is a reference to Scheherazade, narrator of the Arabian Nights. She is taken in by a king who takes "pump and dump" to a new level, executing every woman he beds the next morning. To save herself, she begins telling him various stories in pieces, always leaving off on a cliffhanger so the king can't bear to kill her and never find out what happens next. The stories themselves are a collection of various legends and folktales, perhaps most notably including Aladdin, Sinbad, and the Legend of the Forty Thieves. It's even referenced in the opening lines of Aladdin's Friend Like Me: "Ali Baba had them Forty Thieves, and Scheherazade had a thousand tales...." ....Oh, and the opening song being titled Arabian Nights.
....I thought that was interesting.
Normally I’d do the “OH MY GOD ITS HAPPENING” bit, but I genuinely think I just wet my pants.
To my trails fans who have waited for this moment, tonight we dine on whatever we have in our recipe books
Something that regens CP
Laughs in chronoburst moebius
Another amazing thing about Trails: It's NPCs. There are a lot of NPCs, and they update dialogue constantly. Like, "after every plot event" constantly. NPCs even have ongoing storylines of their own. You can follow an NPC's storyline across a bunch of games and see their life change completely.
However, npc burn out can be a thing, so I don't expect him to keep up every npc dialogue update.
@@volianx3939 even if he does its not necessary to record them, I personally talk to them all but the most healthy way is to just keep track of the few, even then its usually a good idea to check every NPC in case of hidden quests etc.
Yes. I've seen a streamer who was absolutely shocked with himself that after 4 years and multiple Trails games in between, he still knew all the NPCs of a city by sight, despite a massive graphic change.
@@mastermindmonokuma That's a valid way of going about it, especially about hidden quests.
@@volianx3939 Really the only thing that he absolutely shouldnt skip are quests, SOME NPC dialogue and the books. Everything else is extra and not all that necessary to record.
Persona 3 fans : "Looks like my summer vacation is...over"
Trails fans : "Mine just fricking started 😎 WoOOoHoOOo🎉"
Sounds like what Roxas says to Sora
@@animeking4953 Well that's what I was going for 😂😂
@@animeking4953 because that's literally word for word what he said
@@johnpitro4585 I’m not exaggerating, you just described the feeling of having Roxas’s theme play before Sora’s theme in KH2, both in game and in the soundtrack. 😂
I passed over this video in my feed not realizing it was Nico's because my brain simply couldn't comprehend that he'd ever actually play a Trails game 😂
26:08 Note on fluff dialogue: The major focus of the fluff dialogue in these games is and always has been the NPCs. All of them have multiple lines of dialogue per conversation and they all have new conversations regularly as the story progresses. I have seen 95% of all the dialogue in this game, and I can vouch for saying it is all worth seeing but is nowhere near required reading as most of it is concerned with each NPC's little story.
#1 thing I love about this series is how detailed the people in the world are. After like, every minor or major story beat there is new NPC text. And 99% of those NPC's are named and have their own substories happening at the same time
No other RPG series does this (to my knowledge)
From what I played of Persona 2 it seems to do a very similar thing. Maybe ps1 jrpg devs are just built different
Xenoblade is the closest RPG with this feature (that I know of)
Didn't Tales of Symphonia do it to lesser extend?
Mother 3 has a shocking amount of unique NPC dialogue as well!
The world is the same across the games, but not always the same country. The Sky trilogy (the first three games) takes place here in Liberl, but eventually you'll get see places like the Erebonian Empire or the Rebublic of Calvard, which are also on your map, but over in the corners. Seeing different countries, with different cultures and politics, is part of why everyone always praises the world building in these games.
Don't forget Crossbell.
Scherazard: "You seemed so curious to see what was inside the boxes, so why don't you open them and take a look?"
*Joshua and Estelle open the boxes and find... an Emblem in the shape of Mickey Mouse.*
Joshua: "Oh no..."
Estelle: "I don't get it, what is it?"
*the sounds of stomping feet go up the stairs, as a white duck in blue clothes slams open the door.*
Donald: "LOOK SORA, A LUCKY EMBLEM!"
Man, with Nico playing Y5, which is notoriously known to be one of the longest Yakuza games, I wonder what he'll play for his other series.
Nico: "So here's Trails in the Sky"
Axel: "TWO!?"
To be fair, Sky 1 is one of the shorter games in the series. On the other hand, this is a black hole of a series that will suck you in beyond belief.
