      @passingliaison Před 6 lety +2

Are you people serious, or are you just pretending to be stupid? It's hard to tell sometimes, especially when I know some people actually take these "criticism" videos seriously. Cinemasins intentionally nit pic their sins, they've stated this numerous times. I'm gonna guess the Gamingsins guy is too sins he copied their schtick. So why are people acting so butthurt in comment sections?
Is it people just getting in on the joke, or are people actually this friggin' stupid? The reason I ask is there seem to be far more people acting as if they think these "criticism" videos are legit criticism, not the overly nitpicking "critiques" for comedic effect satires they actually are.

    • @nickv1212
      @nickv1212 Před 6 lety +5

Additional sin: the layout of Sarah's room is actually genius, and gives us a bunch of insights into her character. Without a word of dialogue being uttered, we can tell she's a tomboy who really enjoys things like soccer, skateboarding and cheesy action movies, but she also likes to read young adult fiction and probably has a strong romantic side, and there's probably other things we can infer about her but it's been a while since I played the game. Considering we don't spend a lot of time with this character, and yet she's an essential part of the plot, these little details go a long way toward helping the player feel some connection to her as a person.

One of those cathartic moments for me is when he points out that no one would actually expect a zombie apocalypse and respond confidently. Anyone that claims it is on the same level as an edgelord. I have the same visceral reaction when people complain about how characters respond in a genre movie. You know the protagonist isn't crazy when they claim to see supernatural events in a horror movie because you saw it from their perspective. You know you're watching a horror movie. The police officer thinks they are a background character in a police procedural or mystery movie. You just know the person that says they'd go for a headshot if they saw someone looking like a zombie is going to be getting a psych evaluation in preparation for the trial for murdering the accident victim looking for help.

The video even shows them in their mocap suits filming that scene (is it called "filming" in this context?) so I just don't get how someone could miss that.
You're right in that I should've paid more attention to this thread's age. I usually don't reply to year-old comments.

    • @SacridFire
      @SacridFire Před 6 lety +16

Yeah, it's super tone deaf, especially given how painful the scene is to watch (You'd spent enough time with the brothers to grow some slight affection for them before they died) and thus Sam's turning and Henry's suicide are just another tragedy on a game set in a world full of them. (I haven't seen Dartigan's video, but I assume he likely did something equally as tasteless with Tess' death earlier in the game)

My father was emotionally distant to me and my siblings growing up, and I see a lot of Joel in him. Therapy has helped a lot and really helped us come together.
And I'm a survivor of multiple childhood sexual assaults. The scene with David was so cathartic for me and just so well done and so real. I love your comment shutting down the critics cluelessness about what was happening in that scene. It was humorous but still maintained a respectful tone toward the issue of childhood sexual assault. Which many people including the original cinema sins don't maintain when talking about, for example, which movie it's okay for them to start thirsting after Herminoie in or in the original criticism for the game, thirsting after Ellie.

That guy missed the biggest sin in Last of Us; that recording from the doctor that says Ellie's blood grows cordiceps readily, thus invalidating the "we need to scoop out her brain" plot point. It really bothered me because it ruined what should have been a very dramatic part of the game, and it could have been fixed by simply removing the collectible from the game.

Thank you for the point about cliches. People acting like "cliche" is a bad thing always, all the time has annoyed me for as long as I've noticed it.
Clearly if somebody thought about it they'd realize that cliches can act as short-hand for authors (or directors, or screenwriters) in order to package a large amount of information in a small amount of exposition. It can be easier and more convenient to use cliches sometimes in order to focus on those elements of the story that truly matter because time is finite.
Also, it allows for satisfying subverting of cliches later.
Dismissing anything as cliche if you see it for a second is lazy and stupid, as evidenced by "exposition news broadcast cliche". Oh, you mean that on the news they're talking about stuff that's newsworthy? Indeed, what a cliche. That'd be like if you turned on ESPN and sports were on, or weather updates on the weather channel.
Should kids in video games not be allowed to play sports, because that's a cliche? Or have glasses, because that's a cliche too?
There's nothing I hate more than intellectual laziness, and goddamn does CS (and knockoffs) really embody that most frustrating and annoying of qualities.

