A preference means to prefer something over the other. For example, I prefer apples over oranges. That does not mean I don’t like oranges. It just means I like apples more than oranges. Putting down your OWN RACE of women in order to uplift other races of women is NOT a preference. It’s called SELF HATE ! Period !

I'm a fairly dark skinned South Asian-American woman married to a white man. I've dated within my own ethnicity and out, and just ended up with the man I really fell in love with. What really bothers me is that I have never had a white guy ask me why I married a white man. I have, on multiple occasions, had guys of my own ethnicity and African-American guys who mistook me for African-American ask me why I couldn't find a man of my "own kind" (I kid u not! Those exact words). Why do dark men think we should only be with them, while plenty of dark guys, especially from where I come from look for girls with "fair skin". Is that some kind of an insecurity? I appreciate Jackie talking about this subject and especially about looking at a person's qualities vs what they look like on the outside. Skin is literally only skin deep, it doesn't define a person. Choose a partner for who they are, not for their skin color or hair or whatever.

So no dont blame white europeans for that.

      @ellieameli Před 4 lety +90

Women of color have been programmed to believe that we must be loyal to our counterparts (men of color.) It’s not just darker skinned women either since Tamera Mowry & Doja Cat have both been shamed for dating/being married to white men and both of these women are fair skinned and biracial. Society has been teaching women of color for the longest to “hold our men down.”

I’ve seen and know what it feels like to see men of your own kind running around and talking down on you and it’s annoying asf. I had a Hispanic men tell me to my face that he wouldn’t date a latina cause we too crazy and that’s why white gurls are better because they don’t talk back. They encourage these white girls to look like us and then drag us with those same women who hate us I’ve known so many white women who hate Hispanic women but date Hispanic men.

I have a friend who's white. Her guy friend's family mentioned that he & my friend should date. The guy friend is Haitian and is dark-skinned. She was talking about the possibility of dating him & she said to me, 'if I had interracial kids, I'd want them to be your complexion, your complexion is so pretty." I'm light-skinned (think Sanaa Lathan). I had to explain how it was kind of ignorant to hope that her child would come out a particular shade of brown because brown people come in so many shades & you never know what you will have a very fair-skinned parent & a very dark-skinned parent. If she did have an interracial child & that child was darker than she'd wanted, that child would feel resented. She really didn't understand how that comment came off as ignorant/demeaning until I mentioned how rampant colorism is with the black community & how some white women fetishize mixed children.

I think dating preferences are conditioned in ethnic communities- I CANNOT and AM NOT speaking for the Black Community because I am not. I come from a Greek-Egyptian background and I grew up being told I don’t look Greek enough and I was too “Arab” for Greeks and too “European” for Egyptian. Because there is a certain “Type” Eastern men are conditioned to look for and when you get butt hurt they response is “It’s just my preference.” If your preference is clouded by prejudice for another ethnicity that’s not Ok. Because in certain cultures there is an expected “look/background/upbringing ext”. But there okay with sleeping with you because your “exotic”. And then they get butt hurt when you write them off bc their all being ***holes. I appreciate you spoke on behalf of the black community and bringing light to this issue bc I have a very good African American friend and she is consistently discouraged by this and gets angry when she sees black men dating 5’1 blonde little WASPs. I’m a dark skinned Indian from South Africa and I’m married to a White man. No white guys question my husband why he married me but the white women did and even told him he should stick to his race. Myself on the other hand did have questions from both men and women why I’m with a white man and how I got one . The problem with dating my own race is that there is a lot of colorism within the Indian community. Darker skinned women are seen as unattractive and light skin is seen as beautiful. It’s a sad standard and a lot of my own people couldn’t believe a white man could love someone as dark as me. I have dated Indian guys in my past and the two that I dated both had issues with my complexion, one guy’s mum was complaining that they are talking about me being dark as tho it was a horrible characteristic. Another Indian guy I dated use to emotionally abuse me by insulting me about my color and saying I’m the darkest his ever date. Like I don’t understand the hate men have for women of their own race. All skin tones are beautiful it’s just that they can’t accept it

So I am to light skin for black and latinas and to Hispanic for Asians and whites. And it sucks because I think of myself as ugly and unattractive to most women. Colorism is true but so is judging others based on the way they talk and carry themselves. It hurts because I am me and I am being myself. But that is never enough for the business world and dating world.

