  • Time to go the End of the Line again! This time, back to the top of the Tube Map and one of the two branches of the Northern Line, at Edgware. What is out here in Zone 5 in the London Borough of Barnet? And wasn't there a scheme once years ago to extend the line further? Let's find out ...
Jay Foreman of course covers a lot of this as well in his first ever Unfinished London episode: • The unfinished Norther...

Me again. It’s so sad to see what’s happened to Brockley Hill in the 13 years since we went there to film the first Unfinished London. It’s even sadder to know how unlikely it is that anything will be done about it, since it’s in privately owned limbo.

Awesome video Geoff! That fact about bus stop G has blown my mind a little bit. I used that bus station every day for school, so I knew (and still know) every route by heart. But I never realised there was anything special about it. It’s only just occurred to me now that no other bus station in London does it this way, with a single stop for all alighting. That’s my favourite kind of new discovery - one made up of things you didn’t know you already knew.

Not wanting to defuse your enthusiasm for a Wombles tidy up, but if I followed your narrative correctly and that land is up for sale, it probably means it's private land rather than public and would be a responsibility of the current owner rather than the local council. However as it's up for sale I would expect that the current landowner won't do anything and wait until the new developer purchases it.

I realised from the platform as the doors closed and the train headed away. Thanks as I knew that London Transport used Gill Sans on its timetables, I always assumed that would have replaced all signage with that typeface as well.

I was on a train from London Euston to Crewe and about 20 mins into the journey some bloke sitting nearby asked me when the train would be stopping at Liverpool Street.
I assumed he was talking about Liverpool Lime Street so told him that it would take around 2.5 hours more and he looked absolutely horrified.
Turned out he actually did want to go just a few stops on the tube to Liverpool Street.

Geoff, I worked in television producing for 18 years, about half of which or more was shooting in the field. We very frequently had audio issues like you mentioned. We did have a dedicated audio tech with us along with a camera person, and our audio tech could very slightly compensate for noise, modulating it out with his equipment. But honestly, a bad audio environment is just that. We constantly were waiting for planes flying over outdoors, and indoors when conducting interviews the faint noise from air conditioning or heating would be audible on our mics. If it were a short interview, we would even have the cooling/heating briefly shut off because of this. It’s far less noticeable for the viewer though if it’s constant. If noises start and stop on the other hand, it draws attention to itself. I was never a specialized audio tech, but I do remember our techs telling us that there was little they could do to fix it after the fact. So overall for your purposes, I think it’s fine. You’re in different environments and it’s assumed there will be noises. What I might suggest though if you can’t avoid noises and don’t want them, is to get the shots you need without you talking, record some good ambient noise to add to the shot later, and then just use VO for your talking over the shot.

Michael! what a great response - thank you. Yes, i guess somewhere in that waiting room there must have been a piece of electrical equipment (or a fan?) that i just didn't spot. Normall it's only ever happened before if i'm standing under High Voltage power lines (and the railway has a few of those!) and you deffo get interference. Happens on all mics i've had, no matter what make, and whether they're powered or not.
but mainly .. yes, i am "out and about" in changing enviroments, and i think it's just accepted isn't it? this one though just seemed more noticeable than normal, and really annoyed me!

@@rynabuns I agree and think it may be able to be dealt with in post-processing. Since it's an electrical hum, it'll be constant in frequency (and amplitude unless you do a moving shot). So if you recorded a bit of the hum by itself (no talking) then maybe you could overlay this on the clip and invert one of the audio tracks, which may work? Although there's probably lots of limitations to this - e.g. may have to be mono, environmental noise etc.

It marks the boundary between Barnet, Harrow, Brent, Camden and Westminster on it's way. I'm sure I've seen a video where one of the noble explorers finds the point there's a cross roads, where each corner is in a different borough, Barnet Brent, Camden & Westminster ? Also on that 5 min walk to Burnt Oak Broadway, cross the road and there's a rather fine salt beef restaurant and takeaway. Excellent video packed with tidbits of information not widely known. Interesting that the alighting bus stop at Edgware Bus Station is served by the most number of bus routes in London. I thought of another distinction Edgware bus station has. It is the the terminus of route 113, the only daytime bus route in London that runs from zone 5 to zone 1 (Marble Arch). Though not long ago it ran a bit further to Oxford Circus. Over the years suburb to central London routes have been progressively curtailed, so the 113 must be the only daytime one I can think of, aside from the 18 which runs from Sudbury to Euston.

@@JimTheRevelator Interesting, yes the stops in Orpington served by many bus routes may in part due to the numerous R prefixed routes that stop there, amongst others. The R routes were the local Roundabout routes launched in 1986, as Orpington was the first area in Greater London to use mini buses. There are other suburb to central London routes as you mentioned but these originate from travel card zone 4 rather than 5 as in the case of Edgware. It’s a pity that these routes terminate on the edge of zone 1 whereas the 53 for example used to run on to Oxford Circus, the 25 used to go to Victoria.

Historically, Edgware stop G is equalled by the bus stop that used to exist outside Marks & Spencer on North End at West Croydon, after the first bus station was opened. This was, moreover, not “alighting only”, so it was an absolute nightmare to get on the bus you wanted. London Transport routes were: 190, 166, 405, 409, 411, 414, 706, 707, 708, 709, 710, 109, 59, 197, 133, 68, 12, 54, 159, & 57A (though not all ran every day, but, then, neither do your 20 at Edgware). This is purely from memory, and I may have missed some. At the other end of North End, the stops were split between two locations, but not by M&S!

To me, the facade of Edgware station looks like it belongs more in a place like Virginia. It's the combination of brick walls and stone columns. This is a common look in the Middle Atlantic states of the U.S. It's a credit to the Underground that they have developed such an identity that this Georgian style is unusual. The trainshed is a nice feature, and definitely useful for avoiding rain.

With regards to people turning up and looking for the (other end of) Edgware Road, when I was a postman in the Sevenoaks district, I was driving from the hamlet of Stansted to Wrotham and a lady flagged me down and asked me where the airport was... I directed her to the Dartford Tunnel and told her to turn off at the M11 and she could pick up the signs from there - but she was anguished.

  • @LeeSmith-cf1vo

Taking about the bus stop, I immediatly thought of Orpington station, who h is similar in that it has a single alighting only stop with boarding at a bunch of nearby stops.
But I've been totting up and I think it's "only" about 12 that stop there.
    I think they are: R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R9, R10, B14, 51 and 358. But that's from memory and possibly out of date.
Of course some of these buses are, shall we say, infrequent (mostly looking at the R5 and R10 there).
Actually, now that i think about it, every single one of those buses also stops outside the Maxwell, which also has the 61 and 208 as well, and it's a regular stop. Maybe a contender for the most where you can board?

An overlooked part of the works associated with the New Works Programme, specifically the Northern Heights, is an island platform that was being built for trains via Golders Green that would have terminated at Edgware, obviously the current platforms 2 and 3 would have been for trains heading to Bushey Heath. A consequence of the Second World War and Green Belt is that the island platform never saw a train depite being built

Hello from Canada! There are a couple of terms and concepts that I learned from this video: fly tipping! Never heard the term before. We certainly have plenty of it here, but a dedicated term for it has never been in common use. It’s just illegal dumping.
Also, school buses coming into a subway station? Totally foreign concept here. School buses here just drive through neighborhoods, picking up kids one or two at a time, then deposits them at the school!
Now, I am actually from Toronto, and you’ll notice that I am speaking for all of Canada. I have no idea what happens anywhere else outside of Toronto, but people from Toronto do tend to look around themselves and then figure that’s what happens all across the entire country. We’re a bit big headed that way.
