About the track:
In both the video for the song and a live performance of “Dolphin” on The Late Show With David Letterman in December 1994, Prince (who was then identified solely by his unpronounceable symbol) appeared with the word “SLAVE” scrawled on his right cheek, a reference to his ongoing fight for artistic freedom and public battle with his label, Warner Bros. Records.

As with the song “Endorphinmachine,” “Dolphin” was written and recorded well in advance of the release of 1995’s The Gold Experience and had already become a familiar part of Prince and the NPG’s live shows by the time the album version was available to listeners.
The lyrics for “Dolphin” find Prince exploring spirituality and the idea of reincarnation, and the video depicts him in a similarly reflective mood, perched on a satin bed with his iconic gold symbol guitar as members of the NPG perform behind him.
The video for “Dolphin” was released on September 30, 1994, almost a full year before The Gold Experience, and made history as the first video to be played on VH1 Europe. The video was later offered as a download to subscribers of Prince’s pioneering NPG Music Club in 2001, released as part of the NPG Music Club Edition #11.

The Gold Experience has to be Prince's most underrated album.
Every time someone calls a musician's works 'most underrated' I feel like that person just found out about it and is trying to play it off like they knew it all along
I will always consider the Lovesexy/Camille/Black Album era to be his greatest and most underrated, personally. I feel people heap too much praise on Prince's later music because they love him so much and don't want to criticize him. They can't admit they he made some substandard music in his later years. The Gold Experience is great, but I think you're kidding yourself if you think it's as good as any of his 80's work. To each his own I suppose.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the psychedelic hard Rock side of Prince is under-appreciated. Maybe one day future generations will dig it as much as his other musical phases.

It’s about the industry as a whole. The execs, the radio stations , the fair weather fans...
Hip Hop had taken over, the smear campaign had begun and the whosepapers and ragazines were kicking him to the curb.
The music was still beautiful.
Prince was just saying that he had to be true to himself musically and he didn’t follow trends and because of that, they wouldn’t let him in.
They called him crazy and the media was perpetuating it. (So did he sometimes) They called him nuts so that other artists wouldn’t listen to his songs of freedom.
Radio stations couldn’t play him even if they wanted to or they’d anger the record companies.
To this day, people still have it in their heads that his post 80’s stuff was all trash. Liars.
Now, people are listening to it and they’re surprised. The lucky ones(like me) stuck around for the whole ride.
But you have to admit that his 80s stuff is top notch and much better than his 90s stuff

Prince is my all time favorite artist. I own everything he’s ever released and most everything unreleased.
I listen to him so often that sometime I get burnt out, but for some reason I never get tired of this song.

He is my favorite too. I saw him in concert only once in 1984 and then after the 90's I didn't really listen to him, always loved his older music. When he died, my eyes were open to all he had done and I had missed. I spend every day for the past month on here finding new treasures of my favorite Singer, Entertainer, Artist etc. I love this song and so many others. My family teases me about my obsession, but seriously-he was and will always be my favorite artist.
