Myanmar civil war: Exiled minister says rebel victory is close | DW News

  • China and Russia must end supplies of arms to Myanmar’s military junta - that’s the call from exiled foreign minister Zin Mar Aung as fighting continues in the country’s civil war. By current estimates, the junta now controls just 40% of the country, giving rebel forces hope that their dream of toppling the generals for good could be within reach. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zin Mar Aung demanded that China, Russia and other countries stop providing arms to the junta - saying they were being used to “kill their own people.” Zin Mar Aung spoke to DW’s Richard Walker, setting out the democratic government’s hopes for Myanmar - and the frustrations it faces in keeping Myanmar on the global agenda. Other issues raised: online scam operations run from Myanmar, Chinese mafia involvement, the role of India in Myanmar, and what Myanmar needs from the West.

Not like japan, Myanmar has a lot of potential in terms of geopolitical location such as in the center of world most populated countries like China and India, and the ASEAN countries. This is our foreign minister. She is very brilliant. We are very proud of having her. As we first heard of coup attempt and arrested our leaders, we got shock and depressed. She tried to lead the whole country and organised National Unity Government. Our Government tried much and fight back military dictatorship though we did not have well equipped army. Now we have been taking and controlling nearly two third of Myanmar. Still the world is neglecting and our neighbours are supporting military junta.

As a Burmese, I would like to say people's concern about Myanmar becoming Balkanization are not wrong. Even we have skepticism on NUG's capabilities sometimes. But I can ensure that we won't be ended up like Bosnia or any African warlord scenario. The reason is "The Internet".
While most of us only focus about bad side of the internet like spreading hate speech and misinformation, we tend to forget how it helps to connect people and learn each other. Every rebels organization has either fiber internet or Elon Musk's Starlink. Different rebels groups connect each other via Zoom, Telegram and Discord. They share informations, technology and coordinates each other during major offensives. It is kinda a blessing that this revolution happens in the age of internet. It couldn't even be successful this far if this happened during the 80s 90s and early 2000s.

I am sorry but it is quite naive to assume that Myanmar's Balkanization is preventable by "internet" or information sharing. NLD at its height of power failed to broker peace between EAOs/EROs and I have no faith in NUG to pull the states and regions together when the junta falls. We have already lost northern Shan to 3 brothers alliance and has sadly become a proxy land of PRC. What about Rakhine? AA is achieving tactical and strategic victories in their campaign and Tatmadaw soldiers are dreading to be sent to Rakhine. When and if AA establishes an actual control of Rakhine state, do you think they will talk to NUG to stay in the Union while keeping in mind the stance NLD took during 2016-2020 conflict?

What's strange? The US has financed right-wing dictatorships in Latin America for decades, providing money, training and weapons. Do the Contras in Nicaragua tell you anything, for example? The Sandinistas overthrew the right-wing dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979. It was an unbearable defeat for the USA, which supported Somoza. Therefore for years the CIA trained and financed the Contras using funds of dubious origin to attempt to overthrow the Sandinista government of Humberto Ortega.

We Myanmar people are confident that the junta will be completely toppled down sooner or later because we will never ever accept their rule. Of course, NUG has also their flaws and challenges, but upon whom we have to rely rather than NUG in such a dire political situation. It's crystal clear that NUG is trying their utmost best to work with international communities in order to bring back democracy and freedom. Daw Zin Mar Aung is one of the pioneers that is fighting for the country's freedom up front. We're grateful to her for the resilience and keeping the revolution this far. Kudos and Respect!

Brilliant speech from a politician. NUG is now grasping the opportunity cracked open by the co-op between China and some minority states. However, NUG always represent Burma ethnic group (the majority in Myanmar) but NUG sometimes has bitter relationship with minorities such as Rohinja and Karenni. That’s why Junta still play an important role in Myanmar. Both Junta and NUG still fail to propose the true stability in the area, so called Myanmar.

As per the junta govt, Myanmar would be split into many smaller countries based on ethnicities without the military govt. It's somewhat true. Karen, kachin, shan, chin etc to name a few separatists activity fighting for separate nation.

Long live Daw Zin Mar Aung. Thank you for your hard work. NUG 1st 100 days plan is crucial. We need to ensure to form the federal democratic states of Myanmar with unity. We all know the negotiation path is not going to be easy. We hope to have Amay Daw ASSK to be present when forming our new nation with her exceptional knowledge and influence that people will reach to their con-senses much smoother. China is our bad neighbor. Politically is not not right to say such words but I am sure NUG would know how to handle this wicked neighbor. China rushed in their electric cars at Yangon within these 3 years under fascism military dogs; this is a fine example of how China use our country for their sole benefits without hesitations. I urge NUG to be bolder in giving comments to the Asean, UN, and world leaders on their lack of practical supports on Myanmar. Sometimes Myanmar are too nice to show our needs; we, the people will keep our faith till the junta and all mis-deeds they have made are un-rooted. Myanmar WILL thrive among the nations and outperform beyond the world leading nations real soon.

Im glad to see that there is some kind of government in exile,my biggest worry for Burma is that the fighting continues after the tamdaws fall(and it will fall).
People seem to have a very simplistic view of civil wars and the consequences,it is never good, look at the history books

Yup. That's called Burman supremacy mindset. They are notorious to downplay other people and celebrate birthday with other people's cake. The actual gains on the ground are due to various non-Burman groups who sacrifice blood and sweat but on the international stage these Burmans boast as if they are the ones bringing such results. Despicable indeed. But they will learn a big lesson soon if they think that hard earned territories will be submitted under their rule after junta collapse.
