I love the overall character arc of Apollo Creed in these films. You could see the beginnings when Rocky asked him if he had given him his best-no bravado, no ego, just a straight, honest answer. And when Rocky won, Apollo handed him the belt, raised his hand, and told him he was great.
I love that Apollo isn't portrayed as "the bad guy", but a genuinely good guy, even in the first movie, telling fans to get an education and make something of themselves and not glorify getting beat up for money.
I really think when Rocky says "you lie nice" he's just returning a compliment and people take it the wrong way. He's just referring to her lying in bed.
I love Mick so much. One of the greatest mentor characters ever. Also, unlike other films that force an arc on supporting characters, I like the fact that Paulie stays an a-hole. It’s more true to life. That said, if you keep watching the series he does have his ‘moment’ in the sixth film, which is understated but still very touching. Burt Young was a great actor.
Well, and he does get an arc; it's just a believable arc. He does stay an a-hole, but he becomes a little bit less of an a-hole, or at least an a-hole in different ways. So he gets to change... he just doesn't change into a different person. 👍🏻
one of the most tragic charackters in any movie franchise.... he´s the kind of guy, that is an a-hole through and through... but he would also tear down the white house for the few people he cares about... he just would not show that attachment...
About Adrian changing her mind: You have to realize she wakes up from her coma and then the scene switches to another scene with different lighting and all. There's a jump in time here. We may not know how much time has passed between both scenes but it's easy to imagine it was a few hours. Hours in which Adrian would've found out how long she's been in a coma and the fact that Rocky has given up everything to stay by her side 24/7 until she woke up. Then there's also Paulie's words before she went into a coma. His method may have been the worst, but what he was saying was still the truth: knowing she wasn't okay with this was truely messing up Rocky in a way that could become really dangerous for him. Adrian had to realize the fight was happening whether she liked it or not. She had to realize that she needed to back him up 100% otherwise, all her worst fear would come true. If Rocky wasn't able to train properly, fully focused and fully commited, making him blind may not be the worst thing Apollo would do to him.Put it all together and think that's why she changed her mind. She now understood how much having her backing him up was crucial for Rocky.
I always attributed Adrian's turnaround when she came out of the coma to Rocky being there for her the whole time, reading to her, talking to her, and supporting her over the need to be training. They say people in comas can be aware of the people around them while they are comatose. I always felt that she knew he had given up so much for her, being there like he was that she needed to give him her blessing to get his mind in the right place for the fight.
I always felt Paulie was the reason for her turnaround. The last thing said to her before she went into the coma was Paulie saying that Rocky needs her support, she’s messing up his head and he’s going to get hurt because of you, etc. Paulie convinced her.
@@chazz2342 yes I agree Paulie was the catalyst but I think Rocky’s response to her being in the coma was convincing for her to agree with what Pauline said.
ANY MAN worth his salt... understands, connects, and FEELS this whole franchise on a deep level. It mirrors perfectly the journey through life, from younger to senior years. Absolute perfection
Yes, please do III an IV sooner rather than later. I’m particularly interested in those two because they came out when I was around 9 and 12 when I was just old enough to pay attention. I may have seen the first two on TV prior to that but it would have been way over my head at that age. I think it was around this time that Airplane II made the joke about Rocky 23 or whatever 😅. Anyhow, looking forward to seeing Emily’s take on those. “I feel good. Huah!!”
Burt young the actor playing Paulie died October 19 2023....... He was the only REAL boxer in these movies.......Young served a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959; while in the Marine Corps, he boxed regularly, winning 32 of 34 boxing bouts.
