Something you didn't touch on that Sims 3 has WAY over Sims 4 are skills. In TS4 when you skill up all it really does is unlock more things in that skill. In TS3 it unlocked all kinds of cool things like, if you cooked enough dishes, everything you make cooks faster. Or if you made enough sculptures, then your ice sculptures would never melt. Blow up enough stuff and you'd could dig through scrap piles faster. You'd unlock things like book signings at the bookstore with your writing got high enough, playing gigs at the theater with your guitar skill, or planting weird things like meat with a high enough gardening skill. It gave you more reasons to raise your skill than just the boring reason of just raising a skill.

My favorite skill leveling up was athletic. I used to have my sims just run around the neighborhood all day and see how fast I can get to lvl 10! Honestly TS3 was better because of the open neighborhood concept, & I wish TS4 kept the same energy

The world's in Sims 3 are supposed to be a whole package which means you don't need to jump in-between small worlds and loading screens all the time. The towns will age as you play and people will grow up, get married, have children, get new jobs and promotions, and the best part is that you can go around watching people living out their own unique lives and experience the world change and flourish. That sounds like a real life simulation

I loved in the Sims 3 if you cheated on your partner around someone your partner knows or friends with they will tell your partner. So as soon as you come into contact with them or return home your partner will have the cheated on moodlet and you would receive the caught cheating moodlet. Such a small feature but it is so realistic that you couldn't cheat on your partner around family or friends. In the Sims 4 you get a warning from your friends but your partner doesn't find out unless they catch you in the act.

I think the main issue with The Sims 3 performance is it was just a bit ahead of its time. If The Sims 3 was written in 64 bit and was able to utilize more system resources, I don't think it would be as plagued as the vanilla experience is today. To me, The Sims 4 should have been The Sims 3, and 3 should have been 4. That being said, I think 4 following up The Sims 2 would still be criticized, but probably less so. For me, The Sims 4 absolutely gutted all the revolutionary features 3 introduced, and in my mind will always be inferior. Plus it has the issues of "gray happiness". Everything is almost always positive to the point the gameplay is bland.

One of the most unpopular opinions or underrepresented opinions is that Sims 3 gameplay is better the larger your household gets. It's more immersive due to the open world. You don't have to wait between load screens for access to multiple locations and with different sims. I find that the more interactive features added to the Sims 4 the less that you can actually use them. For example if you decide to interactive with your teens in high school you can't use the home decorator career as thoroughly. If you are trying to level up a skill or complete a task at home you can't do that as seamlessly when participating in an interactive career. It's just so annoying. Even if the Sims 4 made the individual neighborhoods open world it would be better.

That's why it was lacking so much when it launched and why it has so many issues because the foundation it was built on was not meant for a single player game of its scale. It also doesn't help that they keep on adding DLC that makes it increasingly more unstable.

With that, the sims 4 actually became pretty laggy with my Samsung no matter how well I would maintenance it. I have the whole collection and actually ended up getting a new laptop just to be able to run sims. So at the end of the day people with lower end laptops will still lose because the sheer number of sims 4 packs at this point probably equates to at least 3/4 of the content that sims 3 has.

Newer PCs actually have more of an issue running sims 3 than old ones because the sims 3 is based on 32 bit architecture while modern PCs/macs use 64, causing massive incompatibility issues due to poor programming on EA's part even though 64 is meant to be backwards compatible. It's not really an issue of maintenance.
64 bit laptops almost always require mods to run the sims 3 properly now.

