You can take the man out of the journalism, but you can't take journalism out of the man! Nicely produced, David.
I liked the gentleman from Rugby Boats: a good interviewer and interviewee. Thanks, David.
I have no idea how ITV, BBC or whatever British TV network you worked for ever let you get away. Your work is most informative and with your excellent editing, your stories seem to come alive with each and every one. Field reporters in the USA would really benefit watching your B-roll work. I have worked with many TV personalities and you would have been at the top of my list when I was working. Keep up the good work.
I think that is the nicest compliment I've ever been paid (including in my time at ITV, where I was largely regarded as just another video journalist). Thank you, that's made my day. Cheers :-)
@@CruisingTheCut I absolutely agree with the above compliment, I worked for short time in house government team making department videos that would be for website. Your editing comes out top notch but also it's the little stuff, like making sure you avoid making a video when certain outside conditions are bad. So many amateur's videos often are so focused on themselves they are utterly oblivious to their environment... Your speaking skills reveal a polished presenter that you got as journalist... It's not easy I know I been there. Thank you again.
I’m late to the party and getting through mandatory at home isolation by watching Cruising The Cut from the beginning. Jolly good show!
This was such an interesting episode, great interviewing by David and really well answered questions by James.
Thanks for a no nonsense, informative video.
My wife and I are looking for a place to retire, and are weighing all options. The narrowboat lifestyle certainly has its charms.
I loved this episode, mainly because it was between two polite and educated people. Im glad the broker man didn't sit there and toot his own horn. Seems like a great guy.
Living in Los Angeles I have never seen your work on ITV so it’s good to see David Johns reporter/presenter, back in harness.
You may be amused by my "reporter showreel" at czcams.com/video/ZKkH8z6WxjY/video.html
Yes! David, your reel was most interesting and entertaining. I must say, as a forty year veteran of NBC-TV here in the US, Cruising the Cut’s gain was ITV’s loss...
Thank you :-)
I bet all the brokers love you...it is you and people like you on CZcams that create the interest in cruising the cut. And that interest became international with CZcams channels like yours.
It shows a way of life that is appealing to many people from all countries.
I should send all the brokers an invoice maybe :-)
Great quote to end on there: “It needs to float!” Wise words indeed!
Key takeaway: "It's got to float". Seriously though, I really enjoyed the interview. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to show this valuable insight that I am sure many will helpful. Thanks also to Rugby Boats in Weedon, Northamptonshire. For their candid and honest answers. Wonderful.
What a nice guy.. this was so interesting. Totally glued. He generally seemed a tad nervous in painting a glossy picture of brokerage but he also showed a very nice human side. Great video again as always.
Nice and comprehensive. Your journalist roots show in the bone dry professionalism on display here. Thanks for this slice of the boating world.
After watching dozens of Rugby Boat videos, it's nice to be able to put a face with the voice. An interesting discussion.
Have been watching Rugby Boats for months. Love nosing around other peoples boats. Never knew he was so young!
Very impressive, and most informative. I liked that guy, and I love your work.
I have no chance of ever buying a narrowboat, and still I watched this vid.
I watch many of the brokers for sale boats. Rugby does the best job of all in taking you thru the boats they have for sale. I keep looking although my present physical condition will never allow me to live on a narrow boat unless i bring someone or someones to handle the boat and me. Escaping the mess that we are experiencing in the USA makes it very appealing. I need to run away...keep on informing us as always..love and luck xox
Hes an ex-journalist which makes his interview soo much more professional.
A first class and very professional interview there David.
I'm not long from retiring and my wife and I intend to buy a Narrow boat, so for us this was very helpful. Many thanks.
James is the only broker I would use. We bought our boat from him and we haven't ever had any issues. He's a great guy and we always pop in when we pass. We almost went with a few other brokers, but there were varying issues with every broker we met.
Just by looking at the bookshelf I can tell Rugby Boats is my kind of company :)
Love James and Rugby boats on CZcams "and into the boat we go".....could watch their channel for hours.....I would buy from them. " very boyant" if you pardon the pun...
i don't normally comment, but this video was my fav for some strange reason
ahhhhh, the voice of Rugby Boats. Nice to see a face to the great voice. It's a Great Channel is Rugby Boats!
Great interview, answered a lot of questions, and nice to see the face behind the enjoyable commentaries on the Rugby Boats videos which, like yours, I never miss!
David, another great vlog........ I met this guy whilst working near Daventry, popped in on the off chance in my truck and asked a few questions. Very helpful gentleman, strangely enough I started talking to a lady who’s husband was talking to the broker and she lived in the same town in Cambridgeshire as me. Well worth anyones time visiting Rugby Boats. Keep up the good work..........
Bought my boat thru rugby boats. Absolutely brilliant service. Especially for all those reasons outlined in the vlog
Very interesting interview. And very professionally produced video. Thank you.
