Golden Matte Medium is stupendous to work with. As a sealer through out your work process and a final sealer, I use 3 coats.
Love your processes. You have some very beautiful work! I haven't worked with ink before. I use house paints, acrylics, oils, watercolors and gold leafing.
Tyfs your techniques and talents!
I would love the hamburger pdf to do some art classes with my kiddos!! Thank you for all of these awesome videos!
THANKS so much! You're a Doll! I really like Golden Matte Gel if I need just a bit of tooth for layering product such as colored pencil. It has a beautiful viscosity. I'd avoid multiple layers of a matte product if I wanted to keep the initial layers brilliant. I love how you used the Dr Ph Martin inks. I attempted using them watered down a la watercolor style for Inktober, but the technique didn't cooperate with the mixed media journal I used. Looking forward to using them on a surface more like what you did here. XOXOXO
Love the vase. Make me want to tear up sone phone book pages and create something on canvas. You are so creative girlfriend.
Thank you for all this wonderful information!
I would love the hamburger pdf

Great to see the differences of sealants! I have had trouble in the past with my matte Modge podge remaining tacky even after the final sealant spray. Not sure if I just got a bad batch? I will have to buy another bottle and try it again.
I think sometimes it has a lot to do with environmental factors as well! But the varnish sprays (episode 8!) help take care of that!! So you're good, even with a sticky layer!!
I would really like the hamburger pdf, you inspire me soo much so I have started with mixed media in an old book :)
Thanks so much, Malin! Here is the hamburger PDF: awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/

Hi Karen - you're so awesome, thanks for all your great videos. Question: if I am going to resin a large wood canvas board with just magazine clippings glued to it (I painted the wood white first), what do you recommend to seal it before doing the resin? I know some sealants can make the magazine translucent and don't want to see through to the other side. Also (bonus question!), do you think the resin process is easy enough, or should I hire someone to do it? Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Wondering if Mod Podge is ideal, or if you suggest one of the others you tested?
OMG ... I can't believe I found your channel. This video is awesome. I'm a painter wanting to dabble into mixed media and I am so confused on what to use when and what can you paint on and not paint on ...blah, blah, blah. Your Hamburger Cheat Sheet is my answer. I need it please. Thank you!

Thank you! I’ve always wondered about sealants. They are kinda expensive to experiment with just to find out what they do.
Could not agree more! I think that's why I didn't do this video until right now!
Karen Campbell, Artist well thanks again and thank you to your Patrion supporters for helping you do it.

Wow, your vases are beautiful!! Another fantastic video and insight into products. I just received a couple more of the lucas paints because they are amazing (imho) & a metallic version of the blue Posca pen ~ Lushness personified!!
I am obsessed with canvases right now, WHERE did you find those mini rectangular ones? I NEED some. "Please say Amazon, please🙀!" My package that I meant to send to you ages ago is still being added to so you can't have it yet?! Who knows, you might receive it for the holidays of 2020😂🤦♀️.
Great, as always, to hear you and watch you work your magic (& your be-hind off) so that we may gain more knowhow! Take a ton of care. Ttfn👋😁🌟😺🐾🐾
HI!!!! Those little canvases I just found at my little local craft store, I love weird sizes! I'm 100% sure you can find them on Amazon! Thank you (as always) for your kind words!! And I HOPE YOU HAVE FUN MAKING MIXED MEDIA MAGIC this holiday season!!! (and did somebody say package?!).......

Excellent comparisons Karen, thank you. I'm not a huge Mod Podge fan myself and I don't always have the budget for Liquitex & Golden (love those products) so the Wellbond is something I'll definitely try. Plus where I'm located it's more economical & the hardware store is literally just around the corner from me 👍
Hi Karen I am brand new and I am thrilled by your guidelines.

Great demo and review. Love your art style. My understanding is that Krylon Kamar Varnish is only for the final (layer 7) step to seal finished product (and yes it is very stinky). I would use Krylon Workable Fixative spray for sealing interim layers. I do some alcohol ink or pastel projects. So, for layer 7, I would use a 2 step process: Step 1: Varnish Protective Finish using Krylon Kamar (fixes medium so that it doesn’t smear or move when applying other products), then Step 2: Final Sealant Finish such as Krylon Satin or Matte Finish or Krylon Triple Thick Clear Glaze, or Krylon UV Resistant Clear if going to be exposed to sun.
Hey Cindy! Thanks so much! I love hearing what your process is, thanks for sharing!
i would like the hamburger cheatsheet. I have just found your videos and this is just what I'm looking for.
Thanks for watching and glad to have you here, Donna!

