This is by far the most interesting piece of Games Workshop Lore I have delved into so far. I feel like I am a secret map away from being in the next National Treasure movie! From a half-remembered drunken story to a truth that went far beyond what I could have imagined. I want to reiterate my thanks to the Ex-Games Workshop Staff Facebook Group for their help with the research of this video.

I heard some divers went down to see what they could salvage, brought up a container and when they got it onboard opened it only to find it full of Dreadfleet. So they chucked it back in 😁
Oi! No disrespecting one of the greatest games ever made!
@@90percentgeek in box dreadfleet sets are going to be worth a fortune in 20 years.
Dreadfleet was incredible, and I’m a qualified diver…. 😊
@@hobbywaffleif I get the boat, you dive down 3km and I'll split the treasure with you!
@@90percentgeek Haha, we might need James Cameron for that depth 😁
...never has my scuba license been more relevant than today
"His name is James, James Cameron, The bravest pioneer. No budget too steep, no sea too deep, Who's That? It's him, James Cameron"
Give him a call, maybe he makes the whole experience into a Hollywood blockbuster!
"Way back in the early 2000s". Christ that still feels like it was only a few years ago. By 2000 I had already been playing Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, and other GW games for a decade..
I had nearly a decade by 2000 as well! Occasionally I think about things like the release of the Tau (okay, not so occasionally) and then realize they're not a "new" army any more as they've been out for over a decade!
All the containers are currently being guarded by a giant Atlantic Mutant Octopus created by radiation exposure.
Can’t we crowdfund one of those lunatic millionaire private mini submarines (steered by an Xbox controller) to go down there and get it?
I am DYING mate!
In the year 30k the earth has run out of water, the seas have been drained.
So Arkan Land will find these and declare he has the STC plans forvthe Thunderhawk gunship.
And thats how it starts.
Oh man, that's good! I need to commission someone to draw Arkan Land finding the lead thunderhawk in the style of a motivational chapel frieze!
Ok I still have an inflatable dinghy left after holidays and a couple of dustmasks and latex gloves for the radiation. Who's with me?
£75,000? I hope some lucky person finds those two vanguard boxes....
'Only $649.99' Never change GW, never change
No, you get one cent in change!
I was working for GW at the time. This was big for us, lots of people wanted that tank kit!
Well those Thunderhawk's are heavy, best take with balancing cargo on ships with one of those on board
Sorry man, my memory of my time at GW is very Swiss cheese. Watching the video, the story came back to me. Also, fun fact.... I designed the box for the Falcon 👍
Ha, that's awesome! I do think I remember you saying about that at the time when I interviewed you.
This was hilarious, thank you for sharing! Also a reminder the venerable Falcon is turning 27 years old soon, with the big fat 30 already on the horizon.
I was there.... Remember the story well. happened in the early days of 40K. Back when vehicles were in the red boxes.
So you're saying all I need is one or two of those robot submersibles they use on the titanic, a radiation sensor or two and a decontamination chamber and I too can get a metal Thunderhawk and all the beautiful Falcon tanks I could ask for...
Just think of the rarity value too, why the mission almost pays for itself!
@@90percentgeek I'd be doing a vital service to the environment by cleaning up all that lead and plastic out of the ocean too, a laudable goal for green agencies to support
@@maxkircher4671 you should get Greenpeace and other environmental groups to help fund this worthy endeavor.
My buddy had almost been talked into buying a Lead Thunderhawk. He was on the phone (from Michigan to the lads at GW across the pond) (yes, we made phone calls to order the coolest stuff) but $600 was a lot in the late 90's. Sadly, we never saw one in person, but its still a fantasy to own one. ❤
I mean, if you have a submarine and don't mind it glowing in the dark....
This story sounds like a movie
I really want a movie about people trying to reclaim them from the bottom of the ocean.
Blimey. Brilliant story thank you for the research and the retelling. Once again the chaos gods intervened to deny the imperium valuable resources
I feel like there needs to be a nod in a future Black Library novel where the front half of a ship is lost to the warp but the stern makes it back to port, but a valuable STC is lost in the process!
That Thunderhawk Kit was a beast to assemble. My box is numbered 293.
293 out of 250 ? so there where more ?
@@ArnolddeGans I don't know how many were made. My nice wooden box says 40,293. This is also the number on my Certificate of Ownership/More-Money-Than-Sense.
I wonder if they only made 250 to go to the USA, maybe they made some for each region?
Might be a worthwhile topic to research actually...🤔
@@90percentgeek I would watch that video.🙂
This is one of those things that make the world seem much more funnier place to live. Thanks for a good video!