Nice to put a face to the voice.Great interview. Cheers from Indiana.
Wow! Loved this vlog! Very informative and reassuring! It was nice to put a face to the voice! ⛴☺️
Thank you David for doing this. It should be given a lot of thought before buying a boat and this lifestyle. This answers a lot of questions and gives a good guide to starting.
Thanks very informative. It boggles my mind that there is no “registration” requirement for boats, to track ownership etc. AMAZING.
It confirms Caveat emptor “let the buyer beware”.
Great Job interviewing! and James did a great job avoiding answering.
(Off Topic, but I bought my used truck because the person who wanted it did not put down a deposit.)
This was a wonderfully done interview with great questions, very informative. Your TV background really came to the front in this. Well done.
Very good sit down great questions asked by you . The gentleman was sincerely honest and streight forward.
Getting into some of your older videos. This is another well done one. The broker you picked to do this with you was a very good choice. I like the way he did not put down other brokers but said there were different types of brokers with different focus and integrity. Great questions and answer video for those looking to buy a boat.
That James is great, the rugbyboats youtube page is the absolute best way to see a boat before going half way round the country to view it in the flesh, the videos are very detailed and comprehensive, people should look at that channel, this was a useful, informative video as usual
Haha, how much did he pay you? ;-)
Haha, i was one of the lucky ones, got my deposit back lol
What an honest and forthright interview with all the right questions. If I was in the market for a narrowboat Rugby Boats would be my first port of call.
Thank you, David, very well done. I’ve been following Rugby Boats since discovering narrowboats a year ago. Watching their videos give a wide perspective into what’s available, both boat size and how they can be fit out.
Very informative, great questions - thank you Captain CtheC!
I think having an independent expert checking out the entire structure is a must-do before buying.
That and also checking the motor, plumbing and electrics too.
Because, as he said. first and foremost -
It needs to float. 🙂
Very interesting video. You ask questions like a seasoned journalist. Oh, wait. You are.
A face behind the voice. I've watched many of the Rugby Boat tours on CZcams. Quite stunning boats on there
GREAT sit down interview Video David. I've been watching the Rugby Boats CZcams channel for quite a while. Almost as long as I've been watching your channel. Can we have more of this type? Maybe marina staff, boat repair guru's, and folks doing their jobs with the CRT. I know... back to the profession you escaped from, but you really are good at it.
Hmm, interesting. I was curious to see how well this kind of "picture-limited" video would go but if enough people seem to like it, I won't rule out doing others. Cheers.
As an American, I find this lifestyle fascinating! Thank you for the information!
Different lifestyle for sure but in the US and Canada you have what is known as the Great Loop which includes the Hudson, river to the Erie canal to lake Erie or crossing lake Ontario to the Trent Severn in Ontario which takes you to Lake Huron. From there you travel through Lake Michigan to Chicago and the Chicago ship canal to the Mississippi, The Gulf of Mexico and around Florida and up the inland waterways back up to the Hudson.
When you asked the question, (what should buyers be looking for?) I was hoping he would answer , Hull and engine/running gear. Anything else like interior, Paint can be done with the boat in the water. A survey would answer these questions. These are the most important things. As long the boat size suits your requirements and the survey checks out, you can change layout and exterior finish a lot cheaper than overplating and mechanical issues.I have
known quite a few boat buyers who have fell in love with an interior of a boat and not bothered with a survey.
Thank you for sharing this with us all
Looking forward to your next video
Shame royal military canal is not part of the network
Having watched very many sales videos from this brokerage firm, it's good to see James's face as his voice is certainly very familiar to me at least. Cheers once again David.
Thank you David for that particular Vlog
Very interesting and VERY HELPFUL.
You asked all the questions that I needed answering
And I'm sure you will
receive a lot of excellent feedback
I love watching your vlogs but this 1 in particular. 👍👍👌😊
Once again very imformative and well put together ( anyone would think you were a pro ) . it is also very nice to put a face to the voice that has been showing me around boats for so long .
Lovely interview David and seeing more of James (after hearing him on Rugby Boats YT channel) is fun.
Great, informative interview with a voice we know well! I wonder if James' office has little pully out shelfy things for storage and some lovely cupboards squirreled away? Does he eat his lunch at a dinn-ett? Oh and does the floor go invisible when he looks down, revealing a nice clean and tidy engine?
Thank you to both of you for this! A good insight into the buying process.
My mom and I have very much enjoyed your great video presentations for the past year. Thank you for taking the time and effort. Paul and Anne from Connecticut, USA.
Thank you!
Great Vlog David - really provided a lot of food for thought… as do all your posts.. appreciate all you do ….
Excellent...very informative. Thank you David.
We have been bingeing Rugby’s channel for a few weeks.
love your interview style, its sort of a light hearted Jeremy Paxman... very concise and well thought out questions, Can clearly see your reporter background at play in this :)
This interview was extremely buoyant.
