Something I really like in this show is how in S1, when Paul was giving kid Rudeus advice on how to approach girls he told to not just show his strong aspects, but his weaknesses too
Everyone thinks Rudeus is a really strong dude who can overcome just about anything, everyone *except* his wives who know just how weak he is mentally
That's why Elinalise, Geese and Talhand ultimately chose to leave him be, expecting him to overcome his situation alone. Meanwhile Roxy, who knew Rudeus as a kid and knew how really is on the inside, chose to step in in that situation and help him

    Aaaaand Sylphie evolves into MILphie!
Couple of details / cultural tidbits here contextualized by the light novel:
    1) Sylphie grew up around Paul, Lilia, and Zenith, and that shaped her perception of what a "normal" marriage looks like in this world.
    2) When Sylphie first saw Rudeus walking around with Elinalise in the Academy, she was trying to figure out if she had to pull a ploy similar to what Roxy did here to slide in as Rudeus's #2. She was being literal when she said she would've done the same in Roxy's position.

This isn't even true MILFy form. The baby bump, the clothes, and the shawl are putting in most the work in making her look like that. She might only be 1/4 elf, but that still guarantees she's not going to look any older than 20 for a long time.

I really liked Kyle's comment about how the people of this world interpret some things in simplest ways(lighting fire in a cave/poison etc.) and how he applied that to Rudy/Roxy affair. I always thought of that part as Geese and Elinalise being crude because of Elinalise's history of seducing man while reading the LN but it makes sense that they simply think we have a depressed guy here, sex can cheer him up. Wonderful commentary.

It’s been a while since I’ve read that part of the light novel (or it may even have been in the web novel) but I do believe it’s implied that sex isn’t just something they cheers someone with depression up but in that world it’s viewed almost like a cure, a bit like how getting back into a labyrinth as fast as you can would prevent the curse that made it so you could never enter again (PTSD)
So in Roxy’s mind she wasn’t just being selfish she was legitimately trying to save Rudy

That promise not to cheat was under the premise of normal circumstances. Not being into a depressive, self destructing, near death state where he had to get helped out from and saved from dying. I dont think Rudy thought about ending in such a state when he made that promise. If Paul hadnt died he and Roxy would have never done what they did. And even after that Rudy never planned to marry Roxy too despite all his affection for her if Elinalise hadnt pushed him into it. Syphie understood that Roxy saved him and for Sylphie a husband who is alive is more important to her than a dead one that didnt "cheat". Also Sylphie and Roxy both know that Rudy despite being strong on the outside he is pretty weak on the inside. They know about his traumas and how they both had to actively save him from them since he couldnt overcome them on his own. Then there is also the scene where Rudy asks Syplhie what her biggest wish is and it isnt for Rudy to not betray her and to not cheat on her, it is to not disappear on her.

10:45 there are a few things I want you to be aware regarding the context within Mushoku Tensei.
    1. In medieval times it was common for nobles to have multiple wives.
    2. The Greyrat family in particular is known for being more lewd than most.
    3. Rudy did say he would be faithful, however Sylphy knows him better than himself and she never expected him to fulfill that "promise", as mentioned in the episode.
    4. This was mentioned many times in the anime, but only the Millis followers are monogamy apologists (much like Christianity).
    5. Sylphy is not a Millis follower
    6. Sylphy grow up her whole childhood while seeing Paul with 2 wives - Zenith & Lilia. This makes the concept of polygamy much more 'natural' in her eyes.
    7. The situation with Paul and Zenith was much worst, cus Zenith is a Millis follower. She genuinely felt betrayed cus she, like most people nowadays, was not acceptive of polygamy and expected a monogamous relationship with Paul.
For me personally, I think it makes more sense to interpret the situations within their context than trying to transpose them to modern times (even though polygamous relationship still exist, they are just way more rare).

Other than being a Millis follower, what really blew Norn up was more about her guilt towards Sylphie. Remember, Norn was the person who convinced Rudy to travel to Begaritt, originally he wanted to follow Man God's advise to not go, even Sylphie was telling him "Oh I'm fine you should save your mom" he still refused to go. Norn is very aware that she was the person who sent Rudy out to a trip where he totally could die, leaving his pregnant wife behind.
When Norn was saying about what Sylphie was said everyday about how much she misses Rudy, she's pretty much lashing out her guilt and her frustration, because every time she heard Sylphie saying those stuff in the past couple months, she just felt more and more guilty about it.
It was great to follow you guys for this season! I totally agree your point, sharing a partner isn't an easy thing. In fact I do believe committing to a relationship is already not easy, not to mention committing to multiple of them, that's multiple layers of difficulties upon it.