It really is! I wish there were more ludicrous true life treasure stories. (I do like the idea of their actually being a real treasure map inside the back of the first edition of Rogue Trader)
I knew it was the Falcons as soon as I saw the title. :)
We're gettin' out of Bikini Bottom with this one!
I hope a lot of people see this, both as it's a entertaining video and so you can afford a sturdier table😂
Fantastic video Ben I'd only ever heard small things about this story. Great research and a fascinating story brought to life. - Luke
75000 pounds? So about 20 kits in total 😂
Hear me out...150lb test fishing line @ 240m on a roll = 12.5 rolls to get to 3000m. 13 rolls of line = ~5kg (~12lb). Thats a lot of free cargo weight free for a dosemeter to test if the medical equipment is safe or not. After that... how much do you want a Thunderhawk... specifically THAT Thunderhawk.
Let's go fishing!!
Brilliant video 👏 love stories like this, especially since I work in shipping!
75k? So basically a couple of carrier bags full
The saddest part: the Falcon kit is still the current Falcon kit…
Ah but it is a funky kit! I can't wait to strip the paint on the two I found and update their paint job. I've already written an Eldar mechanised infantry list to use them in!
James Workshop says no resculpt until all unsold stock is shifted... i.e. no new model until these lost falcons make it to (and off) the shelves!
@@kwest9747 to the boats!!!!
It may be, that the model is simply perfect. I love Falcon and its variants. Bought my first when it initially came out and many more Falcon-based vehicles over the years.
this was an absolutely fantastic story and video, thanks!
Great video Ben, enjoyed hearing about this one
so what you're saying is that there is a chance we can get that Thunderhawk?
Absolutely. How long can you hold your breath?
Get them fished out and soak them in Milton for a bit, they'll be right.
The full pair of Marigolds though as you wouldn't want to be taking any risks.
As I remember the North American Lizardmen disappeared in the late 90s or early 2000s
The only toy tougher then a Lego is Fisher- Price Adventure People.
This would make a great documentary, we need Netflix or Amazon to get onboard and pay for the recovery efforts. Reminds me of the one I watched about that rare Atari game they dug up from a Mexican rubbish dump such a fascinating story
My dream would be Amazon or Netflix giving me a deal to do all the insane videos I want to do. Fishing for Warhammer would absolutely be a video I would make!
@@90percentgeek and absolutely a video I’d watch too!!
Somewhere a group of octopuses (octopi?) are sat around a bunch of awesome coral scenery and getting down to some hobby time together.
Also, holy crap, I had that falcon as a kid!
Also also, I need to catch your vids more mate, these are quality
Thanks dude! There's a whole bunch in the back log, but you can subscribe to make sure you don't miss any too.
Weirdly enough when I got a Falcon in 1998/1999 I recall the box said it was actually manufactured in the US....
I believe they had opened their US manufacturing facility around that time.
@@ScooterinAB Just seems like ironic timing. Lost a bunch of Falcons to Aquaman, so the American factory made so many they came back to the UK :P
Great story! I had never heard of this treasure before.
Thx for sharing this great Story. 😄
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another fantastic, entertaining public service video from Ben!
Shipping containers fall off alot
Especially when the ship breaks in two!
If recovered, I wonder if they'd be play legal. Or if GW has specifically deemed them illegal to use since they didn't make money off of it.
I think they'd be more concerned with how radioactive they are than whether they made money off them (I'm assuming they were insured anyway, so they would have made money off them)
@90percentgeek it could be some of the last good useage of lead lined paint. Not that doesn't have its own problems.
I'd tell you to calm down a bit, but this is probably the only form of cardio exercise that you get.
This is clearly mental wellness, not cardio
@@90percentgeek SMH... What are we going to do with you, Tons of Fun?!
10 seconds in and being screamed at by a forcibly jolly persona was a struggle!
Sorry, I'm naturally exuberant, especially when I'm talking about something I'm excited about.
I get that but that opening is like full on, a little bit of build up would be better.
£75 000 worth of Land Raiders... They were £10 for 2 back then, so 15 000 Land Raiders. They're like £200 each still on sprue, so that's £2 000 000 worth of Land Raiders!
Oh... It's not Land Raiders, it's radioactive Falcon grav tanks. 😳 And in modern price, but 1987 price.
@@PaintsAreOp It was 1997 not 1987.
@@PaintsAreOp What we need to know is what the going rate is for radioactive Falcon grav tanks on Ebay. And not just what people list them for, I need to see some that have sold!
