      because this problem isn't just in "grievance studies" but in most social sciences.
      when i was getting my degree i wasn't allowed to have an original thought, what i mean by that is i came up with a an idea for my capstone based on my own personal experiences/observations but i was told i could not use those in my paper and instead had to find some other scholarly work that reaffirmed what i already knew and had to cite them instead of myself. i had to give credit to other people for concepts formed in my own mind.
      All liberal arts are incestuous and self-referential in a way that it's used to justify it's own continued existence

      @@aarondesch What you described is plagiarism and thank god is exists in every sceintific domain, speaking as an engineer. Even if you find an idea alone, without the help of anyone (something that happens a lot to me) you still need to give the credits to the guy that did it before you. We cannot reinventing the wheel every Tuesday.
      Now if you are saying that your theory, was not publiced anywhere else so you could not find any sources, assuming that this highly unlikely case to be true, that a way to introduce your own concept and get a paper out of it, with your proper experiments and discussion of past related works.

      @@mariosx12 I understand plagiarism and an idea i came up with is not plagiarism EVEN if somebody else has had similar ideas before. I understand using them to back up my idea, what i don't like is being told to give them credit for my idea.

      "This is what i saw happen and why i think it happened based off of my knowledge of the situation and it is backed up by X, Y, and Z" and "This what i think because of X, Y, and Z"

      @@mariosx12 we can't re-invent the wheel every Tuesday, sure, but if you found Tarzan in the jungle and he fashioned a rudimentary wheel out of a log would you not give credit where it was due?

    • @mariosx12
      @mariosx12 Před 5 lety +6

      @@aarondesch I will sound a bit harsh, but trust me I am doing it with the best intentions, since I know that feeling at first place, (even worse of having some papers stealing the idea from mine without credits):
      NONE cares in academia about your feelings, about what you found and how, or what was your motivation (the last one at least to some degree). The academia cares only about how what you found relates to our collective knowledge as a human species. This is the difference bettween being an "amateur" researcher and a "professional" researcher.
      None cares if Tarzan came up with the wheel, when we have already F1 and airplanes. It will not change our lives that Tarzan came up with the wheel at any level. If you are trying to publish an idea that relates a lot in a previous one in the past that's on you for not having the proper knowledge of the related work, which is extremely negative if you consider yourself an active researcher.
      Imagine a first grader solving a homework and finding by himself that "2+2=4". Should we congratulate him? Well yeah for positive reinforcement. Should his discovery be considered original by academia and get the credits? Well, sorry for braking his dreams but for sure not.
      Now to answer more clearly to your specific problem, not giving credits for your idea to other researchers, gives the strong impression that you were not familiar with their work, which is highly non-professional. By claiming that you got these ideas from their work (even if it's a lie) shows that you are following the entire field very closely, paying attention to the work of the others in real time. I hope that my perspective helped a bit.

      @Rickard Eriksson Yes, this is the seriousness of the problem I've noticed for years. There's no compass, no scripture, nothing hard and definitive about the ideology found in grievance studies. It's nebulous, self-serving, and seemingly changes based on shifting attitudes of various groups and organizations that have overlapping social and political interests. The serious problem is you cannot point to anything, like God or a holy book, and criticize it. This infestation is rotting the very core principles of reasoning and sociology, and when you consider how gender is being questioned we're really fighting with people who seem intent on reinterpreting everything that is human and establishing new measures, and all but removing our ability to even debate these ideas.

    This is the email I am sending. Feel free to send it yourself if you can't/don't want to write your own. We must fight for Peter.
    To whom it may concern:
    I am writing this letting on behalf of Peter Boghossian regarding his hearing with the IRB for an alleged ethics violation. The alleged violation stems from the investigative studies he conducted within what could be called the "grievance studies" disciplines in the university system. The point of his exercise was to expose the lack of true scholarship, showing that if a paper falls within a certain ideological framework, that certain journals will publish the work, even if the research is not scientific and/or accurate.
    Your university can try to sweep this under the rug by labelling what Dr. Boghossian did as unethical, and there may be a kernel of truth to that, but you are vastly missing the big picture here. What Dr. Boghossian exposed is a clear example of anti-intellectual dogma that is being touted as quality research, and more importantly is being taught to impressionable minds. If Dr. Boghossian is disciplined, or removed from his position, there will be overwhelming negative publicity, and the integrity of your school will be seriously called into question. Remember what happened when Missouri University had negative press due to their capitulation to the activist disciplines; parents stopped sending their kids there, and the university lost a lot of money.
    www.columbiatribune.com/news/20170515/university-of-missouri-enrollment-to-decline-more-than-7-percent-400-jobs-to-be-eliminated
    "The university has studied the issue and now sees that it is almost all due to negative publicity since the demonstrations, said Pelema Morrice, vice provost for enrollment. 'It is clear from what we learned thus far that the vast majority of our undergraduate enrollment concerns are closely tied to our public perception issues throughout the state and throughout the country,' he said."
    Please do not discipline Dr. Boghossian. You must allow the very fair criticism of the grievance studies departments to continue. The truth will always win, and Dr. Boghossian has the truth on his side. You cannot silence these concerns forever.