Let's put this out there this was coming.
Elise being a puppet master to this whole thing if anything she would be the one that should have been in the hot seat.
Slyphie shows how mature and accepting she is which is why she's considered best girl. And personally while norn went off on both Roxy and Rudy she really shouldn't have been in that room at that time because it wasn't her conservation to have as it was ultimately on slyphie to accept or not. And just a bit of a catch when you said " shut up norn" slyphie actually said that in the LN to her and I wish they kept that in

  • @Tounushi
    @Tounushi Před měsícem +2

Sylphie has essentially two conditions to accepting someone as an additional wife to Rudeus (and she's expecting a minimum of three):
The prospective wife loves Rudeus (clear as day with Roxy)
Rudeus loves the prospective wife (Rudeus has never been able to STFU about Roxy)
She also doesn't want him to break his relationship with her, but I don't know how hard she'd fight to stay with him. She is utterly terrified of the prospect of being replaced, of not being suitable for him anymore. A fear she told him about as they retired for the night after he got back. She doesn't mind sharing him, as this is normal in her society and especially with her husband's bloodline, but she never wants to be discarded by him.
An additional condition is that the prospective wife isn't Nanahoshi. This is more of a product of the other conditions and the fear she has. She can't understand the bond between the two, but she knows Nanahoshi doesn't love Rudeus. But the fandom likes to overblow this into outright paranoia and yandere tendencies.

I'd like to preface that I enjoy hearing your takes on most of the issues at hand in Mushoku Tensei. Also, understanding why characters make decisions, isn't the same as agreeing with the decisions made by characters. I'd like to break down some motivations and give a little context to some misunderstood aspects of this episode.
Some people assume that because Roxy told Rudy that she took advantage of him, that the motivation and action were solely because of her selfish desires. Ulterior motives were present, yes, but the main purpose of sex was to pull Rudy out of a death spiral. He hadn't eaten in a week and barely drank enough to stay alive. The whole group got together and talked about how they would save Rudy from this. Elinalise expressed how she had rescued many adventures from grief using sex. If you talked to a psychologist, they'd be first to tell you that sex is often used for and is quite successful at helping people who are grieving. Rudy wasn't lying, Roxy saved him. I don't disagree with the argument that there might've been another, better way to pull Rudy out of it. This world is a medieval setting, and the characters believe psychological issues to be curses. The only thing they could think of to save him was sex, which did succeed, even if it was morally wrong.
Next, I understand the initial anger about having the discussion with the whole family present. Rudy has only ever experienced this type of situation once, during his childhood, when Lilia let the entire family know at the dinner table that she was pregnant. Zenith, then had the discussion about Lilia with everyone still in the room. This included Rudy, who was 5 or 6 at the time, while Norn and Aisha are 11 or 12. I don't recall too many people being as angry with Zenith or Lilia for talking about this with Rudy present. They even allowed him to influence the decisions made. Adding a person into the household was a discussion for the whole family.
Now onto another issue, you and many others have hard internalized Rudy's thoughts on his "promise" to Sylphy. He didn't say what most think he did, and even Rudy thinks he promised something that he didn't. The dialogue in the episode was S-"If, um, I can't manage to have kids, you could always get a concubine." R-"I'll do no such thing. What I want isn't children, it's the fruit of love with someone I cherish. I love you, Sylphy." His promise, in Sylphy's eyes is not that he would only love her and that he'd stay faithful. It was that he wouldn't take a concubine to have kids and that he only wants the fruit of love with someone he cherishes. Him taking another "wife", especially Roxy, isn't at odds with that statement from Sylphy's perspective. Internally, Rudy turns this conversation into a stay faithful promise. At the time, he didn't even think he could love someone else. This does mean he broke a promise to himself and he should feel bad for that, but that doesn't actually involve Sylphy in the same way Rudy or most watchers believe.
Lastly, we saw plenty more of Sylphy's perspective than anyone noticed. First some context. Sylphy's main worry was that someone better than her would come along, and Rudy would leave her for the better option. With that, when Rudy says he'd like to invite Roxy into "our" home as his "second" wife we see her jaw drop a bit. She was surprised/relieved that he wanted to add Roxy to their home, not leave or replace her for Roxy. Next, he describes how he was in a death spiral and that Roxy saved him from it. Roxy was surprised that he realized this. Remember, she tried to make him blame her for everything by saying she did it for her own selfish gain, rather than tell him the more nuanced reason. You then see Sylphy's eyes widen. This internalizes to Sylphy that Roxy saved Rudy when she couldn't be there for him. When Sylphy stops Roxy from walking off she mentions that her jealousy is gone now that she knows the "Only mage he looks up too" is just another girl like her, not a perfect being Sylphy could never come close to. Sylphy also mentions that if she was in Roxy's place, she would've done the same thing Roxy did. Even if it meant hurting Rudy's wife, Sylphy would have prioritized saving his life over all else. And finally she says she welcomes Roxy and that they should support Rudy together. This relates back to how Roxy saved Rudy when Sylphy couldn't be there. Now she's welcoming Roxy to help take care of Rudy's well-being, to cover for any shortcomings there might be. Whether it's physical safety, emotional connection, sexual needs, or any other support.
I'd be happy if any of my explanations gave you a new perspective.

Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts. Many of these I think I've discussed in other comments. I get many of your points, and they're fair opinions and interpretations to have.
I can't say they make me rethink my position, but our positions really aren't positions on the characters themselves, but commentary on actions from our own lenses.
We harbor no ill feelings to anyone in the series for their actions. Not in a "in-world" way at least. If that makes sense.

One thing I love about this episode is how Norn is being used to address the issues people would obviously have with this situation. Like, the author didn’t want to brush those issues aside, he wanted to actually address those issues. I just think that is awesome because he knows people aren’t going to like this, not after everything that was built up with Rudeus and Sylphie already. No matter what you think about the situation, you have to admit that it’s just good thought into the writing.

Enjoyed your series reaction and your bringing your lived experiences in to the discussion. Given how many mentions we've got about Milis from Norn, Elinalise, Cliff, etc. I wonder if we'll see more on the religious conflict between the various Milis church factions that were introduced in Eris the Goblin Slayer? Haven't heard much from that! Sylphie said Prince Ariel planned to stay another 2 years or so at the school, so there's probably another year or so before they need to resolve whether Rudy and Sylphie join her coup or not. Only reason it didn't happen was Aisha hearing him......ngl Sylphie was there and why she didn't show up sooner is just due to plot but yeah. Is that she was actually prepared for Rudy to take a second wife because she knew Rudy was perverse etc. But she also knows Rudy is honorable he is not likely to pump and dump so to say. Sylphy knew that if Rudy cheated the woman would likely mean a lot to him. And that he would not abandon her. So in a weird way she actually was right and kinda proud of Rudy she really knew the man she married! lol Now she did admit to herself and maybe to Rudy and the others that it happened a lot sooner than she expected! She kinda wish she got to keep Rudy to herself longer.

There are three types of Mushoku Fans, the ones who ignore the degeneracy of Rudeus, the ones that accept Rudeus for the flawed but earnest character he is, and the ones who relate to Rudeus personally (being a "loser"). The ladder also come in two varieties, the secure & reasonable and the insecure & toxic. I think you guys are type B, and the people who were arguing with you in the comments were type C2. Don't listen to TypeC2 fans, they are not worth your time, they probably have a lot of personal problems they need to work out before they are ready to have civil conversations with people.

I think people focus too much on the cultural aspect when they try to explain sylphy’s acceptance of situation. I think people like to ignore the personality based explanation because it opens the path for less charitable interpretations
im my opinion sylphy has a pathetic attitude towards rudeus. i am not talking about how she accepted roxy but her general attitude with her relationship with him
somewhere in the academy arc before the sylphy identity was revealed. (i don’t remember what volume was. it was in vol 8 or 9) she was fantasizing about what would her married life would be with rudeus. she said in her thoughts that she would actually prefer a monogamous relationship even though she isn’t millis faithful herself. But in the same train of thoughts she discarded the idea because „rudy is a perv”
why sylphy discards the idea so easily?
sylphy has the same kind of hero worship that rudeus has for roxy but not on that ridicolous degree.
she hes a low self esteem and she thinks she only got rudeus beacause she was in the right place in the right time
she is a really submissive and dependent person. in season 1 one paul was afraid if she keeps spending time with rudeus she will become totally dependent to him. it did not work she only become like 95 percent dependent in the end.
she is afraid of the acutally non-existent possibility of rudeus abandoning her if she don’t want to accept more wifes.
overall, sylphy has low self-esteem, she sees him a larger figure and she is a really dependent person. she always striked me as a type of person who would be lost without others and because of it she bend backwards i little too much to accomodate rudeus without without her setting up boundaries.
my impression for their relationship was she had a kind of a sheepish attitude towards rudeus in the start of their relationship but she became somewhat more assertive as time goes by.
sorry for the rant. it may seems after the rant i hate the show or something. I like the show and the light novel series. i only wrote this rant because it annoyed me that people talked about her as if she were some kind of ideal selfless wife.
i think the actual harem is better written than in most anime and they have a somewhat believable relationship dynamic and their family feels wholesome at time. but i think the harem is still bad for reasons i won’t disclose bacause it would be spoiler
    thank you for your reading