Hi there loving your videos, would love to get the Pdf you mentioned for reference. Of the many sealants you show, which would you reccomend for oil pastels? Love working with them but they do make your journal messy unfortunately
Thanks so much for watching, Trish! Check this out and let me know if you have any questions:

Great video. Bookmarked. Question: Can you use water color ground between layers and/or as a sealer?
Thanks! Technically yes, but remember that watercolor ground isn't clear, so you'll be covering up your ENTIRE layer with a semi-transparent white film, which, if it's cool with you, is cool with me! If you're following along with my whole "hamburger process" then you really will want to reach for a sealant on the last layer (watercolor ground is like gesso, typically the FIRST layer of any project as it's surface prep). So that may be awesome for your first round of sealant, you probably won't want that for your last layer (see page 2 of the PDF, here is the link, you'll want to download this when you watch Episode 5 of this series awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-supplies/) or you'll just be covering over everything. I hope that makes sense! Feel free to ask any more questions!
I would love a 9 page explanation on mediums hamburger style
Hi Cheryl, thanks for watching!

Hello love the information that you provide It's very helpful is it possible to get the PDF for the hamburger layering tips. I greatly appreciate it and keep those videos coming they're awesome

I just found this video video and your channel and have subscribed. Want to watch all of them! I would love the PDF and I have a question. I have an art journal and have never sealed a finished page, no matter the medium used. Should I go back and do that with my Mod Podge? Thank you.
Great question! No, I'd probably skip it. If you have any water-soluble products on there they will all get ruined by the sealant layer. But you can use a finishing layer (that's 2 more videos to learn about that, here's the link about finishers: czcams.com/video/tdVEY8zismw/video.html
And here's the link to the Hamburger pdf! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-hamburger/
I hope all those resources helps!
Your hamburger method is amazing! I would love to be able to print off a copy, please. I have a question. Would the same method work on furniture? My mind is crazy with thoughts of doing this on furniture.
Yes!! You totally can! Here is the link to grab the pdf! awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-supplies/
Exactly which welbond universal glue did you buy off Amazon? The first 2 I saw had 2 different numbers and were priced differently, but said exactly the same thing in the description. l like the glossy finish too, so I want to make sure I purchase the correct welbond.
Hi! I'd like the hamburger PDF!! You are so inspiring and a great teacher .. thank you

Very helpful, thank you. I have a huge bottle of Liquitex acrylic gloss varnish to use up...so I was wondering if I could use the gloss medium varnish as an adhesive and a top coat for transferring sheets of tissue paper to wooden planks / blocks. Once it's used up - I think I will just buy Matte Mod Podge x
I'm not actually sure if varnish is meant for adhesive, I always just apply varnishes as the last coat. I'm sure all the info you need is right on the label though, especially if it's Liquitex, it should say right on the bottle for you!
@@KarenCampbellArtist Yes, that's what I'm thinking. I'd had a look before commenting, the label says 'use for glazing, as a fixative, collage adhesive, varnish, binder, or transfer medium'. I may have to just experiment. I do like Mod Podge though 😁 x
Hi Karen,
My question is regarding the Kamar spray varnish. I use it on alcohol inks as I thought that is the only varnish that won’t interact with them. I add alcohol to the inks though. (Ie: Rangers). I am using the back side of photo paper or yupo . I see you were using inks for your vases. Have you heard about using kamar for alcohol inks as the only varnish? .
Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge!
That’s a super good question but unfortunately I don’t know the answer to that! I don’t work a lot of alcohol inks (yet 😉) I wonder if you could Google it!
Hello Karen, wonderful series! Can you tell me how to get my little hands the your awesome 9 page booklet please? Thank you in advance!!

