  • Most people know that exercise is good for your physical and mental health. But did you know that regular exercise can be just as effective at treating some forms of depression as anti-depressant medications and psychological treatment for depression? Research has shown that regular exercise can have a powerful effect on preventing the development of depression, helping a person come out of depression and preventing future depressive episodes. So the question is, how does regular exercise have this effect on depression?
There are a number of ways in which regular exercise can prevent depression and help a person recover from depression:
    1) Regular exercise can help reduce the impact of stress.
    2) Exercise can increase the amount of energy you have.
    3) Some forms of exercise can have mood-enhancement effects, commonly referred to as the “runner’s high”.
    4) The process of getting exercise forces you to be more active in general.
    5) Exercise is a sign that you are taking steps to feel better and there are things that you can do to feel better.
    6) Regular exercise can make you more efficient in your daily tasks.
    7) Regular exercise can help improve your sleep.
So exercise can be a powerful antidepressant. Some tips for how to start building regular exercise into your life:
    1) Start with small exercise goals and build slowly.
    2) Frequency of exercise ins more important and duration or intensity.
    3) Focus on forms of physical exercise that you might enjoy doing.
    4) Have some variety in the forms of exercise that you are getting.

I have severe anxiety and agoraphobia. I bought a cheap treadmill. I started walking which helps a lot. But now I'm 3 weeks into a Couch to 5k. Sweating is the best way to clean the mind of anxiety. If you have a thought stuck in your head, exercise will burn it off. I have severe OCD and sweating is the best tool I found to get rid of the obsessing.

I had low moods on and off for years and am sober 33 years. I’ve been exercising in the gym for years and can say that exercise definitely staves off my low mood. Not sure if I have full blown depression but I do the gym most days and it’s been a magic pill for me..however severe depression would require professional help ..give exercise a go but don’t give up!!

Exercise is my #1 go-to anti-depressant. The problem is that if I do lapse it can be very hard to take that first step to get back into it. It works though, it really does.

Hi Dr Nader. Just found, and really getting a lot out of your videos. You have a really good presentation style, and manner. Any thoughts on having a chronic illness, CFS, along with the anxiety, depression, anhedonia, etc. exercise helps with depression, but is detrimental to CFS? Thx

Even light cardio, like waking is beneficial. That is where I started. Now, I’m in the gym 5 to 7 days a week doing cardio and resistance. Even some HIIT. It does reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, reduces cortisol (stress hormone) in the blood. Also, if you are in substance abuse recovery like me, it reduces cravings. I would be dead without the gym.

I'm a little over a month into sobriety and recovery And I just went to the gym yesterday for the first time in nearly a year! I know it will help when I hit "the wall" and I just want to feel like my old self again which included the gym like 5 days a week! It felt great, I'm really sore now though, I may have overdone it 😅

Dr. Nader, I am just new to your channel. Your videos are so insightful. Just one thing please. I have been battling depression for almost 5 years now. I've been diagnosed with OCD. I have been exercising, eating healthy, undergoing CBT sessions, yet I still haven't come back to the older version of me: the happier, positive and fulfilled person I used to be. I don't smoke and drink. I feel like I am fighting a big giant called "intrusive/odd/bizarre thoughts". Because of that, I feel extreme irritability and inner discomfort although my lifestyle is 90% healthy. What should I do to overcome all this mental torture?Sending you so much love from Tunisiaتونس الخضراء. Salam ❤

    What can I do if
my current depression, Anhedonia, and out of control ADD are not allowing me to feel the benefits, as I have for many years, no matter what steps I take with exercise these days. I know firsthand that exercise is the #1 medicine and allows my other meds to work better. The overwhelm and apathy that dominates right now is upsetting to me and feels impossible even with forcing myself as much as possible and knowing it can't happen overnight but it can't happen if you don't take action. I know I am capable from prior experience, but not feeling myself with no desire or motivation is debilitating. I am working with a psychiatrist and still trialling augmentations. I still need to look into the distress intolerance video you suggested! Sincerely,
    Daniella

@@DrRamiNader I just watched your Giving up and goal setting criteria videos, thank you. It has reduced my confusion and distress, right now, as I have learned important characteristics of depression and the way they trick you, trap you, and focus on negative and damaging thoughts, in order to maintain it's hold/existence. It was a real eye opener to learn about the relationship between
expectations ( aware of or not) and your current energy and motivation levels needing to match, and comprehending its necessity, in order to make gradual progress and achieve recovery. This new knowledge and specific criteria for realistic goal setting, finally, gives me a starting point I was trying too hard to find. I guess depression being such an internal/invisible illness even makes it hard for the depression sufferers, themselves, to realize
they are, inappropriately, expecting too much too soon.

@@daniellamurphy6511 Reduce negative thoughts to have a good life. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, eyes closed, be still and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly they will reduce and relax the mind. No deep inhalation-exhalation or breath counting needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Be as still as possible as it reduces negative thoughts. Make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

      I struggle too
Not with lack of motivation that comes depression, but work out rebound symptoms..
      I do 1.5 hours 5-6 six days a week
      Cardio, weights, and core
      It’s been 3 years of this happening;
      Amazing 2 hour high..
Then crash…often a migraine attack, but severe headache either way
      Shaking, exhaustion, dizziness vertigo..
      Increase in asthma symptoms..tight lungs..
And an uptick in depressive symptoms…sometimes leading to full blown long lasting episode..
      I eat…I’m hydrated..it’s not that..
      I get fitness…so I keep going
      But not depression results..
I take meds for depression, asthma, migraines…and get iron infusions for pernicious anemia..
      Not sure what’s going on..
The crash is less bad when I’m not at work b/c I’m able to address it and rest..
But at work my hands are tied..

Jesus doesn't bother with depression, though. He seems to like doubling it and adding an extra helping of guilt and self-repression.