@@uchytjes10 this series got me through lockdown I can confirm this
This might be a repeat of the kingdom hearts binge
The question is, can he finish at least one of them in time for Metaphor and the P3R DLC?
@@uchytjes10after i played sky 1 I played the next 10 games within 3 months
I can’t wait to hear Nico voice Estelle in a nutshell
*Later*
Estelle have join the Council of Voices
Makes sense with how the voice he gave her just automatically became unique. While Josuha gets the Apollo/Shuichi voice.
Some pointers to help you:
- Selge is basically the game’s measurement of distance (like miles/yards/meters)
- Aidios is pronounced “Aid-dios”
- As you surmise, Sepith up bonus is where you can get more Sepith if you attack while having it.
The Sepith Up bonus also applies per hit!
So multihit attacks, crafts and arts can give out WAY more.
I burned S-Crafts before on these in Hard mode so that I can afford more equipment and slot upgrades... xD
I'll be perfectly honest with you: I have *no idea* who you are, never heard of you before.
But now that you jumped in the rabbit hole, I'll stick around and accompany you on this massive journey.
Should you keep playing, you'll see the time commitment is well worth it.
Welcome to Zemuria, Nico!
P.S. Check treasure chests twice, talk to people (dialogue changes a lot!), enjoy the music, study the orbment system; it'll take a while for the story to pick up, but in the meanwhile you'll have many other wonderful little things to focus on!
Welcome to the picky penguins me friend, since you're new I'll let you know that schedule wise Trails will go up every other day, Nico tends to do two series side by side. Hope you enjoy the ride with us and who knows, maybe you'll find some other LPs of his you'll enjoy

@@caramelkalin6696 The picky penguins welcome all. Enjoy the ride my friend
Welcome! As a long time picky penguin, I know nothing about Trails and I'm excited to see the journey begin too!
I'm sure the rest of the commenters have already said and talked about all that needs said about the game, so I will say this: This game series is special to a lot of people, and it especially special to me. These first few games have actually had the power to make me cry uncontrollably, something that nothing else has been able to do. The characters and the world they inhabit feel far too real for what an isometric sprite based game should be able to communicate, and it is all the more precious for it. I wish you great luck on the future of this series.
Same ♡
I almost cried to the harmonica sound I'm not explaining why if you know you know.
Heads up Nico, allmost all NPC's in any available town will have new (usually very good) dialogue after almost every major story event (and some of it is very important and very much missable), this is one of the many reasons why this series has such amazing world building
*Sees nico plays Trails*
*Brings out comically large popcorn*
This gonna take a looooong time.
Speaking as someone who’s watching this LP so he can eventually hear “Tie a Link of ARCUS!” over and over in The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, I could not agree more.
The Godot Voice: "Well, Nico. You better take a big cup of black coffee, to brace yourself for the trip you are going." ☕
As you were able to tell, yes Joshua is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. Don't need to tell you all the stuff he's been in.
Estelle is voiced by Stephanie Sheh, who voiced Hinata from Naruto, Orihime from Bleach (which is funny considering Joshua shares a VA with Ichigo) and is the current VA for Sailor Moon herself. You would most know her though as the voice of Mikan in DR2.
And Orihime for the Bleach fans.
And was Mikan from Danganronpa 2
Shes also voicing Maria in the Sonic x Shadow Generations prologue episodes.
And Scherazard's voiced by Michelle Ruff: Rukia from Bleach, Fujiko Mine in Lupin III, Kawakami from Persona 5, and Yukari in the original Persona 3, as well as Sinon in Sword Art Online.
Mikan AND Hajime.
Honestly, good for the Trails fans. I've always wanted to go into this blind and who better to do that with than Nico.
And now Nico can say yes when Sephiroth asks him if he's played Trails in the Sky.
Pfft!
Wait, when did this happen?! 😂
Sephiroth is making a list, and he's checking it twice
He's gonna find out which LPs Nico's put on ice
Wow the penguins did it, they finally got him to play this series. I never played this series so let’s see what the Penguins are always raving about.
