A 21mm f1.5 for Leica M as well as all mirrorless cameras via adapter. For just above $400 dollars.. is it too good to be true, or is it something quite special? I will also review their 35mm f1.4 so make sure to subscribe for that.

I got pretty worried when you said you would upload a lot less this year Mattias, glad you still upload at a regular enough frequency. Great review/shots as always!
I miss my brethren uploading fuji related content. But I do still appreciate the detail, care, and professionalism that you put into each and every review. Keep it up and thank you.
The tree! Wow! Great video Mattias
Good to hear how you don’t need an external viewfinder on the M8 and use internal frame lines. Just found a cheap Voigtlander 21 f4 and was wondering if internal frame lines would be good enough to estimate
I love the 21mm on my X-E3. I find the crop FOV of 31.5mm very useful. I'm very interested in this lens. I had the Kamlan 21mm which I found to be a very well made lens that produced great images. I returned it only due to the aperture ring. It is de-clicked, which alone I could get used to, but the numbers on the ring were printed in a manner that did not allow me to be able to tell what aperture I was really using.
One of the best voices on CZcams
Man that shot at the start of the video from the Epson is stunning, what a photo.
Thanks :)
What app do you use to calculate what is on focus? I just liked the way the app looked. 2:20
Mattias any chance you might put together a video on adjusting/calibrating the TTArtisan or 7 Artisan lenses?
I'm excited for the 50 .95. That should be a really fun lens!
It looks to be cool :)
AKA "The Noctilux Killer." :-)
I really like your reviews and channel boss you are one of my inspiration here in youtube
Happy to hear!
Currently I'm using a Voigtlander 21mm f4 color-skopar lens that does produce beautiful B&W images, but if used for color images the left and right edges have a purple/pink hue cast from 0.5 to 1.0 inch's in on my 27" monitor when processing in lightroom. I have been able to remove most of this, but some always hangs about.
Does this 21mm 1.5 cause this same effect? Or is it just this little Voigtlander... Drives me crazy. Nice review as always...
This is probably my next lens for the Nikon Zf. Which by the way, that should be your next review body. Keep the great work coming.
Awesome as always!
Glad you liked it :)
I think i may look out for this lens
2:25 Someone might already asked to you. But could you please tell me again, what's this App?
I believe it's Hyperfocal Pro
How much of the viewfinder is blocked on the M8? I'm trying to decide between this lens and the voigtlander f/4.
So, is this a Sonnar design lens like the 7Artisans?
Hey! Would appreciate a revue/comparative with the voigtlander's 21mm nokton... (If not already done?) Cheers!
I want to get one for my Leica M6, but do they make a 21mm external viewfinder?
Trying to decide between this and the voigtländer 21 f4. This looks super nice, but voigtländer is so small in comparison!
I wonder how well this would work for astrophotography, given the extreme aperture but being quite affordable. Almost the same way that Rokinon lenses got into the modern consciousness: affordable, good enough quality, and very practical.
Do you have any feed on astrophotography after 3 years?
Great video Mattias, as usual! Nice lens--of course such cheaper lenses make sense. I have a Zeiss 21/2.8 but even then this makes sense for the extra 1.5 stops.
BTW your videos are responsible for about 40% of my camera purchases last year!
That's how I feel about them as well. My 50mm Summicron is my go-to but the 50/1.1 stands in when I need the aperture.
Hi Mattias. What do you think about using this or the 35 f1.4 on a fuji system with an adaptor?
There are similar options for APS-C. This makes more sense if there is a full frame in your future.
I am thinking of buying the Leica Super-Elmar-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH. This lens may make sense as a purchase to see how I can get on with the 21 mm focal length on my M10 before taking a rather expensive plunge in to the Leica pool.
That's kinda what I thought and now I might go even wider. So I'm glad I got to try this first.
mattias, nice video as always with very interesting fotos but in the last time you review focal lengths that are not the most commonly used. Which affordable 35 or 50mm would you suggest for leica m mount ? and by the way do you prefer 35 or 50mm ?
There are many 35mm in different budgets from 7artisan, TTartisan, Voigtlander, Zeiss or even Leica if you buy used.
My preferred focal length is 28mm or 50mm.
Amazing lens. This is my next purchase
I bought 35mm film rangefinder cameras in the early 2000’s. It’s sad that they have not been very popular in the digital age.
How is the coma on this lens? Any good for astro?
Looks like a nice lens to use 👍 , At a very reasonable price.
