    Mooring on rivers: it's dead important to realise that river levels go up and down, especially at this time of year. My neighbours boat sunk the other week while we were both away due to the mooring ropes being too tight, I had a lucky escape but all a tad too close for comfort

      If you're worried about rising water (as you should) when moored you can hang weights on the lines to allow for the rise.We do it in tidal areas all the time.You run one line forwards from the bow,another from the stern away from the boat and a spring line from amidship.The weights required vary by the boat but they will keep you against the bank.Plastic coated gym weights are perfect as the line runs through the bar hole and if moored this way for long times you should add chafing protection to where the weight hangs.

      Carefully check for leaks in the engine exhaust system (carbon monoxide), and ensure any exhaust pipes which don't also carry water are adequately lagged with asbestos or the modern fiberglass equivalent.

    I don’t think you mentioned CO alarms. You should have at least one and preferably one in every living or sleeping area. CO can come into your boat if other boats are running engines, heaters or generators near your air vents. I also imagine that slipping off the bow of the boat is a problem due to the strange angles, distances and lack of hand holds. Michael, from Minimallist, certainly managed it as well as getting a shard of metal imbedded in his leg while hammering in a mooring pin. Jono, from Journey with Jono, has also demonstrated that boating can be a dangerous occupation. People may laugh, but if you’re single handed, always wear a life jacket except inside the boat and, importantly, not underneath any other clothing.

    May I add this to your invaluable tips. Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by the incomplete combustion (ie. not enough oxygen) by fuels such as propane or coal and it is LETHAL. Complete combustion of these materials produces carbon dioxide (CO2) which will suffocate if not vented properly. Carbon Monoxide is lighter than air and that is why your working CO monitor is mounted high in your cabin.Carbon dioxide is heavier than air (lookup 'black damp') and providing your ventilation system is satisfactory will vent away harmlessly, if not it will SUFFOCATE you.

    As someone with very limited cruising experience, thanks for the tips, all helpful info is eagerly sought. Did hear one a few months ago, of which I have no practical experience but it did sound like good sense to me (maybe those with more knowledge will know better than me). When a Narrowboat and a GRP are sharing a lock the Narrow boat should go into the lock first, but when leaving, the GRP should leave the lock first. Simple philosophy that if a mistake is made the GRP hitting the Narrowboat should cause little or no harm to either vessel. If it is the Narrowboat hitting the GRP, even at low speeds, it could possible cut the GRP in two. Even a small Narrowboat , say a 25 ft Springer, will be at least six tonnes and will have a lot of momentum.

    Great video! Thanks for spending some time on safety. I've watched many narrowboat videos and see very little, if any, mention of the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. You've provided great info. Carbon monoxide detectors should also be in place and maintained.
    I've wondered about falling off as the boat is running? Do any boats have an emergency kill switch or cable that would shut off the engine if the pilot fell off the back? In gymnasiums, this is a common feature on treadmills. I've wondered if such a thing shouldn't be added to narrowboats, especially those with no rear railing.

    • @ThisNarrowboatAdventure

    They tied up the boat, rather loosely, in a lock.

  • @gillywild
    @gillywild Před 6 lety +1

    Hi Jasmine. Actually your lock bollard system is exactly the wrong way round. The line going to the boat should always come from underneath and the one going to you from the top. What you described is called a riding turn and with the boat going down can lock and leave the boat hanging. As you say yourself it is easy to pull up on the line and lock the line but if you do it may almost instantly become impossible to free the line again as the top turn is now firmly gripping the bottom one.
    Apart from that great video as always and I love seeing your happy face.

    • @ThisNarrowboatAdventure
      @ThisNarrowboatAdventure  Před 6 lety

      I am not sure you understood what i was trying to explain , no knot in involved and would just stand with the rope and ajust as nessasary.

    • @neilevans3808
      @neilevans3808 Před 6 lety

      Gillywild is correct. If you pulled up the line and locked it on a descending boat the entire weight of the boat would then be pinning the turn. Riding turns are sometimes intentionally incorporated as components in knots such as the strangle or constrictor and sometimes inadvertently created on a winch - which immediately produces a jam and (in my case anyway) copious amounts of profanity.

    • @martyspargur5281
      @martyspargur5281 Před 5 lety

      Jasmin's hitch can't jam. ONE turn on the bollard can't override. Please watch her description again, she is correct, and she warned against having more turn, which would be very dangerous.

    Why don’t people were lanyards attaches to their wrists attached to the keys so if you fall off the engine cuts out so the boat does not continue on down the canal which may risk a crash or risk getting sucked into the propeller . Many other people on boats on the sea have lanyards that cut the engine out in the event of a man overboard .

    • @andrewallen9993
      @andrewallen9993 Před 6 lety

      ThisNarrowboatAdventure Kindly explain how more co is produced by the same amount of gas burning in an oven with the door open and with it closed. Think of it as a chemistry experiment 2 x gas plus 3 y oxygen gives 1z of co. Does your co alarm go off when you are cooking? If it doesn't then it wont if the gas is on for heating the boats interior rather than food or water, after all the stove and the gas have no idea what you are heating, food or air. What the people you know who suffered from co poisoning did was run a stove that was not maintained properly and therefore did not burn the gas properly there bye creating an over excess of co instead of co2 due to incomplete combustion of the fuel gas.

    • @ThisNarrowboatAdventure
      @ThisNarrowboatAdventure  Před 6 lety

    • @andrewallen9993
      @andrewallen9993 Před 6 lety

      ThisNarrowboatAdventure Then please please please have your stove checked by a competent technician. There is something wrong with it. Calor gas when burnt should NOT make dangerous quantities of CO unless the gas is not combusting completely. See my earlier post re open and closed ovens, if it cooks a turkey for 3 hours safely with the door closed it will heat the boat safely for 3 hours. Calor gas when burnt with sufficient oxygen produces H2O and CO2 (more oxygen is available to the burners with the doors open) if there is something wrong with your stove and not enough oxygen is available to the burner ( wrong jets or piping/jets clogged by filth due to poor cleaning) then H2O CO and CO2 is produced. This is very dangerous.

    • @andrewallen9993
      @andrewallen9993 Před 6 lety

      Just another point, excess CO2 will also kill you but unlike CO you will notice yourself suffocating - the atmosphere will appear to be very "stuffy" or you will feel as if you are drowning or breathless if you are awake and will therefore take action. CO is dangerous because it binds to the blood cells that carry oxygen to the body's organs in the same way as O2 so you don't notice yourself suffocating until you're dead