the problem with many ppl out there is that mushoku tensei is not perfect and its not end perfectly like how an ideal fantasy should be with the character and their decisions they want to be, which is not the point of mushoku tensei to begin with, norn is a symbolism of childish, ignorant who think about things perfectly and how the most ideal situation she want to happen and mad at the world that its not going to happen, does she wrong? no, but the world, the characters and their situation are not black and white, when it happens to paul and rudy they can go separated way and got a divorce, but paul and rudy with their wives choose not to, why not? because its the decision that they already decided and accepted.
is it wrong to choose divorce after what happened with paul and rudy with their cheating from their wife? no, but in this story, these character choose not to after thinking it through about what they want with their relationship, mushoku tensei setting and character are about flawed ppl that made mistake, that try to change, but still make mistakes anyway but its not that they are evil malicious assholes that ppl treated them to be, paul and rudy, the infamous greyrat men(well known for being attractive and playboy etc) are genuinely cares and try to be a better person which they did, tho encountered some problem, but some ppl mad at them and the shows because its not end up perfectly like some ideal story and think that is a bad thing.

i know not everyone's brain works like this but to be honest when i hear a lot of people complain about the messed-up stuff in the series especially in the source material or how they can't follow Rudy as a protag because hes a pervert that doesn't really faze me that much because i have a high level of dissociation from the fiction especially since I've seen things like Berserk and as much as people shit on the series for the questionable things in it when i take step back and compare it to the other anime/manga series like Berserk MT doesn't even come close to the Depravity of berserk and it honestly really surprising that people have such a problem with the series when you compare it to a series like Berserk which has every conceivable form of human depravity depicted in it and it is held as one of the greatest manga of all but for some reason MT is seen as disgusting garbage by a lot of people despite it being pretty tame in comparison

It's very true that accepting a new wife over him sleeping with prostitutes or having a mistress is harder emotionally and that can be shown through historical lenses as well. Where most societies did allow polygyny but a lot of them only allowed 1 official wife (Japan being a prime example of this).
What I don't agree with is the male equivalent scenario and comparison. Because it's not realistic biologically. Men instinctually are more territorial with their spouses and are also biologically more promiscuous. Which is why we saw widespread acceptance of polygyny within human societies but also widespread suppression of polyandry.
Now on your part. I think anyone has every right to dislike polygamous relationships. In the real world I'm also very much against them as well as other sexual acts before marriage. Part of it comes from my Christian beliefs and part of it comes from the understanding that monogamous marriages create a more stable society and that having your first with your eternal partner statistically brings more stability and satisfaction within the marriage.
On the imaginary front though, I like to dismiss much of my own morals to consume a story more critically. But I fully understand wanting a story to outline your own morals to enjoy it. It's also very understandable to initially have an averse reaction to a situation like that.
I personally think that Sylphie never took Rudy's promise seriously since she never asked this of him. I think the promise is more of a direct mapping of Rudy's former life where he lived in modern Japan which has seen a Westernization of their relationship structure over the last century and monogamy on the man's part has also become the norm.
Also yes I doubt Eris is gonna be fond of the situation of Rudy's love life or accepting of being the third wheel
Much appreciated your reaction though. I recommend Re:Zero next as it is the next great isekai anime.

I agree with you on all the other things except the "biological" reasons. It was much more common that a man have multiple wives than a woman have multiple husband is because patriachy. Men hold the money and power in most of the societies. Women are not able to have multiple husbands. Cultures that allow polygamy usually are sexist against women as well.
Men are actually not that much more tettorial or possesive than women. How many men goes to war and ask nothing for return, or being a simps for a woman they know wont love them back? If society permit , i would imagine they would be okay with sharing one good woman.

