    I don't understand why people think a pushed in snout, an avalanche of extra skin, sunken eyes, or other general deformities look good. How did these inhibiting traits that are little short of disabilities become a standard? A century ago, if a human had traits such as that, they could find work in a circus.

    • @amysofia5783

      I have heard that the German shepherd actually from Germany has a straight back. While the American version has the slanted back because of AKC breeding. They believe that when the back is slanted the rear legs form a 90 degree angle and that is more attractive. I had a dog that was part German shepherd and his back was totally straight however he did get hip dysphasia.

    i study veterinarian medicine and just so you guys know, most of these dogs are a challenge for vets. not because they can do a bad job, but because these dogs usually already have so many issues that they can't heal by themselves. if your dog can't (not doesn't want to, but can't): breathe easily, eat easily, birth naturally and run (yes, this is a instintcual, inate habit) without dislocating their goddamn hip; it's not at all a happy dog.
    doubt me? measure their cortisol. it's painful to live without being able to breathe correctly and being unable to play (socialize) with others. would you like to undergo eye surgeries and stay at home all day because someone thought you'd just look nicer that way?

    • @litaraduodox5799
      @litaraduodox5799 Před 3 lety +2

      @@luyandamlambo5803 Not necessarily. Selective breeding can come from any selection of certain features, such as a smaller head, curvier back, a docile trait, or even a larger tolerance to the cold weather, for example. Some people selectively breed at home for specific traits like a shorter snout for example, because they believe it looks nicer. The issue is that they don't study the side effects on the animal, such as dificulty breathing, and that anyone can selectively breed while unknowingly harming the animal. Some zoologists selective breed for a better quality of life or recessive traits while being informed of the side effects, which is more recommended and benefits the animal.

    In the late 1960's, I was reading a news story about the medical problems of pure bred Red Irish Setters. The solution was breeding them with Golden Setters. This inter breeding improved the Red Irish Setters medical issues. Because of the inter breeding, the American Kennel Club refused to accept the Red Irish Setter as pure breds.

    Sorry, but working line German Shepherds look amazing and the police and military have a lot of success with them. Some show line German Shepherds are bred horribly, but working line German Shepherds are bred for health and work drive over appearance. I've had working line shepherds all my life, none of them ever had any severe health problems.

      Ashes B As I said before, not sure if you even thoroughly read my comment before jumping to calling them "frog legged", But there are working line Sheherds that do not have sloped backs. They are bred for work drive and health and temperament over appearance. Malinois and GSD are BOTH the preferred breeds for military. Just finished watching a short documentary about military working dogs and their handlers, and majority of the dogs were German Shepherds and a solider being interviewed even said himself that malinois, gsd, and Dutch Shepherds are their breeds of choice.

    • @brenmercedes2002
      @brenmercedes2002 Před 7 lety

      ***** Exactly. I have two working line German Shepherds. One is all black and my other is dark sable. They are both lean and compact. They have straight backs and have extremely high prey drive, always ready to work. That's how a GSD should be. People who don't know a lot about this breed seem to be fixated on the show line German Shepherds that you see in the show ring, rather than taking notice in the REAL working German Shepherds.

    • @TristanBehrens
      @TristanBehrens Před 7 lety +3

      +Mercedes They still have health problems, just because you have not experienced them doesn't mean th aren't their in your own dogs, let alone the breed. Genetic disorders are usually due to the inbreeding used to create the breed, not the physical attributes of said breed, therefore all GSDs are prone to roughly the same genetic illnesses. Your GSD doesn't look like a Grey Wolf, but it is one, same species, just inbred to the point that it looks the way it does, that is what causes the genetic defects. You seem to be taking it too personally, I had a Labrador, they are working dogs, they are still prone to hip dysplasia which can cause them large amounts of pain. This was the case with my own dog, doesn't mean he was a bad dog for it, he did everything a Lab was bred to do. GSDs are bred for strength, speed, obedience and ease of training, and they do this very effectively, they are bred for purpose, health is irrelevant or they would have been left as grey wolves, they ALL are prone to genetic disease.

    • @brenmercedes2002
      @brenmercedes2002 Před 7 lety +6

      Tristan Behrens You didn't tell me anything I don't already know lol. And not taking it "too personally", I'm simply bringing the working line gsd to light since majority of people only seem to think the show line, over sized, sloped back gsds exist. There are much more capable and healthier gsds out there from working lines.

      Well, if dog shows had clauses that would ban unhealthy dogs or dogs with chronic maladies (such as the hip problems caused by the German Shepherds sloping back), first of all, it would send a very strong signal that some things are just not desirable. Secondly, many consumers and breeders alike are rather obsessed with the shows. Even if a consumer don't want to enter competitions, many still feel pride if their pup comes from an award-winning coupling.

