I'm Asian, and i'm light skinned. Some of my classmates in school always asks me "Ugh, i want to be light skinned like you, how do you stay pale/light , and don't tan?" and i always reply with "just don't go out enough, so that's why i don't tan." And after watching this now i regret saying that instead of encouraging them to embrace their skin cause they still look beautiful no matter what skin color they have. Definitely not gonna repeat that again.

I'm light skinned too but I experience the exact opposite thing with my friends at school - "Why are you so light?Your skin looks like snow lol". I don't really mind it but it's funny to think about how different cultures are. I come from a sunny European country so I guess it's normal to be a little more on the tanned side. But if you look a bit too tanned for the standard they poke fun at you, thankfully not constantly, but you're probably going to hear people make comments about your skin.

i'm a light asian too and ngl, i always wanted to be darker
mostly because sometimes i feel like asian isn't cute (it honestly is, but i just put myself down for things i shouldn't)
i live with my "dad" who's black...not really my dad but he and my mom were together when i was born
my mom is asian and mostly isn't able to care for me and my 2 other brothers she actually had with my dad
maybe i want to be darker so people don't call me white or ask if i'm adopted 😞

As a south asian woman, skin bleaching has been pushed on my since I was a kid. All the way when I was NINE, and I didn’t understand what colourism was, my mom would make me use Fair and Lovely (prominent skin bleaching product for south asians). She always discouraged me from playing outside in the sub. And my dad said things like “yellow and white clothes don’t look good on darker skin like yours”. I had to get educated to understand just how brainwashed our colonizers made us, by making us hate the colour of our own skin.

Same. I genuinely felt like my skin was "ugly" because it was darker than your typical white girl. I also used Fair and Lovely when I was a kid. hey guys, first of all thank you for watching this video. something that I want EVERYONE to take away from this is that this isn’t about just ”loving yourself”, that’s a very easy thing to say when you aren’t in the other person’s shoes. We don’t know what people go through daily and or hear daily to see themselves as less than. Instead of ONLY pointing the finger at the person, let’s continue to challenge our traditional media, our entertainment industry, the people on social media who perpetuate negative images of being dark. Let’s challenge people who continuously use their platforms to degrade being dark while uplifting those that are light/mixed. A lot of people TRULY are in this fight alone, and don’t have people in their corner telling them they are beautiful which is why they subject themselves to this. Everyone needs a bit of positive reinforcement at times. Even me! Obviously there are people out there who truly just hate themselves and there are different unique cases, but I just thought I would reiterate this.

And as a person that is so vocal about dark skin in international beauty (I use a lot of Asian products in particular so I hear a lot from those with darker skin in Asia) I was so offended. I'm from Zambia and a couple of months ago I encountered a billboard-type advert in town for a product called 'So White!' With the tag line: 'So young, so pretty, so white!' Featuring a black woman smouldering into camera. My jaw practically hit the floor. I couldn't believe such advertising is still legal in Africa post the Rhodesian era! Keep on keeping on, Jackie A, love your work!

I SEE A LOT OF COMMENTS SIMPLIFYING THIS AS A “BEAUTY STANDARD” or equally harmful as a lighter skinned person being asked to tan ...It’s not equal , darker skinned people being told to be lighter is a direct result of Colonialism by Europeans. The creation of race was always meant to benefit those considered white . Not only does race effects economics but also every other part of human society including what is deemed beauty AKA your social currency.
Lighter skinned individuals feeling pushed to tan is not ok but it doesn’t effect their life the same way say a Black Latino , Black African or African American, or dark and black Asians.

I'm half Asian, and growing up I've always looked up to and followed Asian celebrities, mainly Chinese and Korean celebrities and I would be so jealous of how pale their skin was. I strived to be so pale that I looked like I died yesterday. It didn't help that my mom and Asian relatives would always nag about me not using sunscreen and an umbrella to block out the sun because "if you're dark-skinned, people will think you're a poor slave/farmer with no education." So as I grew up I became increasingly paranoid about tanning and even considered skin bleaching to lighten my skin tone even though I'm already fairly pale. My dad didn't give two shits about my skin tone. He would tell me I was beautiful either way but I never believed him. It's damaging to tell people that they should change their skin tone to "fit" a beauty narrative and I'm still tryna get over those thoughts and tryna love the colour of my skin

