A topic I've wanted to talk about for a while this week - Hobby Mental Health. It's something I've struggled with, and I wanted to share my thoughts on how the Warhammer hobby can help you maintain your mental health but also some of the pitfalls you need to watch out for and how to deal with them.
Don't forget you can find me each week on the @morehammer podcast and over on the Discord there. I'd love to chat with you all there.
I can also be found on Twitter and Instagram as 90percentgeek

The absolute joy on your face when you even just consider the idea of playing “Shootaz, Blood and Teef” was so sweet and really demonstrates the amazing impact of doing what we love can have on us not only long term but also immediately!
I think it's good to acknowledge that, as good as the hobby can be for your mental health, there are traps all over the place, and usually about the weirdest things, but it's frequently not from people in the hobby: play historicals? Someone will accuse you of being a closet WW2 obsessed gammon or Nazi. Worried about your painting skill? Never heard a bad word from another miniature painter, but people who've never picked up a brush will frequently be *very* happy to venture an opinion, like their hobbies are objectively less odd in some way.
totally get this, as a British Army Veteran with PTSD, i have been down that very dark path and one of the things that has helped me get my mental health back in check is the hobby, that and some great close friends has def stopped me from self deleting.
Great video dude, keep it up.
The hobby, it's community and some of the great friends I've made through it have genuinely kept me alive in some of my darkest points.
I absolutely love the creative side of just building and painting minis, thanks for an awesome and inspiring video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is such a great video. As you know I lost my mum to cancer last year and I found the painting such an important part of being able to take time out. It's almost meditative and I really miss it now when I don't do it at a weekend. I also met some great people and had some really fun games.
Beautiful video mate, well said.
This hobby has given me a lot over 24 years
Life long friends, plus an endless supply of opportunity to make new friends.
A hobby outlet, during and after a challenging military career.
Social lubricant for networking as an adult.
The company can suck me from the back, but the HOBBY is the best thing i've ever done.
Agreed, there is a definite line between the Corporation and the Hobby.
So sorry to hear of your loss and subsequent troubles but so pleased to hear that Warhammer has provided so much joy. I too, up to an including Covid (which turned my health and life upside down) had a pretty awful few years, the worse by far in my entire life. Warhammer and more specifically the wonderful and very supportive community around it undoubtedly saved me from a worryingly downward spiral.
Sorry to hear about your troubles but glad to hear the hobby community was there to help support you 🙂 There are some excellent Facebook groups I can recommend including the Miniature Mumblings group. Also check out the Morehammer Discord - we're a friendly bunch in there!
10/10 - fantastic video. Agree with all the positive things you shared as well as the points of caution.
Sorry to hear about your personal hardships with your mother's passing Ben. And looks like the continued therapy is helping you cope with some tough mental health issues which is good. Totally agree with you on the benefits of the hobby for mental health. I think I am just mental though lol. And I came and subbed your channel as you are a positive beacon in the hobby. I too and totally tuned off the negative click bait of many channels on CZcams. So hearing your genuine positivity about the hobby is much needed for those discovering the hobby for the first time. Thanks again for all the great ideas and making the video. And Gardnehammer is a now a thing I must try haha... Cheers Josh
The weather is just getting right for it now here, I was sat in my garden this evening painting an ogre!
loved this ... great work on this vid... this truth helps everyone
Really glad you liked it! Please help spread this video, I'd love it if lots of people saw it and it started more conversations about mental health in the hobby.
Cracking video as usual, and thanks for sharing
An important subject and you have covered this topic so well. I have had to promote the video across all my groups ToW, WFB6TH and 2nd40k.
Thanks for sharing, that's much appreciated dude!
Hello to you ! Thanks for this wonderful video and for share with all of us your life, past and advices. I'm following you from some weeks, but it's ever a pleasure! It's like a relaxing chat with a friend! Greetings from Italy
Thank you so much, glad to hear you're enjoying the random stuff I stick out each week!
Thanks for mentioning the Dadhammer group - I hadn't heard of it.
Also, your videos are an uplifting part of my hobby, so thanks for those too.
I'm so glad! I'm all about the positive waves!
Good stuff my friend. Very much enjoyed that and seeing our WHW doubles painting award behind you for a chunk of it! X
Need to get a best painted award up there with you at some point!
@@90percentgeek Let's double up on something again..?
Thank you for sharing. I've experienced quite a lot of both the highs and lows you've discussed. It's a great hobby and it is definitely one of the parts of my toolbox for my mental health. A therapist has told me to let my brain take a break and let my hands take over, and painting is definitely a part of how I achieve a calmer mind.
That's a great way to phrase it - letting your hands take over for a while describes how I feel when painting sometimes.
Brilliant and inspiring video and so brave of you to open up about all the challenges you have been through. I got back into warhammer during Covid and agree it's such a help. Best wishes.
Thank you so much! What flavour of Warhammer are you getting back into?
@90percentgeek Was into WFB as a kid and also played it a bit of again then again in my 30s. Then I picked up AOS 2nd edition during covid and thats my main game now. As you say in your video know your limits, so sticking to one army and one system
Great video. I love your positivity. 😊
Thank you!! 😊 I appreciate that!
greatings from Poland. I like your video's, You are doing great job.
Thank you very much!
Very brave of you to come out as a huge fan of the Warhammer hobby....
More seriously - good and kind-hearted video. You say you thought about covering this for a while so I hope you feel good about now having done so, I think you should. Sorry to hear that you lost your mum and in the circumstances that you did. You have made me a little sad this afternoon as you've given me cause to think about my granma who we lost also to brain cancer this time last year - in her case it was a mercifully short illness at least from the point of diagnosis, but I can't say much else to recommend it. Anyway that at least for me is just being sad in a good way as it's right to think about these things from time to time.
Thanks for being a boundless supply of positivity and enthusiasm in the online Warhammer world!
Sorry to hear about your grandma, but sounds like the ideal time to do some Warhammer. My Nana was the one who bought me my first Warhammer box many many years ago, and I still think of her sometimes when painting models.
A very important subject, thank you for this video Ben.
Thanks dude! Please help spread the word, I'd love to try and start more conversations about hobby mental health, maybe get #WarhammerWellness trending.
I like to promote Joyhammer for my Mental Health
Best video yet. :)
Thanks dude 😎
Cough; painting guides
Great choice in t-shirt again. I remember that as a kid.
But, that is the light side of things. I'm sorry to hear your story. There have been numerous touch stories from that period. It really was a very tough period for. The hobby has helped me a lot during the aftermath to cope, and I'm glad you have found all the things that can help. I've very much enjoyed your videos.
Thank you. I found that reaching out and using the counseling services available helped a lot with the grief too, and has been helping with the PTSD. But the hobby has been a huge help as well, so I wanted to share that.
I don't know if there's any Discord or something like that but in terms of text-roleplay my wife and I do that using good ol' ICQ
God I had forgotten all about ICQ. What sort of games do you play?
@@90percentgeek it's not like any official "game" so to speak. Similar as what you described we take turns in describing what our characters (and others around) do. It's kinda like writing fanfiction together. We do lots of 40k but also other settings.
"Yes to female custodes," what absolute brain rot.
A whole /pol/ rant towards the middle is out of place though, still nice video - for the most part.
You're entitled to your opinion dude and I'm entitled to mine.
@@90percentgeek Well done, you're starting to get it.
Good vid Ben. :)
