Myanmar civil war: Exiled minister says rebel victory is close | DW News

- China and Russia must end supplies of arms to Myanmar’s military junta - that’s the call from exiled foreign minister Zin Mar Aung as fighting continues in the country’s civil war. By current estimates, the junta now controls just 40% of the country, giving rebel forces hope that their dream of toppling the generals for good could be within reach. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zin Mar Aung demanded that China, Russia and other countries stop providing arms to the junta - saying they were being used to “kill their own people.” Zin Mar Aung spoke to DW’s Richard Walker, setting out the democratic government’s hopes for Myanmar - and the frustrations it faces in keeping Myanmar on the global agenda. Other issues raised: online scam operations run from Myanmar, Chinese mafia involvement, the role of India in Myanmar, and what Myanmar needs from the West.

Been following this war since the beginning. I am so happy for the people of this beautiful country. I have seen the news and documentaries with tears in my eyes. From Puerto Rico with love.
As a Myanmar, thank you for your kindness
Thanks a lot
Thank you so much Bro
Thank you, bro.
As a Myanmar, I want to be people freedom
Brave and intelligent woman!
Wish her and the struggle of the Myanmar people against th junta all the best!
Yes, in deed. Thanks for your kindness.
As a Singaporean, i really hope that the international community could, and should, help the rebels defeat that horrible military regime !
Yeah, but they turned a blind eye
@@lunazest7736no potential benefit in helping Myanmar. US supported Japan after WW2 cause they knew people were bright minded and hard working. Im not seeing that with myanmar.
@@satchua7367 That's not true. The US supported Japan to:
1.) prevent the repetition of the Japanese Imperialism in the post-war government as seen from Germany's Weimar Era.
2.) Provide security and diplomatic protection from the rising communist wave from the CCP.
3.) Serve as a logistics hub for other key asia-pacific allies (Taiwan, Guam, South Korea, Philippines, etc.)
@@deviousNPretty sure Guam isn’t an ally, its part of US territory
@@satchua7367You can’t compare with Japan and Myanmar like Apple to Apple. Not like japan, Myanmar has a lot of potential in terms of geopolitical location such as in the center of world most populated countries like China and India, and the ASEAN countries. The Myanmar can be the bridge or a strategic corridor for all these regions not only for economy but also social and cultural benefits. The people can be trained when there is a true leadership revealed and not under the junta suppression.
a Thai here. hope everything goes smoothly for Myanmar 🇲🇲
Thank you!
This is our foreign minister. She is very brilliant. We are very proud of having her. As we first heard of coup attempt and arrested our leaders, we got shock and depressed. She tried to lead the whole country and organised National Unity Government. Our Government tried much and fight back military dictatorship though we did not have well equipped army. Now we have been taking and controlling nearly two third of Myanmar. Still the world is neglecting and our neighbours are supporting military junta.
As an Australian citizen who has lived my entire forty-two years of my life here in Sydney City, I am disappointed that Myanmar has not been better supported by the broader international community, and I'm extremely proud and impressed of the resolve and resoluteness and determination of the resistance.
You are not completely ignored, I promise you!
@@evaburnz You are welcome
@evaburnz what do we have any assets in Burma in terms of strategic interests? Nothing.
We are going to ignore that, unfortunately. Beside, it's China backyard.
As Auzi, you guys are barely hanging on to US-Pacific alliance while trying to maintain vital trade relationships with the PRC. Auzi is the last one to have any influence over this 😂
Yes, this brilliant foreign minister one of the perpetrator who is liable for Rohingya ethnic cleansing.
And I feel bad for her low self confidence. They asked you what you want… stop beating around the bush and ask
Great insights! Thank you for bringing this deep-dive, and all the best for Myanmar democracy.

