Glad you did this! Been wondering about a new back up camera
Great & informative presentation Chad! You make it look so simple even though I know I would be challenged to,do some of it. Enjoy your travels.
Great show. Very helpful. Thanks
Thank you, very informative
Chad, once again you have provided an excellent video. Your explanation of what you are doing and how you complete your task is always so clear. Thanks for making these videos. TP
Great video, having fun with an improved toy. Thanks for the invite, safe travels for all the family.
Great information in your video especially for those that can do this stuff themselves.
Nice discussion on the upfitter connections. Nice camera upgrade.
Great demonstration of the upfitter switches and how the wiring runs.
I like that new camera it makes alot of difference. Working on the new switches was amazing. Chad you explain things to were it is understandable and easy. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Chad for the upfitters tutorial. I have a 2023 F-350 and want to use those switches. Like the camera also
Ten days ago, I also changed the tires on my F-450.. The originals were fine on dry pavement, but add a half-inch of snow and I might as well have been on ice skates... Changed to a Cooper brand that has some serious grips (ala yours) and I'll have a much better experience when (not if) snow finally gets here.. LOL
Thanks for showing all this! NNTR
After having used the new camera for a couple of months, are you still happy with it? Thank you for all you do Chad!
Thanks ,Chad, for another good video.
You are correct, the camera's still being used have not kept up with the technology. And some of them just outright suck.
I was surprised at how easy it was to get to your wiring and go behind the dash.
I believe the better way was to hard wire the accessories.
God bless ya'll and stay safe on your travels.
Thanks!
Enjoyed the video good information …. Thank you
Nice install execution. I went through the same scenario and dash mount setup to tow our fifth wheel. Previous bean bag mounts were no comparison to Tackform mount stability, ease of driver interface. Your use of upfiitter switches, OEM passthrough wiring is spot on. Dash tray concealed power🤙
Great info!
Always love the videos Chad! That "Upfitter" moniker came from "Upfitter" companies that would, and still do, take the Super Duty trucks and make snow plow vehicles for companies/governments, tow truck conversions, etc. Auxillary switches is more in line with the way the rest of us use them.
For 2012, our F-350 DRW had the camera screen in the rear view mirror, cutting edge at the time, but tiny for hitching our Lance truck camper up! I was an electronic technician, but not an automotive guru, I could have used your video back then for wiring my up-fitter switches. Wiring in my 75-watt VHF 2 meter FM ham radio was so fun as I had to go through the firewall with the 12-gauge wiring & the antenna coax to an antenna bracket on the center top left side of the front quarter panel so it would not interfere with the truck camper over-cab when the camper was in the truck. Also, I had to put in several RFI chokes on the power wiring so the cruise control would not go into full-blown acceleration mode when I was transmitting, no lie!
Anyway, we went with a 6.6L gas 3/4 ton Chevy to pull our 2023 GD Imagine 2670MK as at the time I could not find a 7.3L Ford anywhere & these big block gas engines have about the same TQ that our diesel engines used to have 15 years ago. Going gas left me with enough truck GVWR to safely handle the tongue weight for full-time towing. Sorry I don't have a thriving YT channel, when we went fulltiming in 2008, most RVers only had a basic blog & I am too busy making my own mistakes to document the evidence, lol. I had to put my 2 BB batteries in the inside storage as two group-27 batteries won't fit in the front battery tray with any type of battery box. I bought a fancy aluminum locking battery box for 2 batteries, but had to move it inside, but they stay warmer in cold weather that way & never get too warm as I insulated the box with foam packing to also isolate the vibration to the wiring. No inverter as we are parked 10.months of the year either as a FL snowbird or supporting our Consessionaire employer for the 13 USFS campgrounds we run May to Oct in Colorado. We only get to boondock going between the two locations.
Cheers, Davey & Sheila
Fantastic!
I use the zoom feature of the stock SuperDuty camera.
I was surprised that was not a part of your review.
Would love to see the zoom feature comparisons between the old and new camera.
I do like the line with the stock camera.
Another informative video. I now have some idea how to get wires into the little tray in the center of the dash. Now I have to figure out how to get power from my ignition switch since I don't have any "upfitter" switches on my 2016 F150. Thanks for another great video.
I'd bet there are a couple of ignition based hot wires under there somewhere...
Thanks for this video. Dashcam and upfitter switched next on my list. Tried to get the camera and the are sold out. On the wait list. My 2019 F350drw has terrible cameras. All have cataracts. Under a ford recall from a couple of years ago but still no parts available… dam…. Thanks again. Safe travels!!
