#34 Last window opening - Stone house renovation in Italy

  • We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls!
The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls... were taken down with a coffee spoon and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.
Follow our journey as we turn this old stone house into a beautiful home 😊.

Love it. Read about a couple doing same in England. The front doorstep was worn too much into a scallop so they visited a stone mason about a new one. “No, you don’t need me, just turn the original stone upside down....that was what they were designed for.” They flipped it over and found somebody had already done that 200 years before...

Thank you for all your hard work AND also doing the extra work with the videos bringing us along too on your journey. We know it takes so much longer to capture your work on video and really appreciate all the time it takes you to do that. We are in Washington state in the USA. Thanks for doing the captions in English too!! We also love your doggie checking up on you. May God overwhelm you with blessings!

Found your videos a couple of days ago and binge watched them all. So impressed from beginning to end. The amount of work that when into this rebuild is enormous. Like the dog, he likes to give his stamp of approval on the cement. Can't imagine the strength it took to do all the work that has been done. Love the sub floor idea. The roof looks amazing too. So glad to have found you and will continue to follow your progress. Thanks for sharing.

Maddi, you're very good at handling the maze of regulations and agreements. We are full of admiration for Vince in improving masonry skills. There's been a lot of progress from episode to episode. Really cool project, I just hope you do not work alone with dangerous tools, or if you do then call each other in regular times, especially at start of work with cutting equipment and at the end. My dad accidentaly cut out his thumb finger when doing wood because his glove got caught into the machine and if he weren't taken to hospital swiftly who knows what happened. But he was and they were able to sew the thumb back on. Keep safe and check on each other! Also hoping that you discuss the more structural changes with professional over house walls/structure integrity, some of those windows cuts looked like you are cutting into bases/heels of the wall pillars that were made intentionally large in order to split weight. 👀 Fingers crossed all is safe and works out for you!

Hi and thank you for joining us! The concrete wall is a retaining wall, it was made because the old stone wall was starting to collapse because of the terrain pushing. The other wall is our "house" wall, insulated with hempcrete blocks. The space between the two of them is to make sure there isn't any humidity transfer towards the inside of the house ☺️
