    Magma Chamber is a name from League of Legends History that has a lot of sway in the community. Some may remember it as the name that eventually turned into the game mode Dominion. Others may remember 1v1 tournaments and other ranked game modes. Today I try to capture the entire history of one vs one ranked game modes and the desire for them from the lol playerbase - and how magma chamber was ripped away in a shocking way.

    Riot doesnt advertise the gamemode or doesn't give it enough effort/content.

Riot observed that, when they put a new game mode in the game like URF, the numbers of people playing increase for some time but then decrease a lot more than it increased, and they end up with less people playing the game than at the beginning. That's why they are making the new game mode temporary

      Let's release an alpha gamemode, full of bugs, balance issues and stuff, not much people played it? well, nexus blitz you are gone, oh, wait, maybe you'll be back once or twice a year for a week or two, not the "testing new permanent fast paced 20min games game mode"

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate Před 3 lety +5

      @@alephviga645 exactly. balancing is not touched on, along with things like limited MMR matching. nexus blitz is obviously quite rng-driven, so it isn't exactly very balanceable. ARAM with 2 rerolls already seems like it has reached max "balanceability", along with the rather hefty nerf/buff to dmg taken and dmg dealt for certain champs - and people still find ways to hack it for even more advantages. yet aram remains very popular across all servers - no ladders, just a pure alt mode.
      i think what rito doesn't want to admit is that they can't afford to split their queues into too many modes as it increases wait times in every mode.

    to be fair one of the reason why 3v3 and dominion did not last was because of riot themselves. if you look at the history of them you can see riot did not care for them to much unlike 5v5 and aram they were not balanced or patched much hell characters like kayle poppy and trendamere were able to go into the enemy fountain and kill there whole team and walk out alive since the tower did not have the true damage that they did on summoner rift. they just were not balanced or cared about on riots side and the comunatiy seen that so why would they care to play something they knew they could not fix hell 3v3 only seen one major rework/ patch and then it was back to balancing towards summoner rift and for a game modes that did not play like summoner rift got unbalanced due to it hence why aram is still strong since it was a gamemode made around the balances of summoner rift

    I think another important aspect that wasnt mentioned is that due to ARAM balance changes being tied to the Howling Abyss map, it's impossible to have a fair 1v1 there. If you pick Akali you literally deal 120% dmg and take only 80% (different from champ to champ) which completly defeats the purpose. Especially since 1v1s often end up being really close so you might win or lose a match due to the balance changes for an unrelated gamemode that you can't turn off

    I still remember how everyone was hyped for the Magma Chamber to release for casual players too. We may not have been given that mode, but at least we got Snowdown Showdown, which... Well, which also doesn't exist anymore 😢
    Personally I will never forget that mode as being one of the toughest one and especially one particular game:
    As the main goal was to reach either 100cs, first blood or first turret I enjoyed playing Syndra until that one time when I got matched against an Orianna. As it turned out it was the closest game I've ever experienced. It was 95 cs vs 96 cs before the last wave hit and we both were at around 30% HP. From there on you can imagine how close this battle was about to become around the last few minions. In the end I succeeded and won with 100cs to 99cs, Orianna barely killing me in the process (My Q killed the last minion exactly at that moment, when Ori's Q was about to hit me :o).
    To everyone who stuck by and read this story: hi!
    To the Orianna I played against in that match: If you read this, be assured you'll never be forgotten! Was a pleasure to play this game against you 😊

    Here's my idea for a 1v1 gamemode in League:
    It would be a best of three where each game the goal is to destroy the enemy Nexus rather than a First blood/100 cs/1st tower on a Howling Abyss style map. What would make this interesting though is that you'd have a ban phase where each player bans 3 champions and then each player takes turns picking the champions they'll play for the three games. They can play those champions in whichever order, but they have to use those champions and they can only use them once. For added fun they have access to Barrier, Exhaust Flash, Ghost, Heal and Ignite. However whichever two they choose for a game, they can't use for any other game. If the gameplay itself doesn't prove too slow as to be boring I think a gamemode like this would be really cool.

    I used to love snowdown showdown it was a great way to just warm up before playing a real game of summoners rift even if they just brought it back without a ranked mode I think it could be a good addition to the game even just to warm your hands up before playing a match, or even the perfect game mode to play when you don't have the energy or time to play a full game of league. I remember commenting about this one time when they announced the rotating gamemodes back in like season 5 or so where a riot employee responded that 1v1s and 2v2s will be looked into being apart of the rotating gamemodes. Hopefully this documentary brings some light to riot games that theres a large community that wants a 1v1 and 2v2 map even still after all these years.

    My favourite was teambuilder in season 5 I think, where you could premake your team so you controlled what champs and roles were in the game before going into a game, only problem is you never knew who the enemies would pick.

    But imagine how many fun ideas you could breed with this concept.
    You'd have the ranked 1v1 ladder and possibly seasonal events, where at a certain extent the game forces you to master champs from every role or something.