For the money there are fine, my only criticism to the lens is the weight and size. Therefore I prefer the Voigtländer 21/4 . Size was the reason to switch to the Leica M system. However I always like your videos and content. Keep up the great work!
That usually us the penalty for more light. But it's still pretty darn small compared to modern mirrorless lenses.
Interesting, will compare it with my tamron 20 mm 2.8 and see which one to keep
Which one did you decide on?
we are still waiting for a review f leica m-d 😉
How to you realise that your rangefinder is out of alignment. especially if you use film rangefinder like my canon canonet 28?
The vertical is visible in the viewfinder and if it's off horizontally your pictures aren't in focus.
Hello, may I ask what app you use for hyperfocal distance?
Thanks
Hyper focal pro.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I was just going to ask the same question. That app looked very user friendly and there are so many of them on the market.
Does anyone know what's the DOF calculator app used in the video? e.g. 2:24 Thanks in advance!
how to know when need adjustment? do you give it in to local Leica store?
When the pictures are no longer in focus.
Interesting lens.
Please do a review of 35mm TTartisan for Leica mount
I have already started. Check my Instagram for samples.
Really strange focal distance. I wonder if lenses are made in the standard focal lengths (including the oddballs 40, 85 and 135) because otherwise they'd be "too different" for the average person to feel comfortable with.
Then again, real focal lengths and f numbers aren't always exactly the same as the advertised ones; but in that case I understand and agree, it's better to advertise "70-200" than "69,7-199,1"
That might be but 21mm is not that uncommon.
focus calculator app @2:35?
When is going to be out the review for the 35mm f1.4?
A couple of weeks probably.
Mattias Burling any early opinion?
Only used it for a few hours so a bit too early.
Interesting lens !
Can you give info on the hood replacement u did?
It's included in the box.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Both squared and round?
Yes.
When did you get another M8 Mattias? If you have two, maybe I should get a silver one as well :) lol This lens looks nice btw.
I only have the silver M8 but I bought it while my MD was in for calibration. Plan on selling it again.. I just seem to be able to do it.
Okay, i thought you had a black one as well.
I have been a photographer for fifty years. I have a lot of lenses. I just ordered this lens and the 50mm f1.4 for my new Lumix S1R. Here is my opinion on lenses. I have some extremely expensive and valuable lenses. I also love affordable excellent lenses like the Voigtlanders. When I saw TT Artisans' Christmas special I said, what the hell, lets have fun. When an artist paints, it doesn't matter how much the brush costs. It's the factor of what the brush presents to the artwork and the artist's hand. Every lens has a fingerprint. Buying the TT Artisan 21mm for just over $200. USD and the 50mm f1.4 for under $200. is laughable, especially if my images are gallery quality and I tell people I shot them with a $200. lens.
new logo is cute
Great video as always Mattias! - Quick question, would this be a suitable alternative for the Fuji 23mm f1.4?
Depends on how you like to shoot. The Fuji is most likely sharper and has AF. This is cheaper and smaller.
Mattias Burling thanks - I guess it’s down to whether I want to limit myself to no AF... I think I just want to shoot a lens with a focus tab at some point 😂
the next leica lens Im going to buy
Magnetic lens cap could have been nice?
That's a good idea. They could sell magnetic filters for it as well. I've been using magnetic filter adapters for 6-7 years, would love to have it integrated in the lens hoods.
Full frame?
Yes.
Where is the review for the Rd-1s? 😉

What app did you use to get the focus distance?
Hyper focal pro.
What are you doing with your cameras? I own M4-2 since 2015 (went with me to USA, Russia) and the only time RF needed adjustment is after dropping camera on the side walk. M-E is with me since 2016 and only one RF adjustment is needed after mounting wrongly re-assembled lens.
Ok, so I should ask what you are doing with your cameras since yours seem to need more adjustments than mine :)
Must be something different indeed. I think it’s because I’m taking cat’s pictures.
Mattias, the Xpro 3 has been missing from your channel lately :)
Did you sell it as well to get your dream camera or are you too mesmerized with the leicas to post some fuji content? :D
I sold the X-Pro3 before deciding to go with the dream camera. I had both the X-Pro3 and the CL and the CL won that battle.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Fair enough. I still enjoy your content just as much, especially the pictures on Instagram ;)
Although I think I have caught the brand-loyalty bug for Fuji which is never good. Might try shooting film for fun for a change :D
Also does this lens has an adapter for fuji?
Yes it does.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Your 50mm 7 artisans is for your leica only?
They are all Leica mount.