Got the notification for this video and before I looked over to the side to see who posted it I was like What!!! BED CAMERA! SHOULD HAVE PUT TRUCK Bed Camera.
I wonder if Ford entertains owner revisions like yours? They should.
Nice cargo camera. I need to get one for 2018 ram. Would make hitching so much easier.
Thanks for the video Chad, our Ram 3500 camera is not that clear either, going to look for a more HD type camera
We need a "sun shade" for the bed camera. I have a hard time using the camera backing under our gooseneck unless its cloudy/overcast. I use the zoom "+" button all the time. I also wish that there would be a favorites/settings to automatically stay in camera mode for short pullups or when putting into reverse to go to Bed Mode vs Bumper mode. etc.
I have yet to use my switches but this video really helps and I am going to add a TST and a Haloview system for next season. One suggestion I have is with respect to electrical tape. There are many kinds of discount tape available. Ignore them all. Spend the money and use only 3m brand tape. It is worth the investment and it lasts. I wire the signals for a streetcar operation in Iowa and we use nothing but 3m. It laughs at the sun, the rain, the weather of all sorts, and it just works. Don’t go cheap. Keep up the great videos!
This is the 3M... I even keep it in the plastic container. Good stuff!
Chad, thank you so, so much for this video. We have the 2022 F-350 Lariat and yes, visibility is not all that great when trying to connect to our Momentum 395ms-r (Gen-Y Executive to Hensley Trailer Saver 5th Wheel).
Now, with that said I can say I do not posses the skills you have with doing the wiring of the accessory switches on my own, let alone the patience. I’ll leave that up to the professionals. LOL
I did similar however, I used a multi port 12v to usb hardwire for the center dash items, less chances for things to rattle and quick tape keeps them together. My dash camera power comes from a hardwired power supply that enables parking monitoring mode/battery. It has a selective battery voltage protection, and an ignition trigger wire. No switches to play with.
With reference to you applying the self soldering splices correctly. By heating the center with the tin directly you are introducing a possible bad soldering joint because all the time until it has cooled down there is a strain from the wires on that joint. The tinniest not even visible movement can mean a non perfect joint. Therefore reorder the way of using them.
First shrink the one side onto the one wire, then the other side onto the other wire. With the wires stabilised no heat up the center and ensure that the heat is applied evenly all the way around relatively even without having much of a temperature difference between the leeward and windward of the hot air stream by holding a tablespoon behind the joint.
Beware that the tablespoon can become hot to hold.
But you will get a cable connection that will not be the source of any electric errors for decades.
The new camera looks great. But did you know that you can hit the + button on the top left of your screen and it zooms in? It’s a game changer when hooking up. Love watching your videos. So much information and looks like you do all your homework. Thanks for posting them.
Yes.. I used that on the stock camera.. but it was just a digital zoom and didn't help a lot. It was still grainy.
Glad you know what to do with your electronics because my car has some stuff not working and some of it is from My mechanic looking for a electronic issue when I told him I believed My fuel pump was going out intermittently, he didn't believe me and some how made my rear window defeoster not work and found out what I said was the issue was the issue.
Great ideas for wiring accessories. I have also used the 12v outlets. Now as I upgrade my my accessories, I am going to dedicated usb usb-c outlets. On keeping the camera in sync, is it possible to add a second power wire through a diode and use another aux switch? Thank you for sharing and have a great day.
Dash clutter is nothing! - My pillars and the towing mirrors are FAR more dangerous than anything on the dash.
They can obscure people and entire vehicles if you don't "bob" your head around to see what's behind them.
Thanks Chad - Great vid - Cheers!
I have pulled a 5th wheel since '05 and I sure don't need a bed camera to hitch up. Since '18 I have use a Goosebox hitch an still don't nee a camera. Oh my truck does not have one because I did not order it with one. Glad you find it somewhat useful,
Sure.. I could twist around and see it... I usually did that with the old camera. But, now I don't have to.
@@ChangingLanes I don't twist around. I use my rear view mirror with both a standard 5th hitch and my now Goosebox. I guess that comes from growing up on a farm with farm grain trucks that don't have rear windows and way back then they had not invented cameras for vehicles. I was driving Dad's 1 ton grain truck at 3 weeks past my 16th birthday to an elevator.
Thanks for making another great video Chad. I just ordered the camera today as they have been out of stock since the time you made this. I also have a 2023 F-450 with the OEM Continental tires on it still. What is your opinion of the new tires since installing. Has it decreased your MPG; also, do they take bumps better on the road? Thanks in Advance!