    This video shows why league NEEDS community open map editor, so many frustration comes out from the fact that players are stuck to what riot is giving them away contrary to cs players (for instance) who can develop themselves the product they want (and the map editor is rly easy to use), I know this can lead to a low quality editor that doesn't do much for its game and lets the community change stuff (like Valve) but I really like for example the forge on Overwatch.
    And please, allow RGM on custom for god's sake

    All the maps and game types should be available in custom game modes at least. When 6 friends get together to play league, 3v3 twisted treeline was the most fun, but removing that entirely means we either kick someone out, play separately, or play another game, none of which is fun for anyone.

    Me and my friend play league together time to time and we almost always start our gamenights (about 5-10 games of SR) with a 1v1 games for 5 wins, which means as we are similarly skilled about 8 or 9 1v1 games. I'd love to have a game mode to measure our wincon instead of us having to permanently be wary about our cs in case one of us was close to 100 cs.
    And yeah, we spend about 30+ minutes 1v1 and several hours of SR, but on average we go 1v1 more times than we go queue up for duo ranked.

    Haven't played Dota in long time, I mainly play League, but just in case people don't know, the term ARAM comes from the original DotA WC3 mod. It was a command you can input that turns off the top and bottom lanes of the map and gives players random heroes to battle it out in the mid lane.

  • @Brooklin10
    @Brooklin10 Před 3 lety

    To be fair, Snowdown Showdown took more time to find a game, select champions, load the game, than te whole match itself. Sometimes, you could win before lvl3, which would make the experience a bit frustrating, because you just entered the game and now you have to complete the whole process to play again

    Just imagine the possibilities for a 1v1 game mode. player skill at least in solo lanes would accelerate a lot quicker as you can practice 1v1s against more matchups more often and get more practice on a champion or matchup than you could in 5v5. It also creates a quick 5 minute game mode that I find myself wishing for very frequently. I think a 1v1 mode could be both a very good practice tool and fun game mode people go back to since it's such a short and easy commitment.

  • @ChrysusTV
    @ChrysusTV Před 3 lety

    I do understand the reason a bit, although I think their metric of how much time spent in the temporary game mode doesn't tell us enough. However, if we take the example of a 5-minute 1v1 game compared to a 30-minute 5v5 game, the system has to match _more_ players per minute with (presumably) a smaller player pool than Summoner's Rift.
    If 1 SR game takes 30 minutes, and you usually have 10 simultaneous games running in that time, that's 100 players matched in a 30-minute period or an average of 3.33~ players matched per minute. If you take the context presented of players spamming queues -- which consequently _forces_ the system to find matches at very short intervals -- and you have 10 simultaneous 1v1's running every 5 minutes, that means 60 1v1's are ran per 30 minutes, or 120 players matched in a 30-minute period or 4 players matched per minute. The system is having to do _more_ matching more frequently with, as stated, most likely a smaller player pool since League's primary game mode will always have the most players.
    You could argue that the system doesn't actually need to do much matching because those same 120 players are the ones who keep requeuing, but then...cool? The game mode is limited to that specific player pool and that's it, and when they stop playing after 30 minutes' worth of matching, the queue is dead? That's not great. Or you could argue the system wouldn't have to do as much matching as SR because maybe 10 simultaneous SR games and 10 simultaneous 1v1 games is too bold an assumption. Maybe there are only 5 simultaneous 1v1 games. Okay but then the only reason for that is either the player pool is just outright smaller or the system isn't matching queued players because of the aforementioned issues. Arguably, the simultaneous games of 1v1 should be near SR given matches require 80% fewer players and, according to the video, players will be spamming matches. So a significantly worse number of simultaneous matches for a mode that requires significantly fewer players per match than SR just outright means the game mode isn't popular.
    If you keep it at 10 simultaneous games to at least keep it on par with SR, then the example provided in the video of someone spamming 1v1's for the equivalent time of 1 SR paired with metric of only 1% overall game time implies that the player plays in bursts and then stops queuing. So great, the player "cares" about the game mode a lot because he _iterates_ rapidly, but he's ultimately _not_ spending as much time as an eligible player as someone who plays SR might. Someone who plays SR might might play 2-3 games, so they are an eligible player for a total of 90 minutes in a mode that doesn't have to match as many players per minute as a 1v1. And if you really wanted to be a stickler about numbers, you could take the 1% figure of overall game time and use that to estimate someone spending 30 minutes as an eligible player for 1v1's is spending 3,000 minutes as an eligible player for SR since the 1v1 represents 1% of play time. Whereas someone playing just 30-minutes of 1v1's is playing "more" matches but is spending _less_ time in a game mode that requires _more_ players per minute. And people already complain about queue times in League's most popular game modes...

    There are so many amazing game-modes going to waste. I've been dying to play Ascension, Blood Moon, and Siege. The worst part is, now that the boards are gone, there's no way to voice displeasure. Most posts on the subreddit that paint riot negatively get deleted, so players have no input anymore.
    Other players have told me they really want the PvE gamemodes back, like Doom Bots and Star Guardian.
