Most reviews gloss over payload capacity because the Tesla wins it by a country mile. Oh, wait, besides their fake "volume test" Edmonds glossed over the payload capacity too! Probably because the Cybertruck's 2500 lb. payload capacity leaves the other two in the dust.

No actual towing, I didn't buy my truck just to drive to work. How well do they tow?

    • @ZipZoomZip
      @ZipZoomZip Před měsícem

@matthewtruitt8077 I've towed various work trailers my entire life, but very rarely out of the local area. All the jobs I have taken are within an hour's drive (because it's difficult to make much money when you have to drive more than an hour each way, each day). But to answer your question, EV's have superior tow dynamics and safety, due to their great torque, responsive throttles, regen braking and solid heft with a very low center of gravity. You will not find tow dynamics like that in any gas or diesel vehicle. This will make towing even right up to the limit, a very easy and relaxing affair with superior control and stability.
Of the three EV trucks reviewed in this dumb comparison, the Cybertruck is going to be superior, due to its higher chassis rigidity, relatively long wheelbase and short rear overhang (distance from tow ball to rear axle).
Chassis rigidity is what prevents trailer sway from being amplified which is basically what happens with the traditional ladder frame. I have a 2010 F-150 and the trailer needs to be setup and properly balanced or you WILL get trailer sway with heavier trailers because the truck's chassis is very flexy. The Cybertruck, in comparison, will have almost zero chassis flex, like it is hewn from a single billet. It is more rigid than the chassis of a McLaren F1, even a heavy, improperly setup trailer is not going to experience every person's worst nightmare, trailer sway going out of control. That's what causes most loss of control events at highway speeds. Mind you, you still want your trailer reasonably well setup so it will have good braking and emergency avoidance dynamics, but the ability and benefits of a rigid chassis to dampen oscillations shouldn't be under-estimated. The Cybertruck will have a very tight, responsive ride, even when towing right up to its 11,000 lbs. tow limit.

    Great review/comparison.
Just wanted to point out that you did search for other areas to get more cargo (boxes) into F150 and the Rivian, but did miss a point of storage in the end that you showed for a bit in the video. you could have fit more boxes in the far section of the Cybertruck bed and still closed the Vault. At least three and maybe four more boxes, thus making it the winner. And if you wanted to go crazy, the fold-up second row seats would have made this a total blowout!. Also, don't know if one box would have fit under the bed? In the end of your storage comments while you judged it barely being behind, you actually said "not much in it" about the Cybertruck. A bit harsh for your almost tie. Again... in the end it does hold more.
Thanks; and again, a very nice overall presentation.

If I had the money, I would buy all three trucks! We use the F150 Lightning Platinum at work and it is GREAT! INSANELY BIG AND COMFORTABLE and is can STILL tow a typical 10,000 lbs worth of flat bed trailer with typical low-bed cargo for over 160 km (100 miles) on a single charge. For most urban and suburban environments that is more than enough for daily work and home use.
For off-road use, I would change the tires of the Rivian to 33 inch Goodyear Duratracs and it would just fine as my weekend warrior vehicle that goes into the back-country lakes and rivers for some fishing and carrying my ruggedized inflatable fishing kayak.
The Cybertruck is the vehicle I want to drive to the local city park for a BBQ with family and friends and use for the 2.5 hour drive to the local ski resorts (i.e. Whistler-Blackcomb from Vancouver!) blasting some 1980's era music all the way there while we sip on mocha lattes! It's a show-off vehicle for a company owner or local executive AND for the suburban mall crawler who wants some stylish comfort while driving over to park it for a few hours at the local mall or library!

It seems like a wonky review. I understand that they did cover driving impressions, but they showed the Lightning and Rivian's range and 0-60 time, but spent more time on the Cybertruck's turning radius and voice operated wiper controls. It was similar to their silly harping on the Tesla Model S Plaid's yoke steering (which is now an option), but they missed the Plaid's unequaled combination of acceleration, comfort and economy for the price. The Foundation Edition Cybertruck's price is high, but it is easy to option a Ford F150 Lightning or Rivian up to that $100K price as well. My take is that this video is mostly just a temptation to go to their website to hopefully see the important comparative information, laid out more objectively.

The ntcase dinged Cybertruck unnecessarily. Cybertruck is quicker, more manueverable, more horsepower, has bigger bed, bigger payload, higher towing capacity etc etc but somehow it is neither good as a work truck nor as a lifestyle truck??? Cybertruck easily wins the tractor pull test over the other two. Others have already done it and Edmunds doesn't want to pay just to make the Tesla look better. This is a joke of a review, carefully scripted to try to appear rational.

The Cybertruck has already outpulled the F-150 Lightning, even though it's lighter. Those All-Terrain tires might reduce the range a bit, but they give better traction in a tractor pull contest. Also, Tesla are well known to have great traction control delivery. These are common items already for people that don't have zero visibility in the back as is the case with the Cybertruck. It would be annoying to always have part of the screen used for this view and then it would get confusing to have that same spot on the screen switch to left or right when turning.

This is interesting because until now, the actual tests that we've seen for range on the Cybertruck have been absolute worst case scenario range tests, which obviously gave results that worried everyone and made them complain about it. Looking at these trucks all under the same conditions (except for the CT not having tires to help range) the range really isn't that different. It looks like should the CT be given better tires it could be very comparable to the F-150

Sure the F-150 Lightning is the more truck oriented vehicle. But it is not the better F-150. You've seen it yourself, towing is less than acceptable. I do understand that this is a truck test being conducted in the city in California. Bring these to mountains (east or west, winter or summer) and slap a trailer on there. Tell me where you are charging these while you ride your dirtbike, ATV, snowmobile, or take the boat out... if you even make it in the first shot. Good to know they handle some lowes moving boxes, but real world these are just bigger daily drivers.

I have an F150 Lightning Lariat. It is basically an F150 with an electric battery. I love mine. It has plenty of visibility without using a camera. It has a 5 1/2 foot bed, and you could easily install ladder racks or toolboxes. You would have to ask the dealer about changing out the bed. If it could be done, the Ford is probably the one that it could be done on. The battery packs all have long warranties, eight years and 100,000 miles or thereabouts. battery reliability is likely to be high if the manufacturer is warranting that for such a long period of time. Obviously if your battery goes bad at nine years and 150,000 miles, it will be expensive to replace. Pretty much every new car on the road right now has an infotainment screen. It is a matter of how small you can get it. The basic trims on the F150 have a smaller screen.

And I've owned Mercedes S class and exotic imports. The lack of dealerships has been a major con, not a plus. It was the most painful purchase experience I've ever had, where they couldn't even tell me where my car was for several months, and this was for a car that was theoretically already built and sitting on their lot. They flat out lied about a majority of their features. They've consistently refused to honor their warranty, or their prepaid service plan. And they routinely remove functionality or degrade the user interface with nearly every software update while not allowing you to opt out of the updates.
I will never, under any circumstance, buy another Tesla as long as I shall live.