I really hope I like it
@@crazybagel9979 yeah never played this series myself or watched anyone let's see what all the hype is about
I'm currently in the second game and can confirm this is amazing
Ive never even heard of this game so im also very curious 👀
If you care to play along there is a mod using the voice acting from the ps vita version called the sora voice mod which adds voice acting for all main and side quests in the 3 sky games adds something extra to enjoy in it even the cats are voiced accurately to their customs Mya〜uun
Ah also... this series as a whole has quite a few games that are a slow burn. This is the slowest burn of them all. But the payoff ia genuinely amazing so by the end of this, you won't even remember how slow it was.
i personally didn't feel like this is the slowest of them all but i definitely hear what you say, i started Sky in like March/April last year more as a favor for a friend as he wanted me to check the games out at least.... yesterday i started Daybreak
I played this game like 2 or 3 years ago…and yeah…I got real burnt out, started SC right after, played like maybe 10 hours and haven’t touched it since
@@mariopkmnzelda that's why taking breaks between these games is important. Trails burn out is a thing and it has happened to the biggest fans of the series (including me). Some people CAN binge them, but most can't. Burn out after "just" one game is quite early comparatively, but stranger things have happened.
I did play them back to back myself, however that was over the course of 2 1/2 years, plus I always play 2 games at the same time, so whenever I did not feel like Trails, I would just play that other game. That helped a lot.
@@oOPrettywinxOo yeah idk, I’d like to get back into it and see what all the hype is about (mostly cause persona is my fav series and trails comes up a lot when you look up games similar to persona because it has social link elements in the later games) but at this point I’ve forgotten most of the plot of FC and don’t wanna replay it, but maybe I’ll use Nico’s LP as a refresher and then jump into SC again afterwards now that it’s been so long
@@mariopkmnzelda you could do that, or you could read a plot summary of FC. There are many out there (in video and written form).
I am one of these people who remembers most details of stories, even things I would rather forget (like when I get spoiled, I read someone even just alluding to something once, I will not forget it), so it's not a problem I personally have.
EDIT: but also you shouldn't force yourself. For most people the ending of FC is enough to hook them, if that did not happen to you, then maybe the series just isn't for you. The social system exists in later games, that is true, but it is nowhere as important as in Persona. It's a side thing to the main plot.
I should say that part of his series’ charm is the NPC dialogue.
NPC’s go through their own mini arcs separate of side quests and main story and you only experience these fun little moments when you talk to them.
They have dialogue that updates with every development in the main story and that holds true for the ones in locations you can return to at the time.
It may come to a point where a complete jobber NPC ends up becoming one of your favourite characters on the level of the main ones.
The Trails series is known for its world building, but Estelle Bright is my favorite video game character of all time (and probably my favorite character in all of fiction). Plus, the story of this game just escalates and escalates until you realize that you're sitting on the edge of your seat.
The world building is absolutely S-tier, but the characters and story are among the greatest in their own right. So excited to see you enjoy this treasure of a game!
🤝 Fellow Estelle fanatic
Heck yeah! Estelle is Bestelle!
I bid you my warmest welcome to Zemuria! Estelle Bright, FUCK YEAH THAT'S RIGHT!!!!
Some Basics : I see you noticed how insanely natural the dialogue in this game sounds. I can assure you that this follows through the rest of sky, and the dialogue is IMPECCABLE. the second thing I want you to know is that the writer of this game is absolutely drunk on detail. after every major story beat, every single NPC gets updated dialogue, some including major scenes, and have their own story arcs even as the game progresses. The attention to detail in both the lore and especially the main characters is a highlight and frankly goes above and beyond anything I have ever seen.
Gameplay wise, it's a mix between an SRPG and a regular turn based game, and you may have noticed that Orbments are very, very similar to materia, so you will likely pick that up quickly. ONe thing I do need to warn you about is that this game has some of what I like to call "old game jank" in that heal points are rare, and that in the early game you don't really have enough MP to do a full dungeon. Once you hit the early midgame though, the combat really hits its stride. Remember to unlock everyone's orbment slots ASAP!
I have already been told you are using a guide, which is absolutely the right thing to do as these games have some truly cruel permanent missables, in both dialogue and items. Above all nico, have fun voicing these characters. I know I did, and it was an incredible experience I know you will love.
Also CHECK EVERY CHEST TWICE!
PS: That's totally the Legendary JYB voicing Joshua in the in battle dialogue
I’m gonna miss not hearing that catchphrase in a let’s play 😭
Who told you he's using a guide?
@@deatheater6222 Nexus on the discord said he gave Nico a general guide he made for missable stuff.
