My father was a mechanic, but not a very patient one. So while I usually had my vehicles in working order, I learned almost nothing from him. Now that I'm an adult, I owe almost all of my admittedly limited mechanical skills to CZcams. I buy cars that are easy to work on and pride myself on at least trying to do it myself. And you are right, you really do feel like a genius when you get it done yourself.

I just went through what for my region was the most snow accumulation between thaws in 20 years with a 200ft long gravel driveway and a snow blower that kept snapping the cable that engages the drive pulley for the blower. It would work for maybe one morning then the following day the cable would be cut all the way through. Finally figured out it was a disengaging spring buried deep in the guts of the machine that had broke.
Otherwise what normally takes me 2-3 hours to blow properly I was pretty much shoveling morning and night for three days after every snowfall just to keep the driveway open. That eureka moment when I finally figured it out was certainly worth it. Living on a boat is packed with those moments where you feel proud of yourself for solving a problem and fixing it yourself when in a previous life would have been simply calling building management and then complaining about how long it takes to fix.

Good vlog! I think as things go wrong, as long as you can keep positive, you learn from the experiences and gradually sort things out on the boat and eventually learn the way everything works. Once you understand how it all works, it becomes less scary! Hope you have a more trouble free 2017!

Hi Jasmine. You're so refreshing and honest! We've only owned our boat since early December, but already we've lurched from one crisis to the next... and none of it was our fault... but we're getting through it. Nearly dried out now... and the stove works again... but we're told that all narrowboats get wet knickers at some stage in their lives (water from the tank/water from the canal) and we're still learning our way around the boat. Good luck with your current issue with the electrics.

I once bought a 20 ft. aluminum hull ski boat at what seemed to me to be a bargain price and then proceeded to fix or replace nearly every thing on it over the next four years. Boat mechanics wouldn't come anywhere near the old motor on that thing, which had earned a rep for being temperamental and un-tunable. I discovered the the carbs were used on only that motor for that year so I replaced them with the next years carbs, which I bought in a salvage yard. The motor ran perfectly and stayed that way until I sold the boat.

I enjoyed this video. Bit late to the party but I'm catching up and learning while I save to buy a boat to live on. Listening to the things that went wrong it sound very similar to owning a VW campervan. Things go wrong but you can fix them yourself and you still love the van. Can't wait to have that relationship with my home too!

Having a car i built myself I really know about things going horribly wrong!!!
Often its just a process of working through what the problem could be until you find out what it is. Further every time you do sort something out that adds to your knowledge and understanding of how the thing works and that makes solving the next problem you have easier to fix. One thing I recommend though is that you or your partner should learn to mig weld because having a steel boat such a skill will come in very handy and welders are not expensive to buy

What a great topic. I have done so much fixing in my shop. I've learned to change water heater elements and upgrade the relays that switch them, replace toilet siphons and other plumbing, cut and install shelves, fix light displays, fix the alarm system, replace equipment when they break and lots of painting. Every time something new goes wrong I feel so helpless, but afterwards I definitely feel like a bad-ass.

I love the diy stuff but am quite rubbish at it and having made several costly mistakes I just stick to very minor tasks. My latest one was taking the door handles off the kitchen cabinets so I could get a good cleaning at the base of them. I then put the handles back on with out any missing screws, broken fingers or damage to the newly cleaned cabinets. Not so much a badass as relief from not screwing that easy task up! lol

Hi Jasmin, enjoyed your vlog as always ... i have been boating for 30 years, i retired at 47 to live the dream to narrowboat march to october then go abroad in my motorhome for the winter months .... could write a book about my trials and tribulations on boats ... my very first one was a Dolphin cabin cruiser they used to make from plywood packing cases that aircraft engines had previously been shipped in back in the 1960's .... used to sleep in that boat with one arm dangling out the bed so if your fingers got wet you knew it had sprung another leak and it was time to start bailing it out and take it to the nearest lock to cill it and fibreglass it up! ....
So, 2 years ago i got my present boat first trip out it threw the water pump belt and my trip to the llangollen had a 2 week stop in stone while i rebuilt a cooked engine! but i wouldnt swap a minute of it because everything that goes wrong makes it all the sweeter when you are just pootling along the suns shining and everything is behaving!

