  • Here are 3 common tips we regularly need to share with our riders as they learn to foil surf waves that last over 2 minutes long.
    1.) Getting the equipment right:
You need to have a well balanced board with the right equipment. If you can't ride you're board with a relatively neutral stance then you're going to get very tired after a short period of time. Often times new riders need to make several adjustments to their equipment before they can find a stance that allows them to ride with evenly distributed weight on their feet. Many times it's as simple as moving the mast. However bigger adjustments might also be necessary.
    2.) Reading the Waves:
We teach a lot of new riders to foil surf in real waves for the first time. One of the biggest challenges for new riders can be reading the wave. Sometimes getting good at reading waves requires experience. But regardless of experience riders need to learn to ride with their head up and to continually be looking up and down the wave trying to anticipate what is going to do and where are the most powerful sections are going to be. The waves are dynamic and if you're going to ride for 2 minutes or longer you will need to travel though several sections as the wave changes shape and shifts.
    3.) Don't Pump:
Pumping can be helpful for wave transfers or to generate more speed through slower sections, however new riders have a tendency to pump when it's completely unnecessary. To avoid unnecessary pumping and to reinforce good wave reading habits I always ask beginner & intermediate riders not to pump. I actually ask them to replace their pumping with more wave reading. So every time you want to pump you replace it with looking around the wave and repositioning yourself to find the power. Making sure you're riding the board with the right amount of altitude can also help generate more speed and power.
