It's a travesty Adam West never got to act opposite Christopher Reeves. We could've had a 4-way conversation between Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Batman, and Superman.
Yeah... this scene proves to me that Adam West's sense of humor on the set of Batman was much drier than it was later. He's clearly acting to a comedy, but in the same way those fast-talking comedic duos who were his contemporaries. He just didn't have *"jokes"* in the traditional sense. None of them did, really. But the humor clearly got out in scenes like this.
Wait, Adam West?? Mayor Adam West from Family Guy is Batman?!?! I thought the voice sounded familiar, but I never even considered it was the same guy, what a legend!
The 1960s series may have been an overload of camp, but moments like this show us just how skilled these actors were. Listen to the phone conversation with your eyes closed--Adam West's changes in tone and inflection make it perfectly clear who he's speaking as, even without seeing which phone he's holding up to his ear. Batman sounds confident and commanding, while Wayne seems unsure and a bit taken aback over the whole thing. It really does sell itself as a conversation between two very different people.
It was similar to how Reeves would sound and act differently, even down to just his posture, when he was Clark Kent vs when he was Superman. Like, if you were in that world with no knowledge that Superman had a secret identity at all, you could easily never make the connection. At most, people might think they look similar, but not that they were the same person.
One thing I don't think the Adam West show gets enough credit for was, until The Batman in 2022, he was the only live action Batman who was a proper detective like in the comics. As much as I love Michael Keaton and Christian Bale, those versions of the character would just punch their problems away.

The 60's Batman may have been cheesy (a product of its time). But that scene was simultaneously one of the funniest and most satisfying displays of acting I have seen. The seamless transition between the confident Batman and the more timid congenial Bruce Wayne, without pause, or breath. Even if it took 1000 takes to get right it would still be impressive.

@Vampie04When speaking to a large group of people, of course one is going to go for a higher pitch, as that carries farther. It has nothing to do with being commanding in and of itself.
I'd like to see Ben Affleck attempt this. Or Patsy-son. Michael Keaton, though - he could pull it off. He was great in The Flash. No wonder he won a Oscar. Clooney would struggle too. Kilmer could do it. Christian Bale would rant and not even finish his take.

He could've just said the plan and had Wayne say, "Sounds good." But added a level of cowardice and self-protection by having Wayne concerned about the risk and having Batman give his word. Great attention to personally traits.
Hmmmm... I don't understand your comment. Robin/Dick Grayson knows exactly what is going on. That's not what he would be thinking at all. He knew the situation they were in and telegraphed that information to Batman/Bruce Wayne with his emphasis on "Chief O'Hara" when he was talking to the Chief after he answered the phone.
West's Batman wasn't terrible. But it certainly was campy. The series was made in a time, when comic books were regarded as stories for kids and as such received similar treatment with television execs. A lot of fun - not much more that that. (I wonder how Adam West felt about his own work?) While Keaton's Batman had a more serious tone, it still had a minor campy feel to it. But it was slowly getting to resemble that dark knight of vigilante justice, that we've all now come accustomed to. Then the WB cartoons got to show the broody, moody all-too-serious Bats with a great intellect and an ability to think 10 steps ahead. And that, I guess, is how we want him. The Bale Bat movies really went deeper with the origin story and got to show off all the reasoning for why and how a man decides to put on a batsuit to fight crime. A great trilogy that became. Unfortunately, the newer movies from DC with Ben Affleck never really got a chance to truly shine, thanks to rush jobs in trying to create and match Marvel's well-established cinematic universe. But hey, as long as Batsy gets a fair treatment in the realm of comic books and animation, all is good.
@@mrcritical6751 i prefer the more serious stuff myself as oppose to this more eye rolling campy stuff. I also dont find things depressing or brooding just because theres some drama and tragedy. Over an electronic speaker and without a face to the voice it's surprisingly easy to make yourself seem like someone else.
Mel Blanc, known as one of the greatest voice actors who played Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the other Looney Toons, had once said that to himself he doesn't notice too much of a difference between different character voices even though many would tell you they all sound unique.
I bet the producers were desperately waiting for the scene to finish filming, so that they could all burst out laughing.

The sixties was all cheesy so batman was allowed to be cheesy
The thing is, it was intentionally "cheesy", they even say: "for the lovers of the absurd" in the movie intro.
Id agree with you if there was change in tone of voice between Bruce and Batman but theres not.
It was the sixties, we didn't use cheese we used corn.
@@peterriverajr6899 Except there is a change in how each character speaks. Listen to when Batman speaks to the Gordon, it's kind of abrupt, confident and to the point, then when Bruce first speaks to Gordon, is a softer, slower delivery. He doesn't put on a fake voice but there is no doubt that his delivery changes for each character.

as funny as this is, people exaggerate his voice much like William Shatner. the first movie had just enough of a gravel to the voice to sound intimidating, it wasnt until the later installments that he sounded like he ran a marathon between takes.
@@Shiirow Well yeah but that’s the difference. Shatner’s voice is actually just an exaggeration despite it never sounding that way. Bale had one movie where he used a perfectly fine subtle voice disguise and then actually did take it way over the top in the next two.

Yet people think that West was a terrible Batman. Get out of here with that nonsense. Adam West was, is, and forever will be an awesome Batman.
West is his own version of Batman one that’s awesome in his own way without having to be a broody depressed nutjob
West's Batman wasn't terrible. But it certainly was campy. The series was made in a time, when comic books were regarded as stories for kids and as such received similar treatment with television execs. A lot of fun - not much more that that. (I wonder how Adam West felt about his own work?)
While Keaton's Batman had a more serious tone, it still had a minor campy feel to it.
Because he made Batman do comical and rubbish things, which Batman is not expected to do, and would himself never do, that is why Adam is not considered good version of Batman!!

To be fair, Adam West wasn't the first to play Batman on screen. The older serials have been mostly forgotten because of the iconic job that Adam West did.
Well the show was geared towards kids, and this was done during the silver age of comics when the comic code authority forced comics to be less violent and way sillier for kids. While it may look silly today compared to the darker tones of Christian Bale or Ben Aflac, Adam West played the role that was written perfectly
