I told myself I was going to do a simple project this time. I thought a headboard would be perfect. But it only took me a few minutes to completely overcomplicate the entire build with hidden LED lights, wireless charging, and floating nightstands...and turn it into a crazy and fun project to make.

Honestly, both. Mix it up. Do big scary projects until you need a break, then hit us with something simpler but more detailed. I like pretty much everything.
Happy to hear that, and honestly that's probably the most sustainable way to keep making fun and unique projects moving forward.

@@shaunboydmadethis One thing I just feel like should be mentioned regarding this Question what Videos you should make for your community! Just think back for a minute, and remember that you most certainly began making videos and publishing content because you simply enjoy Woodworking and creating something physical, that will always remind you of your skills in turn giving you a healthy confidence in yourself.
Now you feel things are changing around you, as your channel seems to grow rather quickly because we all in a different way enjoy watching your workflow and the process to the finished product literally raised from slabs of wood! For me personally It‘s more as if I watch a tutorial where I will always try to mentally comprehend every single step. I am certain that my way of watching videos is something else though, but what this shows you is that whatever you do - you will never satisfy everybody out there! The saddest change in many CZcamsrs‘ carreers once they become increasingly famous, is that they totally forget their roots that are the base of their success! And a lot of artists do very untypical things suddenly as a result of them having lost any control of all their community size. It‘s not far fetched to then get the idea to release mainly what the main amount of people watch on youtube, in order to try and satisfy the majority of their community! But what you shouldn‘t ever forget is that fact that YOU will always remain the one deciding what is being done, whether it‘s something easy and less difficult, or a project you have the ability to grow new skills by stepping into unmarked territory, just like building real rustical furniture made from 100% Euro-Pallets reclaimed wood and nails totally without creating any detailed sketches with predetermined dimensions. It‘s quite an adventure to just look at the wood that you have, and have your ideas turn into something that, with each step turns into something more detailed and beautiful - completely driven by your creativity and spontaneous ideas. I for example made a spice rack for the kitchen, and it‘s regularly noticed by guests that can‘t beliefe that it was made from trashed Euro-Pallets (like having a single broken plank). Btw, they are disassembled without adding even more damages to the planks and bricks using a prybar to pry off the planks off from to to bottom. The top ones are usually the most charismatic ones with their worn surface.

I’m a small time general contractor. We have a woodshop as part of the business but not to your extent. I watch your videos because I know you’re doing what I would do if I had more time. It doesn’t need to be bigger or better each time, but quality and thoughtful builds are what keep me coming back. Living vicariously through you. I will quite literally watch any video you decide to put on here. I just like watching people make stuff and you are one of the best. I would never make this particular bed, but I’m glad you did!
When I was working at my last job, it was a custom fabrication shop and we did everything in house! Every job tested our knowledge and abilities to the limit, and it was the most satisfying job I've ever had. That being said, it was also the most frustrating job with time consuming project after time consuming project! It was nice to have a simple job every once in a while we're my brain didn't feel like it was going to explode from all the complex aspects. My point is, stretch yourself enough to learn about different materials or technics, but don't burn yourself out on them. We will always watch your project builds because they are quality! Thanks!

This was an amazing video. its not out of place on this channel at all. I hope you continue to challenge yourself. In my opinion, you don't necessarily need to 1up yourself everytime, but do what you love and do what inspires you. Your creativity, will spur you on to do new things. Not every part of the climb is reaching the summit, we all have to start from base camp and work our way to the top. Instead of looking for a taller summit, just enjoy climbing, then every day (even the boring ones) have value.

That's a really beautiful project, Shaun. I totally understand the compulsion to get detailed and overcomplicate things; it's how I operate, too. So I'd say keep up the complicated work because it's amazing, then chill on a project or three while you're brainstorming the next dip into madness. Keep up the great work!

Honestly, I just found your channel, so take this as you want. I like to watch people push themselves and struggle because, whether or not it fails, I like the emotional aspect of that comes with trying things. And their always room for a second video if doesn't work.

Honestly, I think this is my favorite thing you ever built. Close to my favorite project on youtube. I mean all your projects are beautiful, but sometimes youtubers projects feel like they are complex, just to be complex. Like they wanted to design a project around that particular skill. Plus I'm personally a touch more old school in my choices for aesthetics. This...all the complexity is functional, and truly adds more to the piece than, "hey that would be cool."

