I agree. Penix has a higher upside than most people are saying. I think we should’ve tried to sign a game manager like Gardner Minshew, but Penix is a good pick. Also, it’s way more likely that there’s a generational defensive player lower in the draft than a generational quarterback. I think we’ll finish out drafting mostly defense and we’ll be fine.

I don't think that contract is that bad in the current environment. The pick absolutely doesn't make sense IMO. Anyone picking Penix in the first round anywhere is not a good choice simply due to his age, injury history, and the other available options. Is he a great story? Absolutely. That's irrelevant. Great college player. But it's just a bad investment in the first round even not considering the situation on the rest of the team.

So after sitting on this decision for almost 24 hours and listening to the Falcons explain this, here is my line of thinking that im assuming the Falcons went through. They needed a QB backup because they wanted to avoid the QB drought we had after Ryan left. So they intended to get Penix at some point in the draft like round 2 or trade to ensure they'd get him after another much needed player. When they saw the amount of QBs being drafted early on. I assume that they made the call when they were on the clock to pull the trigger. Im more ok with it than i was last night. I am extremely hesitant but open to the idea. Especially since we've done the same shit for a while now. So doing something different might be good... or im too numb to the bullshit idfk lol.

The only way I can see it make sense is that the first two seasons of Cousins’ deal isn’t too oppressive.
    2024 cap hits - Cousins $25M, MPJ $4m
    2025 cap hits - Cousins $40M, MPJ $4.5m
Having a total spend of $29M and $45m for your Top 2 QBs over the next two years isn’t too bad for all injury/form contingencies/flexibilities.
2026 then becomes a weird pivot point. Cousins (Age-38) has one more season until he can opt out and that season’s a $57.5M cap hit for him. 🤷‍♂️

Tbf, the Vikings hopes heading into this offseason was that we would both resign Cousins and draft a QB to train a year or two behind him - which isn't too different than Atlanta.
    The _difference_ is:
    1) The Vikings weren't going to pay Cousins anywhere close to 4-year/$180 million. Falcons GREATLY over-payed AND may cost them draft picks next year.
    2) The Vikings weren't going to draft an older QB like Penix who also has injury concerns. Our top targets were either Maye or McCarthy. Falcons chose Penix over McCarthy.
    3) Cousins' cap hit meant that we were always just kind-of treading around the Wild Card Bubble instead of being a true contender, so losing him may have jump-started a much-needed rebuild of our roster. Plus we get Dallas Turner to compete to be our Danielle Hunter replacement... whom the Falcons snubbed at Pick #8.

  • @benjihuynh2970
    @benjihuynh2970 Před 2 měsíci

So the Brett kollmann thing that Tom mentioned (it was actually EJ not Brett) goes like this:
Falcons will receive a punishment for tampering in free agency to get cousins.
The theory EJ proposed is that the Falcons believe this punishment will be losing their first round pick next year.
If Kirk doesn't work out, the falcons will want to get a new QB through the draft (because of cap space limitations), but won't be able to use their first rounder to do so and they'll have to wait until the year after (2026) to try and get one.
This way if Kirk works out and the falcons succeed, no one really kills them for getting a QB and if he doesn't, they already have a backup plan which they would've had to wait 2 seasons to get instead of the usual 1.
Why they made this decision is anyone's guess. Maybe they really didn't like the day 2 QB's AND really didn't like the 2026 QB draft class, maybe they have extremely reliable Intel from within the NFL, maybe they think penix is just that dude. But that was EJ's theory about the logic behind the pick

My only justification is that ATL has 3 key arguments that ALL need to be true for it to make a lick of sense:
    1. Kirk's injury is worse than they thought when they paid him.
    2. The best way to get your future franchise QB is to sit him for a few years to develop.
    3. They're losing picks next year that they would have needed to get a good QB in the draft.
Only if all 3 of those are true does it make sense for them to think "ok, well we may need to have insurance on our Kirk Cousins decision, and we need to do that now because we think we'll be screwed trying to recover from this decision later" which is still, at best, scary to be so concerned that you messed up with a major contract.

