You look at TLCs reality show lineup and you have a host of people who were committing crimes in plain sight and managed to normalize their behavior (i.e. josh Duggar). Reality television is more powerful than we give it credit for, and that’s rather sad when you consider that reality television isn’t even in touch with reality

I'm an author and work in PR. I have a friend who wants to self-publish a 200K word novel as her debut. She has social media but doesn't know how to utilize it to save her life. I hate having to tell people these things but you have to have a built-in following nowadays in order to get anything accomplished. Meryl can put out a message on her social media asking for donations to a specific charity. It will get a lot of likes from her followers. However, most will not actually donate even a dollar and won't share the link. Why? Her fan base while multi-generational is going to skew older and she isn't going to go about doing it in a flashy way that will get noticed. Kim on the other hand (who is not a favorite of mine please be in mind) will go about posting on TikTok and Instagram and that video will be shared at least a million times if not more to the point where the next day the post will be discussed on The View.
While we sadly do live in a "man's world" reality stars are mostly female. The men tend to be the boyfriend/ husband or gay best friend. If it were say Tom Holland vs Brad Pitt I think this would be a more close-knit debate as to who would actually have more power. However, then I would also start the debate as to why a man can so easily influence the room just because you find them attractive.
I think if it was just about followers than no maybe not but like Sara and Alyssa kept repeating it’s her ability to be marketable. She’s in fashion, in beauty, she’s mastered social media and marketing and they know whatever they put her name on or on it’ll make MONEY, this has never been about “raw acting talent”. To me it’s more of a criticism to say entertainment in general, music, acting, “fashion” has become more about CLOUT then the long term talent of it all.
Whoopi is right. Movies work differently. A film is worldwide, not just one part of the world. Nobody follows Kim Kardashian in China but they know who Meryl Streep is. In fact, there's a famous woman in China who does nothing but do her voices.

This is a dumb conversation because the entertainment industry has many sections. Kim has a big pull on reality tv, but is because she also produces the show and gives content. Charlize or any actress or actor would need to make huge investments to produce and perform in order to have a similar pull on her section of the industry.

All the actresses mentioned have production companies and/or producer/EP credits. They are all influential in their own right but not necessarily everything they do or want to do comes to fruition. I have no love for KK, however, if she decides to make a documentary about her work with the prison system with Van Jones and someone buys it and distributes it, she will be in the film business. It doesn't have to be a big theatrical release. She should know enough by now about how television works to be able to transfer some of that knowledge to the film industry. She also doesn't need to act. She's doing just fine being herself. To Sunny's point, she's not an artist. However, she is a very creative business woman, if nothing else.

This is an interesting conversation because it's really a debate about quality vs. quantity and that's why they are not seeing eye to eye even though they are both correct. Whoopi's perspective is that Kim doesn't have more pull in the industry because she's not regarded in the same way that Meryl is. That is correct. In terms of QUALITY, a Meryl movie will win all the awards, a Meryl movie will have the support of the critics, the academy, the rest of Hollywood and the industry as a whole. But the point of the other ladies is that a Kim movie would garner the popularity and the attention, even if it's not for good reasons. Which is more relevant? I personally side with Whoopi that Meryl has significantly more pull in terms of getting projects made in Hollywood, but Kim has more pull with the people, even if half of that pull will be people watching to see her fail.
