- Humorist, author and longtime "Sunday Morning" contributor Roger Welsch, whose "Postcards from Nebraska" were a long-cherished feature on our show, has died at age 85. In this report that originally aired on June 13, 1999, Welsch paid a visit to Mullen, and the Sand Hills Golf Club, a world-class golf course constructed in the middle of nowhere, that follows the natural contours and biology of the Sandhills.

So good to see some long familiar faces, but hard to accept the reality that this great segment would be considered by many viewers to have aired many years ago. To me, as my folks & their folks before them would say, it “seems like it was just yesterday”.

Seconded. My dad and Roger were buddies esp in the '80 and '90s, and some of the stories my dad tells about their antics are top shelf.
@@jebsievers that's really good memories and good to hear that the stories live on. One of my favorite episodes is the USPS rural mail carrier in the sandhills. Told like only roger could.

I was taking my elderly parents to south dakota to see my sister in the 1990s. I was going to go through the Sandhills, until i talked to the attendant at a rest area in Nebraska, i told her i was going to drive through the Sandhills, she got emotional and said don't do it, its too desolate. I stayed on the main interstate.
What a fun clip to watch. I only vaguely remember it. Yet, it was marvelous on the second viewing. Thank you.

Excellent storytelling/pace/immersion. This vid was such a pleasant trip.
I used to show my students Roger's story on a mountain of corncobs and their recycling into various uses.