      I didn't say not adopting pugs though; that's a good behavior on our part, as long as people don't keep breeding more of them that is.
      Problem is, most people get pugs because they think the traits that make pugs uncomfortable, are cute.
      That's wrong.

    • @brittvaughn9447
      @brittvaughn9447 Před 7 lety +15

      Usually it's not money, actually. Most breeders, excepting puppy mills who don't breed for show and don't care about changing breed standards, spend way more on the dogs than they make in general. It's about their perception of the breed standards as written, and how judging for extremes is the norm. For example, in Neos, wrinkling is written into the breed standard, so the judges put up dogs with more wrinkling regardless of the point at which it becomes a hindrance. We need more dog judges who put up healthy and sound dogs before they put up extremes.

    • @brittvaughn9447
      @brittvaughn9447 Před 7 lety +6

      If you want to change this, become involved in dog showing and work your way up to be a judge. Then, put up dogs that are sound and healthy over extreme dogs. The diversity of breeds is important to our society in countless ways, from service dogs to home companions who fit our lifestyles. Preserving that diversity and health is a worthwhile cause.

      No, "responsible" breeders want to win dog shows... and they have to produce the deformed phenotypes judges reward in order to do that. They define "winning dog shows" as automatically being better. It isn't.

      Alana Drayer interbreeding they did the same with humans. the problem was back in the day they felt some dogs in a certain breed where better then others so if a pug had a curved tail which was unique they would find another dog with a curved tail and make them breed unfortunately that other dog was usually a family member. their children would end up having a much more curved tail then the parents. that's how inbreeding works it exaggerates certain body traits. they did the same to humans as they believed some humans where more superior to others so cousins ended up getting married and stuff

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 Před 7 lety +5

      Most people consider their own dog "the smartest". There have actually not been any scientific tests that compared the intelligence of dog breeds. There have, however been some people who tested dog breeds' trainability and mislabeled their results as intelligence. In reality though, a dog that doesn't do what you tell it, because it considers the reward you offer to be worthless, doesn't necessarily have to be less intelligent than one who obeys your every word.

    • @joshwist556
      @joshwist556 Před 7 lety +3

      animalobsessed1 easy answer to that. I conclude that the stray Moscow dogs are THE smartest dogs as they are even smart enough to RIDE FUCKING TRAINS AND KNOW HOW TO GET FOOD IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS BASED ON THEIR LOCATION OR BASED ON THE HUMAN POPULATION OF THE AREA. You can look it up on google where you can find more information. Really it is natural selection at its finest. Some of the strays learned to ride trains and some learned to recognize humans who have them food as a way to remember them when they come back. Even making packs or "families".

      Gijs Hagenaars i can confirm that mister,humans made this little "teacup yorkie" which is a much MUCH smaller "version" of the normal,healthy yorkshire terrier,these teacup yorkies are,fragile as in health,because of their size they live about as much as a syrian hamster and they're more likely to develop life threatening conditions,first you've got the normal yorkie,then you've got the smaller version of the yorkie,the smaller version is not as small as the teacup thing and is around a pug's size,but if you want a good dog then just try to identify the full size ones,they're very good house pets and are ok with anyone that you bring into your house,(well as long as they're not gypsies lol,my yorkie barks at people who shout stuff but other than that he's fine with anyone,and little kids,as long as they don't pull his tail,i had my younger cousin pet him and he understood that some people are younger)

      Natural selection usually makes sure that only traits that best help an animal breed are the traits that are passed on to the next generation, while weaker less "fit" traits usually dies out as it does not help the creature survive and thrive. However, depending on population size, things like genetic drift can wipe out a trait quickly in a small population, but most negative effects are the result of some disaster. The extent of what humans have done to dogs would never happen naturally. Just look at wolves, which are the result of natural selection as apposed to artificial selection that home dog breeds were subjected to.

    Salukis are one of the oldest breeds of dog and have been unchanged for hundreds of years. They're not "skeletal", they're sighthounds.

      They are very frail for sighthounds though. Greyhounds have a similar height and build but have been bred for speed and endurance, so they're a lot sturdier. Salukis look more gangly now than they used to. No dog breed has been left untouched by selective breeding. There's many ancient dog breeds still around today, but every breed has a "breed standard" and breeders still selectively aim for that when picking which dogs should mate. Salukis are no exception.

      Copperheid actually some breeds are not affected so badly in general dogs that are still typically working dogs even today such as collies are rarely bred for looks but are instead bred to be able to work well. When dogs are bred for strength, intellect and health the dog can be superior to its past counter parts. I think that selective breeding although being horrific is to an extent Necessary in some dog breeds. I suppose that all dogs have been effected by selective breeding but not all in a bad way. Seriously collies are ranked the most intelligent dog cause they were selectively bred to be intelligent so that they could herd sheep.

    Ill take a good old shelter mutt anytime. I love Weimaraners and Great Pyrenees, but the best dog we ever had was a mutt we found along the road. RIP Scooter
