How Automatic High Beams Work

  • Automatic high beams are a much newer technology than the automatic headlights we talked about in the previous video. What makes one forward-facing illumination source different than another? Well, after watching the video explaining how the automatic headlights work, this video goes further to explain how the basic systems are expanded upon, and different sensors are used to operate the high beams effectively.
    Automatic high beams (in theory) take the guesswork out of when the high beams need to be turned on or off, allowing for the most focus on the road thanks to reduced time fiddling with the controls. Cameras and sensors are used to determine if the high beams should be on or not by identifying other vehicles and lighting conditions and making an assessment.
    Do you have a vehicle with automatic high beams? How well do they work for you? Let us know in the comments section of this video!
    Toyota, Honda, Subaru, BMW, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and other companies have various names for their automatic high beam systems, and may have slight differences, but this video explains how automatic high beams work on a basic level that covers most, if not all, systems.
    What is "Automatic High Beams"?
    Aside from being a weird way to put that, automatic high beams are a feature found on some modern vehicles (often with extra safety features beyond the base level trim) that will automatically shut off your high beams for you if a car is coming towards you, or if you get close enough to a vehicle in front of you.

    Bought a BMW with this recently, incredibly good feature. Must have spec on future cars.

    I recently purchased a Volvo with auto high beams. With oncoming traffic the lights don’t dim quickly enough that I constantly have oncoming traffic flashing for me to dim my lights.
    How could this be corrected? Camera out of alignment?
    Previously owned a Ford and worked flawlessly.

    Is there a way to lower the vehicles speed at which the auto high beam feature reacts on a 2019 pilot. This feature on my pilot doesn't initiate until 35 mph, which doesn't help when I'm driving at much lower speeds, as through a neighborhood.

    Can you help, when I put my car in reverse in the dark, the infotainment screen stays in daylight mode. I wondered if it is the light sensor causing this.

    Can the sensitivity be adjusted in an ECU somehow?

    • @CarsSimplified

      There may be a way to adjust the sensitivity; if there is, the owner's manual should have that information. Sometimes all they have is the sensitivity for the automatic headlights, though.

    • @CarsSimplified
      @CarsSimplified  Před 3 lety

      I looked it up and based on the first result I found, it appears that it is an interference engine.
      Also, I've answered this question on camera in a video coming out on Saturday.

    Why do automatic high beam switch to low beam at intersections when no other cars are present?

  • @stuffyoucando2
    @stuffyoucando2 Před 3 lety +2

    The first vehicle I had with this feature was a 2007 Grand Cherokee Limited and I absolutely hated the feature so I turned it off. It never reacted fast enough and more often than not I was blinding people coming the other way and would get flashed by these oncoming cars regularly.

    • @CarsSimplified
      @CarsSimplified  Před 3 lety +2

      When I was using the feature it gave me anxiety with how much it waited before switching the high beams off. How well it works seems to also depend on ambient lighting conditions. I've stopped using it, too.

      My China's Geely Bo Yue yr 2020 is just like this, never reacts fast enough so I also ended up switching off the function but my Mercedes yr 2014 , the auto high beam works superbly.

    But on oncoming traffic has high beams on and on ours auto high beams It turns off high beams then we will become blind know on coming traffic dosn't look in to it 😅
    If the oncoming traffic has highbeams on then our high beams can cancel the blinding effect .

    Is there any basic model of the ECU or automatic high beam system that I could purchase online? I would like to personally modify my vehicle that doesn't have automatic high beams into one that does.