There's sooo many parallels among Hispanics/Latinos when comparing the colorist BS that black men throw around. Some of the mess I've heard growing up, like I and my sisters need to "date lighter skinned/white" to "mejorar la raza" ("better the race"), that dating black men/women would "stain" us as a family and race...🙄🙄🙄🙄 Now fast forward a few years, as far as who I date, I love black men (as well as women!) and pay no mind to the colorist bullshit I was raised with. As you've stated far more eloquently than I, most of these "preferences" are total BS. Thank you for speaking so truthfully on this often uncomfortable topic...sometimes I think it's for this reason you don't receive the props you deserve!! ❤

As a black man, I see this type of behavior perpetuated more often than not, and it saddens me to my core! Black women are SO beautiful and deserving of ALL the love from their counterparts, i.e., black men! And as a gay black man, I can’t say that things are much better on our side, as we’re oftentimes passed over by other gay black men because of their “preferences”, which oftentimes is for non-black men. It saddens me so, especially since my preference is for black men (not to say that I don’t or won’t date interracially). But as a gay black man from the south, I want/yearn for someone who empathizes (never sympathizes) and TRULY understands my day-to-day life.

Why do you only desire my black features when they’ve been diluted or adjusted to your European standards? That your black man eyes have been groomed to desire and symbolize as safety and success. Why? Why don’t black men who don’t like black women / darker skin black women unpack their unconscious colorism? Darker women DO NOT get the credit, recognition or opportunities they deserve from ANYONE. Not black men, not employers, not society no one! So to see black men so against darker women it is beyond me. Every time I see a black woman or a darker skin woman I make sure to compliment her, it’s the least I can do and it’s always a genuine compliment. Bc the world will never give her 100% what she deserves. And just to clarify, yes I do identify as black and as a black woman, however I realize that bc of the complexion of my skin I get a pass and I walk with privilege. I may have occasional struggles but none that will ever compare to a woman with darker skin. I recognize that the life and treatment of a woman with dark skin should never be minimized or used to validate someone else’s struggle.

I just think it’s weird that a lot of attention is paid to blk women and how they feel about themselves not the reality of their beauty but their own perception of their beauty. Because if a person who knows who beautiful you are can get you to not see it than they feel like you don’t see their jealousy or insecurities that they have. Just to let you know a lot of white women wish they were blk. So if enough blk women feel ugly or unattractive than ppl will never see their jealously.

Conversely, if you're offered apple juice & prune juice, and you HATE prune juice, there is no "preference" because you hate prune juice. Apple juice is now a prerequisite, period. That's pretty much how I see colorist men. You don't like dark skinned women, so stop fronting like they are even an option.

I’m so glad you’re speaking up! I am Bosnian/Cuban and my husband is black and never once has he said he only dates white women or wouldn’t/hasn’t dated black women. I’ve dated men who thought this way and they definitely were a straight up joke. I feel if a black man says that they would never date a black woman or speaks negatively about black woman makes me think “how do you feel about your mom? Or your sister?” I never supported it I never will and I’m very glad that my husband wasn’t close minded and stupid. Also I love you Jackie 🥺🥰

I am black and my husband is Italian. I would look ar him side ways if he said something foul about Italian women.
Black men are the only racial group that are known for this sick mentality. When a man hates the image of the woman that produces him you know he clearly has a self worth issue. There is no possible way he can be a confident man.
It is good you recognize that sickness in some black men. He is not interested in you as a person, just your skin tone. That type of black male is a LOSER.

@@kanida6836 Sadly popular amongst Asians as well. A lot of Asian women dont want to date Asian men or Indian men and women try to date light skinned Indians or Whites.

Seherzada Sales George I’m so glad you realize the ignorance that goes around in some of these relationships. I was married to an Indian man and he never said any thing bad about is women if he ever did I wouldn’t married him. And we had a daughter. I always wondered when black men men degrade black women to the other race and have a baby by the other woman.. he is still having a baby baby!! So how is he going to raise the baby especially if he a girl... growing up to what he hate the most a black woman

Has anyone ever had a female friend who was a colorist? I fell out with a girl over this earlier this summer. I feel like that should start to be a topic of discussion. Cutting off those “light skin” friends who consistently throw jabs and make ignorant comments in your face. Self love is about staying away from toxic people. I feel so much better since we fell out.

So I have a couple friends who are white and only dates dark skinned black men. I don’t know if that falls in the same category, I just feel like they’re missing out on good men from other racial types because they won’t accept them in their lives at all.

Colorist women are some of the worst colorists that you would ever meet, black women who are colorist are some of the worst there are tbh. I guarantee you know someone close to you probably more than a few who are either a closeted or an open colorist.

I had an asian girl that had every one of her 5 kids by 3 different black men(yes that was shade) tell me "i only like light skin men cause i dont want my kids dark" that was the last time i talked to her. You will not sit in my face and disrespect the people that looj like me in my face and think its okay. And she is now on baby daddy number 3 doing nothing in life. How is that working for you😂😂😂

The misogynoir is real. Words can't express how unsurprising it is that Chris Brown is an eager participant in that very particular brand of hate and ignorance we see directed towards black women. His clownery knows no bounds.

Late comment: the amount of empathy, grace, and truth you embody in all your videos is a blessing. It's so obvious that whatever you do is so intentional and filled with love. Your palette (bought immediately and obsessed) and your wisdom are literal gifts!
