  • This truck was diagnosed as having a collapsed lifter and bent pushrod by the dealer who recommended to replace all lifters on the right bank. I did not find the lifter stuck collapsed, so I replaced the pushrod and electronically deleted the AFM operation using EFI Live.

    Mine has done this once at around 86k miles, mind you I’ve never been shy about hammering the 6.2 down, but I’ve never changed shift points, and it even had the cylinder deactivation disabled through HPtuners. Made a very audible lifter tick like noise but it could be heard even at higher rpm then after about a week or two of it doing that it finally completely dropped a cylinder and started flashing the check engine light indicating a hard miss. The initial sound has came back again at 108k miles of even harder driving, it appeared just like last time upon initial startup of the vehicle and not while the engine was running, it had actually just been running 20 minutes prior and I started it and it immediately started making the noise. I’m going to try to get it apart this week and I’m hoping it’s just another bent pushrod and hopefully I caught it before it snapped again, but we’ll see!

      I'd be interested to see if it's the same pushrod that failed. Keep.me posted

      @@PhillipBailey Severe bends on number 8 exhaust pushrod with a fair amount of material being ground off the pushrod by the lifter, with a noticeable bend starting on two other pushrods, pretty sure it was 3 and 5 exhaust pushrod, thankfully lifters all seemed good. Replaced all pushrods with CompCams 7645 pushrods. I’ve put 1000 miles on the truck and it’s ran great so far, thanks for your interest!

    That is a '"shame on GM" for sure with only about 60,000 miles! I wonder if this is going to be a problem on all of these? Anyway, great fix, Phillip!

    • @PhillipBailey

      It's a very common problem for sure. GM should be doing a policy adjustment on these. I've seen 6 so far personally. The dealer I go to says they do one or two a week. They just replace the parts and don't delete the option.

      MY Bro in laws did the same. Dealer charged him 11k. Warranty was out. This is why I dont buy GM Junk. And my sister has been working at GM for 20+ years adn we get GM discounts. They trade theirs right before the warranty is up. If you're ok with a note all your life, buy one.

    Hi Phillip,,,Thank You for posting this. May I ask what programmer you are using here along with your EFI Live software. I am in the same boat right now, Thanks again

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před rokem

      The EFI Live program runs on a windows based laptop and uses a proprietary interface with the vehicle DLC. The scanner I'm using is a Snap-on Verus Edge. www.efilive.com/flashscan

    I have the infamous ticking sound on my 2014 5.3 sierra. Im going to pull the valve covers off tomorrow. If one of the rockers is showing signs of play, is there a chance that it could just a bent pushrod and not a collapsed lifter? Or does a bent pushrod mean that the lifter also has to be changed?

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I've had a few with a bent pushrod where I've changed just the pushrod and did an electronic delete but I did have one that went 12 months and bent the same pushrod. If the lifter collapses you will have a dead misfire..I'm starting to recommend a complete mechanical and electronic delete but that's expensive. It's a very problematic system. I've even had the lifter collapsed after being electronically deleted.

    What caused the push rod to get bent?
    My truck just had the same issue, and curious what caused the failure

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 10 měsíci +5

      I believe it is due to the repositioning of the valves to make room for the GDI injectors in 2014 and the stack up of tollarances in the valve train. When the lifter is collapsed for V4 mode it sometimes does not relatch when switching out of V4 mode correctly or the lifter collapses further than it should. The tip of the pushrod can pop out of the rocker and can then bend. Disabling the V4 mode seems to minimize this from happening in my opinion.

    • @PhillipBailey
      @PhillipBailey  Před 9 měsíci +1

      If you mean to just turn the feature off there are several options. One is a small dongle connected to your DLC. Several companies sell this type of device. Here is one I found through a Google search...www.rangetechnology.com/products/afm-dfm_disabler/
      Otherwise the feature can be deactivated using a program called EFI Live as I did in this video. A permanent hardware delete requires changing cam and lifters and then tuning it out electronically.

    I had the same error with the trailer brake controller. The module bricked itself when the battery voltage was too low. (Old/bad battery). Had to replace the module (and get a new battery).
