- My husband and I are on a 12 day road trip through the United States, and in this video we finally got to see the Nebraska Sandhills! They are a national natural landmark and they're beautiful! In the video I'll tell you all about this fascinating landscape, and I'll explain the effect the Rocky Mountains have on Nebraska's vegetation. We spent the night at Arrow Hotel in Broken Bow. If you're wondering why we suddenly changed our clothes, it's because some shots of this video are from the day after ;) We continued on Highway 2 after spending the night in Broken Bow and the Sandhill shots are taken between Broken Bow and Alliance.

Great Job! I'm from Mullen, the town just after it changed to mountain time zone there on hwy 2. HAHA I see my older brother Colby has also commented on this video, just below here! Yea he's, correct. A bit mis-leading on the timeline of the video, but the enthusiasm for our part of the world makes up for it! Come back to the Sandhills in June, travel hwy 97 from North Platte up to Valentine, over to Chadron then back down to Sidney! There are so many more birds and the green landscape looks so much different than our dormant winter landscape. Thanks for visiting!
All right, thank you for the suggestion! I'm sure I will return to Nebraska one day. Really, I loved your dormant winter landscape, haha, but seeing it in green is surely spectacular! Thank you for your comment.
You can go tanking on the Mullen River or canoeing on the Dismal River in June also. 🛶
I’m from hyannis
I didn’t know Nebraska looked like this until today. I live in Falls City down by Kansas and Missouri and I just can’t believe it
Thanks for sharing. I went to school in Cairo and my grandparents owned a cattle ranch near Mullen. Nebraska and the sandhills have a special place in my heart
You're lucky to have spent time there!
I have lived here in the Sandhills for over 17 years now. I loved your reaction to the prairie dunes! ❤ Nice job, I enjoyed it.
Awesome! Thank you, I loooved the Sandhills!
Your photo is beautiful. Can I communicate with you.
my family lived right at the transition from sandhills to flat prarie. They raised cattle in the sandhills and raised corn on the flat prarie. Some lakes would appear and disappear depending how wet it was. others were always there. The creek that ran through our place in the sandhills flowed even in the driest years and provided a dependable supply grass for cattle
Nebraska Sandhills.....favorite place in the world to be. Come back again in the spring sometime. It will take your breath away. So pretty and there will be calves all over the area.
I think I will be back one day, this place was amazing!
Great video! I enjoyed all of the information!
People that give Nebraska a hard time need to get off I-80. Im proud of my state, Its beautiful. I wish you guys could have gone to Lake Mcconaughy.
We went there, just not on this trip :D One of the most beautiful spots in Nebraska!
Great video! The title was a little misleading to me because one won't encounter any of the Sandhills region between Omaha to Broken Bow. It's clear from your video that you continued to travel west from Broken Bow on hwy 2 all the way to Alliance. Again, great video of the Sandhills. Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback! You are absolutely right, it was after Broken Bow that we saw the Sandhills. I fixed the title and description, I'm keeping the video the same :)
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for getting off of the interstate and seeing the real treasure of Nebraska! The sandhills are a wonder!
They are beautiful!
Well, I live in the beautiful Ozarks of southern Missouri, but I moved here from Broken Bow. If you stayed at the Arrow, I was the architect for the Arrow East which has a parking garage under the rooms, perhaps you parked in the garage under the new Arrow East when you stayed in the Arrow Hotel (original). The Owners are dear friends. I spent about 18 years of my life in Broken Bow. I love the Sandhills area. As for no Sandhills between Omaha and BBW, I would disagree and most residents would also disagree. They consider Broken Bow to be in the Sandhills. Love the Sandhills (did I already say that) but let's keep this area our little secret, okay?
Thank you for your comment, and so cool that you were the architect! We did not stay in the parking garage, we parked outside. I too love the Sandhills!
Great place to stay and highway 93
Man I once got lost in the sand hills absolutely no internet connection for gps at all and traveled in a straight line for 2 hours until I reached a town and got a connection and now I always travel on highways instead of random roads
Wow. That is actually a good reminder that physical maps are still useful!
Looked like an exciting trip with striking landscapes along the way. America's natural beauty is off the scale! Would love to make a similar trip one day. Thanks for sharing your trip on here.
I agree, the USA has so much to offer when it comes to nature! Hope you'll get to go on a similar trip 😊
Thanks for visiting the Sandhills!! I'm a native Nebraskan and those are a treasure... I love to get on the side roads and explore there. Thank you and hope you enjoyed your road trip!!!