      @rozzey1321 Před 2 měsíci +1

It actually is as crazy if not crazier than people are making it seem. You give Kirk 100 mill in guaranteed money. You could have gone with a bridge option like Gardner minshew for 10 mill and picked up 😊defensive pieces. Danielle hunter, Christian Wilkins Jonathan grenard all pieces that could have been had for some of that money. Nope you pay it all to Kirk which is fine. But now you go to the draft and could have gotten a generational defensive talent and you go with a back up qb ? So you strike out on defense not only in free agency but also in the draft. Not to mention Kirk is signed for at least 3 years. That’s 3 more drafts even if you don’t get someone next year you can try the year after. Then let’s look at who they picked. Michael penix jr. he’s a great player but he’s the player that was injured the most out of all these QBs and that’s who you’re going to have back up a guy coming off an injury. So what if he comes in and gets injured after a few games? You have to go to free agency or trade for another guy. Then he’s 24 he will be 28 when he gets a chance to play that’s old. This sets the franchise back. But hey it’s not my team 😂

The problem is that he doesn't need to develop. Outside of Williams, he's arguably the most NFL ready QB in the draft. He's played in college for 6 seasons.
Once two years is up, Penix will be 27-28 and on the third year of his rookie deal. If Cousins stays for the full term, Penix may not be the starter until he's 29-30, and the rookie contract is basically gone.
The only way this would've worked out well publicly (and potentially internally) is if they never signed Cousins in the first place. It basically shows that they wasted $100 million guaranteed on something they didn't need.

To play the devils advocate, I suspect they saw something in him that they think will allow them to coach him for a few years and have him reach the level they want. However, unless we see a contract detailing how much he's being paid (and it showing he's taking a reduced salary), this is unfounded. All I can say is, let's see what he can do. He's got a lot to prove and I want to see him rise.

I really think Perna is wayyyy off with this. He cant comprehend actually trying to develop a guy behind a good QB instead of waiting for your good QB to retire then pick a guy destined for failure. (shout out broncos) Why wait until they need a QB in 2-3 years just to wait even LONGER because chances are that guy wont be ready year one either when you can have 2 years of Kirk and if all goes well a long time of Penix. QB is the most important and premium position in football so I don't understand why so many teams handle them like good QBs just grow on trees and that "Well, we will just draft another in 3 years if this guy doesn't work". That's how trash teams stay trash.

here is a theory. the tampering thing is what drove this pick. lets say the league wants to punish them with a 1st round next year. Here is the theory the league allows the Falcons to void his contract for a lesser penalty, kirk is now a free agent and the Giants sign him since some thought they would Draft QB. instead of Nabers. Penix is more injury prone than Cousins is. He's had two acl surgeries, as well as both shoulders operated on in 6 seasons of college football.
Achilles injuries and acl injuries are on par for the worst injuries to have for athletes. So they're didn't really put in a health backup.

It’s news because they had the eighth pick in the draft. And they are already spending like $50 million a year on Kirk cousins. It’s just head scratching to spend that high of a draft pick on what is effectively an insurance quarterback.
If you are trying to win now, this is not the movie you would make.
People are just puzzled by the ownership and managements decision to waste a draft pick

Its about as smart of a pick as they could have made.
    Seriously.
Cousins wont finish the season out before getting injured. I figure he will miss at least 10 games between the next two years. Meaning they had the need for a solid Backup QB which is what Penix gives you.
Penix will also be learning behind what is basically a lesser version of Cousins with 15% more mobility. So they are clearly training cousins replacement and its Kirks job to lose. Its a damned logical fit.
Im just glad we didnt get him, cause hes a 3rd round talent meaning he WILL now be a bust whereas he would have been a mid pick had he been picked mid rounds like he belongs.