As a Burmese, I would like to say people's concern about Myanmar becoming Balkanization are not wrong. Even we have skepticism on NUG's capabilities sometimes. But I can ensure that we won't be ended up like Bosnia or any African warlord scenario. The reason is "The Internet".
While most of us only focus about bad side of the internet like spreading hate speech and misinformation, we tend to forget how it helps to connect people and learn each other. Every rebels organization has either fiber internet or Elon Musk's Starlink. Different rebels groups connect each other via Zoom, Telegram and Discord. They share informations, technology and coordinates each other during major offensives. It is kinda a blessing that this revolution happens in the age of internet. It couldn't even be successful this far if this happened during the 80s 90s and early 2000s.
Well said my friend.
We here in Australia are eager to see democracy prevail, and we support you all the way!
Information is powerful. Thank you for your post.
I am sorry but it is quite naive to assume that Myanmar's Balkanization is preventable by "internet" or information sharing. NLD at its height of power failed to broker peace between EAOs/EROs and I have no faith in NUG to pull the states and regions together when the junta falls. We have already lost northern Shan to 3 brothers alliance and has sadly become a proxy land of PRC. What about Rakhine? AA is achieving tactical and strategic victories in their campaign and Tatmadaw soldiers are dreading to be sent to Rakhine. When and if AA establishes an actual control of Rakhine state, do you think they will talk to NUG to stay in the Union while keeping in mind the stance NLD took during 2016-2020 conflict?
I have feeling both Thailand and China have proxy ethnic armed group
Absolutely, because of " the internet " we know more or less exactly what's going on inside Burma from the other side of the world within an hour or so. We are able to organise online fund raising events etc.
Myanmar ha estado en lucha mucho tiempo por su bienestar. Se les desea lo mejor de la vida y que la paz llegue muy pronto..Desde México 🇲🇽

I worked in Myanmar in 2012 to 2013, this was a promising time for this country. I enjoyed working there due to the kind nature of the locals. I wish Myanmar peace and prosperity
Those early years of democracy were a great time in Burma, people were optimistic had vehicles, mobile phones, and increase in real infrastructure, having witnessed the hardship of times previous to this it was obvious that the people would never accept going back to the old days , the military were afraid of the growing power of the democratic government and worried about being punished for theirs previous crimes

So India, the “largest democracy in the world” is providing the junta with military aid. Go figure…
They have a lot of problems with the alleged romanticism of their first Prime Minister. This is the consequence of being a narrow-minded realist.
What's strange? The US has financed right-wing dictatorships in Latin America for decades, providing money, training and weapons. Do the Contras in Nicaragua tell you anything, for example? The Sandinistas overthrew the right-wing dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979. It was an unbearable defeat for the USA, which supported Somoza. Therefore for years the CIA trained and financed the Contras using funds of dubious origin to attempt to overthrow the Sandinista government of Humberto Ortega.
India is barely a democracy. At present it's a Hindu Fascist state.

"No fly zone" doesn't mean just putting "NO FLY ZONE" signs. It needs to be enforced. Air superiority fighters need to constantly patrol the area. No-fly zones have only been utilized only 3 times in world history.
Thank you DW News. Although her english is not good enough, I proud her as Democratic fighter for Myanmar.
Her English is just fine 🙂. She’s understandable and she seems very intelligent.
What do you mean not good enough? I can understand her just fine She has burmese accent and its beautiful
Calling them democratic is Farfetch to me
My main worry is that the new civilian gov will not honor the efforts of local ethnic militias by giving them autonomy or setting up referendums if they are asked too
thanks a lot DW
I wish she be the Myanmar president after the war instead of Suu Kyi
Thank you Minister for your message to the world
Really glad things are turning out for the better over there huge win for the people
Junta is losing. Neither the previous unity government is winning. They (the unity government) are very naive to think that the rebels will hand over power back to the unity government.
Actually we dont care. We just want to live freely and democratically even we become city state as long as there is peace it is enough.
the rebels are fighting against a military government that took power through a coup. They're the best bet.
@@TheBomberbabycorrect mindset! Why is everyone worrying about separation as if it is a bad thing ? If everyone can have peace and prosperity, dissolution of the union is a must.
@@Tyrion-l2r Yes I have been saying Balkanization of this land is absolutely necessary for many years because this pseudo-union should have never been formed in the first place. I made the prediction that Burma will be the next Yugoslavia since I was 12. I am an Arakanese and I am confident we are forging our own path and hopefully other non-Burman nationalities will have the courage to follow the route to independence and self determination.

