    The "How did you see that?" "Because I was looking for it," exchange is also a famous quote from the Sherlock Holmes stories by Doyle. The Guy Ritchie films are full of quotes from the original books. Also, him noticing that "That's the Irene I knew" IS in fact indicating that she's returned to a life of crime, which she'd given up to get married-again, right out of the book. She tells Holmes in the previous scene that she's now divorced and he's noting that she's back to how he remembered her. Watson is established as being a spiritualist (much like Doyle himself) in the books as a counterpoint to Holmes's rationalist approach. These guys know nothing about the story they're critiquing.
    Oh, and fun fact: the man Holmes is boxing in this movie (credited as "McMurdo") is actually the same guy he's speaking with in the quote from The Sign of Four that you used, where he's initially unwilling to let Holmes into a house he's guarding until Holmes reminds him that he's the man who once kicked his ass in an amateur boxing match.

      >"How did you see that?" "Because I was looking for it,"
      It also, in two sentences, is a great illustration of the difference between Holmes and Watson. Holmes is observant enough to think about there might be an invisible weapon, maybe from the way that Blackwood was just standing there, while Watson is the one ready to rush to the girl's defense and be all brave and all that. It's why they make such a good team and (partly) why Watson marrying and moving out scares Holmes so much and is the major theme of the film and oh my god I'm getting mad at cinemasins again

    • @howiej820
      @howiej820 Před 6 lety +2

      Wilfred Ho yea, I would say that if outside research is necessary the movie did something wrong. However, many of the sins are not necessary to research. Often you can just assume the movie did it right, or at least just accept the movie’s portrayal of situations we aren’t knowledgeable about. I’m just saying that CS is picky and has useless nitpicks, but that they are right about not researching stuff. In this scenario it is odd to see someone pluck a violin- it is a fair question to wonder why you wouldn’t use a bow. Some of CS sins are worse, but this one is a fair question in my opinion.

    As someone who used to enjoy CinemaSins, a major thank you for making this video. The final straw for me was when they criticized James Gunn in his recent controversy involving Disney. CinemaSins has made some VERY questionable "jokes" in the past, including making light of Chris Brown physically beating Rihanna. So they have very little room to claim others are incapable of changing their views on certain subjects, and learning to abstain from problematic behavior. James Gunn, at the very least, has apologized for his remarks (afaik). CinemaSins is purely brainless, and if I want comical movie commentary, there are infinitely better sources for it. Now you see what that was would be called satire, the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues, such as what CinemaSins actually is, a fact that many people seem to just straight-up not realise or ignore. CS is a satire of movie reviews as a whole, the entire concept is a comedy channel that focuses on people that make stupid, absurd commentary about movies and film and satirising them by using a character that embellishes and exaggerates that act to such an extreme manner that people constantly complain and whine about how wrong they are and how they're so stupid for not doing research. Great vid. One note: In bare knuckle boxing, slapping your opponent is not mockery. The human head is almost literally skin and bone, so punching someone in the head with your bare fist is a good way to break your hand. Thus, slaps and palm strikes are preferable over knuckle to skull contact since our palms are padded and what gets KOs is the force more than the hardness of the object striking you.

    • @zacklooney512
      @zacklooney512 Před 6 lety +4

      its litt you get clocked hard enough almost anywhere in the skull and you’ll get knocked out. Also your fist and your hand weigh the same. Also it’s more about the force of the object than the hardness.

      @jjj7790 Před 6 lety +2

    Quick point about the shipyard fight that makes it even worse: Not only did Holmes & Watson's fight basically destroy a shipyard and cause thousands of pounds in damage, it also resulted in the premature launching and subsequent sinking of a ship into the River Thames, the most heavily trafficked body of water in the world then and now, so it's a miracle they didn't damage or sink any other ships that may have been sailing by. Further, one can tell by the half-complete ship's iron hull and distinctive ram bow that this wasn't just any ship they sank, it was a warship. So not only did Holmes and Watson just cause tens of thousands of pounds in damages and destroy months of work, they're also now in deep shit with the British Royal Navy.

    Another thing about 3:30 - in actual fact, lots and lots of people will watch this movie without seeing the poster, trailer, or DVD cover. Lots of people decide which movies to see in theaters by checking the titles of currently playing movies and seeing if any of them sound interesting (and maybe glancing at its Rotten Tomatoes score). Lots of people go to see movies that their friends/spouses/family members pick out without themselves knowing anything about the film beforehand. When this movie inevitably ends up on Cable TV, lots of people will see it because they saw "Sherlock Holmes" while scrolling through the channel guide and decided to check it out.
    The bottom line is that assuming that the audience knows absolutely nothing about your movie beforehand is good filmmaking practice, because if your movies is successful then lots of people *will* see it without knowing anything about it beforehand.

    I really feel like Cinemasins has become a strong example of the belief that if someone has to state their work is satire, then it wasn't very good satire. The sins inbetween the jokey jokes sound like legitimate criticism, and are not easy to deduce as another joke. But then there is the fact that they made many comments about the videos not being serious, and that's how many fans even know it's all one big comedy series. So then they go into the video knowing it's satire. And then when people take it seriously, or are trying to point out that it's just not very good satire, the fans say it's all on them for missing the obvious comedy. But it's not always obvious, and it's definitely not always funny.
    I like Cinemasins, but I have yet to find any legitimately good defense made by fans in regards to these videos. And yet they have the gall to say you're taking this too seriously. Like someone balls-deep in the fandom like they are might not be the most unbiased opinion on Cinemasins.

