    Which tennis forehand stance is best? When should you use each forehand stance in tennis? Transform your forehand with our free forehand guide here - www.top-tennis-training.com/f...
    In this lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will explain the different tennis forehand stances and when to use each one.
    This includes the open stance tennis forehand stance, the neutral stance and the closed stance.
    What is the stance? Prior to hitting the forehand in tennis, you'll want to set up in a balanced way. Having a wide, athletic base to push off from will help you generate more power, topspin and control. The way you position your feet will determine your stance.
    Open Stance Forehand - The open stance forehand is where you have both feet almost aligned, in line with the baseline. The inside foot can be slightly ahead of the outside foot, but not by much. This stance will allow you to drive upwards, into the ball. Perfect for hitting on the move, dealing with higher balls or on shorter balls where you want to drive into the contact zone. Imagine doing a lunge onto your right leg (if right-handed) and then jumping out of that position whilst rotating the hips and trunk.
    Neutral Stance Forehand - This stance is where you have the front foot in front of the body, aligned with the back foot. This stance is perfect for transferring your body weight into the shot. It's used mainly on slightly shorter or softer balls where you have time to really set up and step into the ball.
    Closed Stance Forehand - This stance is where you have the front foot across the body line which blocks the rotation of the body. This stance is best avoided, but on the full run, you may have to use it occasionally.

    • @adamae.7246
      @adamae.7246 Před 3 lety +3

      With the open stance, I think the impact point would be slightly more in front than on neutral but it depends more on the zone you are aiming (strike the ball a bit earlier when you go cross-court, or near to the body level to go down the line).

    • @jamesohara9133
      @jamesohara9133 Před 3 lety +1

      @@adamae.7246 Thanks, yea, that seems about right, good points. I struggle with the impact point on a forehand closed stance but the odd thing is with a closed backhand I have no problem at all but there are other variables involved. In the closed stance one-handed backhand your hitting arm is the "front" arm whereas with a forehand it's the "back" arm. I find that a bit challenging. Thanks again!

      As said by coach Simon, it is better to avoid closed stance forehand but if you have to use it you should absolutely allow your hips to open by steping in with your right leg during the follow through so you will be able to contact the ball enough in front of your body.

      Yes it does... it also depends on the grip... I am 17 and 6 foot 5 inches tall and I use an eastern forehand grip... I used to use semi western in the past... based on my experience, eastern is further in front on semi open stance and slightly in front on open (closed is compact rather than reaching)... semi western and western are the same as eastern but generally semi western stays a bit closer to the body than eastern does
