  • Heartbreaking news that the Ontario Science Centre has closed permanently. Here is a short film from the early days, narrated by Bert Devitt.
Retrontario’s primary mission is the preservation, research and exhibition of rare videotape recordings (1970s to 1990s) recorded off of any and all Ontario (and surrounding area) TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. We also hope to create an ongoing oral history of this content through comments left below the videos. Please add to this evolving history, if you know more information pertaining to the clips, fondly remember them or have a modern thought all comments are welcome! I know it may sound like a cliche, but this place is truly a Canadian institution and national treasure.

A heartbreaking thing to see. I literally grew up at the Science Centre...it defined my life in the 1970's in many ways, along with the planetarium. Still paid it a visit once in a while as a teen and then as an adult. Was there with my young nephew in 2019 and was sad to see that it had become a shadow of what it once was, most of the thoughtful exhibits were gone and replaced with busy-work for small children...the worst being the "take apart old electronics with a pair of scissors and hammers and hang the wreckage on the wall" exhibit. My nephew was utterly bored...when I was his age, you could not stop me, I would have run off into the many exhibits until closing time. Even the gift shop that had been there since the 1970's was gone!
What's going to happen to the Emmet machines? Does the OSC still bring them out every christmas? Old Toronto is truly dead and gone now.

I remember the peak days of my childhood of going there a ton as a kid. I remember playing with my late brother as we spooked each other in that cave exhibit. I even think the lobby had some memorial to my late grandmother too. The Omnimax Theater was kind of scary as a kid from how loud it was, yet awe-inspiring at the same time.
But I guess all things, like the loved ones I lost must perish to the sands of time... Every now and then I like trying to take a mental memory tour of places like these as I lay in bed. Sometimes it's more interesting than actually going to the place itself provided it still exists.

Shame on this and you think this could use tender loving care. There Shoppers Drug mart Omimax theatre was amazing too. There was a room I remember where you stand and the voices fade away and you only hear yourselfs. I remember the keyboard and the bubbles rose up and the black hole with the balls starting slow and going faster and faster. Lots of unique things there I’m so glad I got to go again visiting Toronto you think they could renovate or something. Science is so much fun and a Bummer for Toronto. What are they Thinking. I’m sure a lot of kids and Adults in Toronto are ticked off.

And this is just another bonanza for his developer pals, who’ve been itching for him to make them even richer with some juicy contracts ever since the Dougie got caught lying (as usual) about protecting the Greenbelt. The roof of the science centre would’ve cost a LOT less than the new Dookie Ford Science n’ Buck-a-Beer Kiosk at Ontario Place, slapped next to the elitist spa that no one in Ontario wants or will use (except the wives of Dougie and his wealthy pals).