So glad I watched this I dislike Mod Podge but may give it another try, I also feel I need to start a fresh page from the bottom up and see how I feel when it is finished thanks Karen this was very interesting and educational. I have never seal my pages before, but I have used Daddy Van Furniture Wax on each page to stop the pages from sticking to each other up to this point in time I have yet to have any problems with it. I have not used it on my canvases, I have use that toxic spray have to agree with you that stuff is gross, hence thinking the Mod Podge may be the better choice.
Can you send me a link to the Furniture Wax you use?! I MUST TRY THIS!!! I went on Amazon but there were a lot of varieties to choose from so I didn't know which one to try! Thank you for the suggestion!!

put it on in a thin layer, few hours later polish it with soft cloth, been using since 2001 no issues, no offensive smells, this 1 tin is the only one I have had to buy so far still over 1/2 left. That is also a Canadian link, does not seem to want to give me the US one. Sorry
Interesting, so if I use a glue like sealant such as Mod Podge or Weldbond, then I need to spray with something else to make the sealant not be sticky? Also, wouldn't a sealant with gloss/sheen make it difficult to photograph the painting or drawing after the sealant has been applied? Can you use the Liquetex matte medium as the final layer for a painting that you don't want to have any gloss or shine?
Interestingly on the back of all acrylic mediums (like matte medium) it specifically says “not designed for final coat” so if you’re worried about photographing, just snap a pic before the varnish layer it grab a matte finisher instead - there are plenty to choose from on the market!
Love your video(s). Would you please send me the pdf of this? Also, is the information on all of these in your book? I never used modge podge. I have been trying gell mediums. I tried using

Thank you for this video! I think , perhaps it is better to use the mat medium in art journaling because of the stickyness of modge podge? What do you think?
I also use liquitex matte medium as glue and sealer, just because it is matte and does not stick as much as mod podge and yes you can still scribble on top. I did not like mod podge in my journal.
You can totally use Mod Podge in your journals (that's all I ever use!) BUT YOU HAVE to seal it afterwards - that's what next weeks video is about!! Stay tuned!
I love Matte Medium! It is probably the least sticky option for journals!! But, interestingly, you can totally use Mod Podge in your journals IF you want (that's all I ever use!) BUT YOU HAVE to seal it afterwards - that's what next weeks video is about!! Stay tuned!

For how much time am I supposed to let my painting dry before I apply a mod podge layer?
Hi I have recently done a mixed media piece with colour pencils ( Faber castell polychromos) and paint and wanted to know what varnish would be best to use?
Hey there! Check this out to see what supplies I recommend:
awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-supplies/
Hi I am not an artist at all and I am doing an art project with my kid's class. We will be using sharpie's on poster paper and we need to seal it all to be water resistant. What sealant would you suggest for poster paper and sharpie pens? Thank you!
I’d recommend any acrylic spray sealer. Just do lots of light coats in several different directions!
I would like to know if water colour painting can be sealed with modge podge and secondly can this painting be glass framed?
No. You definitely don’t want to put Mod Podge over watercolor, just acrylics! And I would out this in a frame without a glass. Great question!
Love your videos so helpful please send me the hamburger cheat sheet

(Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium) It's exactly what you're looking for! It's awesome stuff!
I like to use floetrol mixed with glue. I'm th hinking that mixing it with wellbond would work really well.
Love your videos. Please send me your Hamburger System sheet. Thank you for your great learning videos. I usually use mat medium but I have used Mod Podge before when making story blocks for my PreK students. Mod Podge did stand up to the everyday handing of little ones.