Chad, love your videos. I was hoping i could as a couple questions about your solar setup? How many panels and batteries do you have. What size charge controller and how long can you run without a recharge? How long can you run ac units. I know in a previous video you said you would like to get 6 hrs or so. Looking forward to your answers. Oh, we have a gd 2023 - 324mbs. Thank you in advance for any help or guidance.
Just use the zoom feature on the stock camera. I've backed to 5th wheels and goosenecks with a low pro box in the bed, like you have, with no issues whatsoever. The new camera does look to have higher definition but I think the loss of the center line outweighs the upgrade benefits. Just my $0.02. Keep up the content!
That feature is a digital zoom and, for us, it's just as grainy and dark as the zoomed out version,.
Upgraded camera definitely gives a bigger more detailed view.
Great information, but do you really need a 25 amp service to each of these devices? Seems to me that you could run most if not all thru one switch, unless you want to be able to pick and chose what is powered.
I have the SAME issue with my 2020 GMC 3500! The camera that shoots the back bed / hitching my FW is NOT good enough to help back to connect. I hope the answer to fix it is the same as on your Ford. (Wish I had the auxiliary switches to permanent wire my gps/back-up camera, but maybe my next one).
My 2023 GMC Sierra 3500hd Denali dually bed camera has a zoom function that makes the hitch so much more visible and larger. I rely on it alot, but only when I'm close to the kingpin.
@tomTLS5 really?! I'll have to look for that next time in my 2019 F250
Please share information on your mounting system for the devices... Bulletpoint? Great info, thanks.
Please see: czcams.com/video/_em_PwVL9Hg/video.htmlsi=LX3hdbf77LvWP1Sj&t=1030
Any idea on when the upgraded cameras will be back in stock ?
Instead of cutting the shrink wrap ends off of the upfitter wires I used a heat gun to heat and remove it by slipping it off. These wires are short enough already.
I still haven’t located the firewall pass through wires in my 2023 F350. They are definitely not in the location stated in the owner’s manual.
That's a great idea! I meticulously cut the remainder of ours off to save wire.
@15:50 if you press the "+" icon in the top left of the screen it zooms in and gives better view. Did you try that?
I had the same comment. Works that way in 21 F350.
Funny.. I was just thinking about that when editing the video (which I just finished about 4 hours ago LOL). I need to try that!
I was wondering the same thing. Any updates?
Any options on adding a bed camera to a truck that wasn't fitted with one from the factory? Cleanest look possible. I haven't looked to see if there is wiring for it in the 3rd brake assembly. If so, I'm guessing the 3rd brake assembly needs to be swapped for one that has the cutout.
23' F350 XLT with upfitter switches
That camera works much better, I have a 450 ‘24 on order.i wonder if the camera has been upgraded from stock? Guess we’ll find out.
I'd put money that it's the same crappy camera.
Probably right@@ChangingLanes
Camera Solutions is a much better option than all of that wiring it hooks up to the factory trailer connection under the spare tire. Check out BTBRV on his install . Also I have the Centramatic wheel balancers and they greatly reduce the vibration and wheel wear . I have 36,000 miles on the Continental tires they should last 50,000 miles. I also replaced the factory rims on my 2022 F450 with Alcoa rims now I can rotate them because they are all the same. I now have the TST valve stem sensors on the truck because the Alcoa valve stems are at the right angle to mount extensions.
I might do the Alcoa also. I also have the centramatics. 👍🏼 I might check out JDs camera if we get a Gen-y goosebox later next year.
@@ChangingLanesAnd that was Camera Solutions not source. You will like the Gen-Y goose ball pin box.We had them install it at their plant August of 2022 it frees up the bed space. Little more difficult to hook up but with the new camera it should be easier.
I’m curious how your tires perform while towing? I have the same tires are the tread squirm has been almost unbearable so I’ve been contemplating different steer tires. I tow a Solitude 380FL.
Did you lose the backup line with the aftermarket camera? Do they make an upgraded bed camera?
Bed camera??!!! Maybe should have added the word "truck" before bed.... 8^) Cool upgrade, thanks for sharing!
😂🤣
Chad, the dash built dash mount just arrived! I also have the Garmin 895 (the one with the magnet). What’s the specific gizmo you use to hold the magnet part of the Garmin to the dash mount? I’d like to order one. Great video!
The links are in this post (at the bottom), and the video talks about it... I forget the name of it. AMPS, I think...
changinglanesrv.com/2022-ford-f450-platinum/
Great Video!! do you use a tire valve extension on the rear inner tire along with the tpms? and if so which brand. Thanks in advance!!