Yep - I fully sympathise Jasmin. The first time I switched on my Webasto cabin heater it whirred and hummed, but nothing got warm. I poked around and found the header tank was empty. So, thoughtlessly, I filled it, tried again and got wet feet. There had been a reason for the empty tank, a leaking pipe. Oh well - only about six litres to mop up ;-)

Probably the list of possible failures are different, but that dosn't mean there are none in a 70 year old house. And yes, you feel like a badass if you find yourself successfull at fixing it on your own :-) . The experience accumulated also helps the next time.

You tell an entertaining story, even though it was uncomfortable at the time, good on ya:-) We are in a house that has a pressure pump and our "safety cut" kept turning the electricity off at the moment the water pressure drops (just when you're covered in soap), so to quickly finish the shower, get dry and respond to the emergency is very annoying. In frustration I pulled the pressure pump cover off this morning and to my dismay found 2 large tropical snails (they grow big here in Chiang Mai), along with piles of snail-poo!! Of course that was making an earth-connection causing the safety-cut to trigger and switch off the electricity mid-shower. Well I cleaned it all up, sprayed WD40 all around the connections, and touch wood it's not triggered all day. So that makes me a landlubber BADASS!!😉

I moved into a rural house which has spring water. In early June I lost all water. There was plenty of rain, but the holding tank was dry. We went without water for 6-8 weeks as I was looking for the spring that feeds our water. I found several places that made sense but as I was not sure what I was looking for. I had several friends come over and help me find my spring. Finally, I had one, and as he was walking on the wrong part of the hill he hollered at me as he found something. It turns out the line form the spring to the holding tank was under the trail on the hill, yes the one we walked on every time we went looking for the spring, and yes it was very wet up there also.
The problem in my case was every spring we would get heavy rains and wash the leaves into the collection tank. Now I have the water diverted around and I check it twice a year for issues.
We can all learn from our experiences.

  • @SailingAroundTheBalticSea

Yup, bad things happen. In our case broken fuel pump in the engine, fresh water leaks, but what we are affraid most is hitting something with our boat seriuosly. We experienced such accident in strong wind in crowded marina. But after that you become better navigator and begin to understand your boat better. And you are right - the boat becomes SHE end you love her :-)

    Hi Jasmine,
I was asked to help my neighbor launch his 42 foot cabin cruiser by Chris Craft several years ago. It was built in 1935 and was a dream cruiser. Being as I'm a truck driver he wanted me to back it down the launch ramp as he didn't have a clue how to back it up. As soon as it floated free I headed for the parking lot and after walking 1/2 a mile back to the ramp didn't see the boat yet I heard him start both engines. While standing on the floating dock waiting for the boat to appear he walked up behind me soaking wet and announced no boat ride today. When I turned around and saw him he said " it sank like a rock ". After a lot of expensive boat recovery he got it back on the trailer and after it drained out discovered why it sank.
He forgot to close the seacocks! He had three 2 inch seacocks wide open and had just reached the deepest part of the lake when the engines cut out. Then he looked down when his feet got wet and by then it was to late.
It sat on its trailer for five years before he finally sold it. Both engines had bent pushrods from water ingestion while running. I felt bad for him as he worked on it for 8 years before its first launch under his ownership.
Next time you have a problem on your boat remember it could be worse.

  • @chrisandjaneonnarrowboatpo3917

Hardly any things going horribly wrong. When the exhaust cooler rust throw so you get salt water on the cylinder-tops and is sinking rapidly, then thing have gone badly wrong, but still not horribly. (This happens quite often).
Have you ever had an old house or an old car (or two, so one is working, hopefully)?
Sail Life tipped about a book by Nigel Calder "Boatowner's mechanical and electrical manual" I borrowed 3rd ed from the library but 4th is out. It is a very good and informative book.