After the first installment, winning all kinds of awards and acclaim, Sly Stallone became a star. Just as he felt poised to prove even more of his career, there was also more to prove for the character of Rocky. The first of 4 sequels that Sly would write and direct. To be lead actor and filmmaker is what he described as 'The Sleepless Job' and it takes a lot to commit to everything. Bigger budget, bigger stakes and bigger challenges. The supporting cast delivers on so much more with theiŕ characters. Pushing the narrative of going the distance and motivation to get a second chance to prove your worth. Just like before, Stallone penned the fight between Rocky & Apollo aka Superfight II (credited as boxing choreographer) and putting this battle on paper with as much substance as the script is genius. Sure it was the end of the 1970s, but ROCKY without a doubt was the cinematic icon you'd never forget. Alongside The Godfather Part 2 (1974) as one of the best sequels of the era. IRL, Stallone had 2 sons and both them have passed away. Both have been Rocky Jr. in the film series. In ROCKY II; Rocky jr. as an baby was Sly's youngest/second son, Seargeoh (1979-1985). After his birth and months before the film's release, the baby's scenes with Rocky & Adrian were the final scenes of filming.
I’ve easily seen this movie 50x and every time he says “Yo Adrian I did it “ tears down my face, Sylvester did an amazing job on putting a lot of heart behind that line.
This is my favorite of the Rocky movies, and a lot of that is down to Mick. He's the greatest. Also, Apollo's trainer Duke is awesome. This is pretty close to the perfect sequel. As you said, the character development is phenomenal. The Rocky-Adrian relationship is fantastic. Great reaction guys. Looking forward to 3 and 4.
There is a fact that I thought you might have said, or maybe you did in the first reaction, but I don't remember hearing you say. Sly's brother Frank is the lead singer of the "neighborhood jukebox" in this and the first one.❤ Always love your reactions, they make my day and much love to Pippin 🐈😻
Stallone said in a interview that he hurt his shoulder while training for the film and that's actually why Rocky had to "switch" to being a right handed fighter.
I use to hate the 3rd movie but when I realized it was a slight continuation it made it way better. The first two are amazing. The third is different and great in a different way. Can't wait for the reaction.
Idk about everybody else but THIS was my most favorite Rocky fight of all time. He was in his prime, young, fast, strong. He got thru Fight 1 with Apollo. But THIS one was a Highly Conditioned Apollo Creed. Harder training, Rocky's moment to capture the Heavyweight Title for the first time and not to mention....MICK WAS HERE❗ We had everything we needed in this fight that mattered the most. Apollo just dancing around the right, Long jabs, right crosses, uppercuts. ALL NIGHT LONG Apollo can fight like this and Rocky just keep coming at him!
Apollo is such a nice and awesome character, gave Rocky 2 chances of a life time at the greatest title in the world! And when he lost gave Rocky the title and raised his hand.
21:20 Why go for the body instead of the face? A well placed body shot can often incapacitate your opponent more than shots to the head. A good punch to the ribs or the gut can knock your air out, mess up your air flow. If you can't breathe, you're not gonna be able to move much and become an easy target. A good punch to the liver can be excruciatingly painful and affect movement. It could even create a chain reaction in your body that will knock you out. Just a few examples.
Good review. To me this feels like an alternate version of the first Rocky, like the script for two was a collection unused scenes from the first movie. My favorite of the Rocky series is Rocky III and I'm looking forward to your take on that one whenever it comes up in your schedule. I'm not a fan of the ones that followed. Another good boxing movie, which is also a period piece, is Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe.
One of the most misunderstood endings in movie history.... rocky did not have to get up off the mat to beat the count to become champion... even if the referee counted both men out with a 10 count, the boxing commission would have no choice but to overturn the referees decision and award rocky the title..... rocky went to the mat from a slip and not a punch from apollo. The rules are very clear, and officially wouldn't even been scored as a knock down.
I love you Emily , you always make me laugh , & when you snort you really crack me up with that but also Rocky II was a good movie & Matthew your awesome lot's of love to you

15:22 People dump on Paulie, not always unjustly, but he legit saved Adrian and the baby because he was there confronting her out of worry for Rocky. No way she's making it to a phone to call for help herself. No cell phones or cordless phones in 1977.