Really enjoyed that and good to see the face behind all those Rugby Boat videos.
Great interview, very interesting. Thanks David 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much I really enjoyed the style, presentation and content! Cheers
Loved this one. More like this would be great.
Excellent and informative vlog answering my questions and resolving some misconceptions. One of your best yet - thank you.
Those journalistic skills are still sharp! Great interview. Great vlog!
Thankyou for these really useful vlogs, they’re incredibly helpful in making informed decisions:)
And there's nothing quite as lovely as having a nose around someone else's... bookshelf. Which is in this case, impressively eclectic.
Boaters use it as a book exchange, take the books you've read and swap for books you haven't read. Also found along the cut at some Elsan points and toilets or any dry place boaters can find
Very informative. Thank you 🙏🏻 for this one. Narrow boats are so interesting. Fun to watch your vlogs. Good job 👍
Hello!
I'm a subscriber & love your vlogs very much , I m catching up on past vids . I have been watching "Jorney with Juno" & got me hooked on narrow boating !!! I'm in Southern California (USA) & no canels here the closest to it is car camping . Keep up the good work !!! Thanks for your time , Rodger Terrey
Another great one David! The camera angles and switching back and forth during the interview was spot on! I’m sure there’s a name for it.
Haha, in TV they call it ... "switching" ;-)
That was excellent. A really great discussion about how what to consider if looking for a boat.
Well done! I learned a lot. And I recognized that soothing baritone from dozens of Rugby Boat video tours : )
Great interview lots of the important questions asked and answered.
Ok, vote of hands,,,,am I the only one who paused the very informative interview to read the titles of the books?
That was great information! Good job from both of you!
Great vid and great advert for Rugby Boats. They came across very well. Many thanks.
First class presentation and gave a very good insight into the purchase process , keep up the good work, regards Mark
I've watched many RubyBoats videos, thank you for this interview David!
A very good interview
Very informative. Thanks for creating this video.
Great Video David :-) Good answers and questions :-)
Very informative video. The interviewee of course is knowledgeable of the subject and you asked questions that I have wondered since seeing your first video. Thanks for thinking of this interview.
Good explanation of the purchase by broker system. Enjoyed the interview very much...
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you unveiling the story teller of the wonderful Rugby boats. We to enjoy looking at different boats keeping our dreams alive for our future life on a narrow boat. Hope your planning to revisit Crick this year. Warmest regards, Chris and Denise from Abu Dhabi
Very interesting DJ and great information. And great to put a face to the voice behind those video tours of narrowboats for sale that Rugby Boats put out (I'm already a subscriber). Cheers, Hollers The Hong Kongoozler.
Once again a great video David, and I must say it was great to see the face behind the videos of Rugby Boats, some very interesting facts brought up in the interview, and it would be great to see other interviews with other people connected to canal life. All the best to you!
Thank you, I'll bear that in mind! Ta
As always David, a very good and informative vlog. Your works skills really are showing through. Some great info there which, I am sure, if anybody was in the market for a boat would find very helpful. Thanks again..
How funny, before even seeing what your video was on, I watched a Rugby Boats vid on selling Tess. I will say I thought he was older by hearing his voice on all the vids I've watch.
Very informative, great format and worth my time in watching as per usual :-)
Another great vlog and interview. I would say there is one thing that needs full consideration and understanding of pro/cons and that is the stern configuration, not easily changed and a place you will spend a lot of time. We have had cruiser semi trad and trad on our previous boats. Trad now with a back cabin but we are a little less inclined to have lots of family and friends on board. Nothing beats a stove warming your legs and the doors closed on the wind. Before that the semi trad was great. The cruiser was also very useful but could be a cold place to spend a lot of time !! Keep 'em coming
Yes, I'd go for a semi-trad if we're to buy again because even though I don't have people aboard that often, when I do there's nowhere really for them to stand to join me at the back (mine being a trad stern). It would also be a nice place to sit out on summer evenings as an addition to the well deck.
Very informative. Thank you for uploading.
Really interesting thanks David.
Great interview, very informative...
Hi David. Very useful information. Thank you. Using your interview skills. I love nosing around Rugby Boats video tours! For the love of Pete man, wear a jacket when it's cold and windy. Take good care of yourself.
Haha, I was only outside for a bit but had to take that intro three times until I got it right by which time the chill was kicking in!
Love your videos, David. They are head and shoulders above the rest. Your TV experience really makes a difference in the viewability. You really make me want to narrowboat, though that will never happen.
Thank you
This is a great informative video, I actually met James afew days ago while viewing "lady Grey" he was very helpful, turned out it wasn't the boat for me..I would definitely feel more comfortable buying through a broker.
Very good stuff, well done again.
Very honest -- good questions - can't ask for more. If you don't like the deposit issue, buy somewhere else. I think as long as it's clear you know what you are getting into.
Well worth the watch bro it was well done. ATB