I never needed mods to run the sims 3 on my Samsung or my newest one - both are 64 bit. Highly doubt that’s coincidence. Create A Style is much more powerful than you let on. You can select parts of a pattern, and replace them with a new pattern. For example, imagine a wall with 6 inch tile squares in a checkerboard, and a 2 foot horizontal strip at the top. You can turn one of the two checkerboard pieces into a small mosaic and the other into a carved wood pattern, then change the colors in each of those sub-patterns to whatever you wanted. Then you could do that again to that strip across the top. And you can do that for EVERY item (or close enough) in the game. For beds, you could do the sheets and the blankets, the headboard and the frame, etc...
Also, you didn't talk about the life stages. Teenagers needed to learn how to drive. They could ask an adult, and they would drive around town, starting very slowly, stopping and starting. After a few sessions, they'd be driving smoothly (level 3 IIRC) and be able to drive on their own. They could also do things like go to prom.
World Adventures (the first expansion) let you vacation in China, France, or Egypt. You do quest type things for the locals to earn reputation to upgrade your visa so you could stay longer. There were tombs to explore, puzzles to solve, skills to learn, and once you maxed your visa you could even buy houses/lots to build a vacation home.
Honestly, the Sims 3 Store isn't as bad as people make it out (IMHO of course). I bought loads of venues, for example. Each is basically a prebuilt lot, but they had special items with lots of gameplay interactions, and you could use all the pieces in your own builds. There's one where you can build a working rollercoaster, there's a renaissance faire with working attractions, a bakery and bistro you can run as a business putting your items up for sale. Yes, if you tried to buy every item in the store it would be exorbitantly expensive, but no one was expected to do that. You watched the deals (which still run to this day) and bought the items you wanted for your style of gameplay..
I still play the Sims 3. The real reason I didn't switch was I had simply put too much money into the Sims 3 to stop playing it and move on. And the Sims 4 at launch was such a lackluster title missing so many basic features. Now, for me to get a Sims 4 game to the point my Sims 3 game is, I'd have to spend at least $500, assuming I got everything on sale.
Also - for anyone wanting to play Sims 3 - you NEED to look at the NRAAS mod suite. It adds so much more to the game, and is entirely modular and customizable, so you can use exactly the features you want, and change them on the fly. There are some great guides on YT here going over pretty much the whole suite (and Story Progression in particular).

Only in Sims 3 do they sit there at the same table silently shovelling food in their mouths. Not in 2 and not in 4. So much from Sims 2 was not implemented in either Sims 3 or Sims 4, btw. One Sim could be in love with another while Sim 2 barely liked that Sim, the genetics were better aaand so on.
Sims 3 also feels more limited if you don't want it to be a modern day simulator exactly BECAUSE of the open world that relies on cars. Now 4 is also annoying because of the phones, but I found mods to get rid of them. I'd imagine that getting rid of the cars to play, say, a medieval world, would be much trickier, especially since your inactive Sims keep acquiring Lemons and Jalopies. Sims 2? You can do anything you want. Just walk to community lot if you don't want cars. No cell phones unless you buy one for your Sim. I'd always go back to it because I could play in so many ways the game was never intended to be played in. Yes, sometimes I'd need mods, but they'd never be as complicated/complex as the Sims 3 mods and also don't need constant updating like the Sims 4 ones.

The personality system in Sims 2, on the other hand, feels very stilted: 10 traits (5 opposing 5) and you can only get bits and pieces of them to make up a whole person? Still 100% better than the empty, soulless sims of Sims 4, though! But I can understand why some people still love Sims 2 and feel that it was the best of the franchise: it incorporated a lot of lore, and there were a lot of sweet or humorous bits (like the cut scenes) that made it very lively. But for what I'm looking for in a life sim, Sims 3 works better. (For the record, I only need three mods to get Sims 3 to function beautifully on my system; of course, I haven't managed to get Sims 4 to happily work on it without lags and freezes with any mods, so I just gave up on that! Most games improve as time goes on but The Sims has honestly gone from great to somewhat mid. There are some things that I prefer in Sims 4 but mostly the features just aren't there... and the ones that are there are hidden behind a paywall. I also feel like they hold back content in their packs so that they can release it later and try to milk more money out of everyone.

I love this comparison breakdown! I think most of the lag is a result of having some of the more dysfunctional expansions like Island Paradise on. Pets also slows things waaaay down. My $300 laptop runs 5 expansions smoothly without lag, it's very annoying to have to exclude content just to make the game performance correct! I have both and I still prefer TS3, probably nostalgia has something to do with it!

The Sims 3 is laggy not because it's way too ambitious (even for the time back when it was released) but rather because the game much like The Sims 4 is poorly coded and it frustrates me that the developers don't give the slightest **** to come back and release performance improvement updates. As a Software Engineer, I know for sure that The Sims 3 could run flawlessly as it is and even more ambitious on low-end computers and it's just sad to see Maxis not caring about playability/quality and I feel it shows that they just don't really care about the game overall anymore.