Yes I do! See: czcams.com/video/_em_PwVL9Hg/video.htmlsi=-5hUkSbdiIWasF4d&t=1367
Awesome, Thank You@@ChangingLanes
Sorry, had a senior moment I meant to suggest contacting Marc of Keep Your Daydream.
The wiring looks a little intricate for my skill set. Will they set those up at the dealer I wonder, why did you use the cigarette lighter in between?
I'm sure the dealer will run them for a fee. The adapter is just the simplest way to adapt the 12V DC truck to the 5VDC USB. It converts both electrically and physically.
I have the same GPS and TPMS and just used the USB outlet in the magnetic base of the GPS to power the TPMS. Couldn’t tell if you have anything else plugged into it or not.
Yes.. we use the base mounted on an AMPS mount to a ram mount to a builtright mount. All covered here if you're interested: changinglanesrv.com/2022-ford-f450-platinum/
Regarding the tires, how often do you put your truck into 4x4 while towing?
Almost never, but there have been a few times where it was absolutely necessary (before our gravel road).
I need to find a way to mount that camera on my E450 ford. Going to be @ RV show January 17 - 21, 2024 ? ( FYI USN P-3A Orion - AX1 & USAF B-52D's - SGT)
Not sure about the RV show yet, but no plans to attend this year. P-3's... that coveted shore duty! LOL. Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸
Non video related question....Chad with you going into the national parks do you have Veteran on your license or do you have a separate ID?? If you do have it on your license do they accept it at the national parks?
I have it on my license and they do accept it at the National Parks.. 👍🏼
Did you stay with 225 / 70 size or go up 245/70 or 265/70; saw on other post you put same on Ft. Was considering 245 minimal, possible 265 to improve gear for highway cruise… take 4.30 towards 4.0 gear. With the ForScan.. you can set tire size to retain Speedo accuracy. The 6.7 has ample power to handle, more towards F350 gear.
You mentioned Reverse default view on backup camera… not certain, I think that value can be changed within ForScan too.
Yes.. stock 225's. I don't want to mess around with sizes not matched to the rims when towing heavy. I might change up the whole setup next time... rims and tires.
@@ChangingLanes sounds good! Just an FYI; The larger size 245 or 265 are same model & spec 19.5 tires, just a little taller. Doesn’t need new rims. I personally like the F450 rims.
Why do you connect each device separately on the upfit switchs.
None of them use much power. Could easy turn on all dash accessories on 1 switch.
Check out Big Truck Big Rv. He installed one on his F450
I'm surprised you didn't need to sync that camera to the computer in your truck. I have a F150 and had to replace the tailgate. the backup camera no longer works. Maybe the F450s are different. Keep the good stuff coming Chad.
With the tailgate/backup camera you do need to reprogram with the CHSML camera you do not. It's on a different module.
Did you put the XDS2 tires on all 6 wheels and go with the stock 225 size? We replaced our fronts with the Michelin Agilis HD Z and they made a huge difference. Rides so much smoother and no more wandering when going over lines in the road. We are at 50k on the stock Contis and considering the XDS2 for the rear but am a little worried about noise and tire longevity.
Yes.. all 6. Going to see how they do... Towed on the highway today and it was pretty good.. A little wandering in construction zones with odd surfaces.
HI CHAD & TARA 👋
MY SON HAS A FORD 450 . I'VE BEED SENDING HIM YOUR VIDEOS 📹 HE WAS LOOKING AT 5TH WHEELS MAYBE FOR THE FUTURE .
THANK YOU FOR GOING THROUGH ALL THIS FOR EVERYONE ❤ BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED ❤ GOD BLESS YOU BOTH & THE PUP ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏 THANK YOU 😊 🙏
I would like to also replace my cargo camera but after searching on google all I seem to get is how to install a OEM setup. I followed you link and it seems to be Ford only, do you know anyone who sells the upgrade camera for later model rams ?
off topic, but it sounds like a lot of folks are having trouble with their Frame on the GD,, is your holding up?
Ours have both been good. 👍🏼
What are you planning to use as a steer tire? It appears that the brand you chose is designed as a drive tire for urban applications. Line-haul application would be more advantageous to you with the highway driving you mostly do. A friend of mine has those tires on his drive axles on his Ram 5500 tow truck and is not getting super mileage from that tire used in local urban applications.
I have them all around.. Time will tell how they do on steer.
I think we all have 6 uplifted switches in the Superduty. You described where power is for 4 of them. What’s the story on the other 2?