I enjoyed it so much!! Will probably be back some time to do it again :D
Excellent video and thanks for making it. I have traveled that road (Route 2) on a motorcycle from 1999 to present day each summer. Usually stayed overnight in Broken Bow/Thedford/Grand Island either going west to Montana or on way home to Illinois. The Sandhill Journey is a real hoot on a motorcycle. The police in Nebraska are nice folks as well and kind to old guys on crotch rockets like me. Merry Christmas. This was a nice gift to watch this morning. Be well and Happy New Year.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! Merry Christmas to you too, and have a great trip there next summer!
Why start in 1999? Such an ugly number!
im from stapleton ne,,, great video finally someone that says nebraska isnt flat
It really isn't :D
My wife's parents and my family grew up living in sod houses and dugouts as pioneers to this area and we still live in that part of Nebraska. Thanks for giving a positive review of this part of Nebraska to which many see as desolate and boring. We love it here and now the secret is out.😁
Thank you for sharing! I LOVE this part of the United States, I love that it is empty and quiet 😁 Nature everywhere
Amazing!
Thank you 😄
I have family near Broken Bow, Nebraska and a place called Merna (about 10 miles west on Highway 2) and I go out that way and visit every other year from my home in far southeast Wisconsin. The Sandhills area is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Nebraska.
I agree, it is so beautiful!
In the spring hwy 2 and parts of hwy 20 are the best drives for scenery in the country!
great video. thanks. best greetings from samsun, turkey.
Thank you! Cool, a fan from Turkey! 😄
We spent the night in Broken Bow, as you see in the video. The video shows the Sandhills region before it shows Broken Bow, but the Sandhills region actually lies west of Broken Bow. If you want to see the beautiful Sandhills, you will find them on Highway 2 between Broken Bow and Alliance, at least that's where we saw them :D
Before that hotel was a hotel, my great-grandmother lived in one of the apartments on the first floor. My grandfather's jewelry shop was in the town square.
Yes, Broken Bow and points east actually are in the Central Loess Hills, a completely different landscape formed by water, not wind, in fine soils blown out of the Sandhills.
I expect that you liked the song of the meadowlark.
Yes! I did hear birds, maybe they were meadowlarks?
Great video. I’m a native Nebraskan and love our state. Although there’s truth to the statement about trees, the eastern part of the state used to be a treeless prairie except next to sources of water. The early settlers planted the trees you see today and changed the landscape. There was a push to plant to prevent soil erosion, as windbreaks for windy Nebraska, and shade. Eastern Nebraska has fertile soils, differing from the western portion, creating the perfect environment for tree planting! Arbor Day started in Nebraska City in the far eastern part. Also a place worth visiting!
I wish I lived in Nebraska. I’m stuck in stupid Iowa.
Thank you for sharing about the landscape! I really find it interesting.
Clive UT to Wendover Nevada is 50 miles of straight road
Western Nebraska is awesome
I agree!
if you ever come back to the US and Nebraska in particular there's still a lot left to see. Archway in Kearney, Golden Spike & Nebraskaland Days in North Platte, Kool-aid Days in Hastings, Pioneer Village & Christmas lights in Minden, Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Strategic Air Command Museum near Ashland, Merritt Reservoir by Valentine, Agate Fossil Beds out west, Chimney Rock, Carhenge in Alliance, Lake McConaughey and so many more.
Also, don't be afraid to stop and talk with the locals, we're quite a friendly people.
Thank you so much for the suggestions! Will definitely come back one day, we have friends living in Omaha :)
I liked your video. You are both very pleasant and it was well made. May I suggest on your next video when you are processing it boost your speaking volume as I could hardly make out what you were saying. I always wanted to go here and ya'll were nice guides. I have my own channel. John
Thank you! Thanks, will keep that in mind.
as a Canadian 🇨🇦would it make more sense if western nebraska was on central and not mtn. time. love the landscapes of the corn husker state !!! great job !!!
Thank you!
It is very humid in the eatern part of Nebraska!!
Yes, that is so true!
Nowhere near as bad as Florida.
Try the trip in June, when things are lush and green.
Oo, great suggestion! Although I'm just to lush and green, to me yellow was fascinating!
Also a good way to tell that you aren't from here (other than your accent) is that you were saying all the dead grass is beautiful lol
Another thing you if you wanna see cows go to Adams land and cattle LLC in broken bow nebraska bc there are over 100,000 cows
Haha, that's funny! I'm used to everything being green, so I like it yellow 😄 Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.
Anyone say New Mexico, yet?
Ive been to Broken Bow and Calloway NE they are the true definition of the Boonies we had to back to Omaha for some Star Bucks