@@sansthedog cool
I hope he plays the trilogy, sc and 3rd are my top favorites in all trails
The fluff dialogue is all centered on the NPCs, i wouldnt really recommend trying to read it all, but basically every single NPC has new dialogue after almost every major (or minor) story cutscene in this game. Its actually insane.
Man, I forgot just how strong this game started off character wise.
Oh look, Nico is playing the Trails in the Sky
HOLD UP!?
REALLY!!!
HALLELUJAH!
We got Trails in the Sky and Yakuza 5 at the same time! This is truly a dream come true!
So Nico, you have officially made everyone who had been requesting this for so long happy. And while not being one of them, I do hope to enjoy this LP alongside you for this journey.
Also, I do suggest just taking your time and don't do anything to stress yourself out. After all, it's like you said, this LP is a risk due to being your introduction to a new series. Meaning that taking your time to learn and understand all the mechanics is needed for you to have the best experience possible.
And before I forget, I and many others are all being introduced to this series through your playthrough.
Nihon Falcom, huh? One of the oldest video game developers that has made games that very few of us here in the West have played, yet those who have adore their games so very much.
The Ys series, Popful Mail, the Trails games, and the one I randomly stumbled across and loved, Gurumin, which stars a small gremlin child as a protagonist, kinda like Estelle.
Games with a level of heart and charm to their worlds that are rarely surpassed. I am excited.
I bet if you told Nico last week:
"Hey man you know Trails is gonna do 36K views in 1 day"

27:16 Note on measurements in the game: Its basically all metric. Selge is equal to 100 meters. This isn't explained anywhere in game (the equivalency to metric that is).

Arge is meters
Selge is 100 meters
Curim is kilograms
Torim is 1000 kilograms
weird that their standard is 100 meters, you'd think it would be KM

Hey Nico, I will probably do my best to provide soundtrack information for this series!! Falcom doesn't credit their composers properly so...
The composers for this game are Wataru Ishibashi, Hayato Sonoda, Takahide Murayama (AKA Eiichiro Yanagi) and Yukihiro Jindo! Maiko Hattori also composed one track but was unfortunately uncredited.
53:46 The regular battle theme in this game is called “Sophisticated Fight”, and was composed by the incredibly talented Wataru Ishibashi, who unfortunately passed away in 2014. One of the other composers for this game, Takahide Murayama (AKA Eiichiro Yanagi) was one of his closest friends and wrote his eulogy after his death. In 2022 he actually did a cover of this song for a Legend of Heroes series fan-album called Resonant Saga and dedicated it to his “now deceased friend who he spent his time [at Falcom] with” in the description of his upload. I truly believe it’s a really special song for many people, for both the fans and creators alike.
Oh hell yeah, a music commentator! The music of this series is fantastic and, in my opinion, the Sky arc has the best soundtrack of all time. So many songs use the same exact melody but feel completely different and they're all fantastic. I look forward to hearing music trivia from you.
I AM SO HERE FOR THIS

31:30 Plot twist: the test is sitting through a lecture from Schera on tarot cards that would put Edogawa to shame in its length and detail. And it’s unskippable.
After all this time, I'm impressed... I slacked off so much you actually got to playing this game before me.
Welcome to the game for the next two years, everybody!
i take two years. since i dont know him very well i was actually thinking it might take 5... counting all TLOH games... But i take 2 years bargain easily
Welcome to the Trails cult Nico! You will never leave...
A few things:
Check every chest twice! You will see why.
The scripts for these games are massive, for one particular reason.
The dialogue for almost every single NPC changes regularly, pretty much after each story beat they have new things to say. Some NPC even have little mini character arcs, sometimes even across games. It would probably be too much for a lets play to talk to everyone throughout the game, but maybe just pick a few NPCs to check in with regularly.
In addition to that there are books and newspapers that flesh out the world, I would recommend at the very least to read the newspapers.
Nico decided that 2024 was the year of RPGs.
I'm excited to see what this game is about.
I've been starved for proper Trails let's plays, i'm here for every step of the way.
I took a bit of a break from watching your content, but I gotta come back for trails. ITS TIME FOR ULTRA VIOLENCE EVERYONE!
I am so happy you finally got around to this series!
What makes Trails pretty unique is that yes, every entry is interconnected and set within the same continent, Zemuria. The series is split into arcs and game that begun it all is in what's considered the first arc, Liberl Arc.