When actually, because of technical limitations, trying to appeal to diverse audiences, and how immature the artform is, there are LOADS of actual things to complain about in terms of gameplay in almost every single game. AND there are more misused tropes and cliches where pointing that out would actually be valid.

3:20 I dunno, it was kinda set up in a way that made it pretty clear she would die early on. Still the execution of her death was done pretty well, mainly due to the acting and the pacing of the following scenes.
3:41 It's a kid with a lot of hobbies, and a lot of kids have the most common ones because.. they're common. They wouldn't really be common if a lot of people didn't have them. And yeah, the whole hobby thing isn't really a cliche, but rather a trope. A very harmless trope at that.
Also that "news exposition" scene was done pretty well. The way everything syncs up was neat.
5:34 Ugh... It'd be pretty damn weird if people didn't do panic at all. Could you imagine a robber walking into a bank, shooting his gun and yelling "this is an armed robbery" or something and then no one bats an eye? The guy might even shoot a person out of frustration and yet people still keep on doing their thing as if nothing happened. ... That actually sounds hilarious. A robber trying to rob a bank but he fails because no one gives a shit.
8:00 Bottled liquid animation! Look at dat surface liquid go! Whee!
8:43 Oh, you noticed it too. Well... shit.
8:52 Actually no, it's not necessary. Just make the level design a little more intuitive and help the player understand what to look for in the environment. Highlighting it like this can sometimes be a bit silly, like the ropes in Far Cry 3. But it's a nitpick, this works too. Just don't do it like Far Cry 3 did...
10:59 The puzzles in the game still ended up feeling like nothing but padding. The characters making snarky comments about these didn't really help either. The DLC seemed to realise how uninteresting the puzzles were and decided to make up for it with both variety and puzzles that tie a bit better into the overall setting, so that's a plus.
12:42 How to make an escort mission more tolerable: make the escorted the person act as if the game's rules never apply to them. It's not really a proper solution to the overall problem, but at least it doesn't cause problems either, other than immersion related ones.
15:33 People like to find some comfort in bad situations, things that can get their minds out of the present. Some people do this by collecting stamps, some play video games.
16:10 Still, a bit better player might feel a little cheated by this moment. Those players that pay more attention, look behind corners and avoid walking blindly into situations, will probably feel like the character suddenly forgot everything they did 5 minutes ago. But this isn't exactly a unique problem.
It'd be pretty neat if character action games for example had alternate cutscenes that reflect on the player's performance. Like if you get all SSS rank in Devil May Cry, you'd see Dante doing the coolest things ever in the next cutscene, while with a D rank he'd be a stumbling idiot that ends up taking his own sword to the chest and still somehow ends up winning.
20:37 Almost every chapter has a side character that ends up being only in that one chapter and then doesn't show up in the next. And of course the characters happen to be black, so going by the usual zombie movie cliches, it was pretty easy to see how this would end. Still, the acting was good. The way they made Sam talk in such an awkward manner to Ellie about death was a neat way to foreshadow his eventual demise, since it seemed pretty realistic. The actors are good.
And then... we just skip over to the next chapter. That kinda pissed me off, since I was interested in seeing how they would try to cope with what had happened and how they would move on. But nope, time skip and only hints about the character development we didn't really see on screen. Yay... At least the next chapter did have some on screen character development to make up for it.
24:26 Or you could do the same the DLC did, and make it sort of like Heavy Rain with interactions and such. Or deliver the action through flashbacks that also tell us more about the characters or some such. There are different ways to handle this, it doesn't have to turn into a predictable pattern.
26:11 Oh my gawd, look at that fire effect! Holy shit, is that an animated flat texture on the ground? Oh my gawd that looks horrible! xD
Also holy shit, that molotov did nothing to Joel and the horse!
27:16 Or maybe the AI goes through the gates and ends up triggering an event like zombies, I mean, infected running up to the gate, giving the player a sort of a set up for the next puzzle or something. Just throwing ideas out there, because the puzzles in the game kinda sucked...