Typically my Hunter 37’ sloop prop walks to the port. After finishing lunch with my wife and another couple we guys got onto the Hunter and started backing away from the restaurant dock. I felt a clunk! The sloop started circling backwards to starboard and I couldn’t put the engine forward. Both the wheel chain (steering) and the shift linkage had snapped at the same time. My buddy’s wife said to my wife “What’s he doing?” “I don’t know” was her reply. We drifted out of the C&D Canal channel, I threw out a hook and waited for TowBoatUS. After 2 hours, when the tow started to drag us through the water I get a text from my wife. “Look to your starboard.” There sat the two girls, lapping up ice cream cones. I have since made all repairs and she is sea worthy again.

it pays to get some books and learn basic electricity, and plumbing, and mechanics, ( and navigation and seamanship) this will accelerate your ability to actually be independent. if you make reading some of the wonderful books written by yachtsmen particularly single handers ... and here I recommend the classics written between 1920 and perhaps 1960... you will pick up much of the wisdom and practical knowledge that makes living on a boat practical. Do consider some basic sail boat items like foot and hand operated water pumps.. which almost always work and never flood your boat or bed, keroscene ( paraffin) lamps.. which work when there is no electricity, also at least one propane lamp ( near the cooker) which will also always work if you have gas. There should be a couple of high capacity manual bilge pumps.. like the Edson. Do have a simple battery operated bilge alarm ( float switch , dry cell battery, and a buzzer) to alert you if your stern bearing seal leaks and is flooding the boat. Remember propane is heavier than air.. will fill the bilges and blow you up.. so have few connections, test them with soapy water regularly, and turn off the main valve when you are not cooking.

Here there's no exact equivelent to the canalboat such as what you live on. The closest would be certain types of houseboats, and even those would be based less on function than economics. If I wanted to buy a little two or four man canal cruiser, what would the approx. cost to keep it on a canal? I don't want to live on the canal, just jump on in the summer for day trips. Some little boats range from £1500 to £3000 on ebay and they look ok, am I being stupid and naive and it actually costs you a fortune? Hope not as I'm getting on a bit and I've always wanted to spend time with the better arf on the canals and rivers, before we kick the bucket :)

Squelching about the cabin in oily water until the bilge pump took over. boat was new to me and the bilge pump/electrics etc were still shut off). the tank had been moved to the back of the boat but the old filler cap left in situ (I should have used the filler cap at the back of the boat)! such fun - NOT!!

I currently do not love on a barge...yet. I am at the just looking stage and considering all options. With the current changes with regards to mooring I was just wondering how people manage work when having to move on every two weeks.

    • @ThisNarrowboatAdventure
      @ThisNarrowboatAdventure  Před 7 lety

lisa o sullivan the rules have always been to move ever 14 days , but it's more the range that's being enforced more as I understand it. I usally get a bus or cyle or other pi lic transport to work and rely on Google maps for directions.

What are the CRT like with people who've broken down and are waiting for repairs before moving on? I've heard some horror stories that the CRT are actually quite evil lol

    • @ThisNarrowboatAdventure
      @ThisNarrowboatAdventure  Před 5 lety

I don't really like to talk about CRT , I don't have much experience as we are never broken down all that long, when we have needed to over stay a day or two or for bad weather we just give a ring and explain and its not been an issue but we also do alot of miles every year. My only tip is speak to them when you know you'll need to over stay

I've been researching, through youtube, all the nasty things that can go wrong, for when I get my boat in a few year's time.
Sorry to hear you've had some crappy times, but I suppose the more you know what can go wrong, the more you may be able to prepare for it?
So, you have added to my 'things to think about' but it's in a good way :-)
Hope you have a wonderful year and don't have too many things that go wrong!
Also, a 'heads up' I have a friend in the met office and we're about to get a very cold spell, so you might get frozen in for a couple of weeks, it might be prudent to get a get a few bags of coal, water, toilets etc. This will be the coldest spell of the winter, and maybe the coldest for 5 years.

My Goodness Jasmin. Wish I were near to You Guys when things went wrong. I have built many Homes and a few Boats as well as Cars. Kind of Handy as My Bride would attest to. An easy fix to No Water due to a Power outage is to fit an Air Fitting into Your water tank. Power out simply pump some air into the tank and Ya have water. Rather inexpensive / Creative Fix. Be Well Your Alaskan Friends.

As well as being totally BAD ASS 5 out of 5 :D we have a master switch (like a light switch, next to the galley sink) which kills the water pump. No shower and both sinks / toilet dead. So it's like turning off the lights when you go ashore.
