- This was a great film and a worthy sequel. Stallone’s writing and this time around, directing, really impressed me. Talia Shire was even better in her role as Adrian in the sequel. I would consider this an extension to the first film and it is mandatory viewing for any film lover!

"Yo Adrian, I did it'
Me crying like a baby!
I don't think he "did it" though? His hand was still holding the rope at the count of 10, pretty sure it's a double count out draw.
@@ckobo84 You must be the soul in a party....
@@matiasdimter619 lmao
Apollo is certainly an antagonist for Rocky but he was never a straight-up villain. And I always appreciated that decision. Even when his ego's bruised and he's emotionally hurt, he wants the rematch for the perfect reason. "I won, but I didn't **beat** him". And Carl Weathers does a wonderful job of conveying just how hurt Apollo is, and how hard he's trying to hide it.
Burgess Meredith's monologue in the chapel is one of the great underrated monologues. He expresses so much in his bearing, expressions and tone that the words just leave unsaid. He's got tremendous respect for Rocky. And he wants the best for him. But he rather acknowledges that he might not know just what that is. Which is why he chooses to stick by Rocky, blown opportunity or not. Win or lose, stand or fall. And that relationship continues and grows in Rocky III.
Completely agreed with everything you said Daniel!
Burgess Meredith was an excellent character. It's hard to decide which is as best role ever. It's either the rocky franchise or the grumpy old men franchise.
"He needs to keep his hands up." Lol...Rocky always blocks with his face!
I was thinking the same thing.
😂😂😂😂😂
He was trying to break his hands. A shrewd technique
I would try to take down 3 crocodiles if Adrian told me "win" like that. Gets me everytime.
And gods know that come hell or high water you would do it dammit.
The same happens to me every time. Since i was 9 years old, i cry every time i heard her saying that
Hell yeah. Her delivery of the second “win” comment is incredible and would fire up pretty much any man.
The ending isn't just the perfect culmination of the 2 hours in this film but the perfect culmination of the entire 4 hours of the 1st two movies combined.
Paulie was right, she was holding him back in the sense that he NEEDED her to back him and support him cause that's how much he loves her and needs her. Her not backing him made him feel like he was doing wrong when deep down he knew this is his calling, to be a fighter. Now the way Paulie handled it in the pet store was totally wrong. Once she gave him her support, THEN and only then could he truly put all he had into training and focus on the fight at hand.
You gotta see Rocky 3 next! Clubber Lang is the GOAT
Yes!
Best part of Rocky 3, closing scene with Apollo Creed!
Clubber is my favorite character in the whole series
Agreed!!! It's a great one!
I prefer the first two. The third and fourth concentrated too much on the 'villains' and the action (and politics in Rocky IV).
Yet another great film. In the first film, Rocky gets the ending that he wanted by going the distance against Creed. In this film, the audience gets the ending they wanted to see in the first film.
One of the things I love about these films is that even after multiple installments, they manage to keep the audience invested in the characters.
The first Rocky was one of the very first few sports movies the protagonist doesn't actually win.
I'm so invested I want to watch them all!
Minus 5. We don't talk about 5.
does "going the distance" means , try something like a shot in the dark with high rewards and high risks? or something like thaT?
@@zoiuduu Going the distance, in this case, is making it through all the rounds of boxing without getting KO'd. You went the distance.
If you’ve not seen Cop Land, Stallone’s acting is showcased there as well!
Excellent film, one of Stallone's best performances.
Cop Land is an underappreciated gem with a really good cast. Stallone does an awesome job in it.
Great movie, I thought his acting was so understated and he made smart choices with the character. Really good movie.
I haven't watched Cop Land yet. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll add it to the list Matt!
Cop Land is an excellent movie! I only recently watched it for the first time. I don’t know how it got passed me. A definite watch Shan, great acting from Stallone.
That was Stallone’s brother, Frank, singing in the street.
Part 1 also and even 3
He also sings in Paradise Alley (1978)
Thanks for the trivia! had no idea!
The end still makes me cry even watching this.
Rocky's situation in this mirrors what a lot of working class fighters went through. Not having experience with having so much cash after a big fight, they wind up wasting it on frivolous spending like fast cars instead of investing, or saving it. Same with they're fame.
Another thing, Mick's implied to be Jewish, so him staying with Rocky in a Catholic church during his despair gets some extra levels of heartwarming.
That's Stallone's brother singing by the barrel fire. The one in the lather jacket facing the camera, with very similar lip movements as his brother Sylvester.