That said, I do have a minor critique and/or rather nagging observation I wanted to share because I feel we often become accustomed to certain aspects of modern technology in our daily lives that perhaps when it comes time for us to fully invest ourselves in a worthy endeavor or truly fine piece of work--the overall cost of which is often quite difficult to quantify--it occured to me that all too often we might overlook details that ultimately could have pushed our work well beyond merely finished and functional to exquisite and sublime. The fact that every project has to have a realistic budget in terms of the various aspects of our overall investment--be it time, hard-earned cash, our talents and our physical blood, sweat & tears (to make little mention of mental & emotional overhead involved)--it might be that we wouldn't have had to lay out much more capital at all to find a better / more appropriate solution that really adds to the PREMIUM fit and finish of a completed build in a way that is so esthetically superior that failing to do so leaves the project feeling somehow unfinished.....or perhaps unrefined.
I cannot help noticing your investment in those remarkably smooth and frankly spectacular Austrian crafted soft-close drawer slides & accompanying hardware; a carefully considered choice in hardware that no one will ever physically see from day to day, yet their inclusion will forever impact the form and function in a manner that is brilliant and certainly worthwhile in my most humble opinion! That is why I was shocked and profundity bewildered by one of your hardware decisions that while functional to be sure, left so very much to be desired in terms of the overall fit and finish of this beautifully handcrafted piece of modern furniture. Because a relatively minor swap of hardware from what is quite commonly seen in any number of very ordinary, mass produced plastic household items to a much more durable, far more esthetically pleasing and certainly more PREMIUM feeling piece of hardware would have elevated your final build to the pinnacle of perfection, I wanted to mention my observation in hopes that it indeed helps you to push the envelope just a wee bit more to reach your CZcams goals and further enhance your sense of deep personal pride for a job well done. 🧐 What is the piece of hardware? (hint: I eluded to it in my prior description--plastic)
The power switch was the most unattractive basic matte black round plastic rocker switch......something I personally found truly ugly, unfortunate and off-putting; especially given the careful considerations you made throughout the rest of the build. 🫣 I inferred by your commentary in this video that electrical stuff isn't necessarily your forte, but perhaps it is for this very reason that you should pay closer attention to those details and push yourself to discover solutions that are on par with the gorgeous walnut, flawless maple and solid brass inlays.
Just because you added wireless charging and pop-out tilting LED lighting doesn't mean you have to settle for the least expensive, crummy plastic power switch (whether bundled with the LED strip lights or not).....particularly when those switches will see a LOT of use.....perhaps multiple times daily....and they almost certainly degrade the user experience by making an otherwise PREMIUM piece of furniture FEEL just a bit plasticky, cheap and mass produced on a Chinese assembly line. Your piece ISN'T IKEA.....so why on earth let it feel like such by using the very same inexpensive switch that IKEA would have used....albeit in white plastic instead of black?!?🤔
Hopefully my critique isn't overly harsh because it is genuinely intended to be constructive, informative from my perspective at least and perhaps a bit thought provoking, since we both know that fine woodwork is a highly detailed and spectacularly involved art form that is falling into disuse in the modern era of MDF and crappy cam-lock fasteners. If it's worth doing......why not do it right? Or at least better than IKEA....😉

Definitely a mix. Accessible with a design twist, then more complex challenging projects - both large and small. Coupling less commonly used materials with wood / wood products can lead to many pleasant eureka / epiphanic moments.
please DO NOT WEAR GLOVES when you use the jointer or saw, becurse if one glove gets cougth in them, they do much more damage then good

Everyday skillsets abound. Edge cases and corner circumstances that arise from unique builds transfer to other constructions. Your not just grooving an inlay but demonstrating a channel method that could be helpful. The LED imbed opens up a world of outside the box ideas. In my case, seeing the need for reinforced struts above ceiling to stabilize a louver wall
Agree both - pushing the boundaries get's the creative juices flowing. As for techniques as well as what you did I'd love to hear why you adopted a certain approach or technique. Whatever you do love the style of your delivery

14:50 one of the best purchases I made here was a set of the festool quick clamps as they slide into all the various tracks found in the festool line up. Including underneath the FS guide so you don’t hit them with the saw.
Yep, I have a few of them. I couldn't use them here because there was a support piece on the underside blocking the clamping spot. It's always something!
