I have a dumb question. If consciousness is confined to man alone, was there no consciousness before the arrival of man . Man has been around for 300000 years...but the universe has existed for around 14 billion years
This is about inquiry and that was not a dumb question at all. In fact, it is rather appropriate and relevant. If you take a radical subjective empirical approach to this then in what "time" is your awareness? You may find for yourself that it is always present and also that that awareness that you are is what knows the consciousness. In this case, you would need to flip the script or shift your point of view prior to answering the question regarding consciousness and the past. The same would apply to matter vs. consciousness concerning what is the primal substance of the Universe. From that precise point of your own, immediate knowing, what is the past that you conceptualize and where is it right now? Who has made the observations and connections between now and that past and used that to determine the time frame you speak of? From when and where and by who is this story known? When a boat moves through the water it leaves a wake, but the wake that seems to be left behind does not create the boat nor does it move it forward. There appears to be a long, linear sequence of events that have come prior to our current experience and we can investigate that and determine or assume data about it, but that is only known by us now and what is it without the knowing? You can use many analogies concerning this point, but I thought I would throw out some inquiry fuel. Do continue to investigate that as it is important on the conceptual level.
All life has consciousness. But the the questions still stands, and the answers is yes in its potential unmanifested states. Did your body “exist” before it manifested? Yes, in its unmanifested potential state.
Even a rock or a grain of sand is consciousness. It it made out of the same elementary particles (atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons) that your body is made of but it’s just in a different composition or arrangement which makes it look different to the human eye. The quantum world is driven by consciousness.
It is a relevant and natural question. There is Nothing but the Self, to which we have given a name “ParaBrahmam”. No Time, no Space, no Matter, - no Forms, no Names. No Roopa, No Naama. All these are the creations of the Mind. Whose Mind? The Mind/Manas of the ParaBrahmam. That State of the ParaBrahmam to which we have given the name “ ParaaShakthi”. We, the atom, mountain, stars, humans, Star-war creatures, Covid virus, are all nothing but the creation of the Mind/Manas of the ParaBrahmam. This Mind/Manas, the awakened, conscious state of the Brahmam, is that Consciousness. So Consciousness has always been, will always be, till the Brahmam goes into its periods of Quiet, Stillness, when Its Consciousness is withdrawn and goes into Stillness and Rest. (Till the next time it awakens?) So Consciousness is not confined to humans only. IT IS EVERYTHING THAT IS MANIFESTED. Consciousness is Not a ‘quality’ of this Creation. IT IS THIS CREATION ITSELF. So when a human thinks that this or that applies to him/herself, he/she is the separatist “Ahamkaara”, Ego, working overtime. And what is this Ego, Ahamkaara, how did it come into being? This Ahamkaara too is the ParaBrahmam, for That is the Only thing that Is. Why is it playing all these pleasant and unpleasant games with Itself? Because It desires it? Who knows? Maybe It Itself knows - or knows not?!