    • @Annika9517
      @Annika9517 Před 5 lety +8

@@misstricksandtipps yeah fake tan is safer than bleaching. But really people don't use fake tan. They burn their skin. Which will bring them skin cancer in the long term. (When I go swimming I see so many people now that the sun is out, so unhealthy. tanned yes, but only by burning their skin to a crisp every single year the last 50 years.) Litterally more than half of the sun cream products at the drug store are tanning or bronzing. People who should stay out of the midday sun are using SPF4 bronzing cream and burn in the sun all day, then use bronzing after Sun, then buy shower gel that claims to not wash the tan away. In the time in which i decided which SPF 50+ to buy i saw 3 people buy "bronzing" shower gel and low SPF tanning sun cream.
It's the same sick mentality. I am really light skinned and have freckles. I litterally don't tan, only burn. And people tell me to go out in the sun to get a little tanned cause they think it's more beautiful.
(Thankfully the times of when freckles were mandated to be bleached away by people are over)
And I myself used skin lightening products before. It's ridiculous. When I studied abroad in Thailand it was litterally impossible to avoid, esp. Because i can't read Thai. It's in nearly every sun cream. In face cream in Soap. And so many Thai friends on facebook promoting these products.
It's sad honestly. No one is made happy with what they have.
The exactly same companies that want to sell me Tanning products in Europe, sell whitening products in Asia (and probably in other parts of the world too). And that is what is wrong with the world. Everyone is made to feel somehow inadequate by others and by companies that want to sell a solution to a problem that only exists in our heads.

I think one of the reason why asian prefer lighter skin is because getting darker, most of the time means you get additional wrinkles or freckles on your skin since not all asians are born with natural deep skin tone. But anyway that’s another type of evidence that culture needs to be changed and each and every one of us should embrace ourselves for who we are.
As a fellow asian I grew up being told light skin is beautiful most of the time by the media. I also was obsessed with having my light skin as long as possible, but I now much want to have dark skin after I got interested in american tv program and music industry that are driven by black people. When I worked at Sephora, there would be so many white women that came up to me saying my skin color was gorgeous and that they wished they had darker skin like me, that’s why they tanned. I would tell them “what if I told you your skin tone is more beautiful than mine, that’s why I want to bleach my skin.” They would get real quiet... I say this to say that we really shouldn’t let these “false beauty standards” dictate our perceptions. Whether you are as light snow or as dark as dark chocolate you are beautiful and fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14)

Honestly, black girls have tought me to love my dark skin. I live in the Netherlands (white country), my ancestors came from India (what makes me Asian). My mom is extremely light skinned so everybody always tells me how beautiful my mom is, but they never say anything about me lol. I rarely see darker skinned Asian women, even here in Holland all the Asian girls they show on tv and in music videos are light skinned, and they definitely don’t uplift darker skinned girls like me (not a lot at least). So I’m so grateful that I get to see all these black women who keep uplifting each other and other darker skinned females. I know I’m not black and I don’t want to disrespect anyone, but I feel more ‘at home’ when I look at black women like Jackie or when I see Instagram accounts with black women, cause they’re more relatable to me. ❤️ So thank you so much Jackie!

The Mexican culture really praises light skin girls- you see it all over TV shows, novelas, and even Miss Universe contestants. My nickname in my home is Canelita (Cinnamon) my mom and sister are really light skin compared to me. I am 21 and I am barely learning to love my brown skin. I still don't see brown skinned Mexican-American gals on CZcams nor Instagram- Jenny 69 or Daisy Marquez are Hispanic but light skinned. That's why I follow black girls- y'all really taught me to love my skin I know it sounds weird but there's barely any brown skinned Influencers. Jackie,
I came from one of those homes where hearing "You are beautiful, " was rare and didn't mean much. Where television shows and commercials showed me or influenced me what beauty was...I use to HATE my skin color and my natural hair. I would always ask why me God, why me....
When I met my partner, he introduced me to what it meant to be Black. We would watch documentaries and he really opened my eyes.
I was 22 years old...so prior to that I hated what GOD gave me. I always felt guys would and DID overlook me because I am dark skinned and I didnt have the "exotic" looks.
Blac Chyna endorsing bleaching and K. Michelle and others using whitening DISGUSTS me!
I constantly tell my children how beautiful their skin is and how lucky they are to have melanin.
In my son's school kids will try to insult him and put him down because of his dark beautiful skin. I tell him the joke is on them GOD blessed you with beautiful dark skin. You have people who ran and burn their skin just to try and achieve your beauty, so dont ever be ashamed of your beautiful dark skin.

I'm actually glad I watched this (and read the comments) because I had no idea this was so big everywhere. I remember seeing a documentary on the subject but it was talking about how prominent this is in Jamaica. I was shocked to hear some of the reasons given for bleaching as well as what some of the folks who promoted it had to say but mostly I couldn't wrap my head around the whole thing. It's painful, it's not permanent (so it has to be repeated to keep up) and I just don't get it. I honestly just teared up typing this because it's extremely sad and actually scary to think that we're still having these issues around the world today. I knew there were problems and found out they were deeper than I ever thought while raising my son (I'm white his father is black) but knowing that we still have ignorant folks out here still trying to convince the world that the amount of melanin in our skin makes someone less or more worthy than another makes me so sick . I hope people keep speaking up on these matters and I'll try to do better myself as well. For now all I can say is love yourself as you are and if you made it this far into my sobby rant, you're the real MVP 🤗