This made me jump for joy literally.
Can't wait for Rocky 3 now.
Thank you guys! Going to watch 3 for sure!
@@ShanWatchesMovies plan on doing 4 as well. Lol
This was a joy of a reaction to watch. I've watched this film a billion times since I was a kid and seeing someone get so much out of it and gasping and looking agonized and tense at all the right moments was great.
Thank you but even more than that THANK YOU for taking time out of your day to watch :)
Hehe you kept calling Paulie "Mickey" xD
Ooops!
9:36 I think Stallone still has those turtles. He’s been amazed how long they live.
It's been a while since I've seen Rocky III & IV but as I recall I walked out of the theater without a single bit of disappointment for having seen them. You should continue the series.
I will Bob
When Paulie says "break her teeth" I'm fairly sure he was being hyperbolic, not literal.
Win” then the bell sounds that’s a goosebumps moment the best
My dads favorite part
What the hell are we waiting for!!!
They play that clip in the beginning of every Eagles game in Philly. It always pumps the crowd up
A few interesting facts about Rocky 2 : Mirroring his on-screen motor habits, Stallone actually bought the black and gold 1979 Pontiac Trans Am he's seen splashing out on in the film. Over 800 local school children were used as extras for the end of that montage scene. When Rocky spars in Mickey’s Gym with a smaller, quicker fighter - his opponent is real-life boxing champion Roberto Duran. During the fight, Apollo Creed wears the same red and white shorts seen on the overhead banner being worn by Rocky during their first bout. Just a few cute behind the scenes things.
I will have to say since I have been following you I realize there is someone else besides me that appreciate what movies can give as far as emotions go. I love your take and how elegant you are describing what it brought to you! I find you are pretty spot on! Stay safe!
Thank you so much Dionne. Music, movies and books have the ability to bring tears to my eyes :)
@@ShanWatchesMovies I agree, I have had to put books down because I cried so hard!
"Win. Win!" cue the music and training montage, let's goooooooooooooooo
that moment gets me every time, without fail
Rocky III is well worth the watch, it's a fan favorite and was hugely popular when it was released! Apollo's character is more developed in it as I recall.
Apollo: “Ain’t gonna be no rematch!”
Rocky: “Don’t want one.”
5 minutes later...
💯 how it happens though
When Adrian says, "win...", and you hear the chimes hit that note, wow. what a perfect moment. I still get chills.
I really loved your reaction to this! I hope you'll do Rocky 3 as well!
I will Michelle!
@@ShanWatchesMovies woohoo! I'm looking forward to it :)
Carl Weathers was in amazing and beautiful shape. He moved like a cat.
13:35 you should watch Burgess Meredith in THE TWILIGHT ZONE “TIME ENOUGH AT LAST” and “THE OBSOLETE MAN.”
I like how Adrian is slowly coming out of her shell. Great character build up they did with her
Rocky III is a must now. The best part is that now we don't have to wait years to watch it.
Colin Trevorrow said he directed the dinosaur fight at the end of "Jurassic World" based off of Stallone's rematch fight in "Rocky II," which Trevorrow considers to be the best boxing scene in film history.
The guy with the leather coat singing at the trash can is Frank Stallone ... his brother. He sings in many of his movies
Take you back, do do do do, take you back
I also love how Apollo is more driven to face Rocky to prove that he's the better man. Carl Weathers is awesome!
Fun trivia:After the bell rings, signaling the end of the second round, Sylvester Stallone and Carl Weathers are seen pushing, shoving, taunting, and ultimately being pulled apart by their respective cornermen. They continue to taunt each other before returning to their corners. Stallone revealed later they were actually angry with each other and were not acting at that point, several blows that were supposed to miss him landed and the carefully choreographed fight, which they spent months meticulously planning out, went off-track during that scene, but he liked the reaction the scene produced. He decided to leave their momentary breaking of character in and the viewing audience never realized the two actors were in reality quite livid with each other.
Fun trivia:It took Sylvester Stallone and editors Danford B. Greene and Stanford C. Allen over eight months to edit the climatic fight scene so as to meet Stallone's
Fun trivia:At the end of the rematch, Rocky knocks Apollo down, and then falls to the canvas with him simultaneously after following through on the punch he lands. The announcers both mentioned the first to get up would be the winner, and if neither of them had gotten up, it would have been a draw and Apollo would have kept the title. While the latter is true, the Champion does retain the title if the decision is a draw, that would never have happened if it had been a real fight. Since Rocky slipped, fell, and knocked Apollo down, Rocky would have been declared the winner because he knocked Apollo down and stumbled to the canvas rather than being knocked down by Apollo. Even though he got up first, Rocky's falling to the canvas would have been ruled a slip, and Rocky would have won by knockout anyway.
