Allen Edmonds Vs. Beckett Simonon: Shoe Brand Stompdown
On our first Stompdown, we're pitting Allen Edmonds against Beckett Simonon.
    With Allen Edmonds, we get:
    • A Goodyear Welted shoe
    • Made in the USA
    • Price point of about $400 USD
    And from Beckett Simonon:
    • Blake Stitch shoe
    • Ethically handcrafted in Colombia
    • Price point around $200, $160 with the 20% discount using code BU20
    Main Pros of Allen Edmonds
    1. If you like a Goodyear Welted shoe, you'll get that here. A Goodyear Welt makes for a shoe that is more waterproof, which you can resole more easily.
    2. Allen Edmonds offers shoes over US size 13 regular; if you're a 14 triple E like Paul, you can't get Beckett Simonons in your size. Further, for feet ourside Allen Edmonds' usual range of 6A-15EEE, they will make it to order in a few weeks.
    Main Pros of Beckett Simonon
    1. Affordable handcrafted shoe at around $200.
    2. More streamlined styles & lower soles are possible due to Blake construction.
Beckett Simonon is great for expanding your shoe collection with well-made and sleek styles. However, the Blake Stitch leads to a less water-resistant shoe, therefore in wet conditions you may opt for a Goodyear shoe.
Hence, for a first dress shoe like a black captoe Oxford which will see very heavy use, Allen Edmonds is a good choice. Also, slushy conditions like Pennsylvania winters will benefit from Allen Edmonds' Goodyear construction and Dainite soles.
During summer, though, you can enjoy the benefits of a light, streamlined shoe like those from Beckett Simonon.
You might therefore look to get your cornerstone classics from Allen Edmonds, and flesh out your collection with Beckett Simonon.
With this in mind, check out our other resources on shoes (links above) and Allen Edmonds' & Beckett Simonon's respective sites. Again, if you look at Beckett Simonon, remember the code BU20 for a 20% discount.
REMEMBER to comment! We'd love to hear what you think of Beckett Simonon and Allen Edmonds. Otherwise, feel free to suggest new videos and articles we can make!

I really enjoyed your video you guys are great. I've been wondering about Beckett, so it's nice to see some comparisons. They have nice styling at a very good price.

I've got big feet so I'm Allen Edmonds all the way, doesn't hurt that I can drive to their factory store and the tent sale. With the slush and mud the leather soles wore out soon enough, and I'm not use to wearing slippery shoes like that and took a tumble down the carpeted stairs, so all rubber soles from now on. Usually a 14eee but a 15d Sanford fits perfectly so I'm going to buy a few 15 tennis shoes as well. Good video and subbed your channel.

Thanks, Jeff! Yes, that's perfectly understandable. Paul is with you for the same reasons. By the way, I highly recommend the Dainite soled Allen Edmonds. They're very hard-wearing and grip even in icy conditions. Paul's got a few pairs including the Sullivan Street boot (on the table) and I've the Dalton brogue boot (which is seen in the inserts) as well as a Strandmok brogue. They're excellent workhorses and my choice shoes in poor wintertime weather conditions.
      Best,
      CP

Very informative. The biggest surprise for me was that I thought you guys were reporting from London or somewhere in the UK, and it turns out you're right here in Northeast Philly!

Haha, yes! These days Paul spends his time between London and Philly but it used to be mostly the latter. I'd fly over and join him to do a batch of videos together every now and then. Otherwise, if it's just me, I'm likely in France. But you can start to expect videos from London soon!
      Best,

I’m in Texas and a size 13 regular width, and I understand more people get paid outside the AE company included in the overall price and don’t mind waiting for custom made shoes. Guess who I’m going with?

  • @rafneeby1892

You reviewed the welts but not the shoes. So am I to assume that both those brands are great shoes? You both spoke around a true comparison. Not a peep about the kind of leather used, heel construction or the last offer. Not to mention you cannot compare a boot to a shoe, apples, and oranges thing. But I like the idea of a stomp down. I am a Carmina shoe guy so I use their brother company Meermin for my basic collection. Why not do a Meermin / Becket Simonon comparison, or Carmina / becket simonon comparison or a Meermin against their brother company Meermin? BTW, many people have Goodyear construction on their dress shoes. Meermin at the exact same price range as Becket Simonon uses good year construction. I'm a Drexel Hill guy just giving my two cents. Like the show!

Allen Edmonds Factory Second or Beckett Simonon? I’m a student looking to just get one oxfords. Opinions?

    • @Bespokeunit
      @Bespokeunit  Před 3 lety

      Hey Jon,
      Thanks for the question.
I think both are good options for a quality shoe for the price.
I have a bunch of AE seconds (from many years ago) that were perfect for me. I have heard the quality has slipped though, but only from second hand sources. Also they may not have your size in seconds
I think BS will be a bit cheaper, but the only downside will be you'll need to wait for several weeks to get them. Use code "BU20" to get 20% off on these.
Best of luck. Cheers - Paul

Bespoke Unit Thanks! Another question- as a student, I’m only looking to get one pair for everyday wear for about 5 years of college. However, I am thinking of getting a dark brown or mahogany color so at least I will have something looking different from the rest of the students. (The dress code calls for formal shoes) In terms of versatility, would you recommend a dark or tobacco brown or a mahogany or ox blood kind of brownish red? (Taking Saphir Creme colors as reference) Or what color would you recommend?

Bespoke Unit Hello! I just saw your review on wolf and shepherd and noticed they are having a sale now where their prices are at $200 which match that of Allen Edmonds Factory seconds, considering what you said in your other video would you recommend I buy those instead since I will likely be walking around college campus in them? Thanks!

      Dear Carlos,
      Thank you for your comments.
We believe Beckett Simonon offers great value (big downside is you have to wait, where you can get AE right away!). Not only that AE quality has slipped in recent times.
Also some people prefer Blake over Goodyear.
      Cheers - Paul

Improvement since when? They had a shaky start when they were founded for the first few years. They're hardly the same shoes since they moved production from Spain to Colombia.

I own several pairs and I am very satisfied with all of them. I have returned more Allen Edmonds than Beckett Simonons. You can't compare them to Carminas but at the $160 price point I can't think of any other brands that beat the value.

Allen Edmunds are no longer worth $400. I switched to Becket Simonon for the quality improvement.
