      That word might as well have been a bullet shot straight into the heart of his career. The man has absolutely fallen off the face of the planet since then only making one sad pathetic appearance on comedians in cars where he looked like the world had been punching him in the face for the better part of a decade. I mean Mel Gibson is still out here and he is much worse I would say by definition. Then again Mel Gibson mostly has the good sense to keep his face behind the camera most of the time.

      It doesnt take someone working in TV to realise thats the exact route they couldve and shouldve taken for a safer bet of success, I mean why waste time inventing a new character who does much the same schtick when they couldve just spun off Kramer and Newman as bumbling PI's which they both express a wish of doing in the stakeout episode of Seinfeld. This is why most people's favorite actors never become leading men. There's a huge difference between stealing the show with a few great scenes and having to carry the show for 30 minutes. Kramer was my favourite character because he would just appear out of nowhere and deliver a line that would steal the whole scene. I never for one minute thought that following him around for thirty minutes would be a good idea.

This literally just looks like Kramer doing Kramer things for 20 minutes every episode. If Seinfeld didn't exist, a show like Veep or The New Adventures of Old Christine, or a movie like Enough Said could still be made. One of the things that made Kramer’s character so engaging is that, when he wasn’t making pratfalls, he could actually be something of a smooth operator. He’d get so convinced of his delusions that he’d actually draw other people into them. A detective show that emphasized that aspect of Richardson’s talent, as an unorthodox, but fast-talking, quick-on-his-feet PI, would’ve been a great new direction for the actor while still honoring his Seinfeld roots. But the studio stepped in, pushed for pratfalls, and we ended up with this steaming pile of pointlessness, instead.

    I see two paths that could have given The Michael Richards Show a chance of success. It could have had Richards play a character that was legitimately different from Kramer, or it could have gone all in and made it a Kramer show. Instead, it tried to forge a path between those two options.

    • @suedenim
      @suedenim Před 3 lety +15

      Yeah. No that it was a ratings success, but the Andy Richter Show was a good example of how the comedy detective angle could have worked.
      If they had gone "full Kramer," that also might have worked, but I also wonder if Kramer shenanigans would get tiresome as the central focus of an episode or series. The Kramer character worked well on Seinfeld in part because he usually wasn't the center of things, and the rest of the show had a different comedic emphasis (e.g. not so much physical comedy.)

    • @BainesMkII
      @BainesMkII Před 3 lety +20

      @@suedenim As you say, all Kramer all the time would wear thin fast, and the show would need a good supporting cast and writers that knew how to handle the balance. Still, I think the good will benefit given to "It's Kramer from Seinfeld" would have seen it through a season, though its ceiling was probably not much further. Two, maybe three seasons if the cast and writers both gelled and the network milked Seinfeld character guest appearances.
      I think the other path, a completely different character, would have a harder time for its first season but would also have the better long term prospects if it did survive.

    It’s cool you’re doing a video about this, since this is a show I’ve heard about, but never saw so it’s cool to know more about it. Sounds like there was a lot of potential for this show, but from the clips and what you’ve laid out, the network wanted it to basically be Kramer as a detective. Makes me wonder what would have happened had this show been made the way the writers and people involved wanted it to be made in the first place. Perhaps it could have gone on for multiple seasons rather than ending after just one. I really love this channel and the content you put out on it. Keep up the great work!

    Great Video as always, Joe! I find Michael Richards to be as tragic a figure as any comedic actor. He had one PERFECT role, and spent the rest of his career chasing it with pale imitations. By the time of the unfortunate standup incident, I think he was just worn down and angry at himself for how poorly he'd managed after Seinfeld. Nobody who knows him seems to think that he really has bigoted feelings towards people of color; they seem convinced he was feeling so low about himself and his career that the heckling was a last straw that broke him.
    The episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with him nearly made me cry. He truly was a gifted physical comedian, and it's a shame he only had one role that allowed him to share that talent.