But honestly, don't worry too much about future games and just enjoy them as they come. You're gonna love them, I'm 100% certain of it. Also, talk with NPCs as often as you can, they have good dialogues.
Please don't spoil ANY moments for yourself,
FC - pure atmosphere; SC - pure atmosphere + rage on hard and higher.
Personally Hard has always been the right amount of difficult without being frustrating to me. Nightmare is the frustrating one
@@BlueCrimson10 Well yeah kinda; personally i, while playing on hard, had only 2 bad moments (10 or more restarts): 1) Worms summoned by Valter; 2) Loewe without Kevin.
Its nice to have a game with no voice acting so Nicob can do more of his crazy adlibbing and character voices. Thats always a highlight for me during a Nicob series.
Well there is very limited voice acting. There's also another version of the game with updated character art, music, and full voice acting. in Japanese. There are patches for it on Steam if that's your thing.
Yeah, he didn't play the Evo version which is a more updated graphics and some main story voice acting. But, I love the classic so it's a win for me XD
Welcome to Trails, Nico. I'm sure you're going to love it here. And I really do mean that.
Dude… I’m gonna cry…
THIS IS A LONG TIME COMING. WELCOME TO THE 11 GAME AND MANY MORE GAMES TO COME JOURNEY!!!!
Starting the Trails series was something I did on a whim and now I'm to the point where I've imported the last three Jp titles upon their release. It's something special, truly a franchise like no other. I hope you enjoy it!
I've never played the trails series either so this will be a journey I'll be experiencing for the first time alongside you all.
I'm just realizing Nico thought Joshua was the lead protagonist and could change his name XD
Now that I've gotten over my joy of this being a playthrough I guess I'll put up some tips
1: Orbal lines. It's not super well explained but you noticed that there were 2 different colors on the orbments, those are orbal lines. When you equip a quartz you get an element value which unlocks spells (like atk 1 giving fire bolt). Orbal lines keep separate counts of elemental values making it harder to get higher spells. It's hard to explain but a basic rule is the less orbal lines a character has the better they are at magic as they have easier access to more powerful spells. Read the arts section in your book if you want to see the elements you need for spells and try to fit them in one color group
2: sepith. It tells you that you can sell sepith for money, never do this like ever, sepith is way more important for making quartz and opening slots in your orbment.
3: quests. Side quests are actually important because it's the main way your actually going to make any amount of money in this game so do as many as you can. You get rewarded really well for doing them. There's also unmarked secret quest out there but honestly your better off using a guide for that BS
4: Game over. If a battle isn't going your way just get a game over as it will allow you to retire from the beginning, it really saves on resources, but you're on normal and I've never played this game on anything above hard so I don't know how often that will be.
HOLY SHIT HE ACTUALLY LISTENED. I’m not a trails fan by any means but I’ve seen ppl in the Discord request this game for years!!!
There are a lot of things to be said about this series, but most are best left to be experienced on the games themselves.
So glad you're playing this, man.
29:59 "Are there any chests in this game" he asks. Oh boy, let us tell you. Yes, there are chests. And as many tell you, you ALWAYS check them twice.
DUDE YES THANK YOU. The holy trinity is now complete. Kingdom Hearts, Yakuza and Trails. You’re in for a ride pal. Easily my favourite video game franchise of all time. Hope you enjoy.
I NEVER COMMENT BUT HOLY I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS. I started this series last year and all I have to say is you're in for a really fun ride.
Trails as a series is nearly 1000 hours long and is still one of the biggest commitments I've ever made for media. It's both like One Piece in its length and the MCU in its continuity. If he sticks with this this is gonna be really fun. Good timing with the most recent game's release too lol
I've often described Trails as one of the Two "Literary Epics" in Gaming. Why only those two? The rest get laden with plotholes, don't make prior games feel cohesive to the plot, characters don't reappear, etc etc. Tons of individual major issues.
Trails is one of those that any plotholes are explained away in a coherent and well thought out fashion. Characters return. Motifs carry over. So on and so forth.
Thus, it is a Literary Epic. Everything ties together, making these 13(!) games (and 1 sadly half-assed anime/mobigame) into one excellently woven together story that earned it the title of "Literary Epic" to me.
Only other story to do it successfully like that is final Fantasy XIV (at least since late 1.X because of the complete change in directorial, and even then they've basically resolved most of those problems).