Fun trivia:In one version of the screenplay, there is a flashback scene that shows Rocky first meeting Mickey and we learn Rocky's real first name: Robert.
Fun trivia:Sylvester Stallone's infant son Seargeoh Stallone played the newborn Robert Balboa, Jr. The role would later be played by his elder brother Sage Stallone in Rocky V (1990).
Another wall of EXCELLENT trivia from mongo the great! Thanks man!

Can’t wait for 3 and 4.
3 is probably 2nd best to 1
yyes, i just saw his review of rocky 1, and he said that bet 1 million dollars that other rockys arent even close to rocky 1 , he lost 3 millions hahah
Talia Shire (Adrian) is the sister of Francis Ford Cappola who directored ( THE GODFATHER), she also played Connie Corleone. Talia is also the great aunt of Nicolas Cage.
He still owns those turtles after 35-40 years!
I appreciate how insightful your comments are, truly much more than mine. I am kind of surprised that you did connect Paley's depending into alcoholism with the success of his sister. He was alway the "big brother taking care of his little shy sister." Now he is no longer needed and feels rejected. The only cure, "in his opinion" is to bring his sister back down to a level where she needed him. Which is why he is always degrading her.
Rocky 3 and 4 have a different feel but they're still fun movies with some real high points. In fact I'd say all of the Rocky films (including 5 and Balboa), are good so please stick with them
You actually included one of my favorite lines that everyone else cuts!
Reporter: Rocky, do you think you may have brain damage?
Rocky: I don't see any.
Always laugh my ass off at Sly's line delivery there.
If you like the Rocky montages you'll love Rocky 4.
Rocky 4 was montages with some movie thrown in.
21:20 is the perfect screencap for "what's it like watching Rocky 2?"
Another great reaction. Love this film. Especially when Adrian wakes from her coma and tells Rocky to win. Goosebump fuel.
Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to watch Sherlock!
Mickey is bringing heat at the hospital always makes me laugh. Pure WWF tactics
You thought there might be a Rocky movie without a training montage? It's not a spoiler of the movie, but by the time you get to Rocky IV, 31 minutes of it are montages. It's glorious....
I have seen this so many times, but I think Carl Weathers was my favorite performance. The way he acted and thd attitude in his movements and mannerisms. He sold it as an angry champion.
Rocky is such an endearing character that you can’t help but root for the guy. When he finally wins in the end, we all win, because we all have been underdogs in our lives. We know what that’s about. Few of us have been the world champion at anything...,
Rocky and Frank Drebin went to the same driving school
Apollo is what's called a 'showman'.
@5:20 That's a Pontiac Firebird, also known as the 'Screaming Chicken'. But you might recognize it from Smokey and the Bandit. A film you should 100% react to if you haven't already seen because it's a classic and it's great.
@8:45 "I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before and the man kept coming after you. We don't need that kind of man in our life."
Duke is legit one of the best supporting characters in this whole series.
Thanks man! I haven't watched Smokey and the Bandit yes so I'll add it to the list!
As much as Rocky wanted to take care of Adrien it seemed like she took care of him she protected him from the World that took advantage of the fact the Rock wasn't the fastest upstairs
The last I heard, Stallone still has those turtles. This news is just a few years old.
Im so happy you did this sequel so soon. I think youre going to be really impressed with how it still stands alone as a great movie in and of itself as well as being a great sequal to another epic movie in the franchise. People are so wrong when they assume these are action films as they are actually deep dramas and written and directed with S-tier quality.
I'm going to watch at least till part 4 and see where it goes from there!
There is an iconic freeze frame in Rocky 3 that everyone loves!
"What favor?"
In Philly right before an Eagles game starts, they play that clip of Adrian saying "win", followed by the training montage. It always hypes the crowd up somethin crazy
Another great review. Small trivia note, one of the guys in the guys singing outside is Stallone’s brother Frank Stallone who played a boxer in Rocky 3 and has performed a lot of songs in Stallone’s films in the 80s.
I think you’d also like this lesser-known Stallone movie: “PARADISE ALLEY” (1978) ...which, for a lower budget movie, I’d endorse as average-to-above average. Worth watching, very enjoyable.
I really do Recommend The Movie Red Sonja if liked Conan. And Original Beastmaster.
