  • Sure, it might not have been the classiest show on television but it most certainly left its mark. 3rd Rock From The Sun was one of the most anomalous sitcoms in television's history. It became known for its unique blend of lewd humor and physical comedy but it also featured a gifted and prolific cast that garnered the show a great deal of critical acclaim right out of the gate.
3rd Rock From The Sun ran from 1996 to 2001 on NBC and starred John Lithgow, French Steward, Kristen Johnston, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as four out-of-this-world intergalactic travelers from a star system on the board of Cepheus-Draco posing as humans in the fictional town of Rutherford, Ohio while working alongside humans that were completely oblivious to their secret.
Seeing as the series is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, it only seems appropriate that we share with you 12 little-known facts about the award-winning series that you probably never knew about. This video is going to take you on a little intergalactic journey to reveal some of the biggest secrets lurking in 3rd Rock's past.

Third Rock remains one of the funniest, cleverest and most innovative sitcoms ever produced. As for its reliance on so-called 'low comedy,' it's bluenose detractors would do well to remember that Shakespeare, the greatest Western playwright of all time, is often similarly criticized.

I injoyed it I wish they would have a reunion show that would be cool . NBC should off put it on the 9:00 slot and left it alone it would have been ok . It a lot better then the crap they are showing now.

The show made such great fun of the human condition. It showed Humans at their most basic, which turned out to be hilariously funny. I was a big fan when the show aired on prime time and enjoying it just as much now while binge watching. This is comic genius!

Probably one of the best comedies of our time!! I'm fighting cancer & watching all of the shows has me laughing so hard it HURTS!! It's the best medicine when you're in need!! I have to be careful when I'm drinking something during a show.. I've had a couple accidents, like tea shooting out of my nose!! Especially when French, would do something completely OFF THE WALL!! I love the fact that you took the time to put this together. I'm very grateful for all of you folks that put together all of the bloopers & gag reels as well... Thanks

The fact that it broke all the “rules” for TV in its day made it truly an outstanding sitcom. The premise of the show was genius, literally an open floor plan for looking at life, all the stupid stuff we do, in a totally naïve way. The acting was superb, they really complimented each other.

This one one of the first sitcoms I remember getting into as a kid. I rewatched it as an adult when it was on Netflix in 2015, and one episode where Dick learns about feelings, he says to his class "You just sit around worried about what everyone else is thinking of you while you're all blissfully unaware of the vaporizing meteor due in 2015!!!!!..." 😳😳😳".........which doesn't exist because I'm kiiiiiddiiiiing"

This was far from "low brow" or "lewd". It is easy I suppose to miss the frequent use of subtext, cultural references, classic theater techniques, and so on if you just take it on the surface level. The humor was always hitting on multiple meanings. The acting and comedic timing was unparalleled on TV. Extra points to the writers for incorporating many complex and sensitive social issues into the scripts and to the actors for handling them delicately and yet infusing the words with great comic skill.

I never watched until just recently. My husband and me have been watching from the pilot and are now in the middle of season 2. This show is hilarious! People who complain about it are the pseudo PC crowd. It's certainly not deep but the crazy and often very PCINcorrectness is what is laugh out loud outrageous! Love it! I don't think I would have felt the same way back when it was first on. I honestly don't know how they managed to tape an episode without the actors keeping a straight face! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ironically, I didn't consider their humor "low brow" because it was so well done. Humor is akin to fashion in that some things that are unusual looking last while the copies fade into non-existence.
I still remember the "jello" skit as one of the funniest scenes on TV (right up there with Murphy Brown in labor). Sally as cook making meatballs (You mean I have dead cow on my hands!) or bringing out the turkey on Thanksgiving with the frazzled look many of us have lived are still funny.

They were always on the edge of presenting something that could easily fall on its face and be totally stupid if not done right but they always ended up doing it better than right. They took chances and nailed it over and over again. Easily one of the bet sitcoms of all time.

One of my favorite shows ever. I wish it could have kept going but it had to be difficult to keep the level of writing as strong it was. One thing I never hear mention of was the thought that went into the characters names, specifically the three men. What I understood from something I read years back, the concept was to have three aliens that blended in as much as possible. The thought was that they should be seen simply as any Tom, Dick, and Harry. And that, in my opinion was simply genius!

Stupendously good, it was a composite of surrealism, clever word play, silliness and thoughtful social observation. All the characters bounced off each other so well, and brought nuance and suitability for their parts. Probably my favourite part was that 3D dream of Sally's where she had the world brought to her on a plate, literally, and she shot Don as he was really a chicken, because it's funny but psychologically accurate. Also Dicks facial expressions, like a very screwed up Humpty Dumpty egg! Nina was great as well, her smiles and exasperation at Dick.
Harry was my favourite, he reminded me of Buster Keaton, slim, handsome and childlike, and that funny eye screwed tight thing and his funky dancing!
I'm rewatching it now on Channel 4 as I haven't seen it since I was in my twenties, and it's every bit as bonkers and clever as I remember.