      @lucasandersons Před 6 lety +6

      Some asshole makes a video series entirely about making nitpicky comments about movies. Some dude decides to take it all as legit criticisms and makes a video saying how wrong they are. • @tiawilliams5690
      @tiawilliams5690 Před 6 lety +78

      In order to get a "joke", Cinemasins takes each movie apart and treating each scene and moment as if it exists in its own space. He's essentially making things up. For comedy to work, there needs to be some element of truth. Good satire makes you think, highlights the absurd, can evoke change, and is always clearly satire.

    Two things - 1) I absolutely love this video! It is great to see someone critique cinemasins. You really summarised how I often feel.
    2) One of the sins is about London geography - I understand that the London Bridge shot is planting for later pay-off but to go via the river (even without crossing it) which is significantly further south and literally the opposite direction to reach pentonville prison is still illogical. I live in London and have studied the history of it. Even in a late 1800s to pre WW1 era, the roads still have existed. It is, I believe, simply a case of a film wanting the iconic landmark and set up more than perfect accuracy, which is fine but I thought I would say. While your criticism of their sin stands, the point that their route would still make no sense is actually valid based on London's geography. I hope you aren't offended.

    8:52 Punching wrong is a great way to break your knuckles. In barekuckle boxing, it would actually be a bad idea to always punch, all the time.
    While I agree that the applause is to frustrate his opponent and goad him into fighting poorly, many of the slaps are less to aggravate, and more to try to trauma his opponents various different nerve clusters, and try to stun him.
    Holmes has no problem with a balled-fist punch later in the bout, but it's less damaging and risky to Holmes to make liberal use of elbow strikes, palm strikes, and slaps or chops to sensitive places, as much as is practical.
    As you rightly point out, Holmes is an avid student of anatomy, and he sees no reason to risk breaking his knuckles, some of the softest bones in the human body, on strikes that ultimately won't do much damage to his opponent, like the forehead, when the mandible, for example, is a far better target. If you want to box his ears and disorient him, a punch would actually apply less force and be less effective than open handed slap.
    Boxing fans often wax romantically about how it is a "science", and Holmes is the quintessential scientist. Of course every strike is going to be a calculation, "How can I hit something soft of yours with something hard of mine?"

By 1880 the Navy only had 48 ships in commission, 6,000 men, and the ships and shore facilities were decrepit but Congress saw no need to spend money to improve them. The Navy was unprepared to fight a major maritime war before 1897."

    During the Civil War, a single Confederate commerce raider, CSS Alabama, "damaged Union merchant shipping around the world. The Confederate cruiser claimed 65 prizes valued at nearly $6,000,000 (approximately $94,000,000 in today's dollars)" Other Confederate raiders would destroy some 135 more prizes, and driving many hundreds more to be sold into foreign hands, devastating the US merchant fleet such that it would not recover until World War I.

Agoraphobia isn't a fear of fights or public areas, it's a fear of things or places that cause anxiety and as acting can help me relieve anxiety, boxing may do that for Holmes. So it makes since that he would box either way

    After six years, this video remains fantastic as it truly encapsulates why Cinemasins' videos are bottom-of-the-barrel in quality and entertainment value. Despite what their most fervent fans and apologists claim, Cinemasins' videos are overwrought, poorly written clickbait with a creator that has capitalized off having it both ways with film criticism and comedy.

    Thank you for this, I really dont get the love for these things, I remember flipping out during everything wrong with age of ultron when they sinned it for "I guess captain america can telepathically call his shield back to him?" when he was saving the woman on the bridge in the 3rd act WHEN IT WAS CLEARLY SHOWN AT THE FIRST 5 MINS OF THE MOVIE HE HAS MAGNETS ON HIS SLEEVE THAT STARK HAS DESIGNED FOR HIM! this is the type of careless shitty jokes seen in all their vids

      as a cinemasins fan i whuld argue that the main goul(grammar go byebye) of the chanel is not to give actual quality critique. like i migh be wrong but at least when I whatch ther videos I go expecting reddit level jokes and out of this whord nitpicking never an acutal video to tell me if the movie is good

    At 9:58, Cinemasin's comment about Victorian London not being "that backwards" is misleading. He cuts the clip after the words "You are sentenced to death for the practice of black magic", implying that is the only reason they are executing him, while the whole quote is "You are sentenced to death for the practice of black magic, the unholy murder of 5 innocent young women, and the attempted murder of a 6th." I would imagine the 5 counts of murder and 1 count of attempted murder are contributing to his sentence quite a bit.

      +Yuki Ahmed the way CinemaSIns does their videos requires very little actual effort from what i can tell. the only actual work the guy does is selecting the clips from the movies to include in the video, some mild audio mixing, and sometimes he has to make a PNG of an arrow or a circle appear to highlight a detail. very little work required

    Imagine some dudebro sitting in the cinema spending most of the time on his phone but paying just enough attention to make "witty" MST3k comments out loud as if that shit wasn't the most annoying thing to listen to. Cinemasins is the youtube embodiment of that guy.

    10:20 Apparently CinemaSins missed the scene where Irene and Sherlock discussed her recent marriage and divorce. Holmes was following her partly to find out what she was doing in his life again, and partly to confirm she really hadn't reformed when she got married.