Are you kidding? Red Sonya is even worse than Conan the Destroyer which at least had some comedy and cheese factor.
Unfortunately, Schwarzenegger never went back to Conan with another decent movie honoring that character. Which is a shame as he had that perfect, classic physique for Conan which today's bodybuilders lost a long time ago. I simply can't imagine another actor playing Conan.
Arnie should have played old king Conan years ago and handed over the torch to another Cimmerian like Grogor the grunting Pict slayer.
@@berniem.6965
Destroyer > Barbarian
Beastmaster 💪🏾
@@berniem.6965 Its a matter of opinion. I liked his character better in Red Sonja then in Conan. Im more serious about Beastmaster really.
"Dude be careful there's a lot of people around you and you're a horrible driver Rocky"....😂😂😂😂😂😂👍
“Rocky do you think you have brain damage?”
“I don’t see any”
Absolutely brilliant. Under appreciated how funny these films are
Hello there, Shan. Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your reactions. They seem genuine, with a keen, analytical filmmakers eye.
More than that, you’re not hyperbolic. Overly noisy for the sake of attracting clicks.
Also, I’m sure there are 1001 folks who have already stated it, I just couldn’t find it in the comment section. But the street performer that Rocky always passes is actually portrayed by his brother, Frank.
Fun fact for the first movie. The poster where Rocky talks about them not having his right colors really did happen which is why they added the scene
***YES YES YES*** It is hard to watch ROCKY fight because even armatures like us know GET YOUR HANDS UP PROTECT YOURSELF
Another comment said it best: Rocky defends with not his arms but his face 😂
Rocky is a slugger, Creed is an outside fighter. Watch the Muhammad Ali vs Joe Fraizer fight which was the model for both Rock and Creed. You'll get why he shoot that fight like that. 70's boxing was lot different from todays.
I love this one as a sequel - we already had the amazing story and perfect beats of the first Rocky, so I see it as just fine that this one cranks up the melodrama and gives us the sugar-sweet picture perfect ending. It's kind of the "what if the first one, but Disney" way of doing it. Stallone also shows he has talent not just with writing and not just with acting but with directing too, he's competent and has some artistic style too (that sort of tracking shot behind Creed's head during the fight was fantastic). That Bill Conti score also somehow got better too, shit is legendary.
This movie took a couple of things from the first movie that were just necessities in that one and turned them into series staples - Rocky having an iron jaw (for non-boxing fans, meaning it's near impossible to knock him out) and the montage scene being of the utmost necessity. It also cements Apollo Creed as being completely important to the character of Rocky - he's the foil for him in a multitude of ways, not just professionally but socially with a completely different personality that is cocky and brash but competent and smart and, in the end, humbled and accepting instead of pouty and mean. I love his character, he's strong and unapologetic about who he is, and he's Rocky's adversary but he's not his enemy.
Rocky III isn't as good as II but it's different enough and leans hard enough into the things that become series staples that I find it fun in almost a B-movie sort of way, in that it's not amazing but it's entertaining as hell (and Mr. T!!!). Rocky IV is like that too but just leans COMPLETELY into the camp and has the absolute best training montage of any movie ever in the history of anything. It's ridiculous and over the top but I love it so much, Rocky IV is probably my personal favorite after the first one just because of it being just jacked up to 11.
You could skip 5 and not only would you not notice, you would probably be better off for it. But then Rocky Balboa (part 6, technically) is a beautiful way to close the book on Rocky as a main character before he would eventually be back in Creed.
Stallone really understood what the audiences wanted in these sequels and I think they're great movies to watch on the channel if you have the time despite what I'm assuming is a giant backlog of movies you have to get through. Another great reaction from my man Shan.
Thank you so much for watching as usual X! I'll keep watching the films since I'm invested in these characters way too much at this point. Unfortunately I've already watched the Creed films but I might just review them too.
Oh and the rest of the insights/trivia were a delight to read!
Stallone tore his pec during filming and they wrote in the right handed style to work with it. Talia Shire was also committed to another project and so she couldn't be at the fight. They did the scenes with her and Paulie watching the fight in post production.
Can't wait for Rocky 3 that's my favourite
Coming soon my friend!
Sly's brother Frank Stallone was one of the singers around the barrel fire when Rocky was carring Adrian right after they got married!
Shan, my hubby and I love watching your reactions.... you are so thoughtful! Thanks for taking away my boredom!
The best part of the whole film for me was the moment Rocky falls into his trainer's arms, exhausted from the fight. The acting is so good in this movie.
