Absolutely! And not just both, I also love many Anette's songs!
And another thing. If you are a Nightwish fan, it's still bad manners attack singers from other bands. And ultimately, it's a matter of taste too.

Definitely! One of the positive side effects of the otherwise sad occurrence of having replaced singers, is that there are multiple and varied performances of so many of these amazing songs. Not only with different singers but also instrumental versions of some as well now. I feel lucky to have so much amazing talent to enjoy! I can never get bored with the bounty of being a Nightwish fan! :D

You are correct. I do think both singers are great and I still listen to Tarja. Tarja is great with the band that she is with now and the band is her band. I feel Tarja was correct when she stated that the direction Nightwish was going was no longer her band. Floor has the ability to sing rock and opera and that is the direction Nightwish was looking to go. I feel that Floor is best for Nightwish and Tarja is much better where she is. Both are outstanding singers.

Another incredible thing to note about how this band commands the stage: That orchestral intermezzo may be "the place where not much happens," but consider that you have, at that venue, a crowd estimated at 82,000 totally amped-up metalheads who came to headbang--- who are so totally mesmerized by the atmosphere this song creates that they are quelled into near absolute silence for nearly a minute, content to listen to a pre-recorded backing track of the London Philharmonic Orchestra with the band not even on stage! You could have heard crickets chirping were it not for the orchestra! How else could you get 82,000 people anywhere to all simultaneously fall quiet for the same 60 seconds? Amazing. :)

Juuka grooving on his TAMA double-base set, Emppu driving the rhythm in his signature ESP EV-1, Marko giving us epic base lines in his Warwick Buzzard, Tuomas sharing his genius on his KORGs and Floor leading the crowd like a modern-day 6-foot 1-inch Valkyrie and seducing like a siren. They are all at the top of the talent tree. Each one alone could lead a band into greatness let alone all five of them. One of the best live performances of all time. Not only musically but staging and production is unmatched. By the way, "the bid that not much happens" is done by the London Orchestra and it is a great piece of composition. Both incredible vocalists. Tarja’s performance seems to be more operatic and theatrical. She is classically trained and has a very unique distinction as to the fact that she is able to sing perfectly in three octaves. That is nearly unheard of. Floor is much smoother and her voice is more tone defined for this particular song - which as you mentioned is epic. I reckon Tarja has the natural pipes overall. Raw talent. Floor I believe has a voice perhaps more suited for this particular genre of music. Attitude also plays a role in their respective performances. While Tarja is more subtle, Floor is right there in your face. Strong! Its a toss up but if having to choose my nod goes Floor’s way.

Then tarja left the Band and i heard Nightwish no more. And maybe one year ago when it was very boring at a rainy day at home, i saw the Wacken 2013 conzert on CZcams.
OMG. Nightwish is back. And Nightwish is better than ever before.
Floor is so amazing. Her voice, and how she uses her voice. For me it sounds 1000times better than tarjas.

Hi Jim!! I'm so glad you decided to do both versions of the song! Like you propably noticed, you could not pick a worse song to see Tarja in action, heh😂... I was also like NOOOO!!! when I saw that you have done Tarja version of it becouse, eventough to me Nightwish will more or less always be with Tarja as their singer but with this song especially there is so much more in it with Floor! When Tarja's walking away of stage, Floor just getting started, and delivers her FLOORGASM at the end. That's so great. And there is something in Tarjas live performances that dont work on me that well and I more like the music videos and recordings with her!! Ofcourse there is exceptions also like "Phantom of the opera"!! But it was pretty nice that you got to compare these two singers like this and definitely you should check more Tarja and Anette as well (like song called "Bye bye beautiful") in the future and I think you don't get so strong reaction on comments with any other song when you choose the "wrong" singer!! ("Poet and the pendulum" could have been such a song but you got that right😂). But hey thank you very much! Catch you later!

