  • You made it to the Hamburger Series Finale! I’m assuming you know what that means by now 😂 😂 😂
    I know, it MAY have felt like we were done last week. We already sealed the beautifully detailed pitt pen doodling layer with mod podge. That should be it right?
    Not quite…
    You know I’m a HUGE mod podge fan, but as the final layer in mixed media painting on paper, canvas, or wood… this isn’t gonna seal the deal.
    In today’s video, I’ll demo not one, but NINE artist vs craft grade varnishes to show you which ones will do the trick, and which ones will last a lifetime. One amazing product will EVEN make your artwork look more vibrant than it already does. (I know - I didn’t think that was possible either!).
    This same product (hint: by Liquitex), EVEN got me to fall in love with a gloss finish, when I’m typically a matte girl!
    Come hang out with me in my studio. We’ll try out 5 products you can pour and brush on, and 4 that come as a spray varnish.
    I’ll teach you how to apply varnish to protect your art journal pages to keep them from sticking together, and how to varnish a painting, once your masterpiece is done.
    Which varnishes are stinky? Which one takes forever to dry? Which one is JUST right?
    Press play to find out in this mixed media art supply product comparison & review!

    • @KarenCampbellArtist
      @KarenCampbellArtist  Před 4 lety

      Great question!! If you really hate the smearing then I don't recommend working in dyes and watercolors because they are just too reactive. Waterproof inks are awesome tho!! • @KarenCampbellArtist
      @KarenCampbellArtist  Před 3 lety +1

      I mean I guess so! I just think spraying is easy and made for the job and gel plate would leave gloppy areas you’d probably be pretty tempted to smooth out...with a brush...and then you’re back to that again 😂 but maybe that’s just me! Never actually tried it so I can’t rightly knock it 👍

      If you don’t want your Stabilo to move then you’d just want to use a non watersoluble pencil instead. So grab a regular colored pencil instead, that way you don’t need to worry about fixing anything or ruining anything! Only reach for your Stabilo when you DO want it to smear!

    Hi Karen! This was a great video on varnishes. I really appreciate that you are out there teaching and spreading the word on the differences (and importance) of the various layers- particular between a sealing layer and a varnish layer!!!
    I have a question for you that you didn't touch on in the video. Have you ever used the liquitex varnish in your art journal as a final layer? And if so, did the pages stick together or did it work like the spray varnish you love?
    I love the Americana finishing spray, BUT, I do not have great ventilation in my art studio, so it's not ideal to use in my art space. I too love the liquitex varnish and have both the glossy and matte, but have not tried it on my art journal pages.
    I just want to prevent the sticking of pages, but I'd prefer NOT to use a wax based sealer or a stinky fumed spray. You know?
    I appreciated your opinion! Thanks again for sharing this info - it is so helpful!!

    • @KarenCampbellArtist
      @KarenCampbellArtist  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't use brush ons in my journals, only sprays and YES, I only spray outside, I can't believe I didn't even touch on that either! Brush on means too much of a chance to . have a thicker area that may stay sticky? Only one way to find out is to try it, right? I bet if you used Matte you'd be fine!

    • @devinschuyler
      @devinschuyler Před 4 lety

      @@KarenCampbellArtist - aaaaah, yes. That makes a lot of sense about brush on running the risk of being too thick and causing stick-age. Lol.

      @KarenCampbellArtist  Před 4 lety

      I understood lead based paints to have been banned in 1978 (except commercial paints), which ones are lead based from the ones I was testing? I find only the sprays keep my pages from sticking. Some people rub waxy candles all over their pages, maybe that would sit better for you?

      @@KarenCampbellArtist The lead based product wasn't among the ones you were reviewing. Being unable to find the Americana anywhere, it was either sold out on most suppliers or just not offered. I searched for anything that I could substitute for it when I came across the lead one. I can't remember where I saw that one. My work is far from fine art but I love that satiny sheen your paintings have and was hoping to replicate that. Wax does add an interesting dimension to collage and I love the encaustic look. Hi Karen, I have loved the whole series and am so grateful for your sharing your vast knowledge and experience! Hopefully headed over to join the mixed media society soon! Meanwhile...a question. I do most of my mixed media work in my Bible. I have never varnished it. Now you've got me thinking I should. Since for the most part there are no pages facing each other that both have paint I haven't had much sticking, but I'm supposing if it's allowed to sit for weeks or months it might. But they are mighty thin pages...you know of anyone who spray varnishes pages like those? Whatcha think?

    • @KarenCampbellArtist

      It all depends on what supplies you're using. If you aren't using gobs of sealants and acrylic paint then there probably isn't a need to and you're fine!

      Hi there!! I am not 100% sure if it is the same. I know Liquitex has separated their products into green and orange labels for a reason but there are a LOT of appropriate products on the market so just because I didnt mention it doesnt mean it isn't awesome and/or that you can't use it! Liquitex, as a brand, you can always trust though, and if it's a final varnish/finished you are probably good to go with that one! a hard surface from a high gloss sounds amazing, I wouldn't hesitate using that one if you like gloss!

But, I am doing many projects and simply don't have the space to allow for all that time. I need to varnish them soon so they won't stick together once I store them. What is your advice? Great question Carolyn! Okay for the record I have not used that product si I cannot be positive but typically you can "lock in" most any watersoluble product with a spray acrylic sealer (like my face I mention in this video) without reactivating the product. Do not use a brush on, as that would most certainly end in disaster! If you want to keep working over that layer you can, I am not sure it would stay put (as I haven't tried it, like I said) but my guess is that it would!

    • @KarenCampbellArtist
      @KarenCampbellArtist  Před 3 lety

      I'm so sorry!! The Varnish has to be the LAST layer. Once you apply varnish you cannot put anything over top. Also the Polyurethane is oil based and the other supplies are waterbased underneath and same rule applies to oil based products. When used in mixed media, any oil based products have to go on TOP only, and be the final layer because oil and water don't mix. But even if your Varnish was waterbased, that would still go last on top. I hope that helps!!!
