Even with stock exhaust in sport mode it sounds better than the R. Can’t match it for pace but having driven both, the JCW is more fun to drive!

Explained in the video - Hot hatch head 2 head. They're both classed as hot hatches. The RS and A45 are more power than the golf in standard form. It's not like the categories lend themselves proper all round hot hatch testing - just a bit of fun.
the issue isnt the comparison vs the 2 cars... but comparing speeds on cars with so much hp difference to tell which one is "better" is funny (made me laugh when he said that about 80 hp different isnt much, its 1/3 more ahah). As they say, if you judge a fish by its skills to climb a tree it will suck for sure. Everyone know you buy a mini for the fun go-kart feel that you cannot get in any other cars.

The golf is an absolute beast of a car no questioning that but it’s just like minis have a more of a personality as a car and just seem a hell of a time to drive might be being biased here cause I’m a mini owner but hey 😂
It might be quieter but definitely sounds better. Mini has a bit of character and I think it looks better inside and out. The golf, to me, just looks a bit bland. Was surprised how quick the golf is though

Watched this vid and many others trying to decide between a 2 year old golf R or mini JCW. Didn't need the extra space of golf as wife has a Tiguan, but liked the idea of extra performance. It was that Vs the personality, looks and drive of the mini (think the golf just looked boring and felt a bit boring to drive). Ended up getting a mini JCW F56 in the end and still loving it 3 months later. Do I regret it yet? Not yet, although coming from a rear wheel drive it's odd getting wheel spin in 3rd in the wet as oppose to back end stepping out! There are a number of ppl that say it's not fair to compaire the 300bhp golf R with a 230bhp mini, actually I disagree. When you look at the power to weight ratios there is only actually 16bhp in it (176bhp Vs 192bhp / tonne).By the time you've then also taken into account the fact the golf also has an AWD system to drive the difference is even less. Granted the golf will always win a 0-60 shoot out by being 4 wheel drive. However, from 40mph to 90mph (where your most likely to use it) there is really is noting in it, well half a car length (up to 70 ;-) messing with a mate. This is kind of reflected in stats (see zeperf for example). So for me, I was willing to sacrifice the standing start performance of the golf for the character and drive of the mini. (Also one hell of a lot less of them about!)
I mean the Golf R and JCW are not even in the same price range... The Golf R is a good 12K more

I agree with other, this is like comparing a hyper car against a super car. AWD vs FWD isn't really fair, let alone with 70bhp-ish more. It stomps the GTI though!

Great Vid.... Thanks Guys... I have had my JCW for about 3yrs now, same spec as the one in your video. (The BEST Colour Combo!) I have about 280 bph and 400nm from a plug and play which as transformed the car. May change it for the same spec but newer, undecided as I am still VERY HAPPY with what I got. Will be upgrading a few bits over the next couple of months, which should take up a few levels. Evolve Automotive have a series on a Mini Cooper S and took a stock engine from 192bph to 265bph, the also added, which I will be doing to mine a Wavetrac Diff, Bilstein Coilovers, Supersprint Exhaust and a Eventuri Intake, which is what I will probably do first as the upgrade funtions the bonet/hood scoop and makes the turbos sing! Also in the process of ditching the run flats now Mitch PCS are available in 18s
If yours is left hand drive I'll buy yours

I changed my manual Mini Cooper Clubman D (yeah, diesel) for a DSG Golf R MK7: The driving position is much better in the Mini (you seat lower), the clutch and gearbox was much better than that on the Golf R manual I tried (that's why I went for the R). As a conclusion having had the two cars, just for driving a Mini JCW is a funnier car to drive than the Golf. Needless to say the Golf is more practical and powerful.
Exacly, 2 very different cars for different needs. Im going for a car that will be my own TOY car not a "our family car that does everything", to me yes the golf is nice but it isnt a "toy" car, it a well balanced car that does it all nicely

Just took delivery of a 2022 Mini Cooper Countryman All4 JCW and wouldn’t trade it for the world. So much fun and so much thought put into design, both interior and exterior. Handles like a dream and is as quick as a rocket ship. Seems more of a proper adult vehicle and maintains a classic car feel. Thanks.

Interesting video. Once you get past 250bhp, you really need 4WD to put power down from a standing start. I have the Cooper S F54 and the torque steer is agressive in standard form, it must be savage once mapped to 260-270bhp.
toss the rft's, get proper tires and you'll be good with a remap.

Jonathan seems like a cool dude. Such a good sport... The only two small cars I would ever consider driving.. a mini or golf..
Mini or Suzuki Swift sport for me. Golf might be a great car but it appearance often feels a bit generic and boring.
Also being such a common car makes it a bit less appealing.
A fair comparison would have been the Golf R and the MINI Cooper GP.

Where I'm from the Mini JCW is nearly half the price of the Golf R (dealers take advantage of the insane brand loyalty) so there is no contest. Mini hands down for value.
I thought John accepted defeat very graciously! I really like the JCW but the R is simply epic. So quick but the 4wd makes it always feel planted. Understated and so cool and comfortable when you’re not bothered about going fast. For all of those reasons I bought one last year 😊

Different types of car totaly, the Golf is a know, very balanced fun/practical car, the jcw is just TOP of the line fun that you cannot find on other cars under 100k$. As I got some cash to spend, I would totaly get the JCW for FUN only and another car for practicality. If you need fun and practicaty with a lower budget you can compromise with a Golf R
Even if the mini was 300bhp like many stage 2 JCW are , being FWD it still wouldn't put that power down. :(

I just watched this, and I'm sure the VW would have won in a more proper place to do this challenge. Drier road conditions too. But as you said, the JCW did slip on the launch, with front wheel drive , wet road and didn't seem too fair.

traded the R for a mini. Both manual. Reason I went to the mini was heal-and-toeing is nearly impossible in an R, the car just didn't seem as playful. It's so composed and will obliterate the mini when looking at the numbers. In the fun-to-drive category, the Mini obliterates the R. The amount of drama when going through mountain passes is hilarious. The R is built a little better, though the Mini seems more special and goofy. That's what it came down to for me - thrill factor. As noted, if you want to get there fast the R is the way to go. If you want to laugh every 2nd day at a swb car bobbing around as the wheel tugs left right and centre, the mini might just be the way to go for you.
JCW is a very capable car. Not an even comparison though.

The Golf would probs still stomp on it from a 0 to 60 perspective. It's the whole FWD vs AWD , the mini just can't put the power down.