Great review as always man! I always seen this film as commentary from Stallone as a lot of people thought he just "got lucky" with the success of the first Rocky. Im glad he was able to prove them wrong, he should be seen as more than just an action star.
Thanks for the kind words man!
The film is a great metaphor for Stallone's own life. The fact that you can repeat your success and you're not a one trick pony!
You are hands down my favorite reviewer of the Rocky franchise, excellent job!
The jazz version of the Rocky theme with the ambulance driving through the streets of Philadelphia circa 1980 is one of my favorite scenes of the whole franchise.
Talia Shire had to work on another project during filming of this movie. Stallone finished it without her and a few weeks later she came back and filmed the scenes with her watching the fight on television with Paulie. That's the main reason she wasn't at the fight, but it was very convenient they had the excuse of her recovering from being in the coma and giving birth as well as needing to stay home with the baby. If you notice the scenes just before the fight, when Stallone is holding his son and then putting him down, then leaving to go to the fight, Adrian isn't in those.
My opinion is that the next two movies are great...only not in the same way as the first two. Rocky III and IV are popcorn movies and fun, with a little drama but they are not drama movies. If you think you can handle this franchise going through a change in tone, music (mostly in IV for that) filming style, a kind of a shift in reality in the next two movies I say definitely watch them. Again, it's not a change from good to bad, just a change from excellent films to fun movies.
Best Regards!!!
Thanks Shan for sharing your thoughts and reaction always a joy too see your honest joy when Rocky wins , check out Burgess Meredith in probably the most Iconic “Twilight Zone “ from that series, thanks again
That's my all time favorite episode of Twilight Zone, "Time Enough At Last". Meredith is tremendous in it.
Thanks for the kind words and I'll Google Meridith's other works too!
Rocky 3 and 4 are awesome as well. Maybe not as much as the first 2, but they have different challenges to overcome and it goes more towards a David vs Goliath kind of story. Rocky 3 follows the same path pretty much. Something goes wrong, he doesnt really want to fight, get pushed by the people he loves, training montage, nice end fight. As for Rocky 4, it's a little different. Both movies are totally awesome for anyone who loves boxing. They are a must watch for anyone who loved the first movies.
Rocky III and Rocky IV are both very entertaining movies (and Rocky IV is unquestionably the most popular in the series), but there's a noticeable dip in quality from Rocky II. The sequels only get more cartoonish from here -- with the significant exception of Rocky Balboa, which is surprisingly as great as the first two.
I wish that I could recommend skipping straight to Rocky Balboa, but it's difficult to do because of the tight continuity of all these films. I would say to throw caution to the wind and go for it because Rocky Balboa is that damn good.
Did anyone else get an ad in the middle of this video for a product to help men grow their balls or is it just me?
Either way, I’m glad you’re continuing the series!

I've always believed that Carl Weathers could've been a real boxer.
He had the physique for it!
@@ShanWatchesMovies Agreed. He played linebacker in college and pro. So he's definitely has the athleticism. And I love his punching style.
I really enjoy your analysis of these classic great films. I've officially subscribed. Well done!
Another fun fact, Talia Shire wasn't available for filming during the fight scenes so she had to film her scenes later and they came up with the excuse she had to stay home and watch on TV. Stallone says that turned out to be pleasant accidental choice that works for the movie
So glad you’re doing these 🙂
The first Rocky is all time classic. The sequel has its moments and is a worthy sequel, as it relies heavily on the first film for its impact and has resemblance to the character development of the original, which made ROCKY 1 such a great film. After the first 2 films, the series falls apart for me. The acting in III is pretty bad, and at times borders on comedy. The plots get weaker and if you can get past that, it can be an entertaining movie to watch (though not a true film which made the eariler one's better). IV is so short and essentially a 90 minute workout video. It has its moments but lacking a lot of the resemblance of the gritty characters of the original.
The relationships drive the first films which is what the later films lack: Rocky/Adrian, Rocky/Philly community, Adrian/Paulie, Rocky/Mickey... The early films are less about boxing and more about the human condition. It lost that important aspect in later films.
Interesting point. Stallone didn't like the choreography of the fight director they hired for the movie so Sly and Carl choreographed it themselves

Hi Shan. Thank you so much for this reaction. This for me is my favorite ROCKY movie... his character shows so much growth as a person and a boxer . His relationship with Adrian just blooms in this film... from the subtle proposal at the zoo to her coming out of a coma . This film is to me just slightly better than the original and in films it is really rare for me to like a sequel more than an original.