27:43 There has been a pretty intense firefight, plenty of enemies around, now there's a closed door in front of Joel and.. he just casually walks up to it without expecting a thing. It kinda goes back to the disconnect between player and the character's mindset, and how the character making a mistake can make the player feel like the game cheated them.
Also Joel somehow survives both the fall and having a rusty pipe through his back. I mean.. I guess it's thin enough to miss all of his vital organs.
28:11 Next scene starts starring Ellie so we can wonder whether or not Joel is alive or dead.. even though the player knows that they haven't unlocked every upgrade in the game yet. I love it when the game itself spoils the surprises.
Also how the hell did Ellie get Joel back on the horse's back? It's not that.. oh right, the DLC covers that. Well then.
30:41 Sigh... David. At the start he makes the whole "killing bad guys" thing seem a bit more questionable, since he's a person from the side you usually fight. And... then he turns out to be a child raping cannibal. Welp... I mean the torture scene is a nice way to show the whole idea of how Joel isn't really much different from David, how David could be an alternate Joel, but that's kinda where that ends. David's just another "bad guy" that does a bit of mind games and that's it. Neat. At least Marlene succeeds at creating this reflection of Joel, a reflection of the ideals he had before he got closer to Ellie.
32:28 I actually call bullshit on this ambush. I looked over everywhere trying to spot any possible hiding spots, and there was not a single spot from which David could've ambushed Ellie from like that. He just phases into existence the moment you try to open that door.
    33:50
"Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?"
"You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection."
"Oh, yeah... sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!"
    - The President and his secretary - Metal Wolf Chaos
"I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!"
    - The Patriot AI - Metal Gear Solid 2
"Do you feel like a hero yet?"
    - Presumably the Radio Guy or Walker's own delusions - Spec Ops: The Line
"Who else will I have ice cream with?"
    - Blond Haired Kid.. I mean Jesse McCartney, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
"Monsters? They look like monsters to you?"
    - Vincent - Silent Hill 3...D Revelation is a horrible movie, don't watch it.
"Tell the doll I said hello."
    - Velka, I mean Velka's crow... turned human... with a British accent - Bloodborne
    "hOI! i'm TEMMIE!"
    - Temmie - Temmie - Temmie
    "Jill sandwich."
    - Jillhazard - Resident Sandwich
35:02 Even if he had tried to go cautiously here, it wouldn't have worked since the alley was so damn narrow. He had to quickly get away from the spot.
35:34 That knife would've most likely lasted about as long as the machete does, and that's assuming it had been maintained well.
36:17 At this point my nurse mom would probably have the same reaction as she did to Texas Chainsaw Massacre: people won't survive with that high of a blood loss.
36:45 Oh yeah, this reminds me of the game's water effects. Don't look at the water stream in Joel's brother chapter. You'll see the water streaming through walls and rocks and all the splash effects are very apparent 2D textures. The water overall looks fine, but these details are kinda humorous. It reminds me of PS2 games. Oh well, I've seen worse, like the waterfall in the Darkroot Basin in Dark Souls 1. Now that looked amazingly bad.
37:03 Congratulations, you have noticed the visual sign that lets us know that Joel's character has come full circle and has reached the end of his character arc. This is how "show, don't tell" works.
Yes, I'm sort of replying to the original video here.

Technically, it's not a zombie apocalypse either, sense the infection, doesn't actually turn people into zombies, in fact, it doesn't actually kill, just takes away any & all control, they had over what they do.
Also, scientists have found that, something like the Cordyceps fungus, COULD actually cause something like this in real life.

Gaming sins: criticizing for something being unoriginal
Also gaming sins: has a channel founded on literally ripping off literally every aspect of another channel
Missing from the equation: self awareness.

Please continue to tear EWW and Gamingsins a new one. I mean, the fact you are not only funny in the criticisms you make on these guys but also point out actual sins and problems they missed (as well as the hell of a lot of research you must do before rebunking each sin) shows just how pathetic these guys are.
And I hope you do their EWW Civil War video. I haven't seen it, but I am interested to see yours and sure as hell ain't giving them a view.

For sin 39 about Ellie driving stick, it's also made obvious in the DLC and the American Dreams comic that Ellie has received military training to some extent, so it's completely possible that some of that training up til now has included learning to drive.