Jim, if you want to do a good comparison of Tarja and Floor, take a look at both of them covering Phantom of the Opera. Tarja's cover is well known, but Floor has attempted it also, just not with Nightwish, and there are videos of it here on youtube. If you do this you'll see the true contrast between Floor and Tarja's voice and booth of their strengths and weakness. Yes, Floor is a good rock singer and can perhaps belt with the best of them, but when it comes to have a great head voice with plenty of power and range, you'll see the difference in Phantom of the Opera.

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi Před 5 lety

Right, my point: no-one is best in every song. Unlike some rabid fanbois keep saying. I have favorites of all the three singers. If you put Anette sing a song made for Tarja, it's not good for her and gives completely wrong idea of the woman's capability. In this song, Floor's version made for the live DVD, was much more professionally arranged than Tarja's version, where she walks around the stage with the mic. Tarja's studio version is far better than her live version.
So... sure you can compare two live versions. But it just compares the two live versions. I prefer Floor's in thhis case like I said long ago.

Absolutely incredible audio, like nothing I've ever heard before, has to be state of the art shit. Yes technology has improved a lot! But technology doesn't explain Floor, I've been listening to live Rock and Roll since Deep Purples first US tour, I don't have any problems with saying that Floor Jansen is the best female metal vocalist I've ever heard. And, just to throw in on the who's better shit: Tarja is amazing and she's the first ever fully trained operatic voice in R&R. That said, she has that brittle soprano thing going, love her anyway!

Now with Floor singing I can't listen to this song without getting all teared up. It's so good. I can't believe she's from my own little country, I think she's from out of this world. I don't like to compare singers, all singers have their unique sounding.
But I need to say that Floor has wider vocal range and abilities. She has strong singing voice, which she can turn into lyrical and softer tone (that is awesome to hear changes), as well on higher notes she puts so much power and that's why sound gets that needed "aggression"and richness. She can pull of with ease operatic stuff too and that is good for older songs ( OK Tarja operatic voice has more unique and more trained tone). For the end I like that Floor is not trying to force the operatic style on every NW song and plus she is the first female growler on NW.
Forgot to mention, that when Floor sings then I better can understand lyrics.
Tarja use lyrical voice (smooth voice) and operatic voice (which by the way is amazing), but on higher notes she lose the power of the sound (if she use smooth voice) so she usually on higher notes use her operatic voice.
But that is only my opinion.

It would say that the problem is that Nightwish became so popular and at some point it became mainstream. You could even watch Nightwish videos in tv. I think that is why many people just closed their mind to Tarja. However, Floor had a lot of albums with After forever, but that band was more popular within the Metal scene. People who knew After forever also knew bands like epica, haggard, within temptation, midnattsol, sunterra, etc...bands that many of those who knew nightwish were not familiar with.

Yeah, around 2004 nightwish was a global fenomenom, played alongside with the top pop songs of the time in the radio. This brought nightwish a fanbase that is not typical for metal, more "cultish". Back in the Tarja days i was ok with nightwish, i even went to one of their concerts. But the fact in the matter is that Tarja wasnt really that impressive live, she clearly wasnt a metal singer, she often stumbled in the parts where she isnt the center piece in the song and she didnt have the presence to carry the heavier songs. Floor is basically a full update in comparison. Maybe if i was casting an opera i might choose Tarja, but when it comes to metal, Floor is just objectively better, is not even a matter of opinion.

She is still considered by many the best rock/jazz-singer of the three. Just go see some Anette-featuring song and you find Anette-love. Yes but i think she forces her voice at times where when it comes to vocal control on higher notes its almost like Floor is just talking yet has that power. Its fluid and comes easy to her. Its like the female version of David Draiman from disturbed. He has such power in his voice but its almost like he barley moves his mouth. They both have great control over their pitch.

Tarja was the first singer I heard in Nightwish and I loved the unique combination of operatic voice, symphonic sounds and heavy metal it was quite a unique combination. Floor by comparison has a more rock sound but with an amazing vocal range which allows her to adapt very well to the songs originally sung by Tarja.
