So, without further ado, let's dive into our top five tips for long jump technique:
5. Foot Position at Takeoff: Discover the importance of proper hip and foot position at the board and learn how it can impact your speed and power at takeoff. Hint - land underneath your center of mass.
4. Visualize Your Jump: Hear from world record holder Mike Powell and Olympic bronze medalist Janay Deloach Soukup about the power of visualization and how it can help you achieve success in every jump.
3. The approach/controlled sprint. The approach isn't just about sprinting as fast as you can. Coach Baily talks about the different technique required for the long jump approach vs a 100m sprint and why control is so essential.
2. When and How to Create Speed: The drive phase is a critical element of the long jump. Discover the ideal speed curve for your approach and learn why accelerating to the board can actually hinder your performance.
1. Landing for Maximum Distance: Your landing technique can make or break your jump distance. Master the proper body positions and movement sequence for maximum distance and optimal landing form.

Thanks, I have my school long jump today so I’ll see how this go’s.
Another great video! The split screen of Carl Lewis' 100m sprint technique vs. long jump sprint technique was really insightful. Thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
I got 1st in my meet today, I jumped 18’1 but I feel like its still worth improving. I completely forgot my form over the last year and winged this meet, since I only train to run.
Congratulations, 18'1 is a great mark without training. Focusing on technique will definitely help you go farther!
This is helpful I hit 19’2 this season for freshman year but recently my Jumps have been not nearly on par with what I’ve jumped so hopefully I can try this and it’ll get me jumping to what I have or even further
Keep at it, sometimes progress comes in chunks, Be patient and the results will happen. Good luck!
What's ur height man
As a beginner to long jump this video was incredibly helpful! 😁
Great to hear!
Last season (8th grade) I started my first 3 meets with mid 18s and was ranked top 25 in the state. Then I tweaked my left leg and couldn’t get over 17 the rest of the year. I’m hoping this year going into it I can stay healthy and hit mid 19s especially since I’ve been training all summer and trying to prevent injuries.
The best jumpers are the healthy ones so it's good to hear you're making that a priority. Best of luck and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for this video! It’s really helpful. I’m a freshman in high school, and have never done track before. I can only jump 12 feet, and want to be able to jump 16 by the end of the summer. I want to jump further than my older brother😜I’ll try these tips out tomorrow, and see how far I go!
Welcome, keep us updated and good luck!

I'm from Brazil and I'm looking at tips here because there aren't many tips here in Brazil and equipment with speed shoes is absurdly expensive so I hope to learn as much as possible from people abroad
I'm 13 years old and my personal record is 5.64 in competition training and 5.25
You can do it!
Im 15 years old and im jumping 17ft trying to get 20ft as my new pr bye the end of winter track 🤞🏿
Best of luck!
I am jumping at 4.6 m daily. Going to try this to maximise my jump and reach 4.9
Keep at it and you'll get there, good luck!
I’m a freshmen girl and my PR is 14’9”! Realllyyy trying to get into 15 or 16 because a senior girl at my school is going to college to do long jump. (Her pr is abt 16)
That's an impressive PR, congratulations! To break into the 15' or even 16' mark, focus on refining your technique, especially your approach (proper sprinting mechanics), takeoff, and landing. Remember, consistency in practice and a positive mindset are key. Keep pushing your limits, and you might find yourself not only reaching but surpassing your goals. Keep up the great work!
I have nationals here in Ireland on 6th of April so this is good
Let us know how it goes and good luck!
Do you got any tips for jumping higher whilst maintaining speed in long jump
Develop good knee drive. Work on improving your approach, this will help you generate more speed and power. Bounding drills will also help as well as developing explosive power with your legs. Remember, you don't get any points for going high in the long jump, you want to make sure that height translates into distance.
watching this at a meet 💀💀💀
Can you do tip and tricks for a 400m
Good suggestion!
Thank you
Welcome!
Does height matter?
I have one more day to practice for track and fields, I just got the news that I’m gonna go because the top 5 can’t come, so I’m a replacement. I’m so scared, and nervous, I only have tomorrow as practice. Until it’s the day to compete. 😥
Nervous=Excitement. Have fun and enjoy the opportunity!

Say hi to Mike while your up there
6m 8cm at 15
I'm supposed to jump 6.20m to get a perfect grade and I have never ever done long jump in my life. I feel like my trainer is not that good, I don't know what to do
I keep reaching no matter what. Should I move my mark up?
It really depends on why you are reaching. You can certainly try moving up the mark and seeing if that helps. You can also work on with shorter approaches in practice or things like box drills.
Idk about u guys but I have sports day tomorrow and I am in long jump sooo.
My son is 15 and his longest jump is 19'7 this year. How can i coach him at home during the off season.
