  • This is a story about loss. And, as is my custom, a rock.
The trail is sometimes so beaten that there's nothing left, but if you ever get a chance to see Gozo, take it. I love Gozo. Just don't stress too much about seeing the Azure stump.

I remember the first year someone said "look that arch over there is totally famous" and I was like, "oh cool". Today's the first time I remember it. Funny you mentioned the Monalisa ! I visited the Louvre once, as I was walking down the hallways enjoying the amazing number of great paintings done by the greatest masters, I swear to God there was a bunch of tourist walking quickly and were speaking loudly " where's the Monalisa, where's the Monalisa?" they completely ignored all the paintings on both sides of the hallway !!! They didn't stop to look at anything. As I got to the hall that has the Monalisa the entire crowd was cramped next to the painting. Yet I noticed on the opposite side a large wall size amaizing masterpiece that was again completely ignored by the crowd. Now I've heard and seen a lot about why we SHOULD be impressed by this painting, and I'm sure it is impressing. But as I am no professional artist I don't think I fully appreciate what the fuss is all about. But I'm pretty sure the rest of that crowd in the museum doesn't know either.

      Totally on board with that!
What I observed was that virtually none of the people scrummaging to get up close to the _Mona Lisa_ actually looked at it for long - if at all - they all had their backs to it and were taking selfies.
More 'la Joke' than _La Joconde..._
The other stand example f this was at the _Sagrada Famiilia_ in Barcelona - I thought the people were coming in adopting a devotional pose with their hands up by their faces, like praying mantises, then realised they were entering this amazing space and all they were seeing was the tiny amount mediated by their device screens.... sigh!

    6:30 Truer words...
Thank you for a very thoughtful essay about rocks (but not just about rocks). You rock! (yeah, I said it)
It's strange how we as a species develop attachments to the oddest things, and then feel tremendous loss when they're gone.
In the end, it's not about replacing what is lost. It's acknowledging the absence and integrating it into the total life experience.
If you truly care about someone or something, the loss will always be there.
If it becomes overwhelming, it's a problem but I would prefer to care enough to feel the loss than not care at all.

    • @regular-joe
      @regular-joe Před 4 lety +1

"....the loss will always be there." Yes. Thank you for sharing your comment.
You know, people don't prepare you for that, with all their "life goes on" and "it's time to move on" and such. Yes, we move on, but we don't leave behind the true losses. And when the loss sometimes overwhelms us, the hurt reminds us we're human. Thank you for your comment, and Rare Earth for this video.
Edit: right now it hurts so much, I'm not sure I want to be human.

a little triggered by your pronunciation of azure, but otherwise absolutely loved the video. your musings can always be applied to so many different aspects of life, they're quite universal, and i think even if it means something different to everyone who hears your words, the important thing is that they mean something to everyone. i won't go into any personal stories of loss, but i'm sure we all have one. the way you can turn a rock into an existential crisis is quite uncanny. thanks

Idea: a board game called "The Azure Window."
The aim of the game is to convince people that your azure window is THE azure window.
Basically, you take a map of Gozo, and miniature azure window statue thingies. On the first turn, a roll of the dice decides where your statue goes. Once your statue is placed, you read about the location from a booklet (part of the game) and argue from there why you get to win.

My mom's side of the family is from Malta and I'm so glad I got to see the window in 2016. I'd still highly recommend the boat tour that's around there, this video doesn't show just how blue the water is and they take you to some of the small caves on the shoreline that are just as cool.

Also definitely daddy has mommy problems. LMAO! Thank you, what a beautiful earth!

I think they're off the hook. In the 1950s it wouldn't have been a big deal, because it only became an attraction as parts fell away over time. What brought it into the world also destroyed it.

fascinated to see the remnants- how the rock altered the sea scape when it tumbled, or if even any of it is really visible. change is fascinating (or heart breaking if economically reliant, the loss of the window is probably like a car-plant closing in ontario) and a part of life, indeed. plus the 'replacement window' already has signs of impending collapse. big ole cracks. next tourist thing? being there for the collapse...