Exactly, Trails is literally the best aspect of One Piece (The worldbuilding) and the MCU (the interconnectivity) combined into one.
@@katomamundara8106 well, i would say there is a part or 2 that is retconned in later iteration, but otherwise, i am happy with the series up to dawn 1 and 2 with some stuff i won't get into for a long while.
@@BloodKitten_ Trails retcons lean towards retroactive contextualization instead of retroactive continuity (retcon), but not in the best way.
IE: They were adding details we didn't see in the original release of Azure, but by actually retconning those characters in, it makes it more retcon than retroactive contextualization. IE: Having Towa actually come out of the Train, instead of having a new line where they mention her via a new side quest. Or Juna showing up on scene.
Since you mentioned MCU (up to Phase 3), I can honestly say that to me, Trails is the MCU of JRPGs. And to think this existed before the MCU was established.
Yakuza 5 AND TRAILS!! This is everything I've wanted, thank you Nico lol. Honestly hope the Trails series goes well for you, and these games, especially this one, can be a slow burn.
He will forever love this series once he finishes the entire trilogy. Hope he continues this until the current which is daybreak!!! Good luck nicoB!!
was in the middle of playing Trails through Daybreak (11th game) than i saw this. MY BODY IS READY
I just want to say that giving Estelle a gremlin voice is pretty perfect
Aidios DOES answer our prayers!!! Well... now that it's finally happening I have absolutely zero idea what to say... haha...
I sincerely hope you enjoy your time with this game Nico. You've been a source of inspiration for me and finally getting to see you play a game from a series that very quickly rose the ranks of favorites will be a special time indeed. Make sure to check treasure chests twice! And don't feel too intimidated by the Quartz system. With a bit of time it becomes very easy to understand. I can already imagine some of the WILD things that you'll have these characters say and I'M 200% HERE FOR IT BABY!!! NICO'S FINALLY PLAYING A TRAILS GAME WHOOOOOO!!!🔥🎉🥳🎉🔥
Yeah, the dialogue and worldbuilding affected a lot of people for how good it is.
Plus, the characters are phenomenal. Estelle as a protagonist is ever refreshing
So! While the English version of this game doesn't have full voice acting built in (there's a mod to input the JP voices from the vita version), as you heard there are voices in battle. So i'll be informing you of the various VAs in this game as we go!
Estelle - Stephanie Sheh (Sailor Moon, Orihime Inoue, Mercedes, and more!)
Joshua - the man himself, Johnny Young Bosch!
Schera - Michelle Ruff (Yukari Takeba, Sadayo Kawakami, and more!)
I first played Trails near the end of 2020 and then binged 75% of the series in 3 months. Ever since then I've been patiently waiting for the day you'd check out this incredible series, and Im so happy that the wait has been worth it! Please enjoy the One Piece of JRPGs Nico, you're in for a long ride!
Are you already on Daybreak?
@4play2004
In February 2023 I started with Cod Steel 1 played up to Cold Steel 3
Started 4 watched the cutscene and I decided to go back to the first 5 games and then finished 4 and Reverie (which where easily the worst on a series I started to love)
I did start daybreak when it came out last week on ps5 and am already 39 hours in near the tail end of chapter 3
And other than missing secret books and fishing
I really like Daybreak
It's good that the franchise finally has stakes again
The Xeno to Trails pipeline is inevitable!
How dare you call me out like this. 😆
And then next he'll play the tales series and then every single title he'll go what the heck is going on
I feel targetted
Haven't really had much of an interest in the trails series and I've played all xenoblade games save for X. Are the games similar in some way?
Just say you got into JRPGs
HOLY MOLY TRAILS
Seriously, I never expected you to start it, Nico! I’ve been a huge fan of this series for the past few years and used to recommend it all the time, but I gave up on it a while back because you were so unsure about starting. I’m really happy you decided to take the plunge after all!
You mentioned the start of this story seemed pretty standard, and I just want to say you’re absolutely correct! I’m not sure what else you’ve heard about Trails, but to me the basic concept of the series is that it’s a very straightforward, honest sort of JRPG plot and the appeal it holds is in how much care the developers and localization team put into making it the *best* possible version of the plot and game they could think of.