Indeed.

      @@dobrodave123 Why place either of those things in quotation marks, as if they don't exist or should not be taken seriously?
      Government funded education, health care, research, etc., and subsidies to kick off new businesses are perfectly legitimate and work quite well in much of the west, yet to US conservatives represent the worst thing since Stalin or some infringement on the laws of "the market."
      For example, student debt is a huge issue at the moment. This could be avoided if universities were not allowed/forced to charge usurious tuition fees. Many countries provide complete tuition or assistance and are the better for it. This would provide opportunities to those who wouldn't be able to afford $60 000 USD per year tuition otherwise. As this video shows, there are clearly problems with the modern academy, but in no solution does continuing to charge students burdensome costs to attend seem reasonable.
      Grants to researchers and small business owners can help move beyond fossil fuels, the continued reliance on which by growing populations is and will be a problem. I believe Norway, for example, has helped fund wind power, and such efforts seem quite promising.

      No; the submitted papers used fraudulent data. The editors of the journals trusted in the sincerity of the authors of these papers, and by extension, trusted in the integrity of the data presented in these submitted papers. Why wouldn't they? The authors are highly educated academics and the quality of the writing was exceptional and comparable to other published papers. I think the only points that can possibly be made are that the journal editors "should have recognized" at the outset that the topics and hypotheses of these research papers were ludicrous and satirical, and that should have prompted them to dig deeper. However, that is a subjective opinion. Simply because I interpret something as satire and dubious does not mean the next person should as well. So that argument is weak. The stronger point/argument is that the journal editors should have done due diligence and verified the data, but perhaps confirmation bias took over. .

    • @Aa-we9uz

How could they trust in people that did not exist as you say? They were not highly educated academics. They were made-up people with made-up degrees, with some with fake degrees from schools that did not even offer that degree. That is the exposure of the fraud. As long as you had the right political view and put in an academic format, literally anyone can get published in these peer-reviewed journals.

      @ryanangelo8392 Před 5 lety +1

      @@Aa-we9uz Thank you. Good point about the names being made up; I was not aware of that. I do agree that the journal editors should have at least verified the authors' names (existence) and current professional positions. And I did mention confirmation bias (the tendency to favor information that conforms to one's pre-existing beliefs or theories), which would align with your belief about the right political view. Furthermore, from what I have seen, the papers were well-written and presented persuasive arguments (notwithstanding the underlying, questionable hypotheses), which may have contributed to the favorable response they received from the journals. However, I don't agree that this problem is confined to humanities ("grievance studies").

      “Perhaps confirmation bias took over”???
      I’m not sure if you deleted your comment to me, but I can’t find it. This calls into question anything they have accepted in the past. This is how scientific peer reviewed journals work. It is how you can identify bogus journals compared to scientific journals on lets say Climate Change for example. I’m not saying it calls for questioning their entire publishings, but certainly anyone involved in publishing these it has to go back to when these people got on board. Yes, that is how far back this calls journals into question. If the journals integrity is in question, you have to burn it with fire or the entire thing can be questioned. Plain and simple, trying to publish bullshit is a surefire way to know if a journal is worth a damn, and presently, their journal isn’t worth dick. The reason they even thought to do this, is because it is a common way for one to find out if a journal has any credibility. They are not the first group of people to try this, and they for sure will not be the last. One guy submitted to a journal “take me off your fucking mailing list” as the entire submission. He made it look like authentic and it was accepted.
      Can you please explain why you wouldn’t arrive at this conclusion?

    Investigative journalism and freedom of expression is how I'd define the valiant actions of Peter Boghossian and friends. Surely every academic has the right to engage in investigative journalism or do academics automatically forfeit their human rights to freedom of expression?
    Furthermore, infiltration is an accepted tool of investigative journalism, yet this wasn't even infiltration, just a gentle knocking at the door to see if they'd be let in. And in that, this was not about exposing human frailty, but about testing the standards and scientific security measures of the respective academic journals. As is now the PC fashion, the puritans have decided to classify this as an attack on human dignity rather than an expose of poor scientific standards. Attacking the person is their way of silencing any form of dissent.
    My thoughts are with them as they face these stifling puritanical inquisitions that aim to destroy people. Keeping fingers crossed for them.