They are all under the distribution box. 👍🏼
@@ChangingLanes Upfitters 5 & 6 are 40 amp capacity compared to 1-4 which are 25 amp capacity. 5 & 6 can be either ignition hot or with the sliding of the 5 amp fuse inside the Upfitter box, they can be energized with the ignition off.
Chad, curious why your truck voltage was only 11+ volts? It should be 14+. Did I miss something?
Truck DC should be 12V unless running and charging.. or if using lithium. The reading was 11.7, which is normal in ACC mode.
Seems as if you could power up multiple small devices on a single switch without needing to dedicate individual switches.
I did that originally, but it would blow the fuse in the adapter. No idea why with the TPMS current so low.
Any concerns with law enforcement dinging you for the dash clutter?
Traveling with most of this stuff since 2018 and no issues yet.. Fingers crossed! 😊
Bonjour dommage qu'il a pas traduction en français sur faut vidéo
For some unknown reason I can’t see the type of camera that you were using. It doesn’t say the name of it. I didn’t know if you could help me out with that. Thank you.
You can find all of the links at the bottom of this post (and in the video description): changinglanesrv.com/f450-upgrades/ 👍🏼 Thanks for watching! 😊
We purchased a 2022 Ram 3500 ordered it brand new with a bed camera its HORRIBLE !!! Anyone knows if their is a replacement camera for that ?
Reach out to the company (linked in description).. I'm not sure what models they cover.
Do they make this camera system for a 2020 Chevy Silverado ?
I'm not sure. You can check here: changinglanesrv.com/bedcam
Nope just Ford
Chad, good morning. If you happen to have a contact number for Mark of Changing Lanes he was just complaining about the poor quality of his backup camera on his Ford. I put a comment for him to watch your video but you might be able to get the word to him faster. Thanks, love your vids.
What’s the name of the new camera?
You can find all of the details in the description below and here: changinglanesrv.com/f450-upgrades/
At least Ford made it an easy task to get to the 3rd brake light camera., GM is a nightmare just to access the rear of that brake light.
No train horn chad? lol
Hey. My 2023 F350 Godzilla. The upfitter wires don’t come out by the toe kick. They are just coming out bottom right of glove box. Just take the door off. But why the $@#% did ford use small wires plus only give 1 inch of lead to use. I barely stripped the wire and put wago connector on it. Thanks from bills cool projects on CZcams. By the way I did get the xatang 2.0 cover for the long bed and the uws tool box. Hey get the banks pedal monster on the 450 and smile
It's like Ford is tryin to make it difficult! LOL
@@ChangingLanes ya. Allot of things were changed on the 23. Try out the pedal monster from banks. No more dead pedal. 10 min to install
Maybe better rear lighting would have solved your issue instead of a new camerea
To me all that stuff may not affect your vision. but to me they are a huge distraction to safe driving just like using a cell phone by hand held.
Glancing over at the GPS or trailer cam is really no different then scanning the dash and rearview, IMO.
@@ChangingLanes Opinions differ.
Why not splice into the dashcam power and then both dashcam and TPMS come on....with or without the RV behind you? then you'd still have one spare 12v line for something else.
I was thinking the same thing. That you could have two displays wired to a single upfitter switch, so long as they don't pull too much power when combined.
I actually tried that by using an adapter with dual USB ports. But it kept blowing the fuse in the adapter.
@@ChangingLanes....WOW!! Hard to believe those 2 devices would draw more than 15 amps combined. BTW...I am not doubting you....I am just so surprised. I just got our new TST 707 display and I was hoping to tap into one of my existing upfitters on our 2022 F-450 (exact same truck you have)
That's was I was worried might happen. Glad to know you tried it and it did't work.@@ChangingLanes
My 21 ram 3500 has a way better set up. I have my 6 upfitter switches with plug ins under the hood & i also have a vsim set up . ( vehicle system interface module) which i can run a whole myriad of things .
Hey why not make a video and show us? ,,🤔
I've wondered how ram does this..
Camera shows sold out. Heh.
The only thing I can think of is (other than being overly "thrifty"), is a feed for a relay??? (I kno being dumbs, it's driven by a relay) That's all I got... honest.
Ford has been known for "interesting" engineering decisions [I had an 89 Cougar, XR. But the door glass was longer than I am tall, & was held on with 2 plastic clips, had to fix that 'bout every 6 month's or so].
I had to drop the Gas tank, to remove the transmission. It was surrounding the drive shaft. Under the back seat.
Gawd I loved that beast.