One thing the sims 3 has MASSIVELY over the sims 4 as others have said, is the kookiness. It has wild random interactions, the incredibly small details such as different traits influencing the types of paintings a sim will make, neat sims being able to clean the whole house in one go or freaking out over dirty dishes, sims being happy about eating their favourite foods, having a wealth of different options available for social connections and some being available to different traits instead of hidden behind paywalls (2 ambitious sims being able to discuss work, rebellious sims influencing others to join protests, evil sims lying to other sims or getting positive moodlets from upsetting others, kleptos stealing random shit from your house, BRAVE SIMS FIGHTING BURGLARS INSTEAD OF CALLING THE POLICE, etc) meant there was a reason to play with so many different traits and personalities. The fact that people discover more quirks even today because of the SHEER AMOUNT of content available is just amazing. If you take out the fact that the game was too ambitious for its time, the sims 3 is far far superior. I can zoom into the plaza and see two townies flirting or kids having a snowball fight, or a fist fight going on outside the bistro because a townie had an affair, people protesting llamas outside the town hall, honestly amazing, hence why so many people still play today

It's kinda because the sims 3 graphics are less defined than sims 4 so it all just kinda blurs into the same face. Additionally, you mentioned unrealistic body expectations, but sims 4 can actually get you more realistic bodies than sims 3. Sure, you can make unrealistic ones just as much as you can make realistic ones. I'll give it to sims 3 that sims can be bigger.

It indeed has good and bad sides. In Sims 2 only the active household ages, so quite quickly it turned very weird when you sim grows old and their classmates are still teens. Tho if you liked to play families separated form the world, it truly was good to swap between homes and return to play them whenever, whereas in Sims 3 all townies age around you which is much more realistic but also if you leave a family and switch to another, the first sims might die out in the meantime unless they are in different city-saves. Tho you can always copy the families in world mode before switching households and place them back to the city later if you feel like continuing playing with them.

Everyone complaining about the look of the Sims 3 game tells me Sims 4 has conditioned alot of people to focus more on LOOK and ASTHETICS of the game than actual gameplay. Everyone has their pretty Sims 4 game but there's shallow gameplay and it becomes boring very quickly. And Sims 4 lag is just as bad as the Sims 3, there's people who can't even play their game now due to the bugs, lag and glitches. And as far as the Sims 3 store, at least these items added gameplay, the Sims 4 kits adds no gameplay and the only kit that attempted to be a gameplay kit broke and still hasn't been fixed.
Unlike many people, I can excuse the look of the Sims and the graphics but I can't excuse gameplay for a game that is supposed to be a LIFE SIMULATION game, I need actual gameplay, not just mainly to build, otherwise I would have stuck with SimCity and all the other Tycoon games they use to sell. For people to mainly mention the open world, tells me you didn't play the Sims 3 because Sims 3 had way more to offer than open worlds and watching cars drive around the town (which was nice). Sims 3 had better baby interactions, had better worlds like Bridgeport, Roaring Heights, and Sunlit Tides that were all vastly different and unique just to name a few. They had a fun hotels and resorts system where as the owner you received reviews from customers, more interactions with pets and animals, the festivals were more lively, drivable houseboats, better mermaids, real deep sea diving, fairies. The concept of Into the Future was literally Back to the Future 2 which was cool and a chance to live in a futuristic world and visit and meet your family in the future. That's just some of the cool features and indepth gameplay of the Sims 3. It's a way better game than Sims 4. To me, of course the best game of out of the whole franchise is the Sims 2. Side note, I think Sims 1 STILL has the best vacation pack out of all the Sims 4 games.

I had the opposite issue. Almost from release day there were crazy issues with TS4, and I didn't use mods or CC. I remember the skill bar getting stuck forever even when you weren't working on a skill, tasks getting stuck in your task queue and never being able to remove them, emotions flipping when there was nothing to cause it (like being flirty where there was absolutely no flirty items or other sims nearby), game crashing, placed items disappearing, horrendous issues with build mode (like the entire roof breaking if you tried to make a loft area).
On the other hand, I played TS3 on an old Toshiba laptop that was also running netflix through an HDMI to the tv and rarely ever had any issues. I remember the fire station was broken, though. There was one glitch I abused the hell out of. The longer you played, when you slept, eventually your happiness meter would just get stuck on full, so even if you only had negative moodlets it would still be pumping out the reward points. Once you saved and came back in it reset, though.