    • @captainvanisher988
      @captainvanisher988 Před měsícem

@@nguyendi92 Not really. Men can impregnate multiple women at once, whilst a woman can only be impregnated once a year.
Another top factor is paternity. Paternity is the main reason why virginity in women was so valued. A man cannot ensure that his wife has his own child if she is promiscuous. And the man's worst fear is raising a child that is not your unknowingly.
We also have the fact that women are more susceptible to STIs. Meaning that it's more dangerous for them to sleep around.
Men are 100% more territorial than women. That can be seen by the fact that women have an instinct called hypergamy. There is a reason why women flock to the man that already has women. If you've ever been in a relationship you'd understand the stark difference on how women treat you.
Lastly you claim that the patriarchy is the reason why women weren't allowed to sleep around or have many men. But isn't patriarchy a natural development of human instincts. If every single advanced human civilization since recorded history was frowning upon polyandry, then the logical conclusion is that all humans are instinctually driven to do so in order to form a successful society.

God or whoever the person reading this believes in, bless modern medicine for being able to make pregnancy go from a commonly fatal process to a rarely fatal process. I can't imagine how it would have been even a century before, let alone a thousand years. Glad Christine is fine, (I assume that would be your wife or the person reading this lol, not familiar with the channel yet) glad everyone is fine, glad Sylphie is fine too although I figure that this won't be the only kid they have! I didn't watch any of your episodes of this but this one, but I think I will have to go back and watch the series with you all.
This show is one of my favorites, not just in anime but all time. It started as a sus weird perv anime and now I find myself relating with aspects of the show in such deep ways. It's hard to explain how it makes me feel, but I do worry for the end of the series. I think what makes me the most sad is that it isn't real and that something someone made up in their head means more to me than most of my life so far ever did. I sound like a weirdo eh?
Sorry for the random rambling, sometimes it's easier to type these things out rather than say them. Not that anyone is gonna really see this, or at least, read this. Generally I listen to reaction stuff to feel like I actually have friends still, but I've lost pretty much everyone that I could relate with or share passions with so it's channels like these that help poor sods like me eh? Anyways off I go to watch your Mushoku stuff for the next two or three days, always makes for good company.

IMO, it's not that deep. You don't need to argue about polygamy with people in the comments or during the video and justify what you think based on another show or real life. In this case, it's literally another world with different cultural values and our logic doesn't apply, at least to that extent.
For them it's monogamy as defined by the Millis faith that is kind of unusual. For Rudeus, who is from our world, the situation also seems more complex than it is in-story. It's not an accident that it was Norn, a follower of Millis, who was the voice of the audience this espisode and disagreed with the whole thing.

    • @TheGenreVerse
      @TheGenreVerse  Před měsícem +1

We don't NEED to justify anything, ever. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but discussions are part of the reaction gig. One thing I can assure you, we don't lose any sleep over these discussions. I've been through, and seen, too much real $#!% to get upset over comments.
That doesn't mean we don't get "confused" by people that misunderstand us or completely ignore what we say and assume stuff. Like I said, it's all part of the reaction stuff.

People take the MT lns as gospel I swear and think anyone who as problems with its story its a moral thing not that they have problem with how it's written. Me and many others with the context of the anime what we have been told by charchters have problems with how it was written and handled like I feel like if they just had a line of sylfee asking roxy to have a one on one conversation before she desides we didn't have to see it but she doesn't know roxy outside of storys and as you guys stated because of the whole emotional aspect of it sharing with someone you don't know even if you are ultimately ok with it just doesnt feel realistic and as a story does a amazing job of maturely showcasing human emotions and I think it slightly missed the mark. But other then that small nitpick loved this episode stuff with norn and Paul's death was great, enjoyed the scean of rudy drinking at his dad's grave made me think hu probably should have brought a drink like that on fathers day when I visited my dad's grave. It was a great season can't wait for the next season.

I think the Light novel did a great jobs at making them more believable. The anime changed a bit. Like Sylphy was never accepting his "promise" cuz she knew he couldnt keep it. She was quiet at first because she thought Rudy want to left her for Roxy. She has to step up when Roxy was leaving.
Rudy messed up by including Norn in this talk. But maybe because of Norn yelling out for her, Sylphy is much more accepting of Roxy afterward.

I mean Sylphie grew up with pauls family to her its not a crazy possibillity she already considered it she knew paul had 2 wives. She expected rudeus to want more as well. I think it still makes realitsic sense considering she is not the one that promised rudeus to stay faithful its rudeus that made that promise himself. Sylphie never enforced a promise on rudeus for good reason. She also knows about nobles due to being around ariel who also of course have multiple woman.
So its more a of scenario of sylphie has been preparing herself for htis moment quite a while in fact she monologues about this before she even gets wtih rudeus when she was still trying to figure out how to get his attention.