I want to thank you so much for making these confusing options accessible to a novice lilke me. I been learning as I go, first using Liquitex gloss medium and varnish to glue down my paper which worked well but from your video I could use just gloss medium without the varnish. I ran out of that and had some Liquitex matte medium, which didn't seem to give as strong a seal between canvas and paper. Also, when I tried pen and ink (pigma micron archival ink) on top of the matte medium it didn't stick. Is there a better medium to use if I want to use pen and ink on top of it? I also found in my stash some "Joe's primer really good binder medium," but I'm not sure how to use it. It says on the container, "water based acrylic emulsion used to seal most surfaces in preparation for painting. Use between paint surfaces as a barrier coat." Which is a puzzle. I didn't know I needed to seal a surface before painting or use between surfaces. So much to learn, so little time. I am now going to go look at your whole series.
Glad the series is helpful!! It sounds like the Joe's primer is equivalent to Gesso. You do need to Gesso some surfaces like if your painting in an altered book, you need to Gesso (or prep) those pages first. I made an entire art journal out of cereal boxes and all those cardboard sheets needed Gesso to begin as well. So that's the prep part! As far as writing over Matter Medium, reach for a water based paint pen (Uni Posca and Sharpie and Arteza make good ones) and yes, definitely watch the series, it will be helpful for a lot of product information! Http://bit.ly/hamburgerseries
@@KarenCampbellArtist Oh! I guess that's a duh. But it didn't occur to me because I have never used gesso or anything for preparing to paint. Thanks. And I will watch your video series. I also bought your book and can't wait to have it.
How would I seal the edges of paper collage that I have put on top of a watercolour painting? I know how to seal watercolour and I have often put final finish or even liquid glass over paper collage. Would I use one medium for the collage which is quite a big spread of semi Abstract Flowers and a watercolour finish for the table that the bars and flowers are on and the wall behind it and the windows behind it. I want to give the watercolour part a shine and I Do you have the varnish for the watercolour but I am wondering about a painting that also includes collage that is sticking up a bit here and there. Thanks.
I would just use a brush on type of sealer over the collage and spray the rest with the final cot you’re looking for.
I would love the hamburger pdf...thanks!

Do you apply anything in between your paper/painting and say the soft gel gloss? I’m concerned my paper is going to get a soaked through look & ruin the background of my painting.
On the welbond some say, "Universal adhesive," and the other says, "Multi purpose adhesive." Can you tell me which it is?
Mulit purpose! And links are always in the description box of every video if that helps! 💜Weldbond Adhesive

Have you ever tried Ranger's Multi Medium Matte? Don't think it comes in a size larger than 3.8 oz and is expensive for the amount you get; anywhere between $7 and $9 for only 3.8 oz. Also, I have problems with bad streaking when I coat something with a sealer. I don't see streaks in your art, though, after using the adhesives and sealers.
Hi there!! I have tried Rangers Mediums and like them very much!!! The streaking is all because of the products you are using UNDER the sealant layer. I talk specifically about this issue in the episode previous to this one (episode #5) You should watch that one especially, will answer all your questions about that! Hi Karen, English is my second language and i missed which one is the best professional substiture product for Modge Podge. Thanks in advance.
Any of the Liquitex or Golden products work really well. Those are the best artist brands to look for. Then choose if you want Matte or Gloss!
I was just going to look up what other sealers than mod podge (too wet) and poof this magically appeared! Yeah baby! Ty so much for all you do to help me be successful!
Ok so I watched but I’m confused as how to “freeze” my level without smudging it all up. I’m using art crayons so very water soluble but I made such a mess out of the perfection.. maybe I should activate it with the sealer and not prior to?

How many minutes should we let the matte mod podge dry??
I’m not sure. I’ve never waited because I’m too impatient! Lol!!! I shoot mine with a hair dryer until it’s dry! Takes just a couple of minutes, 5 tops!
Hi there...im super new at painting...i got inspired by my daughter starting and not finishing a Muriel in one of my bathrooms...but I didn't kn how to draw eyes...thats how I found you!! Quick Q?? How do I seal water paints??
Hi Tinito!!! Nothing like an unfinished giant wall painting to spur you into action, that's awesome! Glad I could help with the eye drawings! About the sealants, I'd love to help answer your question but I'm not sure what you mean by water paints. Do you mean watercolors?
@@KarenCampbellArtist thanks for getting back to me so swiftly...and yes I'm using Tombow water based pens....this is a very expensive hobby I just got myself into lol just spent $90 on 30 of these pens...now my daughter is trying to steal them lol I was trying to share my art and a media girl...inspired by you but no luck :( looking forward to yr response about sealing! Thanks again!!!
@@tinitobailey7952 you don't necessarily have to seal them with anything but if you want to I'd do a spray sealer because if you hit it with a brush and any liquid itll activate them and run!!!
Hi Karen, I'm new to mixed media and really enjoying your hamburger series. Would you please send me the link to download your PDF? Thanks very much.
