- What happens when a big ol' train runs rampant with no one to operate it? How do you stop it? And how the hell did this happen in the first place? Qxir answers all in this episode of 'Tales From the Bottle'!
"The CSX 8888 incident, also known as the Crazy Eights incident, was a runaway train event involving a CSX Transportation freight train in the U.S. state of Ohio on May 15, 2001. Locomotive #8888, an EMD SD40-2, was pulling a train of 47 cars including some loaded with hazardous chemicals, and ran uncontrolled for two hours at up to 82 kilometers per hour (51 mph). It was finally halted by a railroad crew in a second locomotive, which caught the runaway and coupled to the rear car.
As of 2018, #8888 is still in service, having been rebuilt and upgraded into a SD40-3 as part of a refurbishment program carried out by CSX, although its number is now #4389. It previously operated as Conrail #6410, being delivered to the railroad in September 1977."

30 years ago when I was in nursing school I took care of an elderly train engineer. I asked him what it was like to drive a train. He looked at me over his glasses and said, "young lady, engineers do not 'drive' a train. We 'run' a train". That stuck with me all these years later. Run, not drive.😉

Shooting the fuel tank may have worked. It's compartmentalized, but if they put enough holes in it that wouldn't have mattered.
There is one major factual error I want to point out here. One of my friends was a qualified CSX engineer in Baltimore, Maryland at the time of this incident. A little while after this incident, the Division Superintendent of Stanley Yard at the time, Cindy Sanborn (later a CSX vice-president), moved to Baltimore as their Division Superintendent for a while, and recounted the incident at a meeting of T&E crews that he was at. The engineer who caused the runaway, a CSX worker who had been with the company for 34 years (and also with a spotless record up to that point, I might add), *was NOT fired.* He DID get a sixty-day suspension, but *he was NOT dismissed.*
That is good news; As a manager of a large workforce, firing people for mistakes is a fool's move. There is usually something symtomatic of a deeper problem. It sounds like there was no brakeman on the train, so the engineer trying to do the right thing did the wrong thing.
Maybe it was reported that he had been fired. Either by press making up a story or by the company to save face and repair reputation. Or he just got it wrong who knows
@@joseph560 Between not revealing his identity and reporting that he was, probably company trying to save face.
@@rb239rtr Yeah, personally I learn the most from mistakes rather than rulebooks. For example last month I forgot to turn off the deepfrier after making myself lunch and it kept going for almost 3 hours at close to max power. Now I'm ultra paranoid and triplecheck every electrical appliance after using it, like making sure the door to the fridge is closed even though I'm 100% sure I closed it properly. And something so safe is straight up not something a normal person with a clear record would do
I thought that sounded a bit odd. From my experience, it's basically impossible for a union employee to get fired, especially for a single incident, no matter how severe.
At one time, hopping out of the locomotive was standard procedure on many railroads with rickety bridges. The train would stop at the bridge and the fireman would walk across. Then the engineer would send the train across very slowly while he jumped out. When the train got across the bridge, the fireman would jump back on it and stop the engine while the engineer walked across the bridge and caught up. I've seen this done on both the Marianna & Blountstown and the Louisville & Wadley. Both bridges eventually fell into the rivers, too. It was probably done on many, many small roads that I never visited.

trains are going way faster than you think
Shiey could've done this 110%!
This brings up the question: WHY did the operator apply the dynamic brake on a slow moving train? The dynamic brake is only effective when moving at speed.
Well, probably wanting to set every brake on for "maximum breaking effect", sadly creating the opposite by accident :D
Partially it's training, to 'hit the brakes' for train operator is to apply all of them and so he sort of just fell back on that muscle habit, which then failed.
That was precisely the point. The dynamic brakes would slow the train without actually bringing it to a halt.
Although, the biggest advantage of dynamic braking is that the energy is dissipated in a bank of cooled resistors, so the motors do not build up much heat from the braking action, so there is no limit to the amount of time that dynamic braking can be applied.
It's effective down to about 5mph on most locomotives made in the last few decades.
He was trying to use every brake at once, making sure the train would be going at minimum speed, if not completely stopped, by the time he fixed the signal.

Dynamic braking is used to intentionally exploit the "cogging" effect caused by phase coupling in an induction motor or by phase resistance in a permanent magnet motor. Normally, you synchronize the poles in the rotor such that they are being repelled from behind and attracted ahead. Shorting the leads of a permanent magnet DC motor or using a dynamic brake resistor on a controller/variable frequency drive will turn a motor into a brake that generates current that can be used for recharging batteries [like in my Nissan Leaf] or dissipated as heat. It starts forcing the motor's rotor to want to attract to a specific area on the stator which requires force to overcome creating field effect "friction." Source: I have been an industrial automation mechanic since 2012. I use dynamic braking on both induction and permanent magnet motors
The coolest example of a runaway train is the Lac Megantic incident, because not only was it a runaway train but it was also on fire and carrying shit loads of gas, exploded in a town when it derailed due to a sharp bend.

CORRECTION: applying air pressure to the breaks releases them. That's how their emergency function works. In passenger cars the emergency brake often just opens a valve to let the air out of the breaking system, making all connected brakes engage immediately.
Correct, I made a mistake and explained old style air brakes but modern trains don't have those any more!