We entire Myanmar people support NUG and we absolutely reject the unlawful military coup. What we need is the clear vision from international community that Myanmar people will fight the military dictators to the end. All the chaos happenning in Myanmar is all because of military dictators. She has dynamic leadership qualities.Cheer up.
Even if the Military is gone unity is not possible. It will become a group of independent states.
As an Indian , my hopes and prayers are for the myanmar public to succeed and establish a democratic state
Actually, NUG or EROs are not rebel anymore, but Junta. MM military took power from People and still struggling take control across the country. Moreover, losing control area day by day and people will win at the end. ASEAN and UN are still holding non-sense 5points but super power like China and India want Junta to win this war for their strategies. And the West still watching this situation, non weapons aids has arrived.
Come on. The word "Rebels" is not even a bad word in English. It is Myanmar military junta's years of brainwashed education that makes you to think that is a bad word.
Look at Star Wars movies. The rebels or rebel alliance are portrayed as good guys.
Amen.
We urge the international communities to support Myanmar people regardless of food or any supplies from the borders and keep supporting us because poverty is coming towards us, which would ruin many lives.
Good Answer.

Intelligent and brave woman keader. Don't give up your revolution to re-establish democracy.
May God help my beloved country Myanmar (aka Burma).
We Myanmar people are confident that the junta will be completely toppled down sooner or later because we will never ever accept their rule. Of course, NUG has also their flaws and challenges, but upon whom we have to rely rather than NUG in such a dire political situation. It's crystal clear that NUG is trying their utmost best to work with international communities in order to bring back democracy and freedom. Daw Zin Mar Aung is one of the pioneers that is fighting for the country's freedom up front. We're grateful to her for the resilience and keeping the revolution this far. Kudos and Respect!

They need to have a new constitution written up, which can be presented to the world.
Brilliant speech from a politician. NUG is now grasping the opportunity cracked open by the co-op between China and some minority states. However, NUG always represent Burma ethnic group (the majority in Myanmar) but NUG sometimes has bitter relationship with minorities such as Rohinja and Karenni. That’s why Junta still play an important role in Myanmar. Both Junta and NUG still fail to propose the true stability in the area, so called Myanmar.
As per the junta govt, Myanmar would be split into many smaller countries based on ethnicities without the military govt. It's somewhat true. Karen, kachin, shan, chin etc to name a few separatists activity fighting for separate nation.
Long live Daw Zin Mar Aung. Thank you for your hard work. NUG 1st 100 days plan is crucial. We need to ensure to form the federal democratic states of Myanmar with unity. We all know the negotiation path is not going to be easy. We hope to have Amay Daw ASSK to be present when forming our new nation with her exceptional knowledge and influence that people will reach to their con-senses much smoother. China is our bad neighbor. Politically is not not right to say such words but I am sure NUG would know how to handle this wicked neighbor. China rushed in their electric cars at Yangon within these 3 years under fascism military dogs; this is a fine example of how China use our country for their sole benefits without hesitations. I urge NUG to be bolder in giving comments to the Asean, UN, and world leaders on their lack of practical supports on Myanmar. Sometimes Myanmar are too nice to show our needs; we, the people will keep our faith till the junta and all mis-deeds they have made are un-rooted. Myanmar WILL thrive among the nations and outperform beyond the world leading nations real soon.
He should have asked her what is NUG plan on dealing with the ethnic minority militant demands and most importantly will they allow Rohingya back in Myanmar?
Myanmar need Democracy we don't want military political in Myanmar county

NUG is only one valid government of ours. We all Myanmar support NUG government.

God bless brotherhood Alliance.
Im glad to see that there is some kind of government in exile,my biggest worry for Burma is that the fighting continues after the tamdaws fall(and it will fall).
People seem to have a very simplistic view of civil wars and the consequences,it is never good, look at the history books
This is same place where he was interviewing Indian spokesman regular viewer
Okay u right ,Are u happy?
Government without support of its people can never last long....
Once the civil society takes over in Myanmar and democracy is established a law should be framed to have the military only in barracks so that history is not repeated again and again
This Exile leader has not talked on different rebel ethnic groups that are fighting the current Myanmar Junta separately..
And they are a bigger group than the exile government..
Yup. That's called Burman supremacy mindset. They are notorious to downplay other people and celebrate birthday with other people's cake. The actual gains on the ground are due to various non-Burman groups who sacrifice blood and sweat but on the international stage these Burmans boast as if they are the ones bringing such results. Despicable indeed. But they will learn a big lesson soon if they think that hard earned territories will be submitted under their rule after junta collapse.
Long live democracy
Myanmar may be tge only country in memory to fight the dictator themselves