This is my favourite of the whole 'Rocky'/'Creed' series (and my 2nd fave film of ALL TIME next to 'Predator'). It takes all the stuff that made the first so great, raises the stakes personally (and professionally) for Rocky and Adrian and it delivers. It's like a riches-to-rags-to-riches story and drags you down to the depths of despair (that whole vigil sequence is heartbreaking) before it pulls you back up. Such a wonderful journey of emotions and as an extra bonus, the fight itself is arguably the best of the whole series.
There is the rocky series please don't try to mix the creed spin off with them. The Rocky Franchise is legend. Creed one was okay at best, other than that the Creed movies are garbage.
I’ve seen it countless times and never get tired of it! Great reaction….ite cool you realize it’s not so much a boxing movie as it is their love story. If Adrian isn’t on board, Rocky can’t really move forward. He needs her to be with him on every decision.
Body shots are an investment for the later rounds. Mick knew for Rocky to stop Apollo it would have to be in the later rounds. As he begins to cover his body the face is suddenly open for the big shots he lands later in the fight.
Take a look when the kids are running with him after he is jumping over the benches. In the right hand corner of the mob of kids, several of them fall down about 3 rows back. I remember about 2 years ago i was watching this for the hundredth time and picked that up for some reason. Also when Rocky is carrying Adrian back after the wedding, the guy that is singing by the garbage can is Sly Stallones brother Frank who had a hit or 2 in the eighties.
I'm shocked that they haven't created a special edition of Rocky 1&2 where both plays as 1 nonstop movie...meaning right after the freeze frame shot in the first film it cuts straight into the interview scene at the hospital in the 2nd film and at the end of the film the credits for both films will be shown as a whole...I know it would make it a really long film but it really would make it feel more emotionally complete.

Well, the thirty miles from his South Philly home to the Art Museum is a bit misleading. It's maybe three miles - the South Philly house he buys in this film is just a few blocks from my house. The thirty miles comes from his route: he starts in South Philly, goes east to the docks, then back west to pass through the Italian Market (southbound, oddly, with the Museum to the northwest), passes the Art Museum to take Kelly Drive all the way up to the Calumet Bridge in Roxboro and (presumably) back, then past the Museum again to hit the the Parkway by City Hall only to turn back up the Parkway to run the Museum steps. Also, the bridge under which Rocky carries Adrian after the wedding is the El, in the lower northeast (Rocky's apartment was not actually located in South Philly, which made the running montages from the first film even funnier to most Philly residents). I'm hoping that you were thinking that you walked under a different bridge, but if not, I'm very glad to know that you made it out safely, especially if you were there at night - it's been a bit sketchy there the past several years.
I love editing, but I hate how particular I am about it, and I have even waited years for a sequel to drop in order to hopefully get a shot to work into whatever project I'm currently doing. Looking for the proper angle, lighting, character postition(s), even clothing that matches well enough or doesn't change throughout shots to keep the flow is equally frustrating and fun. Well, I should say I loved editing, CZcams copyright is a bitch. :/
Yes! Keep going with these movies. It’s been a year since you did the first one. Watching each sequel through long periods of time kind of lose momentum. Theirs like 8 sequels. You guys should do 1 a month idk.
Well the first 4 movies didn't get released within a few months but each three years apart so chill out. They get to the other sequels when they want to, they don't owe us anything. 🙂

That is so cool! I never knew that. Rest In Peace, Burt Young and Semper Fi!
That means Burt should have played Rocky, not Stallone.
There were other real fighters. Spider (the guy he fights first from the first movie), Tommy Gunn from V, Duke, Mason Dixon
Tony Burton who played Duke, Apollo's trainer, was an actual Golden Gloves champion, professional boxer and a real life boxing trainer.
One of the greatest movie sequels of all time, in my opinion.
"I was wonderin' if you wouldn't mind marrying me too much?"
Best proposal EVER.
I know that feeling when Rocky said "I gotta be around it." I felt that in the center of my heart.