Trainspotter/railfan here: At 1:58 train air brakes actually work the opposite way...sort of. Turn back here if you don't want to hear the nerd talk. Believe it or not, this is the shortened version.
There are 3 systems that make the air brakes work: an air brake line running the length of the train, a small air tank inside every train car and the locomotive(s), and the outside atmospheric pressure. There's a really complicated valve called a triple valve that controls these systems in relation to one another. For this slimmed down explanation you don't have to worry about how that valve works, only what it does.
The locomotive pressurizes the entire brake line, which then pressurizes the air tanks on each car. The pressure in the air tanks is actually what provides braking force on each car. *When the pressure in the brake line is greater than the pressure in the air tanks, the brakes are released. If the pressure in the brake line drops below the pressure of the air tanks, the brakes are applied.* This makes it somewhat fail-safe so that if there's a sudden loss of brake line pressure (railcars accidentally separate, train derails, etc.) the brakes will automatically be applied.
WARNING: While the brake line can quickly be recharged with more air, the air tanks are far slower to recharge. *The air tanks in each car will slowly leak and can "use up" their air more quickly than the locomotive can replenish them.* If the pressure in these air tanks is too low (maybe you applied the brakes before and used up most of the air), they might not have enough strength to apply the brakes. *If the air tank pressure is too low or is equal to the outside atmospheric pressure, the brakes will not be applied.* This played a role in multiple Cajon Pass derailments and the Lac Megantic disaster.
You deserve some more likes
Non-railfan question: can't each car have its own supply of air, from the outside, that fills the air tank, apart from the locomotive? Maybe mix them up, I have no clue.
so basically
Truck/Prime Mover/Road Train air brakes work in the same way. It's a fail-safe way to ensure the trailer's brakes engage if the trailer is disconnected from the truck for any reason.
@@pitaya4151: You would need a compressor on each car.
There is an air tank on each car. It has two compartments, normal and emergency. If the emergency-apply signal is sent from the car's brake valve, air from both sections enters the brake cylinder, making the brakes apply at maximum force.
In the province of Quebec, Canada, an unattended petrol train rolled down a hill in the middle of the night, derailed in the middle of a town, and blew up, destroying a large part of the town, killing a bunch of people instantly and wounding several others.
The Train was unattended because the driver went to sleep, and the brake failled.

The engineer did not fall asleep. That incident was a lot more complicated than that. He did not apply sufficient handbrakes to hold the train on a grade. The air brakes were set, but the locomotive that was running in order to keep the brakes charged caught fire. Someone driving along the road that parallels the tracks at that spot called the fire department, and they came and shut off the locomotive. No attempt at communication with the railroad was made. After they left, the train slowly lost air pressure until braking force was insufficient to hold it.
Apparently the management of the railroad involved, the Montreal Maine & Atlantic, had instructed engineers to leave unattended trains held by the airbrakes. I think there’s more to the story than that as well, but I don’t remember at the moment. The engineer did go to court and I believe was not found at fault due to the other factors involved.
King Peter afaik, that was mostly a mismanagement issue with bad locos, bad tracks, horrible securing guidelines and the whole book... did I miss something?

2:55 Dynamic brakes are used mainly for descending steep grades like in mountain passes. You explained it pretty well. It takes the motion from the wheels or motors or whatever and converts that into heat which goes through a special fan on the top (usually in the middle; you can identify it because it kind of angles out on the side of the locomotive at the top) to let that heat out. Again, very useful for descending a mountain pass, not much for actually stopping a train.

You mean to tell me they're not regenerative? Seems like a missed opportunity
@@matt45540 Regenerative braking is typically only used on electric locomotives since they rely heavily on electricity. My guess as to why EMD and GE went with rheostatic is probably because the energy to be gained from dynamic braking is negligible compared to the cost of developing a regenerative braking system and maintaining it.
It reminds me of a semitruck retarder, is this a similar thing?
@@ranpatoamami7048 Based on what little I've read, yeah I think so.
I love the commentary And your animated representation of yourself. All very Amusing. LoL.
"In the [US police academy] they must just give you a problem solving flow chart where there's only four actions, and three of them say open fire" - qxir
the most apt description i've ever heard of american police and it came from an irish youtuber
You've never dealt with cops in your life.
@@georgeptolemy7260 that’s literally everyone who thinks police just shoot people for no reason. Does it happen in very rare occasions? Yes. Do cops get killed far more then they kill anyone innocent? Also yes. Do the VAAAAST majority of interactions with police end with nothing, much less any shooting? Yep.
Police: “We need someone fast and strong enough to run and pull themselves onto the train” Also police: 5:50 *sends their next retiree to give it a shot*

Nobody in the US uses stone as a measure of weight. Thats a UK thing.
most Americans have never even hear of that lol
I've never seen any two stones that were the same weight. They're all different. They run all the way from pebbles to boulders.
@@fearlesscrusader lol
Wait 'Stone' is a measurement?
@@comradedyatlov4143 Yeah. It’s used commonly for body weight in the UK.
The new video was very nice .Hope to see more .Take care.

Your mouth doesn't have to move, especially if it takes more time
He wants it to move
it probably takes less time due to him being able to reuse animations, is a little strange but it works when talking about facts

2:55 remember those dynamos (I hope that's what they're called in english) from your bycicle when you were a child? Where you connect that thing to the wheel to power your bike's light?
Also remember how that dynamo felt like you were using the brakes while trying to ride the bike?
That, but on a train.
Those things made it really hard to drive unless you were going moderately slowly
Im going to hijack a train and drive it through every building in my city

Awesome video! That T-shirt looks cool
Similar thing happened in Western Australia last year. Bloke hopped off a mining train filled with iron ore and it ran away on him. It was derailed remotely from Perth over 1000km away before it got anywhere near civilisation and the end of the line. Made a big big mess.
Interesting story. Unfortunately all I saw was "traveled 1000 km" and "nowhere near civilization" and it made me laugh.
@@therealjammit Perth is 1000km from the derailment, It only traveled 91km . The maintenance crew applied the brake to the wrong train. And after a hour the emergency brakes on the soon to be runaway train which had stopped it in the first place released.