The dialogue and characters are extremely good as you said, but not just that - the NPCs are incredible and really make this feel like a living and breathing world. You don’t have to talk to every single one (although it’s not a bad idea!) but I’d encourage you to find people you’re interested in and talk to them every time you get a chance to so you can see how their story updates over the course of the game.
You can also read each and any book you pick up, whether they’re newspapers, novels, or textbooks. Each one adds a little more flavor to the world so I’d recommend checking them out whenever you can as well!
Turbo mode is a huge help when you’re dealing with all of this too. It was added by the localization team and seriously cuts down on all the time you’re spending running around talking to people, exploring areas, doing quests, and fighting monsters. It’s honestly one of the biggest things Trails has going for it over other JRPGs - think of how much turbo helped in your Xenoblade 1 LP for example.
That’s all I have for now, but I’m absolutely going to keep up with this LP and I’m excited to see what you think of the game! I’m certain it won’t disappoint you!
I started this series this year, and I reacted to it the way Nico reacted to Xenoblade 2. I’m in love, and I can’t wait to see Trails claim another victim.
YES. YES. YES. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. THE TIME HAS COME, AND SO HAVE I.
It is finally time for Nico to talk to every NPC and await the release of the next ingame newspaper with baited breath!
You might think I am joking, but newspapers are serious business in Trails. °^°
Been a Trails fan for a few years now, have fun!

Very unintentional. Very funny.
This is awesome. I have never played this game specifically, but I have played the Trails of Cold Steel 1, 2, 3, and 4, and Trails in Zero, and I've grown to really enjoy the series as a whole.
Don’t mess with Estelle. She’ll jump on you if you’re yelling. Only she gets to yell.
Estelle: Yelling does not help with the healing!
I have literally 0 idea about anything related to this series, but keep hearing it brought up a lot, so I'm here for the ride! This wouldn't be the first time one of your LPs introduced me to a new game/series to love.
I played Trails in the Sky on Playstation Portable 10 years ago. Now I'm playing Trails through Daybrake, the last localized game, on PS5. Yes this series is big.
Holy craptacos! Nico, wtf? This came from NO-WHERE! Oh boy, you thought Kingdom Hearts was a dive? Prepare for Trails dive. Dear lord, you have no idea what you're getting in to. LET'S GO PENGUINS!
YOOOOO THE FALCOM ARC BEGINS
OH AND TO GIVE A SMALL HINT TOO.
A good thing to get and read at the beginning of every chapter is the newspaper! There's a new issue every chapter! On the same front. The coolest thing with Trails is that EVERY NPC HAS A NAME and most have a continuing story as the game goes on.. sometimes across multiple games! It's so COOL
Oh gosh Nico, this is so unexpected! I started this series back in 2019 and it has easily become one of my favorite JRPG franchises of all time! The overarching story is the most intriguing part to this series for me! Hope you have a blast! Just a small heads up though, Trails in the Sky is probably the slowest game to get into, but I promise you, when the story amps up, it amps up in this crazy world building story! Enjoy :)
I never thought I see the day any of the let's play channels I watch will play this
Between the review, the new game is getting breaking into a more mainstream audience. This is the year of the Trails series, and I've never been more happy
Welcome to the beginning of a VERY long saga of brilliance! 13 games deep, 20 years long. A story will unfold. Let's go!
A couple tips, about the bonuses.
-Sepith Up makes it so every hit on that turn will generate some sepith. The type of sepith generated depends on the enemy. That means you want to use multi-hit moves whenever the Sepith Up bonus shows up, whether it's an ally's or an enemy's. Like, say, Estelle's billion-hit S-Craft, Barrage. If the enemy gets the bonus, you also spill out some sepith if they hit you, but I was never able to confirm whether or not that means you LOSE sepith, or even whether or not you pick up that sepith that you spilled later.
-HP/CP up activates at the start of the turn, before you or the enemy start moving. So, if you want to steal it from an enemy, better S-Break during the turn before it. If it's an enemy's move, right after it the S-Craft unleashes. If it's an ally's turn, you unleash and then they continue their turn, unless you've already selected something for them to do and a target for it.
-There will also be some damage up or critical bonuses. It's worth noting that critical bonuses apply to healing as well, even healing items, so that's something to keep in mind. Only for HP, though: it doesn't apply to EP or CP restoring.
I never seen anything about this game, but its giving me a weird small sense of nostalgia
Also loving the art, the backgrounds are sooo detailed