The phrase "If you're on a tight budget with a leica" made me snort. :)
Yeah people often forget that Leica can be much cheaper than Fuji, Sony etc.
hi what is that photo app please ?
Hyper focal pro.
Mattias Burling thank you ! I quess its only for android users :(
There are countless of clones :)
Honestly there is no point using genuine Leica Lenses anymore. I do not think no one can distinguish the difference! They won!
I definitely can see the difference, easily :)
You should take some photos with gopro 🧐
I have a Nikon Key Mission these days. But I haven't tried its stills function yet.
personally i am waiting for the 21 voigt 1.4 M mount
How is this better than the camera of an iPhone 11?!
In every single way imaginable.
Mattias Burling I’m sorry, but I’m not an expert and when looking at the pictures, I can’t seem to see any reason why it is better. Maybe it’s about the creation process, holding a real camera, having the lenses, post processing etc..
In short, with the iPhone you don't get a wide angle, no tele photo, tiny sensor, no creative control, no hss, AF sucks, metering sucks, MF sucks, no lens choices, the list goes on and on.
The phone is also extremely slow and clunky so you will miss the shot 90% of the time.
It's like comparing a shovel to a bulldozer. Sure both of them can move dirt.
Leica M8 in 2020? Maybe nee Video?
I don't think I have anything to add from the last two :)
Mattias Burling ok, so i have to watch these again:)
I thought you sold all your cameras for a Leica except Ricoh GRiii
I did.
What? So in the future another one with more or less only Leica related content ... so sad!
@@peterhassiepen3009 what are you talking about? I have always owned only two cameras at the time.
Mattias Burling apologize! Miss interpretation!
I wasn't a big fan of the lens and sent it back. Too soft wide open, extreme purple fringing and so on. I got a used voigtländer 21 mm 1.8 instead and its been great so far. Relatively small size and the best part... Its sharp wide open and gets even better stopping down 🙂 Imo the better choice for a 21 mm lens.
Hey Daniel, am also choosing between the 21 Ultron or the TTA. What body are you using it on? I am adapting on a Lumix S5 and would prefer the smaller size of the TTA.
@@Jaymino_ Hi! I'm using the Voigtlander on a Leica m240 and I'm still happy with my choice. I think the Voigtlander is more compact in comparison to the ttartisan, as far as I remember the ttartisan. Maybe the Voigtlander is a little thicker but the ttartisan should be longer. Compared wide open the Voigtlander is far better imo
@@duesenbeat hey Daniel, appreciate your quick reply on your experience with the voigtlander. You have been helpful. Have you considered the voigtlander 21 3.5 color skopar? It's a new design more compact but of course you lose some light.
@@Jaymino_ Youre welcome. No I like to have a fast f stop, for a good versatility so i don't have to much gear to carry, and get nice low light shots without the need to push the iso to far 🙂
Mmmmm, not enough photos of your dog.
B
pretty good
looks to be a very soft lens
Never try to judge that on CZcams is my tip. Go check higher resolution samples.
How can a manual focus lens be fast?
We are talking about fast aperture here.
But to answer you question anyway, from 0-35mm focal lengths manual focus is always much faster than AF imo. Simply by using zone focus. Thats why often use MF for street photography, AF isn't fast enough. When you begin to press the button to focus your AF lens my MF lens is already in focus.
Leica with a jam jar - isn't that defeating the entire objective (pun not intended)?
Nope, that's one of the biggest myths about Leica online. I will make a video about that and other common misconceptions regarding Leica.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Hey Mattias - I wasn't being serious - just hitting on the very 'misconceptions' you will do in the future - I love Leica - the simplicity, the engineering etc - but as a pro I can't bring myself to put such an outlay into my professional work - I have the uber chunky - ridiculously complex GFX as my daily workhorse shooting cars with Bronny 1200L's - and it works supremely well once it is simplified down for my old brain - so it wouldn't fit - however....Dear Santa....
For work I use an EOS R. When time is money I want an around camera that can be used for both video and stills :)
Who are they kidding? If they wanted people to think of them as a different company, they should not have used such a similar name. They could have positioned it as the higher quality brand of 7 Artisans. I don't think their customers would mind that.
They are different companies in the same way that Cosina/Voigtländer and Zeiss is. Different management and marketing, same factory.
You and Maarten Heilbron is not one and the same, confusing?
heilbron is dutch canadian...
"Gear doesn't matter" if you have Leica xd
Gear doesn't matter period. A cheap Leica M8 or super expensive Fuji doesn't matter for the results. Just look at my Instagram videos and camera blind tests :)
